‘Ant-Man’ Movie Wouldn’t Just Be For ‘Avengers’ Experts, Director Says

Edgar Wright says he’s just completed a third draft of the script for the Marvel movie. By Aubrey Sitterson, with reporting by Josh Horowitz “Ant-Man” director Edgar Wright Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images With “Captain America: The First Avenger” grossing over $65 million on its opening weekend and fans already buzzing about next year’s “Avengers,” Marvel’s quickly expanding cinematic universe is as popular as ever. Now, from San Diego Comic-Con 2011 comes news that Marvel Studios might finally be moving ahead on a long-awaited release: Edgar Wright’s “Ant-Man.” The “Shaun of the Dead” and “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” director has been talking about taking on Marvel’s smallest superhero since at least 2007, promising a live-action film that would blend humor with action and would include two different Ant-Men: Henry Pym and Scott Lang. In the Marvel Comics source material, both characters make use of a special formula and suit that allows them to shrink, as well as a high-tech helmet that facilitates communication with ants and other insects. “Ant-Man” is said to feature flashbacks of the original hero, Pym, as well as scenes of his successor, Lang, in the present day. Now, after years of infrequent updates and stalled production, things are finally looking up for “Ant-Man.” “Since February, we’ve done two drafts of the script, and we just handed in a third draft on Monday,” Wright told MTV News. The director is co-writing the film with Joe Cornish, whose “Attack the Block” (a British alien-invasion movie starring frequent Wright collaborator Nick Frost and in theaters on July 29) was making waves of its own at Comic-Con. Apparently, some of the hold-up on “Ant-Man” was related to “Attack the Block,” as the duo did not complete a second draft until Cornish was finished with his directorial debut. “The way we wrote the script is for it to be a standalone genre film,” Wright said, perhaps indicating that “Ant-Man” would be less explicitly tied to the “Avengers” family of titles like “Captain America: The First Avenger,” “Thor” and “Iron Man.” Wright continued by explaining his desire to “create an ‘in’ for people so you don’t have to know 50 years of ‘Avengers’ history to enjoy the movie.” While most recent superhero adaptations have focused on Marvel and DC’s “big guns,” characters like Batman, Spider-Man, Superman and others, the protagonist of “Ant-Man” will be entirely new to all but the most fervent comic book fans. For Wright and Cornish, however, the freedom that comes with a lesser-known character is a large part of the upcoming project’s appeal. Wright was close-lipped on who he wanted to play the part of the movie’s eponymous hero (or heroes), but he did hint that he had someone in mind. Who would you like to see play Ant-Man? Justin Timberlake, Amanda Seyfried Explain What Happens ‘In Time’

What if ‘we had the potential to live forever and we looked 25 forever?’ Timberlake explained of the movie’s plot. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Justin Timberlake and Amanda Seyfried in “In Time” Photo: Twentieth Century Fox Justin Timberlake and Amanda Seyfried have done what every person in Hollywood strives to do: stop the aging process. In their new sci-fi flick “In Time,” directed by Andrew Niccol, the actors’ characters shake up their futuristic society, where the upper crust can buy or sell the most important thing the future has to offer: time itself. “We’re all mortals and the human race needs to be structured in a way where there’s no overpopulation,” Seyfried told MTV News on Saturday at San Diego Comic-Con . “And we all have body clocks and when we turn 25, you stop aging, basically, and it turns off [and] then you look 25 forever. You can be however old; you can live forever if you have a lot of time.” For Timberlake’s character, Will Salas, his time is nearly up when he’s gifted with more time by a wealthy older man. The elite, played by Cillian Murphy and Vincent Kartheiser, aren’t too keen on this, and eventually, Salas kidnaps Kartheiser’s daughter (Seyfried) and they go on the lam. Why is he so frantic to try to beat the clock? “If you run out of time, you have a heart attack and you’re dead immediately,” Seyfried explained. “It’s cut-and-dry, black and white. There’s the rich, there’s the poor. It reflects a lot on our actual, real society.” Niccol has put his signature seriously satiric stamp on the ideas of aging, something that really appealed to Timberlake. “That’s something that I love that Andrew does. You take a concept like the fountain of youth, something we all seem to be obsessed with, and what would happen if we actually got it? If we had the potential to live forever and we looked 25 forever?” he said. The film features a bevy of good-looking people including Alex Pettyfer, Matt Bomer and Olivia Wilde, to name a few, making filming quite an interesting process that came with this note: “Everyone may look the same age, but not everyone is playing the same age.” “All the actors in this film look the same age, but Matt Bomer, for instance, plays a character that’s 105,” Timberlake explained. “And so it really is a visual trip to watch.” Check out everything we’ve got on “In Time.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . ‘Cowboys & Aliens’ Will ‘Exceed’ Fans’ Expectations

Director Jon Favreau tells MTV News there’s much more to the movie than the ‘silly’ title may suggest. By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Jon Favreau Photo: Frazer Harrison/ Getty Images When news broke that “Iron Man” director Jon Favreau had wrangled two of the biggest names in the action-movie business — Harrison Ford and Daniel Craig — to star in his intriguing genre mash-up “Cowboys & Aliens,” that and a compelling premise proved to be enough to send scores of fanboys online seeking advanced tickets. But though there’s lots of early buzz from the marquee names associated with “Aliens” (mega-watt producers Steven Spielberg and Ron Howard are also onboard), Favreau recently admitted to MTV News that he felt pressure to deliver something extraordinary for fans. “Of course, with Ron Howard and Steven Spielberg [producing], I’m in real good hands,” Favreau said about overcoming the challenges of establishing just the right tone for the movie. “I learned a tremendous amount from them, and I think when you cast Harrison Ford and Daniel Craig — with ‘Bond’ and ‘Indy,’ those are two franchises that are fun but not silly,” he added about Craig’s 007 and Ford’s “Indiana Jones” series. “And I think that if people take a clue from who I cast in the film as to how it’s going to play, it’s a good indicator,” he explained. Favreau went on to say that there’s far more to the film than what the title suggests. “I think [moviegoers] hear the name ‘Cowboys and Aliens,’ it sounds kind of silly, but it also sounds compelling and interesting,” he said. “So if they give it a chance, they’ll see it’s a fun movie, it’s an exciting movie, and I think it’s going to exceed their expectations.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Cowboys & Aliens.” For breaking news and previews of the latest comic book movies — updated around the clock — visit SplashPage.MTV.com . Justin Timberlake and Amanda Seyfried

“I have a clause in my contract that says if you put someone as beautiful as Amanda in the movie, I have to fall in love with her,” Timberlake joked at a press conference for the film at San Diego Comic-Con. The costars bonded over a grueling shoot for the futuristic action film, which has Seyfried and Timberlake on the run after his character is accused of murder, and the duo eventually spent time together “shooting” off camera as well. ‘Man Of Steel’ Henry Cavill Reacts To Production Delay

At Comic-Con 2011, actor also tells MTV News about meeting Russell Crowe, his co-star in Zack Snyder’s Superman reboot. By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Henry Cavill Photo: MTV News SAN DIEGO — Plenty of fans were surprised when news broke that the release date for Zack Snyder’s Superman reboot, “Man of Steel,” was pushed back six months to June 14, 2013 — but none more so than the would-be superhero himself, Henry Cavill. “They broke it to me gently,” he told MTV News on Saturday (July 23) at San Diego Comic-Con. “I was just told the other day. It’s OK, it’s nothing to do with me. That’s stuff which I have no control over. I just focus on the character and do my job.” Speaking of stepping into the shoes of the iconic superhero — or tights, rather — Cavill said he’s “prepared enough” but anxious to start production. “I’m really raring to go,” he said. “It’s exciting, humbling, and about time to get started.” Of course, Cavill couldn’t divulge many details about the upcoming shoot or what his fellow cast members may or may not be doing in the film, but he did provide a delightful anecdote about his first meeting with co-star Russell Crowe (who is playing his father, Jor-El). Cavill recounted one of the very early days in his acting career when he worked as an extra in a film Crowe was shooting at his school. “I walked up to Russell, shook his hand, and said ‘I’m thinking of becoming an actor. What advice do you have?’ He said to me … No, I won’t say what he said,” Cavil said with a smile, indicating that his response might have included a swear word or two. “Two days later, I received an Aussie rugby jersey, a [CD] and a signed picture from ‘Gladiator’ [with a note that read] ‘Dear Henry, A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step, Russell.’ Cut to 11 years later, at what is the high point of my career, and here we are.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Man of Steel.” For breaking news and previews of the latest comic book movies — updated around the clock — visit SplashPage.MTV.com . Steven Spielberg, Peter Jackson Talk ‘Adventures Of Tintin’

At Comic-Con, director Spielberg and producer Jackson tell MTV News about motion-capture technique. By Terri Schwartz, with reporting by Eric Ditzian Peter Jackson and Steven Spielberg at Comic-Con 2011 Photo: Michael Buckner/ Getty Images SAN DIEGO — “The Adventures of Tintin” took San Diego Comic-Con by storm during Friday’s Hall H panel, gifting fans with new footage of the upcoming motion-capture flick and surprise appearances by producer Peter Jackson and star Andy Serkis. The debuted footage was received very favorably, several news outlets reported. Jackson and director Steven Spielberg caught up with MTV News to chat about how motion capture has evolved over the years. Spielberg cited the motion capture in “The Polar Express” as what propelled the animation technique into popularity, which then culminated in its best form when James Cameron and Weta Digital applied it to “Avatar.” Was there any one scene in particular Spielberg found the most difficult to create? “I don’t think it’s any one scene that is tough to crack,” he said. “It’s the medium that has been evolving that took years of development and experimentation and trial and error.” The central focus of the story is obviously the movie’s namesake, Tintin, but there are plenty of other colorful characters fans should look forward to as well. Spielberg said he hopes Tintin is the biggest breakout character to come out of the flick, but Jackson said the rest of the ensemble will have a chance to shine as well. “[Comic creator] Herg

Five Funny Lies Women Tell Men

“Who the biggest liars, men or women? Women are the biggest liars! Look at you, all of you. All of you are liars! Masters of the lie- the visual lie. Look at you. You got on heels- you ain’t that tall. You got on makeup, your face don’t look like that. You got a weave- your hair ain’t that long. You got a Wonderbra on- your titties ain’t that big. Everything about YOU is a lie, and you expect me to tell the truth?!? F*ck you!” – Chris Rock Ah ladies! We always get on the fellas for lying. But let’s be real- we lie too. And though many of us ladies do strive to be honest and forthright, sometimes we get put in positions where we’d rather not tell the truth- at least not at that exact moment in time. So what do we do? Sometime we (gasp) lie. But in our defense, they’re mostly little white lies, half-truths. So nobody’s really getting hurt. And though I have to agree with Chris Rock that we women are masters of the visual lie- I actually like to call it the “beautiful illusion.” Personally I still think men are the biggest liars. But maybe that’s just because I’m a woman and choose to stay loyal to the sisterhood. Here are 5 funny and sometimes obvious lies we women tell men.
