Forgive Me Father, But You F-ed Me Up − A Last Look Back At The Toronto International Film Festival

I keep coming back to The Place Beyond the Pines , but it was the movie that defined the Toronto International Film Festival  for me. More than once, I heard the director Derek Cianfrance describe his ambitious and moving film as a movie about “legacy” and how “sometimes you’re born into a world with all of these repercussions that people have made before you” and “have to fight and claw to get out of that.”  Judging from the features and documentaries I saw during my short stay in Toronto, these ideas of legacy and the sins of our fathers — whether they’re our literal or institutional fathers — are weighing heavily on America’s collective psyche. Perhaps this theme resonated with me because I am a father — the sins come with the territory — but after a decade of terrorism, war and economic turmoil, I think that, on a larger psychological scale, even a nice chunk of the 1 percent are freaked about how America’s recent past will affect its future, and that insecurity has seeped into a lot of the art that will be seeing over the next few months. The Place Beyond The Pines , which Focus Features will release in 2013, is essentially about how a fateful encounter between two fathers — one a stunt motorcyclist ( Ryan Gosling ) who has turned to crime to support his son; the other, a cop ( Bradley Cooper) , who has his own daddy issues, carries over into the next generation. I’m oversimplifying the plot, a good portion of which needs to stay under wraps for optimum dramatic impact, but, in the last third of the movie, Cianfrance creates a remarkable amount of tension around the question of whether the sons of Gosling and Cooper’s characters will be damned by the actions of their fathers. A similar theme is at play in Daniel Algrant’s Greetings From Tim Buckley , a movie that features a breakthrough performance from Penn Badgley as Tim’s son, Jeff Buckley, who, like his father, was an extremely talented singer/songwriter. (Based on Badgley’s performance, he has a bright future in film.)  Buckley pere and fils both died young: Tim succumbed to a drug overdose at the age of 28 when his son was just an infant. Jeff drowned in the Wolf River in Memphis, TN when he was 30. Greetings doesn’t deal with their deaths, though. It grapples with the much thornier aspect of Jeff’s life, specifically, his struggle to shake off the weighty ghost of his father — at the post-screening Q&A I attended, Algrant said Greetings producer Fred Zollo described the story as ” Hamlet ” — who he barely knew but who serves as a constant reminder of all he has not accomplished. Tim Buckley had released nine studio albums, achieved critical acclaim and credibility as a political activist by the time he died. Jeff Buckley was just beginning to record his second album when he died. And yet, anyone who has heard his recordings of “Forget Her,” “Lover, You Should Have Come Over” or his ethereal version of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah,” knows that Jeff found himself. But as Algrant and, especially Badgley, reveal, the story is all in the telling.

America’s Got Talent: Who Won?

Nick Cannon was right. That sure was an “insane” finale of America’s Got Talent . The summer competition crowned its Season 7 winner last night, but not before a two-hour finale crammed in clips of some awful talent; a visit from Joan Rivers; a goodbye to Sharon Osbourne ; and performances by Justin Bieber and Green Day. And after all that pageantry, the six contestants were whittled down to Tom Cotter and Olate Dogs, with the winner announced as… … OLATE DOGS! Confetti poured down, all the acts came on stage, hugs were exchanged and another season went in the books. Did you agree with America’s choice?

Ho Sit Down: Money Mitt Gets Heckled During Speech!! [Video]

Mitt Robney keeps pissin’ people off! One day after criticizing President Obama in the hours following the announcement of the deaths of four U.S. diplomats, Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney softened his tone on Thursday, and focused on grieving. “I know that we’ve had heavy hearts across America today, and I want you to know things are going to get a lot better. But I also recognize that we’re in mourning. We’ve lost four of our diplomats across the world. We’re thinking about their families and those that they’ve left behind,” Romney said, at the beginning of a rally with roughly 2,700 supporters here in Northern Virginia. Then, as Romney continued to lament the loss of U.S. Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens, and the three others killed in Benghazi, a heckler distracted him. “What a tragedy, to lose such a wonderful, wonderful, uh,” Romney said, as the heckler began to yell, “Why are you politicizing Libya?” Romney continued, “wonderful people that have been so wonderful.” The crowd chanted the heckler down, and then Romney made a decision that if he held a moment of silence, it would be disrupted by the protester. “And so I would offer a moment of silence but one gentleman doesn’t want to be silent so we’re going to keep on going,” Romney said. Romney’s comments came one day after he leveled a blistering critique at the president just hours after Stevens’ death was announced. It was an apparent acknowledgment by Romney that he may have struck an off-note on Wednesday, when he talking briefly about mourning the Americans’ deaths but spent most of his time blasting Obama’s approach to foreign relations. The vid speaks for itself…that he could turn such a somber moment into an Obama bashing free-for-all just proves he’s got nothing to stand on! SMH Source Images via WENN/Youtube

What Were You Thinking? Kyle Casey Leaves Harvard After Cheating Scandal

The choices we make… dictate the lives we lead. SMH It took less than two weeks for Harvard Basketball co-captain Kyle Casey to withdraw from school for the entire academic year after the shake down in a widespread academic cheating scandal. With Harvard’s fall enrollment deadline looming Tuesday, Casey withdrew from school and co-captain Brandyn Curry was expected to do the same, in an attempt to preserve their final year of eligibility. On Aug. 30, Harvard College announced in a letter that its administrative board was investigating allegations that approximately 125 undergraduates “may have committed acts of academic dishonesty, ranging from inappropriate collaboration to outright plagiarism, on a take-home final exam.” The exam was for Government 1310: Introduction to Congress, a spring 2012 class with an enrollment of 279. Sources said that Casey, Curry and one additional men’s basketball player are among a group of athletes and non-athletes whose cases are pending review. They are facing charges of academic dishonesty that could carry a one-year suspension from school. Amaker, who came to Harvard in 2007 after being dismissed from Michigan, has coached the Crimson to 20-win seasons in each of the past three years, including a 26-5 record in 2011-12. They were the early favorite to repeat as Ivy League champions next season, given that Casey, who also considered attending Stanford and Vanderbilt out of high school in Medway, Mass., was a potential contender for Ivy League player of the year and Curry was expected to be among the conference’s best point guards. For at least one season, Harvard will have to make do without them. Lesson learned?? Or do you think this was a harsh punishment? Source Images via Twitter

It’s A Vicious Cycle–America’s Next Top Model To Meth Addict!!

You all remember Jael from ANTM… the rough, spunky contestant on Cycle 8 who wanted to be the best! That awkward episode where Jay Emmanuel gave her attitude because she wasn’t “giving enough” during one of their pretend you’re dead photo shoots; faking like he didn’t know her friend had overdosed a few days before. Unfortunately for Jael, she’s been hittin’ that Meth for the last SIX years and she’s a full blown addict who’s ruined her face and body, which is covered in sores, and has rotted teeth in exchange for a beautiful smile. Peep the vid as her family appears on an upcoming episode of Dr. Phil holding an intervention in order to save her life. A former America’s Next Top Model contestant’s battle with crystal meth addiction is the subject of an explosive new episode of Dr. Phil…after becoming hooked on methamphetamine, Strauss, 28, soon became a helpless addict and in an episode airing on September 13, her family turns to Dr. Phil McGraw for an intervention. Ravaged in appearance and living on the streets, Strauss is hunted down by her brother, Brandon and mother, Debbie, who ask her to travel to Los Angeles to see Dr. Phil. Reluctantly she agrees. But after she finds herself on the stage, she runs out of the studio and into the Paramount parking lot. Realizing the extent of her issues, Dr. Phil follows her, noting: “This is the first time in 10 years I’ve come out here, to talk to you.” It isn’t the first time Strauss, who claims to be well-rounded, has struggled with her emotions on TV. Her family conceded that her friend’s overdose “really shook her,” but it wasn’t enough to wean Strauss off drugs herself. This is a sad story and we hope she can kick the habit! Wah-Wah-Weekend Receipts: Not Screened Cold Light Of Day Rings In Lousy Box Office Weekend

Woe is the poor, lonely Henry Cavill actioner Cold Light of Day , which opened in wide release and climbed its way to the bottom (well okay, #13) with a paltry $1.8 million take. As in, TOTAL. Not screening a film and giving it virtually no promotion will do that, even with the future Superman holding a gun and Bruce Willis and Sigourney Weaver posing like the T-800 on the poster. But it was also a terrible movie-going weekend all-around, with the bleakest numbers in recent memory spreading across all comers. Hit it for the Debbie Downer of Weekend Receipts and let’s all look to Finding Nemo and Milla Jovovich’s leather pants next week for salvation. 1. The Possession Gross: $9,500,000 (Cume: $33,349,000)
Screens: 2,834 (PSA: $3,352)
Weeks: 2 (Change: -46.4%) Lionsgate’s supernatural horror-thriller held the top spot with just $9.5 million in receipts – yikes. Expect the Jeffrey Dean Morgan – dybbuk picture to drop next week when real competition from genre sequel Resident Evil: Retribution muscles its way into the box office. 2. Lawless Gross: $6,002,000 (Cume: $23,520,000) Screens: 3,138 (PSA: $1,913) Week 2 How refreshing to see a movie for grownups zooming up the charts! Even with a less-than-stellar $1,913 per-screen take, the violent, sweater-filled Shia LaBeouf-Tom Hardy period drama is still director John Hillcoat’s biggest opener to date, behind 2009’s The Road ($8.1M gross) and 2006’s The Proposition ($1.9M gross). 3. The Words Gross: $5,000,000 Screens: 2,801 (PSA: $1,785) Week: 1 Despite a concerted marketing push, CBS Films notched a dud with this Bradley Cooper drama about a writer and a book and his lady and something something something … which goes to show that if your target audience doesn’t quite get what your film is about, they won’t show up in droves to see it. The Words was acquired at Sundance for $2 million, so at least it’s not a huge wash, but don’t expect this one to break out in the coming weeks. 4. The Expendables 2 Gross: $4,750,000 (Cume: $75,417,000) Screens: 3,260 (PSA: $1,457) Week: 4 (Change: -47.4%) Sly Stallone & Co’s old dudes kicking ass sequel made a splash this summer but suffered a -47.4% drop off. Could it be the testosterone-seeking set stayed home to watch beefy men hit each other on the football field instead? 5. The Bourne Legacy Gross: $4,000,000 (Cume: $103,700,000) Screens: 2,766 (PSA: $1,446) Weeks: 5 (Change: -44.7%) At least the terrible weekend put Bourne Legacy into the $100 mil club. (Worldwide take to date: $165 million.) Just a few weekends more and Universal should make back its costs + P&A! 6. ParaNorman Gross: $3,830,000 (Cume: $45,098,000) Screens: 2,856 (PSA: $1,341) Weeks: 4 (Change: -41.7%) The technically amazing (but pretty damn dark ) stop motion/CG kids tale earned some of the highest critical praise of late, matching The Dark Knight Rises with an 87 percent Tomatometer ranking. Fingers crossed more kids and parents seek it out next week as the much fluffier Finding Nemo 3-D re-release barrels into theaters. 7. The Odd Life of Timothy Green Gross: $3,650,000 (Cume: $43,007,000) Screens: 2,717 (PSA: $1,343) Weeks: 4 (Change: -41.8%) The tree-child-made-of-wishes picture suffered its biggest decline in week 4, on par with most of the weekend’s contenders. Was this odd fantasy not what children everywhere were jonesing for as they began their intrepid march back into the classroom? Did parents the nation ’round not clamor to see a weird-ass movie about infertility and magical babies as they re-acclimated to the grinding realities of sending their young back to school?? 8. The Campaign Gross: $3,530,000 (Cume $79,473,000) Screens: 2,542 (PSA: $1,389) Weeks: 5 (Change: -38.2%) Well, we had more interesting ( and comical ) political entertainment to watch on TV last week. 9. The Dark Knight Rises Gross: $3,285,000 (Cume: $437,849,000) Screens: 1,987 (PSA: $1,653) Weeks: 8 (Change: -46.3%) I love it when huge blockbusters with record-breaking box office tallies still sneak their way into the Top 10 with tiny returns. Are these repeat viewings or first-time TDKR -watchers? Who waits two months to see The Dark Knight Rises ?? So many questions. 10. 2016 Obama’s America Gross: $3,281,000 (Cume: $26,088,000) Screens: 2,017 (PSA: $1,627) Weeks: 9 (Change: -41.5%) Despite a significant -41.5% drop-off from last week (when it ranked #9), the polarizing partisan doc has reached its widest release, hitting 2,017 theaters nationwide. It’s now the longest in-theater release in the Top 10, with a $26 million cume to date. — 13. The Cold Light of Day Gross: $1,800,000 Screens: 1,511 (PSA: $1,191) Weeks: 1 WOW. Despite starring Bruce Willis, Henry Cavill, and Sigourney Weaver, poor little Cold Light of Day – the first wide release of its kind to not be screened for critics in a while – opened in wide release outside of the Top 10. The cold shoulder from Summit Entertainment helped the thriller on its way to an early theatrical grave. [Source: Box Office Mojo ]
