By Jocelyn Vena John Mayer in his music video for “Shadow Days” Photo: Columbia In his new “Shadow Days” music video , John Mayer is leaving behind the bright lights and hustle and bustle of the big city for something simpler. The video is a road trip, with Mayer dressed up as a cowboy, making his way across the heartland of our great country to just chill out and let it all go. It’s a completely uncomplicated premise. Mayer treks through snowy landscapes, small-town motels, deserts and mountains to just find himself and, as the song addresses, let his past go. He leads an unfussy life in the clip, as he travels from place to place, buying guitars, eating greasy food in diners and rocking a cowboy hat with the sort of sincerity only a few guitar-slinging pop stars can pull off. Not much happens in the clip, but that’s kind of the idea. The story is nothing more than Mayer driving across America. But the sun-drenched message, perhaps, is that Mayer is looking to something simpler these days, given how his personal life has had some turmoil. For a man who has a reputation for breaking starlets’ hearts and has battled vocal-cord issues , Mayer seems to want to change his story and redirect the conversation back to his music. While the video opened with shots of a cityscape in all its artificial glow, it closes on a denim-clad Mayer, walking alone near the side of an abandoned road with just the sun to keep him company. “Shadow Days” is the lead single from his next album, Born and Raised, due May 22. He had planned to tour in support of the album this spring but had to cancel after he learned he was still battling a granuloma growth on his vocal cords. *wipes tears* Newlywed Woman Loses Husband To Cancer After Only 6 Weeks A woman married the man of her dreams and her best friend since college, only to have him die just six weeks after she walked down the aisle. Bethany Schmidt met future husband, Ryan Smith, when they were both students at the University of Oregon in 2005, and after graduation they moved into a small one-bedroom apartment in Eugene, where she got a job in graphic design and he worked in finance. The smitten girlfriend said Ryan “knew he had it in the bag” from the beginning, and the young couple decided they would get married two years down the road. Sadly time was not on their side, and “in January 2011, Ryan was diagnosed with a very rare form of cancer & began treatment immediately. We stuck together,” Bethany, now 25, wrote on the website that she made as a tribute to her lost love BethanyRyanSmith.com. Smith was suffering from a rare and aggressive form of testicular cancer that was unaffected by chemotherapy and had developed a large tumor in his colon. Despite the devastating blow, the couple was determined not to put their dreams on hold and on July 1 while on a weekend trip to visit Bethany’s parents in Bend, Ryan dropped down to one knee and asked her to marry him. “I dropped to both knees and said yes,” she said. That’s when isht got real, REAL fast… In November, Ryan’s doctors decided enough was enough. “After three different intensive chemotherapies, a major surgery at USC in LA, lots of doctors, and too many nights in the hospital, Ryan’s treatment was discontinued. We were told there wasn’t anything else we could do and his prognosis was about six months,” she said. The only thing left to do was to tie the knot and make their relationship official, so they set their wedding date for two months away, but when the groom’s health took a turn for the worse and his organs began shutting down, they were forced to speed up the process. “With three days notice and the incredible help of friends, family, and some dear angels we were able to do the thing we wanted to most: We got married. We held a small ceremony on December 11th in Bend, Oregon,” wrote Bethany. Tragically, the end was not far away, and on January 18 Ryan, 24, was admitted to the hospital with symptoms they could not control at home. “I stayed next him in his hospital bed until he passed in the early hours of January 24th,” revealed his grieving widow, who calls her late husband: “the most wonderful person I have ever known.” Condolences to Bethany and the family and friends of Ryan Smith. Chicago Speeder Arrested For Driving 111 MPH To Have Sex A Chicago-area man who allegedly was clocked driving 111 mph through a 45 mph forest preserve told a patrol officer he was in a hurry to “try to go have sex with a girl he liked.” Zachary P. Ramirez, 21, of Naperville, which lies about 20 miles west of downtown Chicago, was caught speeding through Springbrook Prairie Forest Preserve last Saturday, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. Police Sgt. Gregg Bell told the paper an officer saw Ramirez’s 1994 Honda Prelude run a red light, then run a stop sign. Another officer pulled him over and asked him why he was traveling so fast. For sex, he said. The officer’s radar unit initially clocked the car traveling at 104 mph “and finally locked at 111 (mph),” Bell told the Sun-Times. Police also allegedly found 0.2 grams of marijuana in the car. Ramirez faces charges of speeding 40 mph or more over the limit, according to the paper. He also was charged with drug possession, disobeying a traffic light and disobeying a stop sign. Ramirez is free on $200 bond, the Sun-Times reported. His arraignment date is pending. A website called Picket Report marketed as a new online research tool that helps home buyers find their “perfect neighborhood” has been forced to remove a controversial section which apparently racially stereotyped various neighborhoods: Picket Report offered the section as a way for househunters to discover more about areas they might like to live in, but was quickly accused of insensitivity owing to the race- and class-related descriptions it provided. The section was later removed from the Detroit-based start-up after an embarrassing article published on real estate website Curbed Detroit. When the zip code for Detroit’s poorest neighbourhood – 48208 – was plugged into the website, several shocking descriptions popped up. Yesterday it was confirmed that neither Jim Jones or Chrissy Lampkin will be back for season 3 of “Love & Hip Hop.” Now Emily B. is following their lead: The stylist revealed that she would not return for another round. “There will be a 3rd Season of #loveandhiphop NY but I will not be a cast member. Arrest Made In Phylicia Barnes Murder Case And Sister’s Ex-Boyfriend In Custody As Suspect Someone’s locked up now for the murder of Phylicia Barnes: For nearly a decade, Michael Maurice Johnson dated the half-sister of Phylicia Barnes. He went along on family trips, and played basketball with their brother. He was like family, and considered Phylicia a “little sister,” relatives say. He was also the last person to see the girl alive in late December 2010. Now Baltimore prosecutors have charged him in the murder of the promising North Carolina teenager, whose nude body was found floating in the Susquehanna River one year ago this month. In announcing the charge Thursday, authorities said very little about the case against Johnson, 28. He faces one count of first-degree murder, and officials declined to say how or where Phylicia was killed. Johnson was arrested late Wednesday outside his apartment after police said he tried to run from officers. “This was an enormous collaborative effort by all agencies involved,” Baltimore State’s Attorney Gregg Bernstein said at a news conference, where he was flanked by city police and state troopers. “We hope it provides some measure of closure for the family.” Johnson, who does not appear to have a criminal record, had been repeatedly questioned since Phylicia’s disappearance, but defense attorney Russell Neverdon said Johnson continues to deny any involvement. Neverdon briefly met with his client Thursday at the Baltimore City Detention Center. “He told me, ‘I’m innocent. I didn’t do anything wrong. I will fight this to the very end,’” Neverdon said. After 16 months of investigating, prosecutors obtained the grand jury indictment two days after the former lead detective in Baltimore, Daniel Nicholson IV, was suspended amid allegations that he conducted a rogue investigation to search for his own daughter. The teen went missing from Baltimore County last Friday and was later found unharmed. Neverdon, during a news conference in his lower Charles Village office, said he believes that police expedited their case because of the troubles Nicholson faces, and that the single-count indictment shows their case remains circumstantial. “Police had Mr. Johnson in their sights from the first day,” Neverdon said, noting that his client met four times with homicide detectives and submitted a DNA sample for testing. Johnson’s relatives were questioned and his car was searched, the lawyer said. “The police made good on their promise,” Neverdon said. “They told him during one meeting that it was only a matter of time before they got him.” Bernstein said Thursday that the allegations against Nicholson — whose squad attended the news conference without him — are a “completely separate matter” and will “absolutely not” impact the case against Johnson. “If I thought for a moment that the alleged activity impacted the case, we wouldn’t have brought it,” Bernstein said. Phylicia, an honor student who was set to graduate early from high school, vanished on Dec. 28, 2010, from the Reisterstown Road apartment of her half-sister Deena, while visiting from Monroe, N.C. Deena has said she met Phylicia about 10 years ago at a family reunion in Baltimore, and they reconnected about three years ago on Facebook. Phylicia visited Baltimore several times, and hoped to attend Towson University. Police have described the apartment as a “college house” that wasn’t always secured and said that up to a dozen people were in and out of it over the holidays. Summit High School sophomore Jeff Shott has been awarded a $1,000 scholarship for dressing like Jesus Christ on Fictional Character Day: The Spring Hill student was not disciplined for his action back in January, but Summit High Principal Charles Farmer did advise him that if the costume caused distraction during the day that he would have to remove it, school officials say. Shott voluntarily removed his robes and sash, a costume that included a hammer and nail. “Both principals said they were worried my costume would spark religious debates in every class and take up large amounts of time. I was sternly warned that if even one teacher reported the slightest disruption, I would have to take off my costume. Then and there, I decided to take it off,” Shott wrote in a letter to the Freedom From Religion Foundation, a national organization devoted to promoting the separation of state and church.
