Thomas Kinkade, Popular Artist, Passes Away at 54

Thomas Kinkade, the acclaimed “Painter of Light” and one of the most popular artists in America, died suddenly Friday in his California home. He was 54. His family said Kinkade’s death appeared to be from natural causes. “Thom provided such a wonderful life for his family,” his wife, Nanette, said in a statement earlier today. “We are shocked and saddened by his death.” His paintings are hanging in an estimated one of every 20 homes in the United States, with fans warming to the familiar feeling of his mass-produced works of art. Art critics often dismissed his work as tacky, but his prints of idyllic cottages and bucolic garden gates helped establish a brand are uncommonly in the art world. “I’m a warrior for light,” Kinkade, famed for his style of painted highlights, told the San Jose Mercury-News in 2002, alluding not just to his skill, but his approach. To Kinkade, light was used to symbolize the divine. “With whatever talent and resources I have, I try to bring light to penetrate the darkness many people feel.” He clearly reached a lot of people. His Media Arts Group company is said to have taken in up to $32 million per quarter from 4,500 dealers across the country.

Desperate Housewives star Vanessa Williams is bravely and surprisingly opening up about sexual abuse she endured as a 10-year-old at the hands of a teenage girl. In a revealing interview in the new issue of People , Williams says the incident occurred when she was staying with family friends and their 18-year-old daughter. The 18-year-old entered her room and “pulled down the bloomers of my cotton baby doll pajamas,” said Vanessa. “I lay there paralyzed. What was I going to do?” Williams remained close-lipped about the sexual abuse for many years, but is now sharing her secret in her upcoming memoir, fittingly titled You Have No Idea . Despite the childhood trauma, the former Miss America said it didn’t emotionally scar her for life – however, there were long-lasting, indirect consequences. “It didn’t paralyze me, and I don’t dwell,” she explained, although it did cause her to act more rebellious and “pull away” from her parents as a youngster. Nadya Suleman on Welfare: So Ashamed!

Nadya “Octomom” Suleman said she’s “ashamed” of going on welfare to take care of her 14 children, but she will still never stoop so low as to do porn. “I still am working as hard as I possibly can to support them,’’ Suleman told Today’s Matt Lauer, adding that she made the welfare decision “reluctantly.” Suleman said she was not just humbled, but afraid to take public assistance, as she’s received death threats for receiving the aid (up to $2,000 a month). [It’s] unbelievably fascinating in regard to humanity how many people are foaming at the mouth for my children to be taken away from me.” “The saddest part is 15 years from now, when they’re 18 and legal and in college, people will still be foaming at their mouth for them to be taken.’’ Hopefully in 15 years, we’ll have moved on … or she’ll have at least gotten off welfare and given people no reason to care. American Idol Results: Who Got the Boot?

American Idol traveled back to the 1980s last night. But the remaining eight finalists were forced to look ahead on Thursdays results show, as America voted and revealed an unfortunate future for one contestant: He or she is going home. Who received the bad news? It appeared briefly that fan favorite Phillip Phillips might be in danger, but it came down to Elise Testone and DeAndre Brackensick in the bottom two. The contestant getting the boot this week was … DeAndre. The audience, predictably, began chanting “Save! Save! Save! Save!” Unfortunately for the falsetto-singing teen, only one of the judges would’ve done so. Jennifer broke the bad news: “This boy right here, we’ve been watching him for two years. You’re an amazing performer. I stand by that,” she told him. However, “I only get one vote. I’m sorry … we’re not saving you tonight.” Ryan puts her on the spot, asking if J. Lo voted to save him while Steven Tyler and Randy Jackson didn’t. “Yes,” she replies, “that’s what I’m saying.” Think she was serious? It’s a good cover story if not. Every week could be a 2-1 decision against the eliminated singer. Anyway, best of luck, DeAndre. What do you think? Did America (and the judges) get it right?

‘Captain America 2’: What We Know So Far

Disney has announced a release date in April 2014, but what else can we predict about Cap’s return to the big screen? By Kevin Sullivan Chris Evans in “Captain America: The First Avenger” Photo: Paramount Pictures Captain America might be only getting ready to strap on his shield for “The Avengers,” but Disney has already announced definite plans for his next solo adventure. In a press release on Thursday (April 5), Disney set the debut of “Captain America 2” for April 4, 2014 and gave a brief explanation of where the story will take us. “The second installment will pick-up where the highly anticipated ‘Marvel’s The Avengers’ (May 4, 2012) leaves off, as Steve Rogers continues his affiliation with Nick Fury and S.H.I.E.L.D and struggles to embrace his role in the modern world.” The news comes hot off talk of a short list for director candidates, so we’ve broken down everything we know so far about the “Captain America” sequel. The Setting The plot information confirms two items for the Marvel Universe. First, the film will definitely have a contemporary setting, an issue that there’s been some back-and-forth on since the release of “Captain America: The First Avenger” last year. Splash Page spoke with Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, the writers of “The First Avenger,” a year ago about their plans for the sequel, which they are onboard to pen as well. The writing team saw the flash forward to the modern era at the end of the original film as an opportunity to explore two different settings, leaving 40s Cap a possibility through flashback. “It’s sort of a weirdly huge opportunity for storytelling in that you know modern Cap through ‘The Avengers’ at that point, and just by the nature of what we were talking about before, there’s going to be a lot of his World War II history we haven’t shown,” Markus said. “We’re going to have two entire timelines to play with.” Nick Fury We’re also sure that Samuel L. Jackson ‘s Nick Fury will almost definitely survive “The Avengers.” Director Joss Whedon is notorious for killing characters, so with Fury removed from the list, the candidates for a possible early demise is whittled down. The Director We’re still a long way from seeing a second “Captain America” movie, the 2014 release date aside. With director Joe Johnston not returning, the production is currently seeking a director to lead Cap back into the fray, and a report last week from Vulture singled out Anthony and Joseph Russo from “Community” fame as candidates on Marvel’s short list of contenders. The Release Date While the specific date of April 4 is news, the year 2014 had been batted around for a while. By Adam Graham DeAndre Brackensick on “American Idol” Photo: Fox DeAndre Brackensick sang “I Like It” on Wednesday’s ’80s-themed episode of “American Idol,” but America didn’t like it and sent the springy-haired singer packing on Thursday’s (April 5) elimination episode. The 17-year-old from San Jose, California, came the closest so far this season to being a recipient of a judges’ save, after performing Stevie Wonder’s “Master Blaster” following the news he received the lowest number of America’s votes. “This boy right here, we’ve been watching him for two years. You’re an amazing performer, and I stand by that,” Jennifer Lopez told him. “I think you have an amazing voice, and you’re gonna share a lot with the world, I really do believe that. [But] I only get one vote. I’m sorry, we’re not saving you tonight. I’m sorry, baby.” Host Ryan Seacrest asked Lopez if that meant she voted to save him and the other two judges didn’t. “Yes, that’s what I’m saying,” she said. Brackensick wound up in the doghouse despite receiving positive remarks from the judges Wednesday. Lopez called his performance “natural” and Steven Tyler called it “amazing,” while Randy Jackson told him, “It was one of my best performances from you.” Idol mentor Jimmy Iovine, however, had a different take. “DeAndre was not great!” he barked. “DeAndre needs to come out and grow at a much faster pace. If you look at the boys, Joshua [Ledet] is growing in leaps and bounds, and DeAndre is growing marginally.” Iovine called him the “weakest of the boys” on Wednesday. Iovine had harsh words for several of the contestants Thursday; he said Hollie Cavanagh “is approaching this like a high school performer, and last night wasn’t even a great high school performance,” while he said Elise Testone delivered “an old-fashioned choke.” (It goes without saying that Iovine has become by far the most interesting, honest judge on the show, even though he’s technically not even a judge. Can someone go ahead and change that, please?) It was Cavanagh and Testone, in fact, who joined Brackensick in the week’s bottom three. Brackensick was the first contestant sent to those lonely chairs, followed by Cavanagh and then Testone. Cavanagh was sent back to safety first, leaving Brackensick and Testone to sweat it out. Also on the show, the Wanted performed their hit “Glad You Came” and Kellie Pickler ran through her new single “Where’s Tammy Wynette,” while Jennifer Lopez debuted her “Dance Again” video .
