O-Town, ‘NSYNC make our list of boy bands that should get back together. Nick Lachey’s old group is rumored to be getting back together to launch a summer tour. Sources tell Rumorfix that the band, which has been on a decade-long hiatus, is about to announce a 15-city trek set to take place in July and August. A formal announcement should be made in the next week. One source told the site that the tour would serve as a thank-you to the band’s fans. Rumors of a reunion kicked off on Wednesday, when the band’s website got a face-lift that includes a spanking new logo and a Twitter feed with the guys’ official pages scrolling through the homepage. A rep for the band had not responded to MTV News’ request for comment by press time. Given all the love boy bands are getting these days ( see One Direction and the Wanted ), there are still some that might want to capitalize on the mania sweeping the world. Here are MTV News’ picks for the groups we’d love to see get back together. O-Town O-Town was the product of the reality show “Making the Band.” Once managed by imprisoned boy-band impresario Lou Pearlman, the guys managed to put their reality-show pedigree behind them and launched a short-lived, successful run that included hits like the chart-topping “Liquid Dreams.” ‘NSYNC This would be the gold-star reunion. ‘NSYNC and the Backstreet Boys were the two boy bands of the late-’90s revival that reached mega heights of fame and success. Several albums into their career, there appeared to be no stopping Justin Timberlake and the boys. But in 2002, they went on a “temporary hiatus” and have never looked back. Westlife Westlife plan to break up later this year after they wrap up their 2012 tour. But now seems like the right time to keep it going a little bit longer. Given America’s love for boy bands that hail from the U.K., Westlife, who found fame under the guidance of Simon Cowell and serenaded ladies with tracks like “Swear It Again,” might just want to stick around and ride out this latest wave of boy-band love. ‘She would give me that pop I need,’ last season’s fourth-place finisher tells MTV News of rumored addition to judges’ table. By Christina Garibaldi Marcus Canty Photo: MTV News During his final appearance on “The X Factor,” Marcus Canty promised his fans it was “not over” for him yet, and he was right. The fourth-place finisher, who wowed viewers with his energetic stage presence and smooth R&B style, recently signed to Epic Records and has released his debut single, “Won’t Make a Fool Out of You.” Yet at one time it seemed like we might never have heard his music at all. Before “X Factor” Canty tried but failed to get through the audition rounds for “American Idol.” “I tried ‘American Idol.’ I got in front of the judges, I sang my little heart out, but I guess I didn’t make it,” Canty revealed to MTV News. “I guess they didn’t want me.” “Idol” may not have wanted Canty, but “The X Factor” did. With help from his mother, Canty reluctantly decided to step in front of the judges, hoping to get his chance to go to Hollywood. “The funny thing is that I didn’t want to do ‘X Factor’ at first. I was just like, ‘Man, I’m gonna do it myself,’ then I look on the bill and I see L.A. Reid, and I’m like, ‘Wait a minute, that’s L.A. Reid!’ ” Canty said. “For so long I’ve been trying to get music to him. When it came that time, my mom was like, ‘Look, you should just try it.” With Reid as his mentor, Canty battled his way to a fourth-place finish with some show-stopping performances that gained him comparisons to Al Green and Bobby Brown. Canty also developed relationships with the other judges on the show, including former mentors Paula Abdul and Nicole Scherzinger . “I actually was kind of surprised,” Canty said of the departures of Abdul and Scherzinger. “I thought it was a lot of drama on the show with Paula and Nicole, but they were so nice.” Canty was no stranger to drama himself. The R&B crooner found himself in the bottom two during several episodes, most notably edging out Rachel Crow in an emotional and controversial finish . “I feel like Paula was honest. I feel like Nicole was honest — even in certain situations on the show that they got into, with me and Rachel and at one point, me and Drew,” Canty said. “If I was in that situation I probably wouldn’t know what to do.” With Scherzinger and Abdul out of the judges’ seats, rumors have been swirling that pop star Britney Spears may fill one of the vacant spots. “Oh wow, I haven’t heard that one. Britney Spears, wow. That should be interesting,” Canty said in response to the news. “Britney Spears can be my mentor because, first of all, I was the entertainer. That’s how long it’s been since Madonna and Lionel Richie were both in the top five of the Billboard 200 chart at the same time. The year was 1986, and Richie was riding high with his smash #1 album, Dancing on the Ceiling, while Madge was at #5 with her former #1, True Blue. Next week the pair will be chart mates again, as Madonna’s dance-tastic MDNA is predicted to sell between 300,000 and 350,000 copies to take the top spot, while Richie’s album of country re-workings of his biggest hits, Tuskegee, should land at #2 on sales of 125,000 to 150,000. Back in the day, both were celebrating the release of their third album. Madonna dedicated her “girliest” work to date to her then-husband, actor Sean Penn, even as she began delving into more topical songs (“Papa Don’t Preach”) and Latin rhythms (“La Isla Bonita”). For an artist who’d already ascended to pop stardom with her first two discs, True Blue was a chance for Madonna to expand her fanbase, and though it debuted at #28, it eventually reached #1, where it stayed for five weeks. Among the singles released from the album are “Live to Tell,” the title track and “Open Your Heart.” It went on to sell more than 25 million copies worldwide. For Richie, it was also a time of transition. The former Commodores singer — who was born in Tuskegee, Alabama — had scored some hits on his first two solo albums, including “My Love,” the Caribbean-spiced “All Night Long,” “Hello” and “Running With the Night.” While Madonna continues to be one of the biggest live draws in the world and a global superstar, Dancing on the Ceiling marked the beginning of the end of Richie’s mass popularity. But, the famously well-coiffed singer went out with a huge bang. Not only was the title cut a #1 single and hugely popular video, but the album also spawned the moving ballad “Say You, Say Me,” as well as “Love Will Conquer All” and “Ballerina Girl.” While Madonna continued to crank out hit albums such as Like a Prayer, Erotica and Bedtime Stories, it would be 10 years before Richie was back on the charts. His Louder Than Words came out in April 1996, debuting at #33 and not spawning any memorable hits. Against the usual pop music odds, Madonna is still launching singles onto the charts, recently played the most coveted gig in music — the Super Bowl halftime show — and has collaborated with modern stars like Nicki Minaj. Richie has been lower-profile, but served a well-received stint as a guest mentor on the second-biggest reality music competition on TV, “The Voice,” and he roped in such big-name country stars as Kenny Chesney, Shania Twain, Jason Aldean, Darius Rucker, Rascal Flatts, Sugarland’s Jennifer Nettles, Blake Shelton, Willie Nelson and old pal Kenny Rogers. Han, who with his goofball demeanor and off-center sense of humor was criticized heavily for not taking the competition seriously enough, ended up at the bottom of America’s votes following Wednesday’s performance episode, despite earning a standing ovation from the judges for his performance of Donny Hathaway’s “A Song for You.” He reprised the song for the judges in an effort to get them to use their one save for the season on him, but the judges let him go. “Let the record show that you knew this was coming yourself, you saw it come this week,” Steven Tyler told him. “Unfortunately after talking, we’re gonna have to let you go, man.” Just 24 hours earlier, Tyler had praised Han for turning himself around in the competition, and Jennifer Lopez reaffirmed his talents, telling him, “You didn’t make it this far by mistake.” Randy Jackson welcomed him back to the competition, telling him, “Finally, the Heejun that we selected came back to us tonight!” But the 22-year-old from Flushing, New York’s fate may have been sealed following his performance of Billy Joel’s “My Life” the week prior, which was met by a stinging critique from “Idol” mentor Jimmy Iovine. “He came out and disrespected the entire process. His performance was more like four minutes of a bad Adam Sandler movie that goes straight to DVD,” Iovine said, referring to it as a “stunt gone wrong.” “At the end of the day, Interscope has to spend a lot of money on somebody who wins this show, and that’s not it.” At the time, Han — who landed in second to last place following the performance — defended himself by saying, “I’m not trying to be a star, I’m just really happy where I am.” Han was in the bottom three Thursday with Hollie Cavanagh and Skylar Laine. Alicia Keys Mysteriously Declines An Offer To Appear On “Finding Your Roots” Dr. Henry Louis Gates is a foremost authority on Black history in America and the host of a TV program called “Finding Your Roots” where he does a thorough breakdown of celebrities’ (mostly African-America) family tree to give them more information about where they’re really from. Several celebs have participated in the PBS show including Chris Rock, Samuel L. Jackson, Barbara Walters, Condoleezza Rice, and Robert Downey Jr. to name a few. In a recent interview, Gates was asked if any celebs had ever decided to turn down the chance to discover their ancestry and he replied that indeed two people had rejected the offer. One of which was Colin Powell, the other, Grammy award-winning singer, mother, and wife of Swizz “Beaks” Beatz, Alicia Keys. Though Colin Powell simply stated that he “had too many cousins already” to participate, Alicia Keys reasoning for accepting, then later declining the offer was a little less specific. According to Dr. Gates : “Alicia Keys, who I love as a friend of mine, agreed to be in the first series, and as you know, she’s mixed. Her African-American grandmother said ‘Baby…’, we send people a form, we need as much information as you can give us. Like the names of your parents, where they were born, grandparents etc., whatever you can give us. It makes our job a lot simpler right? Her grandmother said ‘Baby, you can’t be in the series. I can’t tell you why, but you can’t be in the series.’ With so much diversity in her family it would have been very interesting to hear more about her parents background. But for whatever reason it sounds like Grandmama Keys might not have wanted the beans spilled about any shady goings-on that might have occured with the fam over the course of history. By Kelly Marino Heejun Han Photo: MTV News LOS ANGELES — The “American Idol” top nine took the stage once again Wednesday night hoping to avoid yet another elimination by singing their hearts out … and did they ever. Taking on songs by their own personal idols, the two-hour broadcast was filled with tearful moments, five standing ovations and, in Mr. Randy “In It to Win It” Jackson’s words, strong contenders for the title. Heejun Han may have made the biggest surprise comeback after being blasted last week by Jimmy Iovine and Steven Tyler for not taking the show seriously. Not to mention his leaving half of America scratching their heads as to why he was still in the competition after his goofball antics. This week it was obvious Han had a wake-up call as he took to the stage with a sincere rendition of Donny Hathaway’s “A Song for You,” ultimately bringing the judges to their feet. “What I can tell you at this point,” Han explained backstage after the show, “is that when someone doesn’t believe in himself and at that point someone said, ‘You don’t belong here. I’m not going to sign you. You’re not going to win,’ then my automatic reaction has to be ‘I know. I don’t want this.’ I never actually believed in myself anymore and even before. But from last week there were so many people that still believed in me and supported me, that’s when I realized I really want to do this. I’m not going to let anyone down anymore and that was a turning point.” And speaking of turning points, let’s not forget “Idol” contestant DeAndre Brackensick, who was also one of the five performers to get a standing ovation from the judges after being in last week’s bottom three. Taking on Eric Benet’s “Sometimes I Cry,” Brackensick even had J.Lo begging the audience to pick up their phones and vote. So, with some finalists back on the “Idol” radar while other’s outshined their own performances from the week before, who will America vote for to stay in the competition? Will this be yet another shocking results week, bringing the final nine down to eight, or will the judges finally be forced to use their one and only save for this week’s stellar performances? “No matter who is in the bottom three tomorrow [Thursday] night, they are going to be shockers because there were five standing ovations,” Colton Dixon, who sang himself to tears opening the show with Lifehouse’s “Everything,” explained. “Tonight was a great night for ‘American Idol.’ It was for every single one of us. We all left everything we had on the table and on the stage.” “I definitely think [Thursday] night will be shocking,” added Joshua Ledet, who brought the house down once again singing Mariah Carey’s version of “Without You.” “Honestly, I think everyone was so great tonight that the judges might use their save tomorrow because it would be crazy if they didn’t.” “It’s gonna be hard for us because, you know, when you get a standing ovation, it doesn’t necessarily mean you are gonna go pass through,” Han said. “It’s not really a matter of who’s on bottom three, but it’s really a matter of who’s going home and who’s gonna stay.
