Victory…kinda… The growing anti-SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act) support that has swept through the gaming and Internet community found a very big ally today. With websites like Reddit and Wikipedia and gaming organizations like Major League Gaming prepared for a blackout on January 18th – the same day that the House Judiciary Committee hearing on HR 3261was scheduled in Washington, DC – President Barack Obama has stepped in and said he would not support the bill. SOPA has been delayed, for now. The House has agreed to revisit the issue next month, but they now know the White House will veto any bill that’s not more narrowly focused. Much to the chagrin of Hollywood, the Entertainment Software Association (which has been a backer of the bill from early on), and Internet domain company GoDaddy.com (which lost many accounts as a result of its support for the bill); SOPA has been shelved. The Motion Picture Association of America, one of the bill’s largest sponsors, is expected to regroup. The White House released an official statement regarding the controversial matter, that reads in part: “Any provision covering Internet intermediaries such as online advertising networks, payment processors, or search engines must be transparent and designed to prevent overly broad private rights of action that could encourage unjustified litigation that could discourage startup businesses and innovative firms from growing,” said The White House. “We expect and encourage all private parties, including both content creators and Internet platform providers working together, to adopt voluntary measures and best practices to reduce online piracy.” SOPA is severely wounded, but far from dead. Just like piracy itself, this debate isn’t over. Expect more bills to move forward, although the wording in future legislation is expected to be more narrowly focused in an attempt to appease the current administration. But given the current economic climate and the upcoming Presidential election, there could be a different administration entering The White House soon, changing the landscape for these types of bills. Bottom line is, to protect these here internets we need to make sure we all VOTE! You already know what types of folks (Republicans) will be goin’ hard to make sure that some form of this bill passes and further restricts the free information sharing that we all use and depend on every single day. In front of by FAR the most raucous crowd of any Republican debate held thus far, the five remaining GOP hopefuls squared off in South Carolina last night. Ostensibly, everybody not named Mitt Romney angled to knock the frontrunner off his pedestal. In reality, it became a game of rhetorical one-upmanship. South Carolina GOP Debate The crowd cheered their support of U.S. soldiers urinating on dead Afghan bodies and their condemnation of the Obama administration’s condemnation of it. Newt Gingrich earned a standing ovation for this quote: “Andrew Jackson knew what to do with his enemies – he killed them.” How professorial he can be. Even Romney, the most vanilla of all candidates, got into the act, saying “The right thing for Osama bin Laden was the bullet in the head that he received.” No one here’s missing Osama, but really Mitt? The audience then jeered Ron Paul for suggesting that “we should practice the Golden Rule in foreign policy.” Nice to see we boo NOT bombing people. The yelled their approval of Rick Perry saying America should “go to zero on foreign aid.” They booed Juan Williams for questioning Newt’s big janitor idea . The South Carolina primary has a reputation for being a bloodbath, and last night’s rancor showed why. Just imagine if this race were in any way close.

Sullivan Ricky Gervais opens the 2012 Golden Globes Photo: HFPA/ NBC Ricky Gervais did exactly what the Hollywood Foreign Press Association hired him to do with his opening monologue at Sunday night’s (January 15) Golden Globes. He left the audience having to choose between laughing and cringing. Many of Hollywood’s biggest stars left the opener unscathed, a bit of a change from last year’s performance. Gervais still lived up to his reputation, however, and didn’t shy away from his signature brutal comedy style. Gervais opened his monologue with an appropriate question, considering how last year’s awards went. “Where was I?” he asked. “Nervous? Don’t be.” Despite all the talk of Gervais’ sharp wit before the show, he aimed the majority of his opening jokes at both the Globes themselves and NBC, the network airing the awards. Right off the bat, he joked, “Tonight, you get Britain’s biggest comedian, hosting the world’s second-biggest award show on America’s third-biggest network. Had his life not been cut short on April 4, 1968, Dr. King would have been 83 today. But he once said that his number of years were not what mattered: “Like anybody, I would like to live a long life. Longevity has its place. But I’m not concerned about that now. I just want to do God’s will. And He’s allowed me to go up to the mountain. And I’ve looked over. And I’ve seen the promised land. I may not get there with you. The Food Network’s Paula Deen is about to come clean with an ironic, sad admission: She can’t eat her own dishes anymore because she has diabetes. The Georgia-born chef, considered the queen of high-calorie, Southern comfort food who has five best-selling cookbooks, has never addressed this. In fact, she has been trying to keep her condition a secret , even after the National Enquirer reported in April 2011 that she has Type 2 diabetes. Type 2 diabetes has often been associated with fatty foods and obesity. Neither Paula Deen, 64, nor her reps have confirmed this report . If Paula’s brand is hurt by this revelation, she’s covering her bases. Sources say Deen has hammered out a seven-figure deal to be the spokeswoman pharmaceutical company Novartis, endorsing the drug she is taking. Makes sense. But repositioning herself may prove a tough task. “Paula Deen is going to have to rebrand herself now that she has diabetes,” said a source. “She’s going to have to start cooking healthier recipes.” “She can’t keep pushing mac and cheese and deep-fried Twinkies when she is hawking a diabetes drug five minutes later.” In August, No Reservations host Anthony Bourdain called Deen “the worst, most dangerous person to America” and said she should “think twice before telling an already obese nation that it’s OK to eat food that is killing us.” Never one to mince words, Anthony Bourdain.

The U.K. actor is Middle-earth’s most badass dwarf and One to Watch in 2012. By Kevin P. Sullivan Richard Armitage in “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” Photo: New Line Productions This winter, director Peter Jackson will deliver the long-awaited return to Middle-earth. “The Hobbit,” which will unfold across two films, begins with “An Unexpected Journey,” as Bilbo Baggins leaves to win back gold stolen from his companions. But these are not just any friends. Bilbo is accompanied by 13 dwarves, each with a larger-than-life personality. The leader of these adventurers, Thorin, will be played by Richard Armitage , who made a brief appearance in “Captain America: The First Avenger,” but will get his biggest Stateside break in “The Hobbit.” The British actor played a key role in last month’s trailer and will soon join the illustrious ranks of Tolkien alumni, alongside Viggo Mortensen, Sean Bean and Orlando Bloom. We spoke with Armitage about traveling to Middle-earth, the difficulty of working under pounds of makeup and leading a band of treasure-seeking dwarves. MTV : Congratulations on being named to MTV’s Ones to Watch! Richard Armitage : Thank you very much! MTV : Where are you currently in the filming schedule? Armitage : We just finished up our second block, so we start again at the end of January, and then we go — we think it’s the end of July. Then there’s a bit more in 2013, we reckon. MTV : What’s it like being on a single project for so long? Armitage : It’s really weird because when we started it was just this enormous mountain to climb, but actually, it’s going so fast. I think we’ve gotten to the halfway point now. It’s been really intense but so exciting. We literally just finished our location shoot that we’ve been out on the road seeing most of New Zealand. It’s been the best thing I’ve ever worked on in my life, by far. MTV : Is it easy to forget you’re acting? Do you get lost in the world the production creates? Armitage : The soundstages they made in Wellington, [New Zealand], most of the time it doesn’t feel like we’ve been working on a set. Even when there’s a green screen there, Peter’s vision of it is so clear and his description of it is so clear. The pre-production CGI that they’ve already created really fires up your imagination. That was the shoot we started with. On location, it’s just theirs to program these amazing images into your head, so we can now take them back into the studio. MTV : Will it be hard to leave behind once you’ve wrapped? Armitage : It don’t think it will be possible to leave it behind me. I think this is one of those characters that always stay with you because you spend so much time with him and it’s such a transformation. I’m in the character every day, and I’ve become so familiar with him. I sort of know how he thinks. I feel really close to the character, and he will continue beyond this job , [ spoiler ahead ] even though, he dies at the end of the movie. I think he is a fascinating character. I will probably wake up in six years’ time and be inspired to think about him again. It’s really exciting. MTV : How did your previous knowledge of the story change how you approached Thorin? Armitage : I read it quite a few times when I was young. I think going back to it as an adult is really interesting because it is a book that was, I think, was written for Tolkien’s children, but when you’re creating a piece on this scale, you have to really visualize it for a much broader audience. I think that’s the beauty of Tolkien. He does create very well-rounded, quite dangerous characters to play his protagonists. He risks scaring kids. He’s the original fantasy creator, and I think you have to invest those characters with the same gravity as if you were making a piece for adults. It was interesting coming back to it as an adult, re-reading it again, because it did have a simplicity to it, which I really like. I felt we could take those characters and really develop them beyond the book. MTV : You ended up with middle ground in terms of the amount of makeup. Did you feel lucky? Armitage : It did evolve. We all started with quite an extreme version of ourselves. I think because my character does spend a lot of time onscreen and you really have to understand what he’s going through emotionally, it became clear that if we started make the prosthetic as close to my features as possible but still make him a dwarf, it would be much easier to read the character. He has to go on such a journey, it was really important to do that. I grew my own beard after the first block because I felt that it was restricting my face. The jaw is so connected to emotion that I wanted to have that free. It made such a huge difference. It’s really weird now because I can’t play the character when I haven’t gotten everything on. It’s very hard to rehearse when you’re not in costume, when you haven’t gotten the prosthetics on, but I look in the mirror when it’s all finished and I don’t see it. I can’t see where it starts and where it ends. I just see the character. I’ve never had that before. It’s such a unique experience. It’s a face that doesn’t belong to me. It belongs to WETA workshop and the people that created it. MTV : How was it on set with so many actors playing the dwarves? Armitage : I love it. I absolutely love working as an ensemble member, and we really are an ensemble. There’s great camaraderie among all the guys. There is such a diversity of culture and background. We’re working with a lot of Kiwis, and there’s real mixture of British actors who come from television and theater and film. It’s exactly as the dwarves are. When Thorin assembles the quest, he pulls dwarves from all different places to go on this quest. That’s mirrored in who we are as actors. What are you waiting for?
