Idris Elba as James Bond, and 5 Other Roles That Could Benefit From Color-Blind Casting

The recent superhero boom has been a godsend for every young white guy in Hollywood, but what about the non-white actors who can’t even get an audition for the title roles in Thor or Captain America ? The buzz surrounding Donald Glover’s attempt to try out for Spider-Man is indicative of a wider problem: big action tentpoles are what traditionally launched black movie stars like Will Smith, but when those tentpoles are replaced by comic book adaptations, there are far fewer starring roles out there for anyone who isn’t a handsome white guy in his twenties. Can Hollywood think bigger? We’ve taken 6 iconic roles (both superhero and action hero) that have traditionally cast from a pool of white actors, and expanded that pool quite a bit. Here are our suggestions for casting directors who want to think outside the box:

The two-time Academy Award nominee’s career as an actor, artist, writer and director spanned six decades, and included a vast range of films from “Rebel Without a Cause” and “Easy Rider” to “Speed.” While no funeral or memorial plans have been announced, his many famous friends issued statements about his passing over the weekend. “Dennis introduced me to the world of Pop Art and ‘lost’ films,” Peter Fonda said about his “Easy Rider” co-star, director and co-writer, according to EW.com . “We rode the highways of America and changed the way movies were made in Hollywood. I was blessed by his passion and friendship.” A retrospective of Hopper’s photography and painting that was planned before his death will open next week at the Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art. Gene Hackman, who starred with Hopper in “Hoosiers,” honored the actor’s independent spirit. “As an actor, one is always taken by someone who is different,” Hackman said. “An iconoclast, Dennis was an artist, and I will always treasure having worked with him. He will be missed.” Fellow film great Isabella Rossellini, who co-starred in “Blue Velvet,” recalled working with Hopper during a transitional time in his life. “When I first met Dennis on the set of ‘Blue Velvet,’ he had just come out of rehab. I was afraid of him, but Dennis turned out to be infinitely kind, compassionate and understanding,” she said in a statement. “He had gone to hell and came back from it with great wisdom. It will take me a while to realize and accept he isn’t with us any longer.” Film critic Roger Ebert wrote on Twitter , “Dennis Hopper was born in Dodge City, and man, did he ever get out of Dodge.” Hopper was not only remembered by those who worked with him, but also by other celebrities who were touched by Hopper performances. “You take the great ones for granted until they’re gone. Whatever you do, DON’T call them Jihadis

Counterterror Adviser Defends Jihad as 'Legitimate Tenet of Islam' The president's top counterterrorism adviser on Wednesday called jihad a “legitimate tenet of Islam,” arguing that the term “jihadists” should not be used to describe America's enemies. During a speech at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, John Brennan described violent extremists as victims of “political, economic and social forces,” but said that those plotting attacks on the United States should not be described in “religious terms.” He repeated the administration argument that the enemy is not “terrorism,” because terrorism is a “tactic,” and not terror, because terror is a “state of mind” — though Brennan's title, deputy national security adviser for counterterrorism and homeland security, includes the word “terrorism” in it. But then Brennan said that the word “jihad” should not be applied either. “Nor do we describe our enemy as 'jihadists' or 'Islamists' because jihad is a holy struggle, a legitimate tenet of Islam, meaning to purify oneself or one's community, and there is nothing holy or legitimate or Islamic about murdering innocent men, women and children,” Brennan said. The technical, broadest definition of jihad is a “struggle” in the name of Islam and the term does not connote “holy war” for all Muslims. However, jihad frequently connotes images of military combat or warfare, and some of the world's most wanted terrorists including Usama bin Laden commonly use the word to call for war against the West. Brennan defined the enemy as members of bin Laden's Al Qaeda network and “its terrorist affiliates.” But Brennan argued that it would be “counterproductive” for the United States to use the term, as it would “play into the false perception” that the “murderers” leading war against the West are doing so in the name of a “holy cause.” “Moreover, describing our enemy in religious terms would lend credence to the lie propagated by Al Qaeda and its affiliates to justify terrorism — that the United States is somehow at war against Islam,” he said. The comment comes after Brennan, in a February speech in which he described his respect for the tolerance and devotion of Middle Eastern nations, referred to Jerusalem on first reference by its Arabic name, Al-Quds. “In all my travels the city I have come to love most is al-Quds, Jerusalem, where three great faiths come together,” Brennan said at an event co-sponsored by the White House Office of Public Engagement and the Islamic Center at New York University and the Islamic Law Students Association at NYU. “My name is Raymond J. Johnson, Jr. Now you can call me Ray, or you can call me J, or you can call me Johnny, or you can call me Sonny, or you can call me Junie, or you can call me Ray J, or you can call me RJ, or you can call me RJJ, or you can call me RJJ Jr…. but you doesn't hasta call me Mr. Johnson!” added by: curtisreed

Census workers can enter your apartment in your absence

Census workers can enter your apartment in your absence 6:00 am May 26, 2010, by Bob Barr Thousands of census workers, including many temporary employees, are fanning out across America to gather information on the citizenry. This is a process that takes place not only every decade in order to complete the constitutionally-mandated census; but also as part of the continuing “American Community Survey” conducted by the Census Bureau on a regular basis year in and year out. What many Americans don’t realize, is that census workers — from the head of the Bureau and the Secretary of Commerce (its parent agency) down to the lowliest and newest Census employee — are empowered under federal law to actually demand access to any apartment or any other type of home or room that is rented out, in order to count persons in the abode and for “the collection of statistics.” If the landlord of such apartment or other leased premises refuses to grant the government worker access to your living quarters, whether you are present or not, the landlord can be fined $500.00. That’s right — not only can citizens be fined if they fail to answer the increasingly intrusive questions asked of them by the federal government under the guise of simply counting the number of people in the country; but a landlord must give them access to your apartment whether you’re there or not, in order to gather whatever “statistics” the law permits. In fact, some census workers apparently are going even further and demanding — and receiving — private cell phone numbers from landlords in order to call tenants and obtain information from them. Isn’t it great to live in a “free” country? http://blogs.ajc.com/bob-barr-blog/2010/05/26/census-workers-can-enter-your-apar… ***DOES ANYONE ELSE FIND THIS DISTURBING?!*** added by: curtisreed

Hayley Williams Twitpic: Internet Security Expert Offers Advice On Protection

Safe passwords, avoid sexting are among the recommendations. By Gil Kaufman Hayley Williams Photo: Christopher Polk/ Getty Images When private pictures go public it’s always embarrassing, especially when you’re a celebrity and the whole world wants to look. The latest star to fall prey to a nude-pic hack is Paramore’s Hayley Williams , who told her 600,000-plus Twitter followers on Thursday that someone had jacked her account. The Tweet was in response to a topless photo of the 21-year-old singer that began making the rounds that day, which Williams alleged was sent out without her consent by someone who cracked her Twitpic account, but which some online reports suggested may have been accidentally posted by the singer and then quickly removed — but not before it began rocketing across the Internet. Internet privacy and security lawyer Dr. Parry Aftab — who was one of the experts in MTV’s recent “Sexting In America: When Privates Go Public” special — said on Friday (May 28) that there are a number of relatively simple ways to make sure your private business stays that way. “It all starts with good digital hygiene,” said Aftab. “It’s like brushing your teeth twice a day so you won’t get cavities and won’t offend the person sitting across from you. The first step is picking a password that easy to remember but hard to get.” Aftab said the mistake most people make is choosing a password from the “20 questions” list, which include such obvious things as your middle name, favorite sports team, the street you live on or your pet’s name, all information that is easy to obtain if you are a public figure. That, she noted, is how a kid from France was able to hack President Obama’s Twitter account earlier this year by guessing that the leader of the free world used the First Dog Bo’s name as his password. “If you don’t use a password that’s hard to guess, anyone can figure it out, but you also don’t want one that’s so hard for you to remember that you have to write it down, because then someone can find it,” she warned. The other hygienic practice she recommends is not pre-saving passwords on computers, iPads or other digital devices. Though it is a time saver and might help you avoid fumbling for the right password, Aftab said if anyone else uses the device, it could spell trouble. “If you have an assistant or you share the device with a friend — or someone you think is your friend — it allows them access to all your special stuff,” she said. “And that’s like pre-saving your ATM number. You just don’t want to store that on any device that someone else can access. It’s like locking your door instead of leaving it wide open.” And while Aftab recommends keeping intimate moments completely private, if you are going to sext, she said to remove the salacious images from any device where they can be shared. “If you’re taking a naked picture, the best thing is not to text it,” she said. “You’re better off printing it out and handing it to him, but even that can be scanned and texted out. Anything in a digital format exists forever, and you can never really protect it. It’s the law of negativity in the universe: If it’s there, it will be found.” If you are a victim of a sexy picture gone viral, Aftab said the next best thing you can do is stop it as fast as you can. “When you’re on Twitter and your followed by a gazillion people you can’t really stop it,” she said. “But you can try to delete it. If someone hacked it or it got sent out by accident, which happens all the time, that’s why you don’t keep it in a place where it can be sent out accidentally by clicking a button.” Aftab doesn’t just issue warnings and advice, she has also been working with Twitter on a Verified Twitter program that is now in beta testing and is similar to the one she set up Faceook called the Certified Celebrity Program. “My consulting firm [Wired Trust] is doing it as a free service for celebrities to confirm who they are, so Facebook will protect those pages and nobody can try to take them over unless they’re authorized though a special thing we have set up through Facebook,” she said. Like the Facebook program, the new Twitter tool will allow celebrities to keep their profiles on lock and, if need be, act quickly in case something goes awry. “If Twitter knows you’re a verified celebrity and something happens, there’s a special contact that can shut things down in a heartbeat,” she said. Celebrities aren’t the only ones vulnerable to digital drama. Go to MTV’s AThinLine.org to learn what you can do to protect yourself. Related Artists Paramore

Tom Cruise Confirms He’s Not Dead

‘I’m a hologram,’ Cruise jokes about online rumors he had died in New Zealand. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Tom Cruise Photo: Andrew H. Walker/Getty Images On Friday morning (May 28), as the good people of America prepared themselves for the long Memorial Day weekend by packing their bags and heading off to the beach, a rumor began spreading online that Tom Cruise had died. Word was, the actor died in an accident while in New Zealand. But MTV News can confirm that the “Knight And Day” star is very much alive, and we got the word from Cruise himself. He just happened to be on the phone with MTV News on Friday, calling from London with Will.I.Am to promote the Black Eyed Peas’ single “Someday,” the theme song from the upcoming film. When asked if he could confirm that he was alive, he joked, “No, I’m not. I’m a hologram.” Cruise clearly seemed to be enjoying the rumor. “I’m really alive,” he said. “Did the Internet get it wrong again?” When told how he reportedly died, in a plumbing accident in New Zealand, he laughed saying, “Get out.” But he got serious for a moment to reassure his fans. “Yes, you can send the message out [that I am still alive].” Cruise is the latest celebrity whose death has been erroneously reported on the Internet. Everyone from Britney Spears to Justin Bieber to Jeff Goldblum has been the victim of a similar hoax. Are celeb death hoaxes funny or sick? Sound off in the comments.
