Two activist receive $100,000 bail for non-violent protest at Massey Regional HQ

We teach our children to care for the earth. We teach them to defend their home and we say that the flag of these United States of America unifies us as a nation, that our country is their home. We teach them to take responsibility and speak out boldly against the tyranny of injustice and evil men. And them we jail them and label them as terrorists. It's just as likely that Bill Massey is a mass murderer. It is just as likely that the deaths of 29 miners in West Virginia were acts of murder funded by JPMorgan Chase in an effort to silence a growing internal resistance to Mountain Top Removal Mining or a group of miners intent on speaking out against repeated Massey Energy safety violations, the modern equivalent of burning them in a church, a longstanding tradition of West Virginia coal mine operators. A $100,000 suggests collaboration between Massey Energy and the West Virginia judicial system. It represents a war crime, an atrocity committed by felons against the children on the front lines of the Coal War. Who are we in America to stand in collusion by allowing evil men to prosper while our sons and daughters face brutal attacks for peaceful acts of courage? Who are we to sit in silent witness to the brutal murder of 29 miners and the weeping of their sons and daughters and wives and mothers? EmmaKate Martin and Benjamin Bryant are to be commended not condemned for their actions. They defended our mountains against the true eco-terrorists. They acted bravely just like we taught them to in school, to defend American soil against all enemies, foreign and domestic and we made it a crime of the highest order at a time when they should be decorated as heroes. http://itsgettinghotinhere.org/2010/05/17/two-activist-receive-100000-bail-for-n… added by: Willowguy

Nun at St. Joseph’s Hospital (Phoenix) "Rebuked" Over Abortion Decision to Save Woman

Nun at St. Joseph's Hospital rebuked over abortion to save woman by Michael Clancy – May. 15, 2010 12:00 AM The Arizona Republic Read more: http://www.azcentral.com/12news/news/articles/2010/05/15/20100515phoenix-catholi… A Catholic nun and longtime administrator of St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center in Phoenix was reassigned in the wake of a decision to allow a pregnancy to be ended in order to save the life of a critically ill patient. The decision also drew a sharp rebuke from Bishop Thomas J. Olmsted, head of the Phoenix Diocese, who indicated the woman was “automatically excommunicated” because of the action. Neither the hospital nor the bishop's office would address whether the bishop had a direct role in her demotion. He does not have control of the hospital as a business but is the voice of moral authority over any Catholic institution operating in the diocese. The actions involving the administrator, mostly taken within the past couple of weeks, followed a last-minute, life-or-death drama in late 2009. The patient had a rare and often fatal condition in which a pregnancy can cause the death of the mother. Sister Margaret McBride, who had been vice president of mission integration at the hospital, was on call as a member of the hospital's ethics committee when the surgery took place, hospital officials said. She was part of a group of people, including the patient and doctors, who decided upon the course of action. The patient was not identified, and details of her case cannot be revealed under federal privacy laws. The Catholic Church forbids abortion in all circumstances and allows the termination of a pregnancy only as a secondary effect of other treatments, such as radiation of a cancerous uterus. The hospital defended the ethics committee's decision. In a statement, Suzanne Pfister, a hospital vice president, said that the facility adheres to the Ethical and Religious Directives for Catholic Health Care Services but that the directives do not answer all questions. “In this tragic case, the treatment necessary to save the mother's life required the termination of an 11-week pregnancy,” Pfister said. Pfister issued the four-paragraph statement on behalf of the hospital, its parent company Catholic Healthcare West, and the Sisters of Mercy, McBride's religious order. McBride was part of the discussion about the surgery, described as urgent. It involved a serious illness, pulmonary hypertension. The condition limits the ability of the heart and lungs to function and is made worse, possibly even fatal, by pregnancy. In a statement issued to The Republic late Friday, the diocese confirmed that Olmsted learned of the case after the surgery. “I am gravely concerned by the fact that an abortion was performed several months ago in a Catholic hospital in this diocese,” Olmsted said. “I am further concerned by the hospital's statement that the termination of a human life was necessary to treat the mother's underlying medical condition. “An unborn child is not a disease. While medical professionals should certainly try to save a pregnant mother's life, the means by which they do it can never be by directly killing her unborn child. The end does not justify the means.” Olmsted added that if a Catholic “formally cooperates” in an abortion, he or she is automatically excommunicated. Excommunication forbids the person from participating in church life. Remedies are available through an appeal to the Vatican or confession. “The Catholic Church will continue to defend life and proclaim the evil of abortion without compromise, and must act to correct even her own members if they fail in this duty,” the bishop said. It is unknown whether the bishop took action against the others who were involved in the matter, and Pfister would not answer questions about the physicians involved in the surgery. Neither Olmsted nor his spokesman at the Phoenix Diocese would answer additional questions. Although Olmsted does not have direct control of the hospital, his authority as bishop over Catholic institutions is substantial. For one thing, religious orders work in the Valley at his invitation. In an e-mail, Pfister said McBride has been transferred “to another position in the hospital to focus on a number of new strategic initiatives.” According to the medical directives that the hospital follows, abortion is defined as the directly intended termination of pregnancy, and it is not permitted under any circumstances – even to save the life of the mother. On the other hand, a second directive says that “operations, treatments and medications that have as their direct purpose the cure of a proportionately serious pathological condition of a pregnant woman are permitted . . . even if they will result in the death of the unborn child.” A letter sent Monday from Catholic Healthcare West, signed by Sister Judith Carle, board chairwoman, and President and CEO Lloyd Dean, asks Olmsted to provide further clarification about the directives. Agreeing that in a healthy mother, pregnancy is “not a pathology,” it says this case was different. The pregnancy, the letter says, carried a nearly certain risk of death for the mother. “If there had been a way to save the pregnancy and still prevent the death of the mother, we would have done it,” the letter says. “We are convinced there was not.” James J. Walter, professor of bioethics at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, a Catholic university, said that is a tough argument to make. He said a pregnancy may be terminated only in limited, indirect circumstances, such as uterine cancer, in which the cancer treatment takes the life of the fetus. Catholic teaching, he said, is that a pregnancy cannot be terminated as a means to an end of saving the life of a mother who is suffering from a different condition. Asked if the church position prefers the mother and child to die, rather than sparing the life of one of them, Walters said the hope is that both would survive. Not all faith groups see things the same way. The Jewish tradition, the Mormon Church and the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America are among the groups that frown on abortion on demand but permit it when the life of the mother is at stake or if the mother is impregnated by rape or incest. McBride declined to be interviewed. She was the highest-ranking member of the Sisters of Mercy at the hospital, which the order founded in 1895. ACLU Files Lawsuit Against Arizona’s Racial Profiling Law

“A coalition of leading rights organizations will hold a national media call to announce and discuss the filing of its legal challenge to Arizona's unconstitutional racial profiling law. The coalition includes the American Civil Liberties Union; MALDEF; National Immigration Law Center (NILC); the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP); the National Day Laborer Organizing Network (NDLON) and Asian Pacific American Legal Center (APALC), a member of the Asian American Center for Advancing Justice.” In my opinion the police have too much power in our country to enforce laws that unfairly target minorities and the poor. Giving them a license to “demand your papers” is not American. This is just a backlash against the influx of immigration that has been vilified by the right. We need to fight poverty, the real world enemy, not make people into separate racial categories. No matter how angry people who have already immigrated to America get, someone who needs to feed themselves or their family will listen to their poverty and hope – not your anger. ❤ http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/10137/1058777-84.stm http://www.google.com/hostednews/afp/article/ALeqM5jXrin5h7Hn8OoVwIwyXerEzwHacA added by: Denica_Cassandra

‘Iron Man 2’ Director Jon Favreau Wants The Mandarin For Third Movie

‘I’m curious to see how they handle all that stuff,’ Favreau says of Marvel Studios’ other superhero characters. By Larry Carroll, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Jon Favreau Photo: MTV News Every great franchise deserves to be a trilogy — if not for the fans, then perhaps for the director who might appreciate a few extra hours to fully flesh out his tale. Nowadays, Jon Favreau is getting ready to unleash his second “Iron Man” movie on the world — and he readily admits that the idea of a trilogy appeals to him. “It does. I would like to [do another film],” he explained, before admitting that the biggest obstacle may be one unlike any director before him has ever had to deal with: a backlog of superhero movies from his studio that will be twisting, changing and growing his characters with minimal input from Favreau over the next few years. ” ‘Iron Man 3,’ to pay it off, there’s so much left to understand about what the world is going to be like then,” the filmmaker reasoned. “You’ve got ‘Thor,’ ‘Captain America,’ ‘Avengers’ all happening with different directors before ‘Iron Man 3,’ and that’s all going to affect ‘Iron Man 3.’ ” With each of those Avengers heroes receiving their own films between now and 2012, Tony Stark will be glimpsed as a secondary player, if at all. And it won’t be until after “The Avengers” that Marvel Studios will be willing to revisit the character. “And what’s going to have happened by then?” Favreau asked, not knowing the answer himself. “With ‘Thor,’ you’re going to have all this supernatural stuff happening, and magic. There’s a lot of stuff going on in the world; if it’s going to match the comic book, it’s going to be incredibly complex for a film. I’m curious to see how they handle all that stuff.” Much like Christopher Nolan’s Batman films, Favreau has built a franchise based on heightened reality. Yeah, you and I may not be able to build flying suits, lightning-whip weapons or repulsor-beam weaponry, but it seems more reasonable than superheroic men leaping tall buildings in a single bound. Favreau revealed that he has firm plans about who his desired “Iron Man 3” villain would be — and if the next few Marvel films develop as he hopes they do, perhaps supernatural elements will seem more reasonable in a few years. “You’ve got to do the Mandarin ,” Favreau said of the next “Iron Man” baddie, a martial-arts expert who has superhuman powers that can tear apart Iron Man’s suit with his bare hands. “The problem with the Mandarin is that the way it’s depicted in the comic books, you don’t want to see that. “He has 10 magical rings — that just doesn’t feel right for our [franchise],” the director reasoned. “So it’s either tech-based, or the rings are not really rings. But maybe with Thor and all those others, you’ll introduce magic to that world and it won’t seem so out of place.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Iron Man 2.” For breaking news and previews of the latest comic book movies — updated around the clock — visit SplashPage.MTV.com . Jay Sean Agrees With Usher’s Comments: ‘Longevity Trumps Everything’

Usher recently said British R&B stars like Sean and Taio Cruz ‘have a lot to prove.’ By Akshay Bhansali Jay Sean Photo: Nuzhat Naoreen/ MTV News With two monster singles in “Down” (featuring Lil Wayne) and “Do You Remember” (featuring Sean Paul and Lil Jon) , British pop/R&B singer Jay Sean has delivered for Cash Money Records and his fans around the world. Sean recently invited MTV News into the New York studio of the Orange Factory — the production team behind the majority of his debut album, All or Nothing — to let fans know that he’s already moved on to his next album. In fact, he’s roughly three-quarters done with it. Still, as eager as Sean was to introduce us to the direction and tone of his forthcoming project, he was also aware of some comments lobbied at him by a fellow R&B star. A few weeks back, while on a promotional tour, Usher spoke to MTV UK’s Wrap-Up urban blog and was asked what he thought of the Stateside success of British R&B artists like Sean and “Break Your Heart” singer Taio Cruz. “Sustaining longevity is all about time,” Usher said. “They have a lot to prove.” While Sean could have responded aggressively the comments, he went a different route. “He’s been in the game for, what, 17 years? I completely agree with what he says,” Sean said. “Longevity trumps everything. America has only heard one album. “I’ve only had four Billboard top 20’s in America so far,” Sean said with a smile. “But that’s still new.” Some music fans aren’t even aware of Sean’s chart assault, which gained the attention of Ronald “Slim” Williams, co-CEO of Cash Money Records, and eventually led to his joining the CM roster. “Outside of America, maybe Usher doesn’t know that I’ve been touring and recording for seven years,” Sean said. “This [ All or Nothing follow-up] is my fourth studio album. I’ve had a couple of multiplatinum albums on my own record label. But he wouldn’t know that if he didn’t do his research or nobody told him.” With that said, it appears Sean agrees that a solid career in the music industry is defined by consistency and quality. And he eagerly awaits the opportunity to share his new material with an ever-growing American fanbase. “I’m so new to America,” he said. “I’ve got so much more to show them, so much more to give them.” What do you think of Sean’s music? Could he match Usher’s lengthy career? Let us know in the comments! Related Videos MTV News Extended Play: Jay Sean Related Artists Jay Sean Usher
