Sir Elton John and David Furnish have tied the knot. The longtime partners formally converted their civil partnership of nearly a decade to a marriage yesterday. The famous couple hosted a ceremony at their Windsor estate in Berkshire, UK, but first, filled out the necessarily legal paperwork to make it official. Elton said: “That’s the legal bit done. Now on to the ceremony.” John and Furnish formed a civil partnership way back in 2005. In March of this year, England and Wales changed their laws to allow same sex marriage. Elton said at the time he was “very proud” of Britain for the change. “Having our civil partnership,” the 67-year-old singing legend said, was an “incredible breakthrough” in itself, considering the world in which he came of age. “For people that campaigned for a long time – through the ’60s and the ’50s in England when it was to be gay and hard to be open about it. And it was a criminal act.” “So for this legislation to come through is joyous.” “We should celebrate it,” he said. “We shouldn’t just say, ‘Oh, well we have a civil partnership. We’re not going to bother to get married’. We will get married .” The couple has been together since at least 1993. They have adopted two sons together, Zachary, who was born in 2010 and Elijah, born last year. John first came out publicly back in 1988. David and Victoria Beckham, Helena Bonham Carter and Sir Michael Caine were among guests at their reception, from which we expect there will be many photos soon.
