Katie Couric Laments Ann Curry Firing

Katie Couric may have left The Today Show in 2006, but she still has some strong opinions regarding the current state of the program. Specifically, its handling of Ann Curry . And they aren’t very positive. “I felt really bad for Ann. I still don’t understand why they didn’t give her sort of a proper send-off,” Couric told Philly.com this week as part of her promotion for Katie , which premieres on September 10, adding: “Ann did some extraordinary work during her time there. It was just not the best chapter in The Today Show . It made me sad for the institution.” That’s for sure. Ratings for the program haven’t picked up and there’s reportedly even chatter that many employees want Matt Lauer gone next . The juggernaut has fallen has very hard times. Couric, though, kicks off her talk show next month and has booked Jessica Simpson and Sheryl Crow as her opening day guests. She says she’s inspired by Oprah, but… “When people say, ‘Are you the new Oprah?’ I say, ‘No, I’m the old Katie.'”

Robin Roberts Speaks on "Respect" for Ann Curry, GMA Versus Today Show Rivalry

They may have been rivals for approximately one year, and Good Morning America overtaking The Today Show in the ratings may have led to Ann Curry’s departure from the latter program, but that doesn’t mean Robin Roberts was happy to see her fellow journalist go. Appearing on Piers Morgan Tonight yesterday, Robert said she doesn’t “take joy” in watching The Today Show fall apart, not when there are actual human beings in the other end. “Let me tell you, the morning that Ann [Curry] said her goodbye , we were watching,” Robins said. “And on our program, which you don’t see very often, we spent the last couple of minutes talking about Ann Curry…and appreciating her, and such great respect.” Roberts, of course, has gone through her own emotional journey this year, having just returned to the GMA co-anchor chair after a few weeks ago. Five months after beating breast cancer, Robins revealed this summer that she is battling a rare blood and bone marrow disorder. A bone marrow transplant is scheduled for early September. Savannah Guthrie Debuts as Today Show Host; Ann Curry Not Mentioned Once

If you tuned in to NBC’s Today for the first time Friday and observed Savannah Guthrie alongside Matt Lauer, you’d never have known Ann Curry existed. The morning show opened with Guthrie and Lauer behind the desk, minus the usual voiceover announcing the anchors or graphics identifying them. Matt and Savannah simply launched right into the news. Even at 9 a.m., when Savannah Guthrie typically handles the bulk of the show’s content, there was zero mention of the shakeup, which became official with Ann Curry’s farewell speech on Today not even 24 hours prior. Instead, she, Lauer and Al Roker segued from a Maroon 5 performance to local news, weather and Guthrie running solo on the first segment of the hour. She later was joined by Roker and Natalie Morales, who was reportedly in the running to replace Curry (which could have led to Matt Lauer’s divorce ). Though Guthrie (pictured) is presumed to be Curry’s successor, especially after what we witnessed today, NBC has yet to make an official announcement. [Photo: WENN.com]

Megan Fox Baby Bump: Confirmed!

She might get mad at us for bringing this up, but Megan Fox is totally pregnant. News of the gorgeous actress and husband Brian Austin Green expecting their first child came out in April, but Fox has thus far been loathe to confirm the impending child. But a camera does not lie. And People Magazine has very clearly caught a glimpse of Fox and her baby bump , as this couple has been vacationing in Hawaii for the past few days. Green – who looks about ready to kill the paparazzi who dared to snap the picture above – has a 10-year son, Kassius, from a previous relationship. He’s on record as saying Fox is an “amazing stepmom.” Now, whether they want to admit it or not, the beauty will have a chance to be an amazing mother in the near future.

Savannah Guthrie or Ann Curry: Who Would You Rather… Watch?

Ann Curry will be fired from The Today Show any moment now. So reports TMZ, which claims the anchor and the NBC morning program are simply haggling over contract details . Curry is owed $20 million over the next two years and reportedly wants to pocket that dough and take her walking papers, while the network wants to give her half that amount and stick her as a foreign correspondent. Either way, Savannah Guthrie has already struck a deal with Today and will take over for Curry as soon as she leaves, which prompts the obvious question: Which reporter would you rather… watch?

Ann Curry Firing to Cost The Today Show Millions

If/when Ann Curry gets fired from Today , it will cost NBC a pretty penny. Actually, many pretty pennies. More pretty pennies than a celebrity gossip website knows how to count. Network insiders tell TMZ that Curry is definitely a goner next week, and that the ousting will cost NBC close to $30 million because the co-host signed a long-term contract in 2011 that guarantees her $10 million/year. That number ought to soften the blow, huh? Curry is also rumored to become a foreign correspondent for NBC News, a capacity that will involve… who cares?!? $30 million?!? YEESH!

Today Show Previews Glenn Beck Rally: Watch Out For Signs With ‘Racist Overtones’

NBC’s Tom Costello, on Friday’s Today show, in previewing Glenn Beck’s rally at the Lincoln Memorial this weekend, focused on the racial insensitivity of the Tea Partiers as he reminded NBC’s viewers that at last year’s  rally in Washington “there were a lot of signs that had rather racist overtones. The concern is that might be repeated this time. By the way, many Beck followers, who are coming, are being urged to avoid African-American areas and avoid conflict.” Costello began his story noting that while “Glenn Beck says that Dr. King is a hero of his” he is still “defiant in his right to be here” and then went on to cite political analyst Stu Rothenberg in insisting “this weekend’s event could carry risk for Republicans.” The following is the full Costello story as it was aired on the August 27 Today show: ANN CURRY: Radio and Fox News host Glenn Beck is promising a massive rally in Washington this weekend to, quote, “Restore honor in America.” He plans to do it at the same spot and on the anniversary of Martin Luther King’s “I have a dream” speech and that is stirring some controversy. NBC’s Tom Costello is at the Lincoln Memorial this morning with more on this. Tom, good morning. [On screen headline: “‘Restoring Honor’ Glenn Beck’s Rally On MLK Anniversary”] TOM COSTELLO: Ann, good morning to you. And Glenn Beck says that Dr. King is a hero of his, and for that reason he will not stand on the same step that Dr. King stood on in 1963. He plans to stand a few steps below that. That said, he is defiant in his right to be here. What happened on this very spot 47 years ago tomorrow was among the most pivotal moments in American history. DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING JR.: I have a dream today. COSTELLO: But conservative host Glenn Beck also has a dream. GLENN BECK: We will mutually pledge to each other our lives, our fortunes and our sacred honor. COSTELLO: Beck is hoping his rally this weekend will rival last year’s anti-tax rally that attracted tens, perhaps hundreds of thousands of people, many of them tea party activists. Increasingly Beck has been evoking the civil rights movement and says this weekend is about restoring honor in America. He also insists he did not realize it was the anniversary of the March on Washington but, he says, that shouldn’t matter. BECK: I’m sorry. African-Americans don’t own Martin Luther King. It’s a human idea just like white people don’t own George Washington or Abraham Lincoln. COSTELLO: But Beck’s comments about race have sometimes been inflammatory. BECK: This president, I think, has exposed himself as a guy over and over and over again who has a deep-seated hatred for white people or the white culture. I don’t know what it is. SARAH PALIN: Do you love your freedom? COSTELLO: And joining Beck this weekend will be former Governor Sarah Palin, who last week defended talk show host Laura Schlessinger’s repeated use of the “n” word, as freedom of speech, saying it wasn’t being used in a racist manner. DR. LAURA SCHLESSINGER: And I’ll say it again *bleep* *bleep* *bleep* COSTELLO: While Beck insists this is a nonpolitical gathering, analyst Stu Rothenberg says this weekend’s event could carry risk for Republicans. STU ROTHENBERG: The Republican Party needs conservatives, needs the Tea Party activists but the Republican Party does not want to be defined by Tea Partiers or Glenn Beck. COSTELLO: Activist Reverend Al Sharpton, will also be in D.C., Saturday leading a march to mark the MLK anniversary but promises to avoid confrontation. AL SHARPTON: To go and confront him is to make it about him. That would, in my opinion and the opinion of many that are participating with us that day, would mock the memory of Dr. King. COSTELLO: So why this weekend? Beck says maybe it was meant to be. BECK: I believe in divine providence. It was not my intention it to select 8/28 because of the Martin Luther King tie. COSTELLO: Also, Beck says that he believes this is about reclaiming civil rights. Importantly, he says, they will not allow any campaign signs here at all. That may be rather tough to enforce given the scope and the size of this place. The trouble is, of course, last year there were a lot of signs that had rather racist overtones. The concern is that might be repeated this time. By the way, many Beck followers, who are coming, are being urged to avoid African-American areas and avoid conflict. Ann, back to you. CURRY: Okay. We’ll see what happens. Tom Costello, thanks a lot.
