Rihanna Gives Fans ‘Another Twist’ In ‘California King Bed,’ Director Says

Anthony Mandler discusses working with the superstar singer, with whom he’s collaborated more than a dozen times. By Jocelyn Vena Rihanna Photo: Getty Images Rihanna showed off her pale-hued softer side in her “California King Bed” video . A sweeping, romantic look at the demise of a relationship is perfectly encapsulated in the Anthony Mandler-directed clip. Rihanna and Mandler are certainly not strangers when it comes to collaborating, having made more than a dozen clips together, ranging from the fun “Only Girl (In the World)” to the dark “Russian Roulette.” When MTV News recently spoke to Mandler, he noted that he and Ri brought out a whole new side to the always-changing singer. “I think it’s something that is so unique about Rihanna whatever she’s doing, whatever character she’s playing, whatever side of herself she’s showing, she’s in it 1,000 percent,” he explained. “They’re all twists and variations on herself, and in each of them, the way she pushes the visual and the way she pushes the styling and the look of it, she really kind of gives them another twist on Rihanna. “And I think the song and the theme of this song, she wanted to obviously show a softer side, a lighter side, one that’s caught in maybe a tumultuous relationship,” he continued. “But not let the tumultuous relationship dominate the visual, really counterbalance it with tension-filled chaotic beauty.” Instead of finding a scenic location on which to shoot the video, they built their own set in order to have control over the elements of the video. Rihanna gave Mandler a “basic foundation,” and from there, he put his magic on what he describes as a “really pure beauty video with a story line underneath.” Having shot both a softer-edge Rihanna and a harder-edged one, Mandler weighed in on which he prefers. “There’s so much variety with her and it’s been such a journey with her,” he said. “It’s hard to say which one I enjoy more than the other. I just enjoy working with her, so whatever that means. … There are gray shades that are brilliant that I’m constantly discovering.” Related Artists Rihanna

‘Scream 4’ Stars Pick Their Favorite Death Scenes

‘What freaks me out the most with all the deaths is the sound effects,’ Emma Roberts tells MTV News. By Kara Warner Courteney Cox in “Scream 4” Photo: Gemma La Mana/ Dimension Films For those of you who didn’t make it to the theater over the weekend to see “Scream 4,” stop reading now — we don’t want to spoil anything! For everyone else, MTV News thought it would be fun to find out the cast’s favorite death scenes in the new slasher pic, along with some technical insight from director Wes Craven. And because there are so many gruesome offings from which to choose, the results of our little poll are all over the map, despite some persuasive campaigning by Anthony Anderson. “I think the one that freaked me out the most, her name is Marielle in real life — Marielle’s death,” Emma Roberts said, choosing the bloody demise of Marielle Jaffe’s character, Olivia Morris. “It’s one of the first, and she’s the popular girl, but she gets massacred. Totally just done. “That, to me, was the freakiest, because she’s running around her room, and they keep stabbing her and stabbing her,” she added. “I guess what freaks me out the most with all the deaths is the sound effects. When you’re doing it, it’s like a retractable knife and there’s fake blood squirting out, but when you have that sound effect, it totally adds another level of horror to the scene.” Adam Brody’s favorite death involved the special cameos from Kristen Bell and Anna Paquin. “I thought that was one of the more surprising ones,” he said, before pointing to his co-star Anthony Anderson. “And then he’s got a fantastic, dragged-out [scene].” “Yeah, I’m going to say the black guy’s death in this movie is great,” Anderson joked. “I’m not going to say who it is, though, but the black guy’s death in this movie. NAACP Image Award contention. We’re going to go beyond Oscar and Emmy and Golden Globe; we’re going to go straight to the Image Awards.” When asked how many takes it took to get that one just right, Brody and Anderson joked that there was a lot of work to it. “I think they really worked that scene,” Anderson said. “They shot that from all kinds of angles.” “[There were] 30 cameras,” Brody added. “Yeah, 30 cameras,” Anderson agreed, continuing the joke. “And some of it was the super slo-mo stuff, so yeah, the black guy.” Interestingly enough, when we mentioned Anderson’s epic death scene to Craven, he revealed that the drawn-out aspect wasn’t originally in the script but inspired by a real-life medical emergency. “That wasn’t in the script,” Craven said. “I did it without announcing it to the studio. I was hoping that they didn’t fire me the next day,” he recalled with a chuckle. “It was written that the killer just comes in and pins him to the seat,” Craven explained. “I had seen this thing on television, this documentary about somebody being stabbed right through the head and they actually showed the X-ray … and the guy walked into the emergency room, so I thought it would be extraordinary if somebody was stabbed in the head and still be alive for a while.” The fact that Anderson was campaigning for his death scene to be named the best won over co-star David Arquette. “I do love a good Anthony Anderson death scene,” he laughed. “He was a little zombie-like. There was a moment of ‘Night of the Living Dead’ [in there].” Check out everything we’ve got on “Scream 4.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . ‘American Idol’ In 60 Seconds: Stop The Clock For Pia

Is it America’s fault Pia Toscano got the boot, or is it the judges’? By Jim Cantiello Pia Toscano on “American Idol” Photo: FOX Jim Cantiello’s “American Idol” in 60 Seconds recaps have been an institution at MTV News since Sanjaya’s Reign of Terror. But sometimes, the lightning-quick pace moves by so fast, you occasionally miss a joke, comment or sight gag. So, as a courtesy to our loyal watchers, we’re publishing the full script of Jim’s latest recap. This week, the top nine (and Scotty’s groupies) tackled rock and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame artists! [ Clip of Steven Tyler singing James Brown. And high kicking. For no reason. ] Wait, is Steven competing now? Can we vote him off? Will.i.am mentored the top nine while speaking in funny voices and refusing to make eye contact with them. [ Will.i.am exclaims, “Sammy!” ] Pia listened to the judges and finally did a fast song, Casey listened to the judges and finally did a bass song, and Jacob listened to his conscience and stopped a Gaye song. (Marvin Gaye, that is.) [ Clip of Jacob: “If I’m in the bottom three, it will be because America won’t be ready to look at themselves in the mirror.” ] [ Jim has a mirror at his desk. ] But Jacob, I am looking in the mirror. And my reflection’s telling me that your performance was terrible. But wait, can we go back to Pia and discuss that outfit? [ Clip of Michael Kors from old-school “Project Runway” saying, “The crotch on those pants is insane!!” ] Thank you, Michael Kors. On the results show it was headache [ shot of Russell Brand ], nightmare [ shot of Gwen Stefani giving fashion advice ], nausea [ shot of Harry Levin and his TMZ crew ], and then a sleazy rocker came back to relive his glory days when really everyone just wanted him to button up his shirt. [ Shots of Iggy Pop performing, but Jim cuts off the editor. ] Oh, no, no, no. I liked Iggy Pop. I was talking about Constantine. [ Clip of Constantine Maroulis: “Am i gonna get judged here?” ] Oh, you’re getting judged. And results!! Goodbye, Stefan-OH WAIT! Pia’s going home?! Stop the clock! [ Clip of a teary J.Lo: “I have no idea what just happened here. ] I’ll tell you what just happened here. You and your pals told Pia that she was perfect every week, when in actuality, she had the personality of wallpaper. But if you had done your job and given her notes to improve her stage presence three weeks ago, chances are Pia would have worked on that. She does, after all, strike me as a perfectionist. Maybe then, America would have fallen in love with her as much as they were in love with her voice. Steven, do you have anything to say for yourself? [ Clip of Steven Tyler: “A mistake is a mistake, but a lack of passion is unforgiveable.” ] This coming from the man who pretended to be asleep Wednesday night? Oh, hold my earrings. Randy Jackson, final thoughts? [ Clip of Randy: “I’m mad, and I don’t get upset!” ] Oh, you never get angry, do you? Well, you also don’t pay attention. Because you, of all people, should know that the cray-crays who vote a zillion times for their favorite contestant are mostly girls. And who have the girls been voting for, especially in the last three seasons? Boys! If only there was a way for you to protect the female talent, and saved that stupid judges’ save for someone with, you know, a vagina! Just sayin’! Hashtag it! And another thing, Randy Jackson. If you’re going to sit there and tell everybody that they’re amazing and beautiful and perfect and awesome, you have no right to act shocked or angry when the bottom three is announced. Don’t think I didn’t notice when you got all huffy once Haley was safe, even though the night before you said the old brilliant Haley was “back-ack-ack-ack-ack.” It is you three who need to look in a mirror. Boom fiyah! OK, you can start the clock again. [ The clock continues. ] Does anybody know when “The Voice” premieres? [ Ding! ] Get your “Idol” fix on MTV News’ “American Idol” page , where you’ll find all the latest news, interviews and opinions. La La Anthony Regrets TLC Hairdo On ‘When I Was 17’

‘Looking back, I’m like, ‘It looked great on her … not so much on me,’ ‘ she laughs. By Alex Mohr La La Anthony on “When I Was 17” Photo: MTV News La La Anthony makes a return to her MTV roots — this time, however, she’s the one answering questions, not asking them. On this week’s episode of “When I Was 17” “When I was 17,” airing Saturday at 11 a.m. on MTV, La La recalls a hairstyle that now has her asking: “What was I thinking?” The former MTV VJ is often seen cheering on new hubby and New York Knicks superstar Carmelo Anthony sporting her long, enviable locks courtside, but she remembers a time when her hair wasn’t always at the top of its game. The style she’s referring to was inspired by T-Boz of TLC fame. “It was like the mushroom cut with two strands of hair hanging here on the sides,” she dishes on the all-female episode, also featuring high school confessions from “Harry’s Law” actress Brittany Snow and “Pretty Little Liars” star Ashley Benson . While TLC were urging music fans not to chase waterfalls, it seems that girls all over were chasing their sense of style. La La was not alone in emulating T-Boz’s ‘do; she remembers walking into her hairdresser, and she knew instantly the style that she was asking for. “That was one of the most popular haircuts at the time,” Anthony laughed. “I thought I was the coolest thing walking.” The stylish star revealed high school photos of her and the hairstyle, and she admits that her opinion about the style has drastically changed. “Now, looking back, I’m like, ‘It looked great on her … not so much on me.’ ” “When I Was 17” — this week featuring La La Anthony, Brittany Snow and Ashley Benson — airs on Saturday at 11 a.m. ET/PT on MTV. The Wait Is Over: Melo’s Move To NYC Is Official

The “Melo-Drama” may not have been as dramatic as Bron’s decision, but still: we’re all glad it’s over. And while the Knicks’ acquisition of Carmelo Anthony may not be a surprise, the lengths they went to to get him are pretty impressive… or rather desperate, depending on how you look at it. James Dolan pulled the trigger Monday night on a blockbuster deal for Anthony, the Brooklyn-born All-Star forward and former Syracuse standout, who for months was angling for an opportunity to join forces with Amar’e Stoudemire in New York. It’s all part of the Knicks’ ambitious plan to eventually add either Chris Paul or Deron Williams next year and give the club its own Big Three to compete against Miami and Boston. The price for Anthony was steep, as the Knicks traded Danilo Gallinari, Raymond Felton, Wilson Chandler and rookie center Timofey Mozgov to the Denver Nuggets. They also gave Denver $3 million in cash plus a 2014 first-round pick and two second-round picks they had acquired from Golden State in last summer’s sign-and-trade with David Lee. The Knicks get Anthony, Chauncey Billups, Shelden Williams, Renaldo Balkman and Anthony Carter. In a separate deal, the Knicks traded Anthony Randolph and Eddy Curry to the Minnesota T-Wolves, who in turn will reportedly send Corey Brewer to the Knicks. As a condition of the deal, Anthony will get a 3-year, $65 million extension. Congrats New York Knicks fans! You probably still have no hope of seeing a championship any time soon. Source

UPDATE: Carmelo Anthony Is One Step Closer To Becoming A New York Knick!

Looks like Melo may just get his wish, and Amare Stoudemire’s wish too… With the Nets having yet to get Carmelo Anthony’s approval to complete a trade with the Nuggets, the Knicks jumped back in the hunt for Anthony yesterday with a strong counter-offer that would cost them three key players, according to multiple sources, while finally getting Denver’s full attention. With the belief Anthony will approve a Nets’ deal as only a last resort, the Knicks and Nuggets engaged in extensive talks yesterday and have bridged a considerable gap, with Knicks owner James Dolan leading the push behind the scenes as the Hollywood suspense lingered into the night. The Nuggets could accept the package today or tomorrow, according to a Knicks official… …”Jim Dolan definitely wants Carmelo Anthony in New York,” said Amar’e Stoudemire, who doubted Anthony wants to be a Net. The Knicks have offered Raymond Felton, Danilo Gallinari, Wilson Chandler and Eddy Curry’s expiring contract for Anthony, Chauncey Billups and possibly Anthony Carter. Yahoo! Sports first reported the deal’s main ingredients. It’s a proposal the Nuggets are seriously weighing, partly because of Anthony’s wariness on approving a Nets deal, a Knicks source said. A Knicks source said there are “other elements involved” in why they made such a strong offer. It stems from the belief that if they nail Anthony now, point guard Chris Paul — who, like Anthony, is represented by CAA — will follow when he’s a 2012 free agent and Billups’ contract expires. Stoudemire said he believes Anthony will turn down the Nets. “I’d be very surprised,” Stoudemire said. “It’s hard for me to picture him in a Nets jersey. It’s a tough situation for him.” “We played in New Jersey, it was like a home game for us, which was great. Most players would want to play with the Knicks before New Jersey.” Anthony said he would like to meet with Nets owner Mikhail Prokhorov in addition to Dolan, but that may not take place if Denver accepts the Knicks’ pitch. “I would love to sit down with Mr. Prokhorov, Mr. Dolan,” Anthony said. “I would love to sit down, look them in the eye and see what the future holds. I wan to see if Dolan is really interested in me coming to New York and see if Prokhorov is interested in me coming to Jersey.” Stoudemire wants to see Anthony in a Knicks uniform. Good luck Melo!
