NBC’s Andrea Mitchell Relays Iranian State Spin on Today

NBC’s Andrea Mitchell reporting live from Tehran on Tuesday’s Today show, on the American hikers held hostage in Iran, relayed Iranian government spin, that the Ground Zero mosque protest and controversial Koran “desecrations” have “added to the tension here, the anti-American spirit.” Spurred by a question from substitute anchor Carl Quintanilla about the protests in New York city, Mitchell actually held up one of the state-owned newspapers and relayed that “if the government needed any excuse to drum up more anti-American fever,” they have it, as she noted “all the headlines” in Iran are about the “desecration” and “burning” threats of the Koran. The following segment was aired on the September 14 Today show: CARL QUINTANILLA: But we begin this morning, in Iran, where tense negotiations are underway to free one of the three American hikers detained there for more than a year. NBC’s chief foreign affairs correspondent Andrea Mitchell is in Tehran. Andrea, good morning. ANDREA MITCHELL: Good morning, Carl. As you say it’s been tense, feverish negotiations led by Swiss diplomats here representing the United States and an Iranian lawyer retained by the Shourd family, trying to win her release, trying to get prosecutors to relent on their demand for that bail, $500,000. And it’s been a roller coaster, as you point out. There were plans to release her, then those were retracted. So they’re waiting to see, but there are some signals today that she could be released at any time. And they are, of course, hoping for that to happen. Carl? QUINTANILLA: Andrea the discussions about this, this potential release, the discussions in this country about the would be mosque near Ground Zero, what has all of that done to the political climate there, where you are? MITCHELL: Well it has really added to the tension here, the anti-American spirit. And, in fact, if the government needed any excuse to try drum to up more anti-American fever, you can see the state owned newspapers today, all the headlines are about the desecration threat, the burning threat and also what happened in Washington last weekend, on 9/11, when some pages were torn out of Koran, out of the holy book. That has inflamed the anger here and they are planning big protests today. Carl? QUINTANILLA: NBC’s Andrea Mitchell in Tehran. Andrea, thank you for that.

Geist: Showing Plane Flying Into WTC ‘Always In Bad Taste’

More in sorrow than in anger, I’m about to record a personal blogging first: airing a gripe about Willie Geist.  When writing of the Morning Joe sidekick, my habit is to append adjectives such as “affable.”   Willie is indeed a likable guy, patently comfortable in his own skin.  And while I don’t suspect him of being a closet conservative, neither is he anything of a raging liberal, typically striking a regular-guy’s middle ground on most issues. All of which makes his comment of today that much more surprising—and regrettable.  Geist was commenting on an ad by an anti-Ground Zero mosque group to be displayed on NYC buses, which shows a plane flying into one of the WTC towers.  Although defending the anti-mosque group’s rights, Willie opined that it’s “always in bad taste to show the plane flying into the building.” Really? The ad was illuminating for another, chilling, reason . . . Have a look at the screencap below showing the mosque’s proposed design [note that the anti-mosque group wasn’t misrepresenting the design.  See mosque architect’s rendering here ].  Sure looks a lot like the WTC towers themselves, doesn’t it?  Hard to imagine that’s a coincidence. A certain implicit triumphalism involved? Note: Introducing the segment, Chris Jansing [subbing for Mika] said that “New York’s transportation agency has approved a controversial advertisement protesting a planned mosque near Ground Zero.”  True. But what Chris [who generally seems to be playing things straight] didn’t say is that the MTA only approved the ad after the group sued the agency, which had demanded various changes to the ad, including the removal of the plane.

Drake Was ‘Fearless’ In Making ‘Find Your Love’ Video, Director Says

‘It’s kind of like the anti-love love story,’ Anthony Mandler says. By Jayson Rodriguez Drake Photo: Young Money Entertainment As both a newcomer and budding superstar, Drake draws a high level of scrutiny toward himself with each new song or video he releases. That trend continued Tuesday (May 11) with the premiere of his latest clip, “Find Your Love,” directed by Anthony Mandler. “It’s unbelievable the amount of attention that he garners,” Mandler told MTV News. “Since the video dropped, I think I’ve received 200 e-mails, Facebook questions, tweets. There’s a fascination with him and there’s certainly been a void in music that he’s come to fill.” According to Mandler, Drake’s allure lies in his ability to fit in across various groups. That idea was at the heart of the two clips he’s helmed for Drake, “Over” and “Find Your Love.” For their collaboration, he explained, the two played against the convention of who Drake may or may not be. “I think part of that is the kind of way he works across genres, the way he works across tonalities: is he black, is he white, he’s aligned with Wayne and the streets, but he’s a nice guy from Toronto,” Mandler said. “And that really was the theme with ‘Over.’ Especially with the album and the dualities in the music to come, in one song he rhymes and another song he sings, the artists he working with — he’s very hard to pin down. Part of the objective of making this video was to do that same twist again, to give you something unexpected, not only tonality with the song but with the video thematically. It’s kind of like the anti-love love story.” In the video, Drake is advised to get out of dodge when he tries to woo the love interest of a local gang lord. He ignores the words of the elder Jamaican sage and instead ventures into the ghettos of “Gully Side” to see his leading lady once more. As Drake and the man speak, words run across the screen warning of the perils of unknowingly taking things too far. “It’s really about crossing lines, what was said in the first scene,” Mandler said about Drake’s chase for love. “It’s about really understanding what’s right and what’s wrong and it’s really easy to lose that when you’re the center of attention.” The director said the idea of “Find Your Love” was to serve as a follow-up to “Over,” which he felt helped to clear the slate of everything pre- Thank Me Later, Drake’s forthcoming debut album. The idea behind “Find You Love” was to feature visuals to begin a new story in the young rapper’s life. Mandler applauded Drake’s efforts in making the clip happen. “He did it fearlessly,” Mandler beamed. “He did it without any sign of hesitation. That was incredible. He wanted to do something that went further with the song, that took the essence of the song but communicated it with imagery that made people think, rather than go up the middle and make an obvious R&B video. That’s completely not who Drake is.” What do you think the story behind Drake’s video? Let us know in the comments! Related Videos Storyllne Videos: Drake, Lady Gaga, M.I.A

America’s Goofiest College Race War [Higher Learning]

Are college kids in San Diego particularly racist, or just, perhaps, particularly dumb? Monday, a ” KKK-style hood ” was found “atop a Dr. Seuss statue” on campus, naturally. Allow us to briefly recap sunny UCSD’s recent reign of racial hullabaloo: On Feb. 15, some idiot frat boys hold a “Compton Cook-Out.” But the thing is these guys were actually white and not from Compton, you see! It was all just a run-of-the-mill, racist joke. It was funny when they ate watermelon there! Also UCSD kids were mad because there is a “satiric” frat boy idiot newspaper there called The Koala , which makes funny cutting-edge jokes about black people, for white people. The Koala apparently did not contribute to the atmosphere of healing in the wake of the “Compton Cook-Out,” if you know what we mean. In response, the UCSD administration planned a “teach-in” about racism. “LAME SAUCE,” was the opinion of our own UCSD correspondent and her non-frat-boy allies. So then, according to our embedded correspondent, the anti-racist UCSD forces “staged a MASSIVE walk-out of the teach in: something like 1000 students and faculty marched right the fuck on out of the administration-sponsored event and held a giant protest and alternative teach-in.” Is the anti-racism teach-in the real enemy here? We’ll leave that to current college students to decide. Then last week, good lord, somebody put a noose in the UCSD. Are there any remaining nooses in America not located on college campuses, at this point? The noose student anonymously apologized, saying it was all a big mistake. Here is our favorite part of that explanation : “I found a small piece of rope on the ground earlier in the day…. My friend then took the rope and tied it into a noose. I innocently marveled at his ability to tie a noose.” Now somebody has put a Klan hood on a Dr. Seuss statue. Maybe it was the Compton Cook-Out guys? Time for another teach-in! And another counterprotest of that sellout teach-in! Repeat, until student loans come due. [Pics: Flickr , Stop Racism at UCSD ]
