Rupert Wyatt doesn’t share Franco’s concern that ‘Rise of the Planet of the Apes’ will suffer because of his involvement. By Eric Ditzian Freida Pinto and James Franco in “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” Photo: Twentieth Century Fox Film James Franco is worried. Is the what’s-that-dude’s-deal backlash going to follow him into the multiplex? There’s the Oscar debacle and the dozen or so degrees he’s pursuing and the “Three’s Company” performance-art installation and any number of other accomplishments and interests that get on some people’s nerves, and Franco is fearful his newest movie, “Rise of the Planet of the Apes,” is going to suffer because of it all. “Critics will be out to kill this movie and blame me for it just because they are out to kill me,” he said in a July Playboy interview. “Last year people were pretty nice. This is the year when people are going to have fun going after me.” One person who isn’t concerned is “Apes” director Rupert Wyatt. “I think people are going to see this film, hopefully, for the film,” the British filmmaker told MTV News at San Diego Comic-Con . “Those that will go see this film for James Franco will still see the film for James Franco. I totally understand where he’s coming from. Obviously he took a bit of a knock with the Oscars, but at the end of the day, he’s an actor and that’s his job.” Likely helping matters, from critical reviews to box-office pop, is that “Apes” is a first-rate piece of popcorn entertainment. And, honestly, we’re kind of surprised to say that. But after checking out an early screening, we can say the story is engrossing, the CG apes look amazing, and Andy Serkis, as the lead ape, delivers one heck of an emotional performance. Seriously! The humans, even Franco himself, take a backseat to Serkis’ motion-captured performance as Caesar, the super-smart simian who leads his fellow creatures in their San Francisco-trashing uprising. For his part, Serkis credits his co-star with helping create a believable relationship between Caesar and Franco’s kindhearted but misguided scientist. “It was amazing working with him,” Serkis told us. “It really is a testament if they can truly believe the person opposite them — who is wearing a performance-capture suit with a head-mounted camera — actually go full-on and have a relationship with them. It’s all about believability. All credit to him that he bought into the whole process.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Rise of the Planet of the Apes.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . James Franco’s ambitious scientist appears to have doomed mankind. By Terri Schwartz James Franco in “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” Photo: 20th Century Fox There’s still another four months until the apes take over humanity, but the first real glimpse at “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” provides a chilling look at the suspenseful flick to come. This teaser of the prequel to the “Planet of the Apes” films certainly makes us feel like our days are numbered, thanks to James Franco and his team of scientists. Here’s a look at the trailer’s five key moments as we count down the days until August 5. Caesar Is Chosen Franco plays central character Will Rodman, who thinks he has found the cure to Alzheimer’s and is looking to test it on one of his lab’s many apes. He ends up settling on Caesar, an ape who shows the ability for functional thought more than the others he has at his disposal. But things don’t go according to plan. Watch Out, Tom Felton Caesar’s mental processes start developing quickly, and soon he escapes after he learns to build a tool to unlock his cage. With these advanced apes set loose on the world, no one is safe, especially not “Harry Potter” star Tom Felton! In our first and only glimpse of him in the trailer, Felton stands outside as an ape sneaks by on the roof behind him. Freida Pinto and James Franco Need to Boost Security An ape (maybe Caesar) stands over the bed doctor power couple Franco and Pinto Pinto are sleeping in. They should probably padlock their doors, because when simian creatures taking over the world, it’s doubtful that they feel charitable toward the people who were experimenting on them. The Apes Are Loose! As we teased earlier, the main focus on the trailer for “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” is the sense of foreboding as the mutated apes take over Earth. Our favorite of these shots shows David Oyelowo standing in an office building with hundreds of apes looking down from the upper floors. They might not be humans, as the trailer warns, but they sure do look threatening. Visual Effects On Display The final shot in this first trailer is the same as the one in Wednesday’s teaser , and for good reason. The apes look fantastic, thanks in large part to “Avatar” special-effects company Weta Digital. Caesar looks more realistic than any CGI simian we have seen in the past, and that’s the clincher for making “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” rise above its series predecessors. Hey, film fans! Are you ready for the brand-new movie from “WETA Digital, the visual effects company for Avatar“? Now that they’ve finally decided on a title , 20th Century Fox has kicked the marketing machine for Rise of the Planet of the Apes into high gear, first with a whopping four-second look at the apes, then with a more in-depth look at the special effects entailed in bringing a bunch of rampaging monkeys to life. Now, here’s the full trailer, which has a surprisingly tense and low-key feel to it… well, until that ape attacks the helicopter.
‘Rise of the Apes,’ starring James Franco, sees highly intelligent apes battling humans for power. By Mawuse Ziegbe Freida Pinto Photo: Kevork Djansezian/ Getty Images Freida Pinto has signed on for “Rise of the Apes,” the upcoming “Planet of the Apes” prequel, along with actor John Lithgow. According to Entertainment Weekly, the “Slumdog Millionaire” actress will play Caroline, a primatologist. The “3rd Rock From the Sun” star is slated to portray the father of James Franco, who leads the cast as an ambitious young scientist. The news comes after buzz that Pinto and Oscar-nominated actor Don Cheadle had been offered roles . At press time, Cheadle’s involvement in the movie had not been confirmed. “Rise of the Apes” is set in present-day San Francisco, and the plot hinges on the consequences of genetic engineering experiments that result in highly intelligent apes jockeying for power with their human counterparts. Franco’s character assumes a significant role in the subsequent war between man and brainy ape. Pinto is best known for her role as a young woman navigating a life of extreme poverty in India’s slums in the runaway 2008 hit “Slumdog Millionaire.” Earlier this year it was announced that Pinto will also flex her acting chops in the upcoming Greek mythology epic “War of the Gods” opposite “The Tudors” actor Henry Cavill. Lithgow is a Hollywood vet who has appeared onscreen in the ’80s flick “Harry and the Hendersons” and the animated franchise “Shrek.” Lithgow snagged a Golden Globe earlier this year for his role as a serial killer on the hit Showtime series “Dexter.” Director Rupert Wyatt is set to helm the movie. “Rise of the Apes” is expected to start production on July 5 and is scheduled to hit theaters on June 24, 2011.
