Justin Bieber Runs Into Esperanza Spalding Backstage At The Grammys

Plus: Nicki Minaj gets grabby with Snooki, Arcade Fire give high-fives and more from behind the scenes. By James Montgomery Esperanza Spalding and Justin Bieber Photo: MTV News LOS ANGELES — There was nothing left to do after his band shocked pretty much everyone by taking home Album of the Year for The Suburbs (and breaking into an elated performance of “Ready to Start” that closed the show), so Arcade Fire frontman Win Butler was just handing out high-fives. Backstage at the 53rd annual Grammy Awards , on the way to the press room to share his feelings about winning the night’s top prize, Butler was doling out the high-fives to startled members of the media, a permanent smile stretched across his face. Equally as jovial — even though he lost Best New Artist to Esperanza Spalding — was Justin Bieber, who, after finishing an interview with MTV News , literally walked into Spalding backstage. But rather than be bitter, Bieber shook hands with the newly crowned Grammy winner, congratulating her on her victory. It was a long day of those kinds of once-in-a-lifetime interactions at the Grammys, as the biggest stars in music packed into the Staples Center to honor their own. Jamie Foxx and Jennifer Hudson embraced and laughed after the stirring tribute to Aretha Franklin that opened the show. Mumford & Sons huddled with their brass band minutes before sharing the stage with Bob Dylan, and Nicki Minaj was introduced to one of her “heroes,” Cyndi Lauper. Outside, on the Grammy red carpet, well, it was all about special MTV News correspondent (and “Jersey Shore” star) Snooki , who flirted with Bruno Mars, told Tyrese he was “hot” and informed R&B legend Ronald Isley matter-of-factly that he has “nice teeth.” Snooki told Hudson and Jennifer Lopez that they both looked fantastic and, when Lady Gaga arrived on the carpet inside her egg , not only did the Snookster shout that she “loved” Gaga, but LG returned the love, waving to her from inside the egg. “I’ve seriously got chills!” Snooki enthused. Elsewhere, Snooki let Minaj grab a handful of both her breasts, she pouted when Rihanna didn’t walk the carpet, and, when Lil Wayne blew by, huge cigar in his mouth, she tried to stop him by shouting his name. He didn’t hear her, and Snook was upset. “That sucks,” she sighed. “I love him.” It was, to be honest, probably the only low point of the entire day. That’s how these things tend to go, especially when there are so many stars in such a small place. High-fives all around. Arcade Fire Throw An Anti-Grammy Party At Secret Show

The Grammy-nominated indie rockers announced details of the Los Angeles theater show just 12 hours before taking the stage. By James Montgomery Arcade Fire’s Win Butler Photo: Getty Images LOS ANGELES — It wasn’t the Grammys, and it wasn’t supposed to be. On Friday night, far away from the machinations of the music industry and the glad-handling of golden gramophones, in a grand old theater that now doubles as the Ukrainian Culture Center of Greater Los Angeles, Arcade Fire — the indie band who, at Sunday’s 53rd Grammy Awards , will face off against the likes of Eminem and Lady Gaga for Album of the Year — threw what will probably go down as the week’s greatest un-official, anti-Grammy pre-party: a sweaty, exuberant, all-ages secret show that felt about a million miles removed from the award-show hysteria that has descended on much of the city. Only 500 tickets were sold, in a first-come, first-serve basis at three locations (a pair of record stores and the venerable El Rey Theatre) on Friday afternoon. There was no red carpet outside or a VIP area inside, just the still-elaborate eaves of an 86-year-old building now crumbling away on a decidedly gritty stretch of Melrose Avenue. The band gave away “free drinks and cotton candy” before the show even began. It was, in short, an anti-industry affair in all conceivable ways, and Arcade Fire savored every second of it. As the strains of Julie Andrews’ “Lusty Month of May” crackled over the speakers, the Canadian band’s members took to the tiny stage, grinned and then, appropriately enough, blasted headlong into “Month of May,” from their Grammy-nominated The Suburbs, with frontman Win Butler cocking his head and jutting his guitar out into the crowd — who, being so close, gladly reached out and grabbed it. Given that they were playing at full strength — eight in all, sawing and hammering away on a menagerie of violins and keyboards and drums and guitars — and that, for much of the past decade, they’ve been tailoring their sonics to massive festival crowds and cavernous indoor spaces, the sound they produced in this little theater was enormous; it washed over the audience, all the way to the back of the building, and then up to the arched ceilings. And that only added to the euphoria. Because there truly is something to be said about seeing a band this big in a venue this small. Already-massive songs like “Rebellion (Lies)” and “Neighborhood #2 (Laika)” became even larger, the bass rumbled and the strings stabbed, the chanted vocals of R

2011 Grammy Winners Revealed — Possibly

Bigger Than the Sound likes Eminem, Florence and the Machine, others to take home Grammys. By James Montgomery Eminem Photo: John Shearer/ WireImage This Sunday, the titans of the music industry will convene on the Staples Center in Los Angeles for the 53rd annual Grammy Awards , the annual celebration of back-slapping, glad-handling and, of course, melisma . And while most of you are probably just tuning in for Recording Academy President Neil Portnow’s annual keynote address, I’ll be watching this year’s Grammys largely for the same reason I’ve watched them every year: to see if my predictions come true. See, for just about as long as I’ve had this column, I’ve been making Grammy picks . It’s an annual tradition, mostly because I love the Grammys — just about as much as I love gambling. And with a field of nominees that includes everyone from Eminem to Pinetop Perkins — not to mention a few of my favorite artists (Yay Robyn! Yay Arcade Fire!) — this year’s Grammys are shaping up to be the wildest in recent history. And when you couple that fact with my insatiable, downright destructive desire to wager, well, let’s just say this column practically wrote itself. Of course, since there are something, like, 4,236 Grammy categories (approximately), I’m once again forced to limit my picks to the so-called Big Four: Album, Record and Song of the Year, plus Best New Artist (but just in case you’re wondering, Amy Hanaiali’i and the Slack Key Masters of Hawaii are my lead-pipe lock in the “Best Hawaiian Music Album” category). So here, for your betting pleasure — and my own personal demons — are my picks for the 53rd Grammys: Album of the Year

Are The Arcade Fire Prepping A New Album?

Rep for the band calls a listing in the U.K.’s Music Week ‘just a rumor.’ By James Montgomery Arcade Fire’s Win Butler Photo: Scott Legato/ FilmMagic In the current issue of U.K. trade mag Music Week, between listings for All Time Low’s Dirty Work album and Asa’s Beautiful Imperfection, there exists a line that reads, simply: “Arcade Fire ‘TBC.’ ” It’s not exactly clear what it’s referring to, but that hardly matters to the band’s fans. Given that it’s published alongside other upcoming albums, they’ve taken it to mean just one thing: Sometime this year, the Arcade Fire are putting out an album. But will it be an entirely new album? A live disc? A collection of outtakes from their Grammy-nominated, chart-topping The Suburbs ? Well, as it turns out, none of that may even matter. Because according to a rep for the band, at the moment, all that talk is speculative, at best. “[It’s] just a rumor,” the spokesperson wrote in an e-mail to MTV News. “Nothing [is] confirmed yet.” A rep for Music Week could not be reached for comment about the listing. So while there’s nothing to report about a new album (at least not yet), Arcade Fire fanatics aren’t exactly hurting for headlines these days. Earlier this week, the band were announced as headliners at both the upcoming Coachella and New Orleans Jazz & Heritage festivals, and they’re also on tap to perform at the 53rd annual Grammy Awards on February 13, alongside Eminem, Lady Gaga and Justin Bieber. They’ll also head into the show up for three awards, including Album of the Year. Are you hoping the Arcade Fire already have a new album on the way? Let us know in the comments! Is Rock Dead? Not If Vampire Weekend, Arcade Fire, More Can Help It

Rock bands had a hard time breaking through in 2010, but our critics say new indie groups might be nirvana for the genre. By Gil Kaufman Vampire Weekend’s Ezra Koenig Photo: Karl Walter/Getty Images There was a time not long ago when good-old fashioned meat-and-potatoes rockers like Nickelback , Hinder and Disturbed frequently landed albums in the top 10 and reeled off solid chart singles. Then came a new generation of bands like MGMT , Vampire Weekend and Arcade Fire who were heralded as the saviors of a limping-along genre that had been overtaken by pop cuties like Katy Perry, Justin Bieber and Lady Gaga. “In 2010, we just didn’t see the people like the MGMTs, who potentially could have taken over the top from being a great niche artist to being a pop sensation [take off],” said Noah Callahan-Bever, editor-in-chief of Complex magazine, addressing the psychedelic duo’s confounding, sometimes confusing second album, Congratulations. By Jayson Rodriguez Katy Perry in “California Gurls” Photo: Capitol Hip-hop ranked high on Amazon’s best-selling singles list for 2010, with Eminem and Nelly notching top spots, while country music reigned supreme on the best-selling albums list as Taylor Swift and Lady Antebellum took the top two positions. Katy Perry’s “California Gurls” featuring Snoop Dogg took the top spot on the singles list. Rihanna appears on that list twice, as a collaborator on Em’s “Love the Way You Lie,” which landed at #2 behind Perry, and with “Only Girl (In the World),” which came in at #7. Bruno Mars (“Just the Way You Are”), Nelly (“Just a Dream”) and Enrique Iglesias (“I Like It,” featuring Pitbull) round out the top 5 singles list. The e-commerce retailer released its year-end list of the top 20 best-selling music albums and singles for the sixth consecutive year. Grammy contenders Taylor Swift ( Speak Now ) and Lady Antebellum ( Need You Now ) were the top two sellers on the albums list. Arcade Fire ( The Suburbs ), Susan Boyle ( The Gift ) and Eminem ( Recovery ) complete the top five.
