Bafana Beat Guatemala 5-0 in friendly match

It was a night of records in Polokwane on Monday as Bafana Bafana skipper Aaron Mokoena celebrated winning his 100th international cap by leading his side to a record 5-0 win over Guatemala in a World Cup warm-up. The result will be a huge confidence boost for the team as goals from Katlego Mphela (two penalties), Reneilwe Letsholonyane, Surprise Moriri and Bernard Parker stunned the Central Americans. Bafana were awarded a terrible penalty decision by referee Ibrahim Chaibou from Niger, who adjudged Siphiwe Tshabalala’s long-range effort to have struck Guatemalan defender Gustavo Cabrera on the arm. Whether it did or not is up for debate, but what’s not is that the incident happened a yard outside the area, and at the very most should have been a free kick. Mphela did not waste the gift and notched his 13th goal in Bafana colours, snatching the ball out of the hands of Teko Modise and converting from the spot. Mphela and Gonzalo Romero traded ambitious long-range free kicks, before Letsholonyane scored his maiden international goal. Brilliant work from Lucas Thwala down the left saw him reach the byline and his chip into the box fell perfectly for Letsholonyane , who volleyed into an empty net with visiting goalkeeper David Guerra out of position. Tshabalala shot wide from just outside the area, while Mphela dallied on a shot and saw his effort deflected wide. If he had pulled the trigger quicker, he might have scored. Bafana did extend their lead three minutes into the second half when substitute Moriri picked up the loose ball just outside the six-yard box from Mphela’s driving run and cross and tapped home with the Guatemalan defence at sixes and sevens. The referee decided to level the score on a the poor penalty award count when he awarded the visitors a soft spot-kick after adjudging Thwala to have hand-balled, when the ball looked to have struck his chest. But Moeneeb Josephs saved Guillermo Ramirez’s poor effort and the score remained 3-0 to the home side. Steven Pienaar should have got a spot-kick minutes later when he was clattered in the area, but strangely this time the referee said no, but shortly afterwards he again pinned Cabrera for hand-ball in the box from Kagisho Dikgacoi’s shot. This award looked correct and Mphela coolly slotted home from the spot and Bafana matched their best-ever result in international football. Pienaar’s brilliant free-kick from 35-yards with 20 minutes left slammed against the post with Guatemalan substitute goalkeeper David Guerra beaten, denying him a spectacular goal. But that spectacular goal came from Parker , who picked up the ball on the sideline, beat two defenders and hot a shot from 25-yards across the goalkeeper and into the top corner. Elin Woods to Leave Tiger, But Stay in Florida?

Tiger Woods’ wife Elin is reportedly seeking full custody of the couple’s two children, but may be leaning toward remaining in South Florida, according to sources. Elin and the kids are currently in China visiting her brother and she’s rumored to be mulling a return to her native Sweden – permanently. But perhaps no longer. As divorce talks have progressed, Elin Woods has indicated a desire to stay in Florida, albeit in the southern part of the state, a few hours away from Orlando. Elin may be seeking up to $750 million in a divorce, and wants full custody of the children, according to a source close to the situation, causing serious tension. Her desire to move to Sweden, while understandable, could create big problems with Tiger as he wants to see his children often. Thus the South Florida idea. Will Elin Woods stay in Florida to speed the divorce along? “She has good friends in South Florida,” one source said of Elin recently. “She has spent time with them this year and she’s interested in moving to the area.” “It could be the perfect solution. If she has any chance on Tiger not fighting her on seeking full custody , then he’s going to want to see his kids regularly.” If Elin stays in the area, i.e. a few hours away by car and even less by plane, “that would be much easier and could avoid big problems with the divorce.” She’s been creating a life without Tiger, traveling regularly and rarely interacting with him – the two are not on speaking terms despite living a mile apart. When and if the divorce is put on paper, expect it to be done fast, discreetly and with a big payout, much like Tiger used to treat his bevy of mistresses. I’m totally on …

Gulf Oil Spill Becoming Obama’s Katrina

(BARATARIA BAY, LA.) There's failure and frustration on the Gulf Coast.Oil companies seek solutions to stop the massive underwater oil gusher, but the contamination is spreading. White, sandy beaches are coated with thick, gooey oil, and the White House is taking more and more of the heat. Could the oil spill in the Gulf become for President Barack Obama what Hurricane Katrina became for President George W. Bush? Some in the area think so: “Just like Bush was remembered for Katrina, he's going to be remembered for this, for the oil spill,” said resident Julia Rosado. “It's been over a month. By now somebody should have stepped in to clean it up so that all these fish and wildlife don't die from it,” said resident Raquel Manning. “It's like Bush's Katrina, sure. I think it's going to have a real big lasting effect on us all,” said Merrick resident Steve Vargas. Oil now stains at least 53 miles of coastal Louisiana and more wildlife is dying, so President Obama knows he has a political crisis in the making. On Monday, he sent Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano to the area – her fourth visit – to highlight all the administration is doing. Officials made it clear Monday that British Petroleum (BP) is the responsible party and will be held accountable. But increasingly, members of the President's own party want him to do more than rely on BP. “If the defense department or NASA or CIA have technology that can help, the should use them,” said Rep. Edward Markey (D-Mass.). The response to the oil spill and the damage has environmentalists worried about BP's response and worried about the government's response. “I think the problem this administration has had is that it was taken completely by surprise by this tragedy,” said Elgie Holstein of the Environmental Defense Fund. “Every day we seem to have a new solution and every day we seem to have more disappointment.” Some blame the cozy relationship between government regulators and the oil industry they are supposed to police, saying new controls on the oil industry are needed. http://wcbstv.com/politics/gulf.oil.spill.2.1712536.html added by: JohnA

Crystal Bowersox’s Hometown Fans Say Her ‘Idol’ Run Gives Them Hope

Teens and other followers in Ohio are inspired by Bowersox’s success. By Gil Kaufman Crystal Bowersox Photo: FOX TOLEDO, Ohio — Like its neighbor to the north, Detroit, Toledo has been hit hard by the Great Recession and the shrinking American auto industry. Downtown is littered with the hulks of giant factories that used to help supply parts and materials to the Motor City’s car industry, but which now sit fenced off, their broken windows and weed-choked parking lots a testament to better times in this industrial city. But despite areas with some of the highest double-digit unemployment rates in the state, these days there are plenty of reason for hope thanks to the unlikely championship run of the area’s new favorite daughter, “American Idol” top three contestant Crystal Bowersox. “She came from a small town, so it shows anybody can do anything,” said Derek Wood, 14, who gathered with more than 200 others to watch the elimination show in the Baptist church across the street from Bowersox’s childhood home two weeks ago. “I think it gives [kids around here] the chance to open up their dreams and try other things … think they can actually do it. I think she’s going to win.” That kind of optimism can be found all over the Toledo area, from the spanking-new signs proclaiming tiny Elliston, Ohio (population 75), the hometown of Bowersox, to the dozens of store windows painted with messages of encouragement for MamaSox in neighboring Oak Harbor, put up by the cheerleaders from the singer’s old middle school. After Bowersox made it through to the top four that night, Oak Harbor native Jaime Sellback, 20, was relieved and said the success has helped create a sense of community in the area. “I think it’s brought everyone together, really, I mean, to have an ‘Idol’ from our town?” she said after attending her first viewing party at the church. “It’s just crazy to think that someone’s going to hopefully win it — well, she will win it — and be famous … just from a small town, and she’s done so good.” Of course she’s a bit biased, but Bowersox’s grandmother, Alice Bowersox, is not only proud of her granddaughter’s success, but glad the rest of the world finally gets to see what she’s known all along. “We knew she was going somewhere,” said Alice Bowersox. “We really knew she had a lot of talent. And now the rest of the world is finding it out.” When it’s suggested that her granddaughter’s rise from a modest rural Ohio background to the biggest stage in television is a quintessential American success story, Alice blanches a bit, showing some of that signature Bowersox grit that Crystal has displayed when sparring with the judges on the show. “We always knew that she was going to go far,” she said modestly. “And coming from a small town doesn’t really have a whole lot to do with it. It was her drive and she really worked hard for this. That one night [on ‘Idol’] when she talked about singing in the subway in Chicago, she really did that. She’d sing anywhere.” The previous night, Dr. Jeff Bunkers, who was Bowersox’s orthodontist when she was a teenager, sat up close to the TVs at the Village Idiot in Maumee, Ohio — where Bowersox had a standing weekly engagement up until she left for “Idol” — and watched her perform with a big smile on his face. “I think it shows people that … if you can dream it, it’ll happen. No matter how long it takes, it will happen,” he said. “So I think we should all have some dreams and let’s work towards fulfilling those dreams. Because I think Crystal … she’s showing us that no matter where you come from, what you think, you can really make it happen.” That can-do message has spread all the way down to the school Bowersox attended, Oak Harbor Middle School, where principal Marie Wittman has been using an old video of the singer winning her sixth-grade talent contest as a way to motivate students during their recent Ohio achievement tests. “I can actually play off of Crystal’s success because she was very driven at a young age and has worked so hard,” said Wittman. “I told the students that with hard work and dedication and all of those good things, that they will be successful some day, that they never know where their dreams can take them.” With the annual talent show coming up, she said some students have already taken Bowersox’s example and signed up for guitar lessons thinking that they might follow in the Ohio native’s footsteps. Perhaps nobody is prouder, though, than local musician Ron Rasberry , the man who was one of the first in the area to give Bowersox a shot at playing on a real stage and who has nurtured her musical aspirations for more than a decade. “Man, people are walking around and smiling,” said Rasberry, perched on a stool on the stage at the gritty downtown Toledo bar Papa’s Tavern, where Bowersox began playing at age 14 and where she is now enshrined in a hand-painted mural on the wall beside Rasberry. “This city needs a good shot in the arm, you know. Right now things are little tough and rough around here. … She’s putting smiles on people’s faces that wouldn’t ordinarily watch that show. And I’m one of them.” Get your “Idol” fix on MTV News’ “American Idol” page , where you’ll find all the latest news, interviews and opinions. Lee Dewyze Supporters Psyched For His Homecoming After Making ‘Idol’ Top Three

Friends, teachers and fans gathered to root Dewyze on in his Illinois hometown Wednesday night. By Gil Kaufman Lee Dewyze fans Photo: Gil Kaufman/ MTV News MT. PROSPECT, Illinois — It’s not that Lee Dewyze’s supporters are feeling cocky, but when they — from his high school principal to the drummer in his band to his old boss at Mt. Prospect Paint — were asked if they’re planning to go to his homecoming parade and rally on Friday, the answer was a resounding, triumphant, “Yes!” And that was days, and hours, before Dewyze got the news on Wednesday night that he would be coming home after making it into the “Idol” top three. When the verdict was finally read, the crowd of 100-plus supporters at the Blues Bar in Mt. Prospect erupted into joyous clapping, shouting, whistles and hugs as they all scrambled to figure out who they needed to call in order to get tickets to Friday night’s big event. “My heart is pounding a hundred miles a minute,” said a teary-eyed Karen Kinnare, who could hardly contain her pride at Dewyze’s success. Her husband, a local general contractor, used to buy paint from Dewyze when the guitar slinger was but a humble paint salesman. And though he’d never seen “Idol” before, when Kinnare was watching auditions earlier this year, her husband came in and yelled, “Hey, that’s my paint guy!” Like just about everywhere MTV News went this week in the area, there were plenty of other people at the bar who knew Lee or his family or who had seen him play at the countless clubs in the area. They packed Blues Bar wearing their bright green “Vote 4 Lee” shirts and pins, waiting breathlessly for host Ryan Seacrest to spill the big news. As they killed time in the Blues Brothers-themed bar, they could buy Lee shirts and buttons — including one that referenced his days as a paint salesman that read “Lee Dewyze Shook My Cans” — as well as copies of his two independently released CDs and delicious homemade cookies imprinted with the “Idol” logo and the plea “Vote for Lee!” from the Central Continental Bakery, which is located just across the street. Bakery owner Marilyn Czerniak said she’s sold more than 5,000 cookies to fans across the country over the past few weeks and proudly showed off a signed photo of Lee holding one of the confections that his mother had brought out to Los Angeles for him. Matt Mika, 25, has known Lee for a while, and like a lot of people in the area, he also had a great story about the “Idol” star’s formative musical years. “The first guitar I’ve ever seen him play was my brother’s guitar in my basement, and that was really one of the first nights he ever played guitar,” said Mika of Dewyze, who didn’t pick up the instrument until he was old enough to drive. “I think he’s going to move on. I don’t think he’s going to have any trouble.” Mika’s friend, mowhawked Mike Musich, 24, who went to high school with Lee, said he was also feeling good about things just before the show kicked off. “Tonight I think it’s going to be the same as usual. I think Lee’s going to coast on through and come home and give us a good show on Friday,” said Musich. Once word broke that Dewyze had made the cut, both men were ecstatic and eager to see their old friend and bask in the glory of his newfound fame. “We’ll be lucky to get two minutes with him,” Mika laughed. Just moments after Dewyze made the cut, Tara Battaglia, 18, was already planning on ditching school on Friday to attend the parade. “I was screaming ‘oh my God,’ I was so excited,” said the teen, who was wearing her bright green “Vote 4 Lee” shirt. “I’m probably not going to go to school on Friday. I’m definitely going to follow him around, go to the Cubs game, watch him throw the first pitch, go to the parade, go to the concert. … I knew he was going to make it.” Her sister, Deanna, 19, was equally excited, but admitted that she got nervous when Seacrest was chatting up the other contestants first. “I was biting my nails, I was so nervous,” she said. “And when they said his name, I screamed and almost fell off my chair.” Earlier in the day, Dr. Patricia Tedaldi-Monti, dean of students at Prospect High School, where Dewyze attended high school before transferring to an alternative school during his senior year, said Lee promised her he’d make it big someday. Surrounded by a variety of Lee-shirts in her office, Tedaldi-Monti recalled the day when the shy teenager who was always tapping out a beat on his desk or leg and playing an imaginary guitar came into her office and told her, “I’m going to be a rock star. “And you [and my other teachers] are going to be in the front row, and I’m going to be playing a really big concert.” She laughed, recalling that she told him, “Well stay in touch, because I’d like to see that really big concert.” And though she counseled him to keep reaching for his dreams while planning for a backup, Lee’s promise is now coming true. “And so, it is going to happen,” she said proudly. “He’s a rock star.” Get your “Idol” fix on MTV News’ “American Idol” page , where you’ll find all the latest news, interviews and opinions.
