Source: Jerritt Clark / Getty Penny Toler Fired After Using Slurs During A Post Game Rant In The Locker Room According to TMZ , the L.A. Sparks have fired General Manager Penny Toler after she admitted using the “N-word” in a post-game rant following a WNBA playoff loss . The Sparks released a statement saying: “Toler was relieved of her duties and will no longer be with the organization, effective immediately. A national search will begin immediately to identify the next general manager of the Sparks. Managing Partner and Governor Eric Holoman will assume the duties in the interim.” Toler reportedly entered the locker room following a Sept. 19th loss to the Connecticut Sun and went on an epic rant calling out the team for their lack of intensity. Toler acknowledged using the word but insists it was not directed as a slur toward one of her players. “It’s unfortunate I used that word,” Toler said … “I shouldn’t. Nobody should. … But you know, like I said, I’m not here to defend word by word by word what I said. I know some of the words that I’m being accused of are embellished.” The Sparks thanked Toler for what she accomplished during her 20 seasons with the franchise. Under her leadership, the Sparks made the playoffs 18 times and won WNBA titles in 2001, 2002 and 2016. Toler was a founding member of the WNBA and played for the Sparks from 1997-1999, scoring the first basket in WNBA history.
Source: Jerritt Clark / Getty 21 Savage Speaks On His Stance Regarding Citizenship For Immigrant Children 21 Savage went through some immigration troubles of his own earlier this year, so on Thursday, he was honored by the National Immigration Law Center. When speaking on the subject, the rapper stated that children who were brought here by their parents and live illegally in America should automatically become citizens. “When you’re a child, you don’t know what’s going on,” 21 Savage said to the Associated Press . “Now, you grow up and got to figure it out. Can’t get a job. Can’t get a license. I’m one of the lucky ones who became successful. It’s a lot of people who can’t.” This comes after 21 was forced to spend 10 days in an U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention center after he was arrested as part of a sting operation in Atlanta. His visa expired in 2006, unknown to him. Savage moved to America from the U.K. when he was only 7-years-old. He added more insight into his opinion of immigrant children living in America, stating something pretty controversial: “I feel like we should be exempt. I feel like we should automatically become citizens.” “When you ain’t got no choice, you should be exempt,” the rapper continued. “It’s not like I was 30, woke up and moved over here. I’ve been here since I was like seven or eight, probably younger than that. I didn’t know anything about visas and all that. I just knew we were moving to a new place.” 21 Savage was honored by the NILC for advocating immigrant justice, also speaking on the increasingly difficult process of obtaining a visa. “They just lose hope,” the rapper said of his fellow immigrants. “I feel like kids who were brought here at young ages, they should automatically be like ‘Yeah, you good to stay here, work and go to college.’ It should be nipped in the bud before it gets to a point before you come of age… We got a fight that we need to continue in this country. It ain’t over yet. “ What do you think of 21’s idea that children brought here by their parents should be granted citizenship?
Travis Scott has been here before. Observers doubted his feelings for Kylie Jenner back when the rapper and reality star began dating. Then, just this past February, rumors of Scott cheating on Kylie grew so strong that the artist canceled a show simply to return home and deny the allegations to his girlfriend in person. So, yes, here we are again. This time, however, Scott is not sitting out and letting the public ruin his reputation. Three days after Travis and Kylie decided to take a break from their relationship, the former has come out and denied all talk of his disloyalty. “It’s really affecting when u see false things said about u once again these false stories about me cheating are just simply not true,” Scott wrote on his Instagram Story Friday, adding: “Focusing on life, music, and family at this moment is what’s real.” Scott isn’t the only person involved in this situation to have spoken out strongly about it. After news of Jenner and Scott’s break-up went viral earlier this week, an allegation started circulating online that Scott had been involved with a woman named Rojean Kar , who goes by YungSweetRo on Instagram. This heretofore unheard of person said the following in response on her own Instagram Story yesterday: “None of these rumors are true, it’s just the internet creating a false narrative. Please stop spreading lies & leave him, her & I alone because it’s affecting real lives. Thank you.” Kylie, meanwhile, has also made two things clear , as you can see in the Tweet down below: 1. She still loves Scott. 2. She absolutely did not go on a date this week with ex-boyfriend Tyga. “Travis and I are on great terms,” Jenner Tweeted this week. “Our main focus right now is Stormi. Our friendship and our daughter is priority.” As for what led to the split? A source previously explained to People Magazine that Kylie would actually love to have a second child in the near future, but Scott is too focused on his career at the moment. That’s actually a pretty normal and understandable reason for a split, if true. Travis Scott has the above to say about all those pesky cheating rumors. Is this really the end, though? Most outlets seem to say otherwise. “They are taking some time but not done,” said a different People source. “They still have some trust issues but their problems have stemmed more from the stress of their lifestyles.” And this is how an E! News insider sums things up for now: “Kylie is young, but she really wants the traditional family life. She has seen her older sisters with big families and multiple kids and she wants the same. “She loved being at home with Travis and their daughter Stormi Webster more than anything. But right now, their priorities are different.” View Slideshow: Kylie Jenner Playboy Cover: Revealed, Very Busty!
Keisha Lance Bottoms , the mayor of Atlanta, just announced that the city reached its goal of raising a whopping $50 million to provide housing for the homeless. Text “RICKEY” to 71007 to join the Rickey Smiley Morning Show mobile club for exclusive news. ( Terms and conditions ). According to reports from Blavity , Atlanta partnered with the United Way of Greater Atlanta to raise the funds. About half of the money came from donations from private organizations, which includes Ameris Bank, who donated the last $114,000 that allowed the city to reach its goal. The other half is from the Homeless Opportunity Bond sale that began under former Mayor Kasim Reed. At the moment, there are over 3,000 homeless people in the city of Atlanta and the money raised will provide 550 homes for the city’s homeless population. “It is a misperception that many people have — that homelessness is represented entirely by the people they see on the streets,” said Jack Hardin, co-chair of the Atlanta Regional Commission on Homelessness. “A far larger proportion of people experiencing homelessness have incomes and function at very high levels, but live on the margins of the economics of our society and any hardship can derail.” This very funding to help curb homelessness in Atlanta was a major priority for former Mayor Kasim Reed’s last year in office. The initiative was initially announced about two years ago, when the city’s largest homeless shelter, Peachtree-Pine, revealed that it was closing its doors. SEE ALSO: How Atlanta Has Changed Since Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms Was Elected [EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW] The building housed as many as 500 people, but ended up closing after a 10-year battle with various city establishments and accusations the shelter was behind a tuberculosis outbreak in the city. It was unanimously approved by the city council Bottoms was apart of before becoming mayor. “We now have the opportunity to end chronic homelessness in our city, and ensure that all women, men and children – regardless of circumstance – have the chance to live stable, meaningful lives and participate fully in their communities,” Reed said in a written statement at the time the plan was approved. Congrats to Mayor Keisha and everyone else involved on such a major accomplishment for the city of Atlanta. Source: Kevin Mazur / Getty The 90’s produced an era of African American brands that revolutionized fashion and left a long lasting affect on Black culture . From Baby Phat to Karl Kani, creative expression through fashion was widely practiced and supported. Among the many brands to leave a dent in Black culture was Cross Colours. Not only was their bright color-blocking aesthetic fueled with political messaging, it was also everything we didn’t know we needed at the time. Carl Jones and TJ Walker founded Cross Colours back in 1989. Their clothing line was a testament to the carefree feeling of the 90’s. Back then, women wore baggy clothes like the men so in some ways, they presented as gender neutral brand. It was a rebellious, fun, colorful way to express yourself and represent the culture, hence their tag line “Clothing without Prejudice”. Cross Colours aimed to have an open dialog on police brutality, drugs, and the educational gap by projecting the positive attributes of black and urban culture. https://www.instagram.com/p/B29oJ_ngIS7/?igshid=15ve8ud4gynva https://www.instagram.com/p/B2otX9ego8S/?igshid=w726t7jcv9ap With such a rich history contributed to the urban community, it is great to see that Cross Colours now has an exhibition at The California African American Museum called, “Cross Colours: Black Fashion in the 20th Century.” The exhibit shows the history of brand from it’s birth in 1989 to current day trends. In an interview with Vogue , Co-curator Tyree Boyd-Pates says the exhibition, “is organized as a visual roadmap of the African America social movements that inspired the brand, both thematically and historically.” He adds, “in particular, it shows how Cross Colours modeled Black pride, community responsibility, and solidarity in the early 1990s.” The messaging of the brand is something that rings very true today. “I can’t believe that the slogan we printed on our T-shirts, ‘Clothing Without Prejudice,’ is something that still needs to be said today,” Jones says. “That was in the ’90s, and I think it’s as relevant today as it was then, maybe even more so.” This exhibition couldn’t have come at a better time. It is a great way of showcasing how fashion can make a statement beyond the clothes you wear. There is a lack of Black designers producing affordable, urban street wear like there was in the 90’s. This exhibition in some ways pays homage to the innovators who used fabric as a way to unite an entire community of people. Personally speaking, I’m jealous of the L.A. residents who get to witness the history of Cross Colors at the California African American Museum. After caping for the likes of Donald Trump and disrespecting Auntie Maxine Waters , it didn’t surprise anyone that social media had a field day this past Sunday when Clueless star Stacey Dash found herself rocking some stylish steel bracelets on her way to central bookings for domestic battery. What is indeed surprising though is that in Dash’s arrest file her ethnicity was listed as, wait for it, “white.” Huh?! TMZ is reporting that the controversial actress who is the product of a Black father and Mexican mother was jotted down as a white woman on her arrest report because, well, the officer thought she was Hispanic. Yup, we don’t get it either. And while most people were quick to believe that Dash herself stated she was Caucasian, it was the officers at the department that decided to label her a “W.” A spokesperson for the Pasco Sheriff’s Department tells us, “Stacey Dash was never asked her race by the arresting deputy, nor did she volunteer any information about her race. The arresting deputy assumed that she was Hispanic.” Unfortunately, police computers do not have a “Hispanic” option when it comes time to fill out these reports even though Hispanics make up 15% of the population in Pasco County. So they decided to list her as “White” because, well, we don’t know. They could’ve just as easily gone with her actual half-race of “Black” but whatever. Still though, no tears shall be shed for Stacey Dash whether White, Black or Hispanic. Maybe Asian, we don’t know.
Let’s face it— A$AP Rocky gets away with wearing a lot of weird stuff in the name of high fashion. Pretty Flacko is trying to start a new wave but we are super good. Page Six is reporting that the Harlem native feels very strongly about the male population sporting color on their hands. In a recent interview with Vogue he discussed a myriad of topics including his AGWE brand, eating habits, masculinity and more. While talking about his influence on fashion he made it clear he hopes to inspire men to paint their nails. Yes, paint their nails—not that there’s anything wrong with that. “I feel like men should be able to do nail art without feeling feminine” the Babushka Boi said as he shows the writer his nails which have been painted with Prada branding. “Yeah! This lady who is really, really good drew Prada on my nails when I was shooting my Prada collaboration, and she did my nails for the photos.” For the last couple of years the “Peso” rapper has been sporting illustrations on his nails. Naturally, the art on his hands typically slants towards his love of fashion but he recently used his nails to protest his infamous arrest in Sweden. Shortly after his release from the jail he posted a photo with “Love” and the American flag painted on his nails. View this post on Instagram I AM OF COURSE DISAPPOINTED BY TODAY’S VERDICT. Source: Adriana M. Barraza/WENN.com / WENN Stop that right thuuur. Rapper Chingy has been laying low for a while, but after hearing his name mentioned in a rumor, the “One Call Away” artist spoke out to clear things up. During an interview on the Ellen Show , comedian Tiffany Haddish was participating in the “Burning Questions” segment with host Ellen Degeneres , that put Haddish in the hot seat. During the segment, Haddish was asked questions about what she looks for in a man and what she likes to do naked, but things took an interesting twist when the comedian expounded on her dating history, specifically celebrities, disclosing that Chingy was a former flame. “Chingy…I mean, it was a hookup,” Haddish said with a smile. “That was the early 2000s, y’all. I don’t even know if that counts anymore.” After clips of the mention spread online, Chingy took to his Instagram , in a since-deleted post, to clear up the rumor, jokingly calling Tiffany Haddish a liar before clarifying it was his brother she dated, not him. “Now @tiffanyhaddish knows damn well that’s a lie an since she lied I’m a tell the truth she use to hook up with my brother not me but she liked me,” he wrote. “Hey if we gone be honest let’s be honest #chingy #facts #juslikethat.” In other Chingy news, the St. Louis rapper recently appeared on BET’s streaming series #FindingBET and discussed his departure from Ludacris ‘s DTP record label and revealed the reason behind his long hiatus. In the interview, Chingy states that at the time he was advised by a newly acquired lawyer that his former label was stealing funds from him. “I hired a lawyer, he was a family lawyer or injury attorney I’m not sure, I was a kid,” Chingy recalled. “I brought him in and the first thing he said was ‘DTP is stealing from you’. So I was trying to talk [to Ludacris and Chaka] but we never could really talk because every time we tried it was just a bunch of people in their feelings so I didn’t want to talk no more. But I still can’t say to this day whether they stole from me or not, because I was a kid and I didn’t know the business.” Chingy goes on to say that although the allegation was there, it was never proven and he regrets the decision because he according to him, led to his blackballing in the industry. The “Right Thurr” rapper also divulged that his beef with Nelly wasn’t intentional and that he feels it was fueled by politics. “I had just put out my second album, Jackpot , which was a great album, but after the issue with DTP, my label put very little promotion into it, so now I am sitting here with a good album that no one knows about. So fast forward and I’m at this show and I see Nelly and he came up to me and gave me a hug; well DTP was there and I guess he saw someone from that camp looking at us because before we could take a photo-he just walks off. So it was at that moment I knew it was about to be some stuff with my career.” In addition to clearing up old business, Chingy is all about the new after dropping his first single in three years, “Just Like That.” View this post on Instagram CHINGY IS NOT NORMAL CHINGY IS A CAMILLIAN CHINGY IS YOUNIVERSAL CHINGY IS ?
