He can do more than just star in hilarious commercials. The Denver Broncos quarterback, whose career was nearly derailed by multiple neck surgeries two years ago, has been named the 2013 Sports Illustrated Sportsman of the Year. The honor comes days after Pope Francis was named Time’s Person of the Year. In his cover story on Manning, who is poised to break Tom Brady’s single-season touchdown pass mark this year, Lee Jenkins writes that Manning “remains the reigning champion of the everyday.” Jenkins also cites Manning’s evolution from someone with unparalleled physical gifts to someone who now succeeds more with his mind and his determination. “The laser rocket arm — Manning’s description in that famous Sprint commercial – is more like a cap gun now,” reads the article. “Yet he is currently piloting the best team in the AFC and the most bountiful offense in the NFL while threatening single-season passing records for yards and touchdowns. Still, that’s not why Manning is Sportsman of the Year for 2013.” So, why did Manning earn this distinction, on that has gone in the past to such star athletes as Derek Jeter and LeBron James? My name is Melissa and I never thought that I would actually be able to meet my idol, Justin Drew Bieber. Lets start off by saying that this wouldn’t have happened without my dad. In August 2012, I told my dad that it would be a dream to be able to meet Justin Bieber. I have a disabled little sister who is such a sweetheart and it had been such a rough past couple of years with her in hospitals and with her many disabilities. My dad wanted to do something really special for me so he started looking into it. He is very good with connections and getting ahold of people. It took months and months. Each response said to contact a different person. It finally led up to having to contact his record company. We finally got ahold of someone there and he said he would look into it. We waited a while and by now it was like December 2012 and then he said its looking good but he isn’t 100% sure, so we waited and waited until the week of the concert. The concert was on Sunday January 27th, 2013 and we waited until the Wednesday before the concert which was the 23rd. We wanted 6 meet and greets because my friend was taking me and we were going with 2 of my other best friends. I wanted to take all of them and my dad and my mom but of course we would be so happy just to receive one for me. Then I finally received an answer from him. My dad texted me saying, “He got you 6 meet and greets for Sunday January 27th!” At this point me and my friend were in class jumping around like crazy. Fast forward to the day of the concert. We got to Miami Airlines Arena and picked up our pink meet and greet bracelets. While in line to meet Justin, we got a peak of his beautiful face through the black curtain. He was wearing a green shirt that said, “We all fall down,” and he looked even more beautiful in person. I told my friends to please let me go first because I really wanted to stand next to him and they all agreed. Then it was our turn. I see one of my friends sprint towards him to stand next to him, I was devastated so I started to stand next to him and nudge her to the side when all of a sudden Justin said, “No no no, sweetie come here I got you,” and he put his hands on my shoulders and gently pushed me down to my knees, placing his hand around my upper arm. The picture was taken so fast and I turned around and gave Justin a big hug! Then we walked out and started freaking out. I realized that there was a camera man recording us while we were screaming and saying, “I just met Justin!” We later learned they were filming one of the nights of the Believe Movie. We went to our concert seats, left side of the stage, row nine. We jammed out to the music and had an amazing time. On the final day of the deadline for the BieberFever contest, my friend Carley sent in our entries for both of the Toronto shows on July 25th and July 26th. We weren’t exactly positive we were going to win but we were really confident. The rest of that week was very stressful. All I could think of was what would happen if I didn’t win the contest. A day before our concert, we checked our emails the entire day praying we would win. At around 10:00 we started to get really nervous because the contest was almost over and we weren’t sure if they had already sent the emails out, but we didn’t loose hope. At around 10:18 we saw that someone had gotten their email for the first Toronto show. We were both so upset because we thought we didn’t win, I almost started bawling my eyes out. Then at 10:21 we got an email from BieberFever. The second I saw that notification I threw Carley’s laptop across the room and fell off the bed. It didn’t even seem real. After we read the entire email I called everyone I knew and told them I was meeting Justin. I’ve never been so happy in my entire life. The next day we went shopping for new outfits and then we went down to our hotel for the night. After we dropped our stuff off, we met up with our friends for a bit and went to the arena. We got our wristbands at around 5:00 and we started lining up. They let us inside around 6:00 and we waited even more. We ended up waiting for about 3 hrs but it was all worth it. When it was close to our turn we saw Kenny walk by the line. The second I saw him I said hi and he asked how I was doing, and winked! I just laughed. It was then close to our turn to go in. The second I saw Justin my heart stopped it was the best moment of my life. He’s so perfect, I can’t even describe it. We walked in the meet and greet and the security guards were being really rude to Carley. Justin noticed and rubbed her arm and told her to relax. At that moment I was literally staring at his tattoos. I really couldn’t tell you why but I was. I couldn’t even believe it was happening. We both said hi to Justin and he said hi and smiled. He put his arm around us and we took the picture. I could feel his hand rubbing my back and it was the best feeling ever. After the picture, security basically rushed us out, but before we left Justin thanked us then we both said “I love you” and he smiled and said, “I love you too.” We walked out of the meet and greet basically hyperventilating. I was in so much shock, I couldn’t even process it. After the meet and greet, around the last song, we saw our picture and I just started crying. I couldn’t even believe it happened. After the concert we met up with our friends and went back to our hotel. The next day we went to the arena and we all split up because we all had different seats. We could see Pattie, Bruce, Cody, Drake and everyone from our seats! After the concert me, Carley and our friend Kayla were walking back to our hotel and we saw Scrappy sitting on a chair outside the tour buses, and Cody in his bus with Fredo. Cody turned around and saw me so I said “Hi Cody,” and he looked back and smiled. We all went back to our hotel and went home the next morning. I never even imagined meeting Justin.
