How Black Hollywood Is Failing The Black Press

Image via Danielle James/iONEDigital How Black Hollywood Is Failing The Black Press This article was written by staff writer and producer Keyaira Kelly and was originally published by our iONE sister site Hello Beautiful . I was a budding journalist nervously going over my iPhone notes for my first red carpet interview when I noticed it. I was proudly standing on the HelloBeautiful place marker waiting for the behind-the-scenes chaos to begin, when I spotted around my feet the strategic placements of almost every other Black outlet in the space. It doesn’t take a veteran to realize the Black press cluster at the end of red carpet lineups makes Black reporters susceptible to the brush-by of celebs and publicists who politely quip, “sorry, ran out of time” as they scurry out of view. Black media often receives rushed statements, or no comment at all, even though that same Black celebrity stopped for E! Online just moments ago. The strategic cafeteria table-esque segregation of Black press on red carpets is one of many micro-aggressions we face as Black journalists. And while being placed at the tail-end of a carpet is more indicative of the predominately White media system and its value assessment of Black press, these oversights are even more hurtful when they come from your own people. The fact is, too many of our Black celebrities are simply not supporting us. Most, if not all, Black celeb power seeds in our communities. The dominant corporations and media powers-that-be mine our talent and resources for the “next big thing.” And Black media celebrates when our people are plucked out of our silos and make it. We cheer as they float up into mainstream heaven with the hopes that, as they ascend, that they will still feel our loose grips on their balloon strings and tug back. But all too often, that mutual support just isn’t felt. In many cases, once a celebrity passes a certain status, they completely forget about those same Black media outlets who were among the first to cover them and their talents. We live in an age where social capital immediately translates into monetary capital. Re-tweets and shares translate into clicks, which drive traffic and advertising dollars and revenue. That’s the reality of our business model. So when small teams of Black journalists take the time and effort to profile a Black celebrity with a large reach and that content isn’t shared with the influencer’s audiences, the impact reverberates through us all. Just a simple scan of some of your favorite Black celebs Twitter and IG feeds and you would discover links to and RTs of interviews they did with White outlet after White outlet, while Black-owned, Black-run press is often omitted from the conversation. I don’t write this with the intent to say the erasure is entirely malicious or even conscious. The lure of White validation is something we’ve all been conditioned to seek. In 2016, Very Smart Brothas writer Damon Young, unpacked how he, and many other Black people, subconsciously value “the attention of the mainstream platforms more than the Black ones”–even if they don’t show us the same love back. We still throw up our hands in outrage when we lose Oscars and Grammys and Golden Globes to mediocre White talent, when in reality those systems were never created to celebrate us in the first place. After Beyoncés “Lemonade” album of the year Grammy snub in 2016, Solange echoed this sentiment urging black folks to “Create your own committees, build your own institutions, give your friends awards, award yourself, and be the gold you wanna hold my g’s.” Black press was born from that same place of urgency. Early 19th-century Black newspapers like the Freedom’s Journal, the North Star and the Frederick Douglas Papers sought to inform Black people from Black perspectives during a time when literacy rates were dismal among our people. After thriving for a century, many Black newspapers folded, unable to attract advertising dollars in the midst of economic crisis. Fortunately, the spirit of those early Black media outlets were reincarnated digitally, with outlets like The Root, Ebony, The Grio, Blavity, Black Voices, Madame Noire, Essence, and HelloBeautiful’s own parent company iOne Digital now carrying the torch and commitment to telling our stories our way. In a time where the press and freedom of speech are under attack more than ever before in modern history, the support from our communities and our celebrities is indispensable. When we say Black Lives Matter, we have to talk about this statement beyond the clutches of police brutality: behind every one of our bylines is a Black life. Black jobs matter. Black families matter. Black POVs matters. Black ownership matters. #BlackPressMatters. And when you have a company, like iOne Digital, which is one of the few remaining Black-owned media companies in the country, snubbed or not acknowledged for our coverage and support of Black interests, it eats away at the foundation of success that keeps our communities alive. So Black celebs, my brothers and sisters, I urge you to pay attention to the Black journalist at the end of the carpet nervously holding her recorder waiting to snag a quote from you. Tell your publicist that you want to give equal time to People Mag and MadameNoire. Google your name and make a note to retweet or share the latest article from the small Black women’s website that can’t get enough of your style choices. When breaking news happens, make it a point to share coverage from the black perspective as well as the big headline from CNN. After you complete an interview, post that photo inside our small studios and don’t forget to tag our brands. We’re all in this together. And nobody wins when the family forgets. Editor’s note: We truly hope this message sinks in with all of our beloved Black celebrities

Russell Simmons Accused Of Rape By Three Women — Completely Denies Committing Any Assault

Russell Simmons Denies Nonconsensual Encounters Russell Simmons’ sexual misconduct woes were highlighted by the New York Times in a new article detailing the stories of three women who allege that Russell raped them while either working for or with Russell at various times in the late 80’s and the 90’s. In the article, a singer named Tina B., a music journalist named Toni Sallie, and a former Def Jam executive named Drew Dixon all describe in detail the incidents at which Russell pinned them down and/or attacked them to force them into intercourse. Despite his track record for dating and “partying” with teenage girls , the fact that allegations such as these have been following him for at least the last 16 years , and his good buddy Brett Ratner — whom was rumored to have teamed up on women with — has also been outed as an abuser …Russell says it’s all a bunch of bull and he has never forced himself on any woman or young girl who didn’t want him. I vehemently deny all these allegations. These horrific accusations have shocked me to my core and all of my relations have been consensual… I have already apologized for the instances of thoughtlessness in my consensual relations. I have separated myself from my businesses and charities in order to not become a distraction. I have re-dedicated myself to spiritual learning, healing and working on behalf of the communities to which I have devoted my life. I have accepted that I can and should get dirt on my sleeves if it means witnessing the birth of a new consciousness about women. What I will not accept is responsibility for what I have not done. So, essentially Russell claims every single woman claiming misconduct or rape is a bold face liar. Hmmm…what do you think? Getty Iamges

4 Important Things to Know Before You Gamble Online

Online gambling and gaming is a great way to get more time with your hobby and it gives more opportunity for winning. However, there are some things you need to know before you make the switch from land-based casinos and gaming to online versions. To keep all aspects of what you enjoy about the games, we suggest a combination of traditional and online casinos . Before you try online casinos and gambling, take note of these points: Online casinos are different from land-based casinos. Sure, there are several similarities, but there are also many differences. You may find the same games, but they may work a bit different. How you put in money and withdraw your winnings are different and usually take a bit of time. You don’t have physical opponents in front of you. There is no closing time. All of these things may be positive or negative for different people. Not all online gambling sites are legitimate. There are many casinos and online gambling sites out there that are waiting to take advantage of your and take your money. Always be alert and make sure that the casino you are considering is legitimate and licensed. Any legitimate site will have good reviews and approval from the gaming commission. They will state on their website that they are governed by certain bodies. If the site you are looking at has no signs of legitimacy or licensing, it’s best you move along. Online casinos are open all hours. This can be a dangerous aspect if you struggle to balance your gaming with work and family. To play responsibly, allocate an hour or two every day or however frequently you play. Stick to those times and make sure to spend time with family and friends and don’t allow your gaming to keep you from work. You can easily lose track of time and get lost in a game. Set an alarm or make an arrangement with your family to remind you when your time is up. It is a lot of fun and very convenient. Online casinos have made it possible for anyone to play and have fun. You can play from anywhere and anytime and this is a great thing! Many of these online sites offer the best bonuses when you sign up as well as throughout the week. Your chances of increasing your wins are also bigger with rolling jackpots and loads of extra opportunities to win more. Keep these things in mind when you try online casinos. As with most things, it has its good and its bad aspects. It’s up to you to decide whether you can handle it and if it is the right way to play for you.

Riverdale Season 2 Episode 5 Recap: When a Stranger Calls

Betty found herself in quite the pickle on Riverdale Season 2 Episode 5 , and that was all thanks to the killer taking her under his wing.  Who would have thought that Betty Cooper would be front and center in this captivating thriller? The killer previously announced his intention to rid the town of the criminals.  When the episode got underway, the killer told Betty to publish an article about her mother if she wanted to keep Polly safe. The article was all about Alice getting arrested back in the day for hanging around with the serpents.  Betty was initially hesitant but published the article after it emerged that her mother thought she and Jughead were making everything up.  The town learned that Alice was not the first-class citizen she was trying to make herself out to be, and she was not impressed. Betty played it cool, and her mother believed it was a revenge plan.  Dark Betty continued to come out when the killer told her to cut Veronica out of her life, or he would be killing her.  Betty did so and epically. Veronica’s ex-boyfriend, Nick St. Claire was in town too with his parents to help a deal between the Lodges and his family go through.  Betty called Veronica trash and said that she was no longer a friend because she was taking drugs with Nick and it was proving who she really was.  A heartbroken Betty left the party, and Nick tried to have sex with Veronica, but she shut him down with a slap.  Betty’s final thing on her list was to call things off with Jughead. That was actually pretty easy when it emerged that Jughead was going full Serpent and pressing on with his initiation.  This all came after the Serpents decided to send a bomb to the Cooper family newspaper. Archie took great pride in telling Jughead Betty was done with him because he was hanging around with the Serpents.  The only thing this did was send Jug straight into Toni’s arms, and the pair seemingly had sex. Is this the end of Bughead?! Betty found herself in a house on the edge of town with the killer telling her she was also the black hood killer.  Betty made a swift getaway and returned to help Cheryl when it emerged that Nick drugged her and attempted to rape her. Veronica and the Pussycats saved her and beat the crap out of Nick.  Betty said that there was no point in getting revenge because it was all done with. Then, the killer called her and said he knew she told Archie the truth.  The killer made the sobbing teen pick the next person to die, or her sister and mother were next to be killed. She picked… Nick St. Claire! What did you think of all the action? Sound off below! View Slideshow: 17 Characters Who Ruined Perfectly Good TV Shows

Mimi Haleyi: Harvey Weinstein Orally Assaulted Me While I Was on My Period

If we documented every sexual assault charge against movie producer Harvey Weinstein , we’d never have time to write about anything else at The Hollywood Gossip. But the accusation leveled against Weinstein this afternoon by a former production assistant named Mimi Haleyi seems worth mentioning because it’s just so appalling. And disgusting, to be honest. An ex-employee of the Weinstein Co., Haleyi sat alongside attorney Gloria Allred in New York City on Tuesday and told the press that she met Weinstein at the 2004 premiere of The Aviator. Two years later, at the Cannes Film Festival, Weinstein invited Haleyi to his hotel room to supposedly discuss business. After “a few minutes of normal conversation,” he attempted to convince Haleyi to give him a massage, she explained. But she declined and left the room. “By that time I was crying, as I felt completely humiliated and stupid for having been excited about meeting with him,” Haleyi said. Following this incident, Weinstein actually asked Haleyi to work on one of his television shows. After this jobs ended, he asked her to go to Paris with him. This seemed like a “romantic” request, Haleyi said today, so she turned it down. Angered that she would say no to him (twice, no less), Weinstein allegedly showed up to Haleyi’s apartment in New York and “physically forced himself in through the door, pleading with me to come to Paris,” she said. But she did not give in. After Weinstein returned from France, Haleyi said she wanted to “maintain a good relationship” with the producer, so she agreed to meet him at his Manhattan apartment. They watched TV for a few minutes, but soon “he was all over me, making sexual advances,” she said, adding: “I said, ‘I am on my period. There is no way this is going to happen. Please stop.’ He wouldn’t take no for an answer.” Weinstein is then accused of backing Haleyi into what looked like a child’s bedroom. “He held me on the bed, I tried to get him off me but … he was extremely persistent and physically overpowering,” she said. “He orally forced himself on me while i was on my period. He even pulled my tampon out. I was mortified. I was in disbelief and disgusted.” After the alleged assault, Haleyi said Weinstein rolled over on his back and asked: “Don’t you feel like we’re so much closer now?” No , she replied. Earlier this month, a New York Times article detailed eight separate settlements Weinstein had arrived at with women who accused him of sexual misconduct. Since this article went viral, countless others in Hollywood have shared their Harvey Weinstein stories. And many sound eerily similar to this one, with women saying Weinstein would invite them to his hotel room under the guise of business… only to force himself on them in various ways . A spokeswoman for Weinstein has previously said that “any allegations of non-consensual sex are unequivocally denied” by him. As of this writing, 54 women have accused Weinstein of sexual assault or harassment. View Slideshow: #MeToo: Stars Share Stories of Sexual Harassment, Assault

Harvey Weinstein Accused of Raping Asia Argento, Forcing Himself on Rosanna Arquette, Mira Sorvino

Last week, the New York Times published an exposé detailing three decades of sexual misconduct allegations against Harvey Weinstein , the wildly successful and influential film mogul who rose to power as co-founder of both Miramax and the Weinstein Company. The piece contained a number of shocking revelations, such as the fact that Weinstein settled out of court with no fewer than eight women who accused him of sexual assault or harassment. Within days of the allegations going public, Weinstein was fired from the company he helped build, following a board of directors meeting that reportedly devolved into a screaming match. In the days leading up to his dismissal, Weinstein sent letters to many of his most powerful allies begging for them to help save his career and restore his reputation. We may never know who responded to the 64-year-old’s pleas, but those who ignored him are likely glad they did, as a new report published today by The New Yorker paints an even more appalling portrait of Weinstein as an unrepentant sexual predator . Over the course of a ten-month investigation, journalist Ronan Farrow claims to have spoken with 13 women who were harassed or assaulted by Weinstein. He also interviewed 16 current and former executives and assistants at the Weinstein Company who say they have witnessed varying degrees of sexual misconduct from Weinstein. The piece also an incriminating audio recording from an NYPD investigation in which Weinstein attempts to coerce a reluctant woman into entering his hotel room. When she protests and accuses him of grabbing her breast without consent, Weinstein responds that he is “used to” engaging in that sort of behavior. Most shocking of all is the article’s revelation that Weinstein raped or attempted to rape several women over the years, including famed actresses Rosanna Arquette, Mira Sorvino, and Asia Argento. Argento says that Weinstein forcibly performed oral sex on her when she was just 21 years old. “‘He asks me to give a massage. I was, like, “Look man, I am no f–king fool,'” Argento tells The New Yorker . “But, looking back, I am a f–king fool. And I am still trying to come to grips with what happened,” she adds. Argento says she kept the encounter to herself for fear that Weinstein would “crush” her and ruin her career. “I know he has crushed a lot of people before,” Argento said. “That’s why this story—in my case, it’s twenty years old, some of them are older—has never come out.” Sorvino says she was able to rebuff Weinstein’s advances, but she believes doing so resulted in irrevocable damage to her career. “There may have been other factors, but I definitely felt iced out and that my rejection of Harvey had something to do with it,” she tells the magazine. Thus far, Weinstein and his legal team have yet to respond to this latest round of allegations. We’ll have further updates on this story as more information becomes available.

Jenelle Evans and David Eason: MARRIED!

There were rumored fights, hesitations and cancelations . But then, at the end of the day, there were simply the sound of wedding bells. That’s right, Teen Mom fans, Jenelle Evans is now a married woman! The veteran MTV personality and the father of her latest child exchanged vows on Saturday at their home in North Carolina. There had been chatter that a fight just prior to the rehearsal dinner had caused Jenelle to squash the ceremony, which wouldn’t have come across as a major surprise to anyone familiar with her temper. But cooler heads and true love prevailed. According to E! News, Evans wore a white lace wedding dress with a sweetheart cut, rocking her hair half-up and accessorizing everything with long, drooping earrings and a necklace. Eason, meanwhile, donned a white suit jacket with a grayish-blue shirt and a black tie. Friends, family members and loved ones gathered for a rustic-themed reception and ate a cake that was made to look like wood with “D + J” carved into it in the middle of a heart. Photographer Celeste Call jumped on Instagram to share a few behind-the-scenes moments from the wedding, including snapshots of the bride getting prepared ahead of her big day. Evans and Eason welcomed nine-month-old daughter Ensley in January and first began dating in September of 2015. The couple proceeded to announce their engagement via Instagram in February, a development that was also documented on an episode of Teen Mom 2. Wrote Call as a caption to the first wedding photo posted at the outset of this article: Jenelle & David post ceremony, congrats! #teenmom #teenmom2 #jenelleevans #abdjs #wedding #weddingdj #djfun #wilmingtonweddings #wilmingtonnc #charlotte #charlottenc #raleigh #raleighnc #mtv #mtv2 #bride #groom #wrightsvillebeach #djjason. Jenelle, of course, is the mother of three kids overall: Ensley, Jace Evans and Kaiser Griffith. She told E! not long before tying the knot that she envisioned role for each child on her special day. “I definitely think that Ensley will be old enough to be a flower girl alongside David’s daughter, Maryssa,” Jenelle said, adding: “While reading our vows, I would like the girls to be part of the bridesmaids and the boys to be part of the groomsmen.” It’s unclear at this time whether Jenelle’s mother, Barbara, received a wedding invite. The two have battled over custody of Jace for years. “I can’t forgive someone that’s just not going to give me back my son, so, and it’s still going on,” Jenelle has told Us Weekly. “It hasn’t been resolved. And if I had custody of him now maybe I would have invited her, but I’m not at the moment.” But that’s a scandal for another day. This occasion is all about Evans and Eason. “David is such a humble man and has never disrespected me. He can handle me so well,” Jenelle says. “He treats my boys as if they were his own and that’s all I ever wanted for me and my family.” CONGRATS TO THE NEWLYWEDS!
