‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2’ First Look: Dane DeHaan Is Your New Harry Osborn

Fanboy movie news is out of control today. If this were the 1930s we’d need a massive montage of spinning newspaper headlines. First, talk of Darkseid in Justice League , then the (extremely uninspired) poster from Star Trek Into Darkness , and new art from Man of Steel . Not to be outdone, Marc Webb , readying The Amazing Spider-Man 2 , has thwipped a tweet our way with the first glimpse of our new Harry Osborne – Dane DeHaan. Dane DeHaan, whose ten letter name makes economic a mere three consonants and two vowels, was said to be in the running for Spidey’s new foe against other young men like Alden Ehrenreich (a good actor, but too many letters), Brady Corbet, Eddie Redmayne , Boyd Holbrook, Douglas Booth and Sam Claflin . DeHaan, if you recall, was the main character in the surprisingly effective found-footage superhero (or was it supervillain ?) film Chronicle . Harry Osborn, the son of OsCorp’s Norman Osborn, was played by James Franco in the original Sam Raimi trilogy. DeHaan certainly has that weight-of-the-world sulk down pat, which is a key part of Webb’s Spider-Man aesthetic. The gals who flock to see skinny high school aged white boys will have their needs met, despite DeHaan actually being nearly 27. (That’s okay, Andrew Garfield will be over 30 when The Amazing Spider-Man 2 comes out, which leads me to think that I should probably be rubbing some of that sticky, milky Spidey substance all over my pores.) In the first Amazing Spider-Man 2 look Tweeted today by Webb, DeHaan has a bit of a scrappy look (don’tcha just want to tussle his hair?) but there’s something ominous in his eyes… as if off in the distance he sees an epic climax involving well known New York City landmarks and an inordinate amount of computer generated imagery. Academy Names 15 As Best Documentary Oscar Contenders; ‘Central Park Five’ Snubbed

Fifteen docs advanced to the final stages for Oscar consideration Monday. While the films making the cut are, of course, notable, some others that did not are also. Today’s winner of the New York Film Critics Circle for Best Non-Fiction film of 2012, Central Park Five , which made headlines recently because New York City officials attempted to gain access to the film’s outtakes related to a pending civil suit, did not make the cut. Other high profile docs also left out were Toronto’s West of Memphis and Sundance’s Marina Abramovic: The Artist is Present as well as Magnolia’s The Queen of Versailles . While distributor IFC Films will likely be disappointed by the CP5 omission by the Academy, it will celebrate the inclusion of How To Survive a Plague , an AIDS doc that opened quietly, but to acclaim for its bravery. The distributor also had its Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry in the list. [ Related: Movieline’s Central Park Five coverage ] Tribeca’s Bully , which opened to controversy for its R-rating from the MPAA to pushback from distributor The Weinstein Company, also made the cut. The 15 films are listed below in alphabetical order by title, with their production companies (information provided by AMPAS):

Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry , Never Sorry LLC
Bully , The Bully Project LLC

The A-List Goes Indie: Spirit Awards Nominations Heavy On Hollywood Alpha Males

When the Independent Spirit Awards  take place in Santa Monica on the Saturday before the Academy Awards  next February,  there should be plenty of A-list testosterone coursing through the event tent.  The slate of nominations for the 2013 honors , which celebrate independent film, is studded with box-office friendly male actor who’ve carried studio films. And Jennifer Lawrence .  Best Male Lead Jack Black ( Bernie) , Bradley Cooper ( Silver Linings Playbook ) and Matthew McConaughey ( Killer Joe ) , who’ve all starred in studio pictures,  count for three of the six Best Male Lead nominations. John Hawkes ( The Sessions ) , who’s on the verge of leading-man status, Wendell Pierce ( Four ) and Thure Lindhardt ( Keep The Lights On ) round out the category. That’s a considerably more Hollywood pack than last year’s nominations, of which there were only five: The biggest studio star in that bunch was Ryan Gosling ( Drive ), whose fellow nominees were, respectively French and Mexican actors, Jean Dujardin ( The Artist ) and Demián Bichir ( A Better Life ) and Woody Harrelson ( Rampart )  and Michael Shannon ( Take Shelter ), who are best known for excellent character work. Best Female Lead The Female Acting categories are not so larded with heavy hitters, but they do include   The Hunger Games star Lawrence, nominated for Best Female Lead based on her performance in Silver Linings Playbook , and Helen Hunt, who nabbed a Best Supporting Female nomination for her portrayal of a sex therapist in The Sessions . Best Supporting Male Actor The Best Supporting Male actor category also has two A-listers: Bruce Willis , for his work in Wes Anderson ‘s Moonrise Kingdom, and, nominated in his second category, McConaughey  for his inspired pelvic thrusting in Magic Mike . As far as I’m concerned, Sam Rockwell, who’s nominated for Seven Psychopaths , is an A-lister, too, even if he hasn’t anchored a tentpole movie. With the indie film market growing increasingly choked with product, big-box-office actors populating independent movies — and getting honored for their work — probably isn’t going away any time soon since A-list names help draw investors and distributors to small projects. In terms of reading the Oscar tea leaves, five Spirit nominations for Moonrise Kingdom , including Best Film and Best Director, bodes well for Wes Anderson’s Academy Award nomination chances. Hawkes and Hunt’s actor nominations could provide the spark that The Sessions needs to get back into the Oscar derby. Multiple nominations for Silver Linings Playbook should intensify the film’s already golden Oscar glow, while nods to  Beasts of the Southern Wild   and its child star  Quvenzhané Wallis  are making the film look like one strong dark-horse candidate. Who wasn’t nominated for a Spirit Award is also interesting.  Despite fine performances in both Hyde Park on Hudson and Moonrise Kingdom , longtime studio-star-turned-indie-darling Bill Murray got bupkis, and, though Channing Tatum got the lion’s share of the press when  Magic Mike  was released — in part because he produced the picture and brought his real-life experiences as a stripper to the story — his G-string came up empty. Justin Bieber Pulled Over, Ticketed in Ferrari

While Justin Bieber tries to figure out from whom he ought to pull out, the singer was pulled over in Los Angeles last night. Justin was cited by a police officer in West Hollywood around 6:30 p.m., with law enforcement officials confirming to TMZ that Bieber did, indeed, receive a ticket this time around. Bieber isn’t the best driver on the planet. He’s gotten in trouble with the law on multiple occasions for driving mishaps and illegal maneuvers, though it’s unclear what this violation was for. It’s been a rough week overall for JB. He broke up with Selena Gomez a few days ago, with many of her co-stars coming out to bash the artist over Twitter. Other reports, meanwhile, have linked Bieber with Barbara Palvin and state that he’s become so smitten with Victoria’s Secret models that he wants to live the life of a wild bachelor.

Rihanna Goes Topless (AGAIN!), Smokes Cigarette

The Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show taped in NYC last night, with models from Miranda Kerr to Erin Heatherton walking around in lingerie. But who would have guessed Rihanna would be the one to show the most skin? Once again, the singer took to Instagram and posted a photo of herself topless, this time backstage at the event with a cigarette dangling from her lips. “And that’s a wrizzap,” Rihanna wrote as a caption to the following image: What is up with all these desperate cries for attention from the artist, who recently released a preview of her new collaboration with Chris Brown, ” Nobodies Business ?” We have no idea and we sort of worry about Rihanna. But we also enjoy staring.

Lady Gaga on Weight Gain: What About Adele?!?

About a month ago, Lady Gaga admitted: she’s gained a little weight. It’s an issue that has tormented the singer for her entire life. In response, Gaga has started a “Body Revolution” on her Little Monsters website, asking fans to embrace their curves and inner beauty. Speaking to Stylist UK about the movement, she referenced another artist and compared the reception Adele has received versus the one that’s recently plagued Gaga. “Adele is bigger than me,” Gaga said . “How come nobody says anything about it? She’s so wonderful and I think her confidence is something I have to match. She has set the bar very high for a lot of woman. I need to be a confident woman and just say politically active things when I can that are helpful to young people.” And while it might help to shelve those lasagna recipes , Gaga says the true key to self-confidence comes from within – and without. “We should all make an effort to be nice to one another all the time,” Gaga says of women around the world.
