Tenacious D Return To Reclaim Title As Rock Ultra-Gods

New video chronicles the duo’s return to rockdom and announces their third studio album, Rize of the Fenix. By Kevin P. Sullivan Tenacious D’s Kyle Gass and Jack Black Photo: Columbia “Some call them kings. Others call them gods, but one thing that everyone agreed on was that Tenacious D was more talented than the Beatles, Stones and Zeppelin combined.” Those are the immortal words of “Extra”‘s Maria Menounos, retelling the tragic story of the greatest rock band to ever rock, Tenacious D . Members Jack Black and Kyle Gass apparently fell on rough times after the box-office failure of their film, “Tenacious D in the Pick of Destiny.” But after years in a mental hospital and “lots of drugs,” Tenacious D has returned with a brand new video and news of their third studio album, Rize of the Fenix. The new video shares the story of the lost years of Tenacious D. After a nervous breakdown, Gass spent years locked away, only to escape in hopes of reuniting with his former bandmate, Black, now going by the name “Hollywood Jack.” Entitled “To Be the Best,” the video chronicles D’s climb back to the top of all of rockdom. In traditional Tenacious D style, the boys have some of their famous friends stop by to join in on the fun. In an interview recalling D’s spectacular fall from grace, Academy Award-winning actor Tim Robbins shared his memory of Gass’ battle with his demons. “Kyle couldn’t take the pressure,” he said. “It was no more Kyle. It was only Rage Kage.” The most tragic part of the return of Tenacious D comes at the expense of Val Kilmer ‘s life. The method actor takes a bullet fired by Gass and meant for Black, but his death was not in vain. The incident spurred the Tenacious D reunion fans have been begging for since 2008. Unfortunately, during their hiatus, both Black and Gass forgot how to rock. Thankfully, Dave Grohl , Josh Groban and two books, “Blowing F—ing Minds for Idiots” and “Impregnating Ears for Idiots,” were there to help out. Rize of the Fenix will be in stores on May 15. Black Keys Start Beef With Spotify’s Sean Parker

‘He’s an a–hole,’ drummer Patrick Carney says of Parker in response to claims the Spotify board member made at SXSW. By James Montgomery Black Keys’ Patrick Carney Photo: Jason Merritt/ Getty Images At this point, you’re probably aware that the Black Keys ‘ Patrick Carney has taken over the Noel Gallagher / Brandon Flowers role as the industry’s “oft-quoted sh– talker” — a list of his recent accomplishments includes beefing with Lady Gaga fans , calling Nickelback “crap” (though he subsequently sorta apologized ), and singling out members of the media as being “pricks” — and he’s living up to the title with his latest comments that take shots at Napster founder/ Spotify boardmember Sean Parker. In a new interview with Michigan radio station WGRD , Carney took issue with Parker’s recent comments that within two years, Spotify would overtake iTunes in total revenue, mostly because, well: “Because [Parker’s] an a–hole. That guy has $2 billion that he made from figuring out ways to steal royalties from artists, and that’s the bottom line,” Carney said. “You can’t really trust anybody like that. The idea of a streaming service, like Netflix for music, I’m totally not against it. It’s just we won’t put all of our music on it until there are enough subscribers for it to make sense.” The subscription-based Spotify would have to really churn and burn if it wants to catch iTunes in terms of revenue (iTunes sells individual tracks, and controls roughly 70 percent of the U.S. download market), and let’s just say Carney isn’t rooting for them to do it. “Trust me, [Keys frontman] Dan [Auerbach] and I like to make money. If it was fair to the artist, we would be involved in it. I honestly don’t want to see Sean Parker succeed in anything,” he said. “I imagine if Spotify becomes something that people are willing to pay for, then I’m sure iTunes will just create their own service, and they’re actually fair to artists.” In the past, the Black Keys famously refused to allow their El Camino album to stream on sites like Spotify. And though the debate over Spotify’s royalty payments to artists continues, Parker has yet to respond to Carney’s barbs. What do you think of Carney’s position on Spotify? Happy Birthday, Mariah Carey!

Mariah Carey turns 42 years old today, but don’t bother getting the artist any gifts. She’s already received the best present of all: these adorable twins . The singer also has a reason to smile these days because husband Nick Cannon is on the mend following a health scare centered around a case of mild kidney failure. These two really do make a cute, happy couple. What does the professional future hold for Mariah? It’s unclear, although she’s one of many big names rumored for season two of The X Factor . She’d undoubtedly be a major draw. For now, though, she’s pretty much a full-time mother, one who is sitting at home and waiting for your birthday wishes. Also celebrating birthdays today: Jessie J (24), Brenda Song (24), Fergie (37), Nathan Fillion (41) and Quentin Tarantino (49).

‘Hunger Games’ Rakes In $155 Million At Box Office

‘Games’ had third-highest opening ever, beating out all ‘Twilight Saga’ movie openings and every non-sequel ever made. By Ryan J. Downey Josh Hutcherson in “The Hunger Games” Photo: Lionsgate Much like Katniss Everdeen herself, “The Hunger Games” ‘ aim was true. When it comes to box-office records, it’s hard to keep a good book down. “The Hunger Games” beat all of the “Twilight Saga” movies and every single non-sequel ever with the third-biggest opening weekend of all time. The big-screen adaptation of the first novel in the massively popular young adult trilogy collected $155 million domestically, a figure that was just $3.4 million less than “The Dark Knight” opening in 2008. (“Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2” is still #1 with $169.1 million). Audiences gave the movie a CinemaScore of “A.” “The Hunger Games” collected an estimated $19.7 million in midnight screenings alone. Librarians, academics and bookworms of all stripes should note that all of the movies in the top five “all-time” list are based on some sort of printed source material. “Potter,” “Dark Knight,” “Hunger Games,” “Spider-Man 3” ($151 million) and “The Twilight Saga: New Moon” ($142 million) were, of course, all drawn from either novels or long-running comic book characters. “The Hunger Games” made another $59.3 million overseas, which is about on par with the debuts of the opening installments in both the “Twilight” and “Harry Potter” franchises. The next installment in author Suzanne Collins’ trilogy, “Catching Fire,” will see its film adaptation arrive in November of next year. But “Hunger Games” star Jennifer Lawrence will be back in theaters well before that. The 21-year-old Oscar nominee’s new horror flick, “House at the End of the Street,” is due September 21. MTV News will exclusively unveil the full trailer for the movie online this Thursday morning. The latest from “Hush” director Mark Tonderai will see Lawrence in a role much different than skilled archer Katniss Everdeen, as she’ll play a high school student who gets tangled up with a guy who has very dark secrets. “House” had an estimated production budget of $7 million for Relativity Media, which is standard issue for the genre. That’s quite a bit less than the $78 million Lionsgate spent on “The Hunger Games,” but the indie studio surely isn’t sweating that number: It’s already the biggest movie on record for the home of the “Saw” franchise. “The Hunger Games” had an 85 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes at press time, which is exactly the same as last weekend’s #1 film, “21 Jump Street.” The comedically driven movie version of the earnest late ’80s TV drama about cops who went undercover in high schools was #2 this week with $21.3 million, for a total of $71 million. “Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax,” which enjoyed the eighth-highest debut for an animated movie earlier this month, was #3 with $13.1 million and a $177.3 million total. “John Carter” was #4 with $5 million for a $62.3 million total, and “Act of Valor” rounded out the top five with $2 million for a $66 million total. Although those totals are similar, “John Carter” carried a reported production budget of $250 million while “Valor” was made for $12 million.
