Singer reportedly signs for three albums at rate of $1 million each. By Jocelyn Vena Madonna Photo: Getty Images As Madonna inches closer to the release of her in-the-works album, a report has surfaced that the Queen of Pop has signed a deal with Interscope Records, making her labelmates with music superstars like Lady Gaga and Eminem. The report first appeared in the New York Post early Wednesday (December 14), and a source confirmed the deal to Billboard . Madonna will reportedly work with the label on three records for $1 million each. Reps for the singer and the label had not responded to MTV News’ requests for comment by press time. Madonna will also remain with Live Nation, with whom she signed a deal in 2007. Currently she has a 10-year “360 deal” worth upward of $100 million that covers touring and merchandise. Live Nation CEO Irving Azoff hinted back in February that a merger could happen for the star sometime this year. Live Nation always had intended to partner with a record label for the release of Madge’s next album. “Live Nation, prior to the merger, entered into some of these all-rights deals, so there are certain artists, Madonna being one of them, that there is a recorded-music strategy,” Azoff said. “Once she gets the album recorded, we’ll sit down with her and her manager, Guy Oseary, and figure out what’s best for the record. It has to start with the music.” A source tells the New York Post, “It’s just about keeping relevance so that she can tour. She is still in the demo phase, but the idea is to get the first album out early next year.” Madonna is expected to drop her highly anticipated album this spring. In February, she’ll not only release her film “W.E.,” but she’s also slated to take the stage during the Super Bowl halftime show . She just shot the video for her song “Give Me All Your Love,” which features Nicki Minaj and M.I.A. The shoot made headlines when Nicki tweeted about kissing Madonna on the set of the clip, directed by the Megaforce. Are you looking forward to new music from Madonna? Tell us below! DJ/Producer tells MTV News he’s ‘super-happy’ and looking forward to another ‘bleepy’ year. By Akshay Bhansali Afrojack Photo: Getty Images Sure, Skrillex clenched the #1 spot on MTV’s Best EDM Artist of 2011 list, but Nick van de Wall, stage name Afrojack is still celebrating. The DJ/producer had a near-perfect year, and he continues the trend with his latest accolade: a #5 ranking in MTV’s top 10. “Yooooo! I’m amazed MTV voted me #5 Best EDM Artist of 2011,” Afrojack told MTV News in a statement. “Super-happy that you guys dig my stuff so much. I’m gonna try and make your radio a little more fresh, and your clubs extra bouncy, and bleepy, in 2012. Thanks for all of [your] support and see you in 2012!!” Save for mentor David Guetta , Afrojack had more hits on U.S. radio in 2011 than any other artist in electronic dance music. Beyonc
Between radio hits, headlining gigs and even his own documentary, the French DJ/producer is a dance-music heavyweight. By Akshay Bhansali David Guetta Photo: Getty Images If he built a bridge between urban music and electronic music last year, in 2011, French DJ/producer David Guetta now presides over a superhighway that extends around the world. In our Best Electronic Dance Music Artists of 2011 coverage, MTV’s roundtable has named Guetta our #2 EDM Artist of 2011 — but that doesn’t begin to explain his impact on the industry. David Guetta is now a pop-music superstar. After collecting a Grammy in February for his remix of Madonna’s “Revolver,” Guetta teased his next opus, Nothing but the Beat, during Miami Music Week in March. His highly anticipated follow-up to last year’s One Love would deliver a feature list on steroids, including Ludacris and Taio Cruz teaming up for first single “Little Bad Girl.” Radio hits came in the form of Nicki Minaj and Flo Rida rapping on “Where Them Girls At” and then the album’s latest single, “Without You,” an emotional track with Usher that David calls “the biggest song” on NBTB. Lil Wayne, Chris Brown, Jennifer Hudson, Sia and Timbaland also all lent their vocals to the double disc. For EDM purists, Nothing but the Beat had plenty to offer, like stellar co-productions with Afrojack (“Lunar” and “The Future”) and Avicii (on the Grammy-nominated “Sunshine”). DJ Mag crowned Guetta the #1 DJ on the planet, and he headlined the world’s biggest festival’s, including Belgium’s Tomorrowland Festival, Miami’s Ultra Music Festival and Las Vegas’ Electric Daisy Carnival. Guetta has also hit screens small and large this year. His documentary with Burn, also titled “Nothing but the Beat,” has been screened in New York and L.A. He’s hit “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” and “Jimmy Kimmel Live!,” with Usher, and filmed a viral video with Web sensation Keenan Cahill . His American Music Awards performance with Nicki Minaj seems to indicate that “Turn Me On” will be the next single from Nothing but the Beat, and fans can expect a shocking new video (and much more, we’re sure) early next year. MTV will reveal the best artists, songs and movies of the year. Come to MTV News each day to see more big reveals and check out more of MTV’s Best of 2011 music, TV, movies and news coverage. Over the weekend rapper Canibus added J.Cole to the list of MCs he’s had issue with over the years. What made this latest assault so bizarre is that J. Cole has publicly stated that Canibus is one of his favorite MCs and biggest influences, even playing his music at his shows. Well, it seems that is exactly what Canibus had a problem with. In an open letter, the artist best known for his battle with LL Cool and the classic diss record “Second Round K.O.” , said he felt disrespected by Cole for not mentioning his newer work. “Cole might say he does this to pay homage, but in reality, by him playing my older material owned by my former label dating back to 1998, subsequently overlooking my current works and contributions which directly benefit me now, he is treating me less like an artist that has, and continues to contribute, influence, and inspire an even younger generation of MC’s coming up…” ( read the full letter here ) Canibus went on to add that Cole speaks about him “like he’s dead.” The letter was followed by a diss track called “J. Clone” (listen here) where Bis calls Cole out by his government name Jermaine and replays sound bites of interviews where Cole praises him. “ If it ain’t a threat, then it must be a promise / You said my name so much they think you’re being honest. ” The entire campaign wreaked of a desperate plea for attention and there was a very vocal outcry from fans and artists alike. Sean Price , who has recorded songs with Canibus on several occasions even Tweeted, “You get no points dissin J. Cole. Leave that man alone Canibus.” Well, it appears that Canibus got the message loud and clear and issued the following apology via Youtube. “I’ve seen thousands of comments about this J.Cole track and all of the negativity it’s stirring up, ” he says with Slick Rick’s “Hey Young World” playing in the background. “And after 48 hours of it I feel confident enough to say that it’s unanimous. Hip-Hop has spoken up loud and clear. It’s a “Cole” world right now and you’re the reigning champ, J. I take a full responsibility for my actions and I apologize for stepping over the line.” Truth be told, Canibus’s gripe is not unique. Many veteran hip-hop artists who still record have publicly wished that fans and DJs would embrace their new work instead of living in the past. But that doesn’t mean they go and attack those who still support them. Furthermore, you have some artists like Lil Kim who have waged war on MCs for NOT paying homage in the way Cole has. What kind of message is this sending to new artists? Fourteen years ago Canibus was the young buck “paying homage” and the old head took it the wrong way. You’d think he’d remember that . But throughout his career Canibus has morphed into this curmudgeonly, stereotypical mad rapper picking bones with everyone from Eminem , Joe Budden and Royce Da 5′ 9′ to even KRS-ONE . So the collective eye roll at this J.Cole shot seemed to finally shame him into calming down. “I’m not a hater, I just went too far and I hope hip-hop can forgive me for my foolishness,” he concludes. “I’m gonna go sit my old ass down somewhere right now. Happy Holidays, man.” Finally Twitter uses its powers for good. (Props to Missinfo.TV for the video) RELATED POSTS: Canibus Disses KRS-One In New Song

DJ/producer cements his breakthrough year with five Grammy nominations, including Best New Artist. By Akshay Bhansali Skrillex Photo: Getty Images Back in late 2010, EDM superstar DJ/producer deadmau5 told MTV News a star was on the rise. He said his friend and former post-hardcore/emo rocker Sonny Moore — producing and performing under the name Skrillex — was going to be a force to be reckoned with. “He’s taking over — I think he’s going to outdo me,” deadmau5 told MTV News at the time. “I think he’s going to be the first artist on Beatport to eat my lunch and take over the top 10. I don’t think anyone in Beatport history has ever done it, but if he does it, I’ll be so proud of him, the little goblin!” Now, the ever-prophetic ‘mau5 has more to be proud of. A lot more. In our Best Electronic Dance Music Artists of 2011 coverage, MTV’s roundtable has named Skrillex the #1 EDM Artist of 2011, underscored by his most recent series of accolades: He scored a whopping five Grammy nominations, including being the first DJ to land a Best New Artist nod. Indeed, Moore’s musical background — both on his own and as a member of his former group, From First to Last — has carried over into Skrillex’s brand of fiery electronica. Skrillex has garnered an audience the world over that includes ravers, house heads and rockers alike. In today’s laptop generation of music, Skrillex is the new “rock.” From his remix of Benny Benassi and Gary Go’s “Cinema” to the recent Avicii pop song “Le7els” (not officially released yet), Skrillex dropped massive re-workings in ’11, in addition to his More Monsters and Sprites EP. He scored video games, produced records for Korn, launched his own OWSLA label and hit almost every major festival in the States, including Coachella and Lollapalooza. An exceptional catalog of releases coupled with an incessant touring schedule has made Skrillex the biggest EDM star of the year. In 2012, he plans to tour 322 of the 365 days. While he didn’t expect to become recognized as this year’s biggest success story, Skrillex’s peers say the swell of critical and fan support is fitting. “He definitely deserves it,” former OWSLA tourmate, DJ/producer Porter Robinson, told MTV News. “I’ve been saying it all year: He’s the most influential musician of this year, in any genre. Incredible sound designer. Incredible songwriter. Amazing performer.” “He’s been in bands before,” EDM artist and collaborator Sofi told us. “He’s an excellent songwriter. He can sing. He’s just so versatile that I think that comes through in his music. He kind of brought this ‘rock,’ ‘raw’ element into electronic music. He’s the punk rock of the new generation.” Even industry veteran David Guetta, who lands at #2 on our list of the Best EDM Artists of 2011, agreed with all the praise heaped on Skrillex. “He’s extremely talented, and I’m very happy for him,” Guetta said of Skrill’s Grammy noms. “It’s a statement: I think it’s really good that an artist from our community is nominated just as ‘an artist.’ Not as a ‘dance’ artist, you know? I think that it’s good that [our] music is now getting the attention and the respect that all the other styles of music, like hip-hop, are getting.” MTV will reveal the best artists, songs and movies of the year. Gotta love those ex-hustlers with their big hearts. The Jiggaman is plotting on them rich folks pockets in an effort to raise funds for the broke kids who want to go to college. Hip-hop legend Jay-Z said today he will perform two concerts at Carnegie Hall in February to raise money for his scholarship foundation and United Way of New York City. “I want to do my part to make sure everyone has an opportunity,” Jay-Z said in an interview today. “It’s really a shame when someone has drive and really wants to further their education, and they’re unable to because of their financial situation.” The shows will mark the first time a major solo hip-hop act has been booked for an entire show at the storied Manhattan venue, according to Clive Gillinson, Carnegie Hall’s executive and artistic director. Most of the tickets for the Feb. 6 and 7 shows will go on sale Monday and will be priced at $500 to $2,500. They’re aimed at wealthy individuals, such as hedge-fund executives and others tied to Wall Street, Jay-Z said. “This is about connecting people to help other people,” said the artist, whose real name is Shawn Carter. A portion of the tickets will be offered to the public at much lower prices on Jan. 30. Jay-Z’s Shawn Carter Scholarship Foundation and United Way will split the proceeds from the ticket sales. The United Way works with families and schools to boost the reading proficiency of children from low-income neighborhoods. Raised in the Brooklyn’s Bedford-Stuyvesant district, Jay- Z, rose from poverty to become one of hip-hop’s top-selling solo acts. In 2002, he launched his charity with the help of his mother, Gloria Carter. His nonprofit has given away more than $1.3 million to help 750 needy students attend college. “We know we’re going to raise some money and help some people,” Jay-Z said. “But we’re also going to raise the profile of what I’m doing.” Hov is also making history with this one. It will be the first hip-hop “themed” performer at Carnegie Hall. Aight. Source SplashNews More On Bossip! RihRih Gets Kushed Up And Goes Drizzy H.A.M. Daily debates will pick best song, artist of the year. By Gil Kaufman There are a lot of things to celebrate this time of year. But when you spend all day (and some of the night) obsessing about music, naturally your thoughts turn to best-of lists as December dawns. That’s why MTV and MTV.com will launch a weeklong celebration of the year in music on December 12 in which our experts will debate the year’s best songs, artists and performances. For the first time ever, MTV is corralling staffers from MTV News, MTV.com and MTV Music and Talent to collaborate on three different year-end lists: EDM (electronic dance artist of the year), song of the year and artist of the year. Beginning Monday, from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. ET, during MTV’s morning music hours on AMTV, editors from MTV News, MTV Music & Talent, and MTV.com will take part in a spirited debate, where they will reveal their collective choices for best EDM (electronic dance artist of the year), joined by MTV Iggy. On Wednesday, we’ll unveil the Song of the Year and on Thursday we’ll name our Artist of the Year. During AMTV, the panel will count down their selections from #10 to #3, leaving the audience in limbo to debate the lists and ponder which acts will take the top spots. Each day at 4:59 p.m. ET, MTV News’ Sway Calloway will reveal the top choices and present the award to the #1 pick. After the winner is revealed, the acceptance speech will run sporadically throughout our primetime hours. The debates will also be featured on mtvU and MTV Hits, and extensive news stories will be featured on MTV News and various MTV.com sites. In addition to the panel-selected lists, for the first time, MTV is asking fans to vote on MTV’s best live musical performance of the year and support their favorite artist and song by tweeting #MTVBest2011 . The nominees span MTV’s various award shows and concert series including MTV Video Music Awards, MTV Unplugged, mtvU Woodie Awards, O Music Awards, Live in NYC, Spring Break, mtvU Movies and Music Fest and Buzzworthy Live.
