The Music hitmaker and her director husband Guy Ritchie are due to attend a hearing in Malawi next week (begs07Apr08), when a judge at the country’s High Court is expected to formally approve the couple’s adoption of two-year-old David Banda. But on Thursday (03Apr08), Madonna’s lawyers filed a motion to delay the important hearing until the end of April (08). A court official says, “They have made that application at (the) High Court today and the judge is expected to respond this afternoon.” The initial 2006 adoption caused outrage in the African nation; Madonna and Ritchie were accused of side-stepping the official adoption process. However, the Hollywood stars appear to have won over Malawian officials with their parenting skills. In a confidential report dated 25 March (08) – which has been leaked onto the internet – Probation Officer S. Chisale at the Ministry of Women and Child Development praises the couple for looking after Banda so well. Bay City, Again, Requesting Madonna, To Give Her A Key To The City

The quest to reach out to Bay City’s most famous offspring has begun. Mayor Charles M. Brunner has drafted a letter inviting Madonna to come home to Bay City and finally accept a key to the city. City Commissioner Christopher J. Shannon, frontman for a local rock band, is planning a Madonna tribute album in which he hopes to recruit local musicians to cover hits such as “Like a Virgin,” “Express Yourself” and “Vogue.” Guy Greve, president of the Bay Arts Council, wants to go as far as commissioning an artist to sculpt a statue of Bay City’s Material Girl. “The local arts council would like to pay homage for her artistic contributions,” he said. “I could see a sculpture of her in Bay City. One of Madonna’s famous poses could be made into a sculpture.” Brunner said he has e-mailed a letter to Madonna’s father, Silvio “Tony” Ciccone, who owns a vineyard in Suttons Bay. “I sent it to the winery initially, because that was the only e-mail address I had,” Brunner said. “And I did get an e-mail back,” he said. “They gave me, I believe, his personal e-mail address, so I sent him an e-mail and a copy of the letter inviting her to Bay City – so hopefully maybe something happens through her father.” Brunner is hopeful his words will atone for the actions of past city officials who have rejected Madonna on multiple occasions – much to the dismay of Madonna’s family still living here, including her 96-year-old grandmother. Source: Ryan J. Stanton, The Bay City Times , Telegraph Madonna, who was born in Bay City in 1958 and spent a considerable portion of her childhood visiting family here, was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this past month. That prompted city leaders to reconsider bestowing upon her the infamous key to the city that Mayor Timothy G. Sullivan refused to give her in 1985, when Madonna was considered, by some, too risque for such an honor. City officials in the late 1980s also refused to accept a professional sculpture of Madonna from an Italian artist, citing a belief that her popularity would fade out in time. Nearly three decades since her rise to fame, that notion has failed to come true – Madonna remains a worldwide cultural icon. Just this week, she knocked Elvis Presley from the history books, charting her 37th Top 10 hit with her new single “4 Minutes,” a duet with Justin Timberlake. Presley officially was nudged from his standing as the artist with the most Top 10 hits in rock history, according to Billboard.com. “Far and wide, she wields significant influence in the arts and entertainment world,” said Shannon, Bay City’s 1st Ward Commissioner. “For Bay City to turn its back on that, it would be a shame.” Perhaps best known locally for calling Bay City a “smelly little town” on national television two decades ago – a reference to a former oil refinery that once polluted the city – Madonna graces the cover of Vanity Fair this month, holding the world in her hands for the magazine’s third-annual “Green” issue – her 10th cover for the magazine. Local leaders say she’s a living example to anyone growing up in Bay City with dreams of making it big in the arts world. Since moving to New York City on a whim in 1978, Madonna has gone on to sell more than 200 million albums worldwide, as well as author children’s books and star in and direct films. Today, she lives with her husband, British film director Guy Ritchie, and three children in London. Brunner notes that he met Madonna’s father in January at the Great Lakes Environmental Film Festival. Tony Ciccone catered the wine for the inaugural event at the State Theatre in Bay City. Brunner, a former rock band drummer, is hoping he’ll make a lasting connection with Madonna and her family, though he was unsuccessful in reaching out to her longtime friend and publicist Lis Rosenberg, who did not return e-mails from Brunner or The Times. “I’ll do what I can,” Brunner said. “I’ve got a one-page letter. I hope she gets an opportunity to read it. We’ll just keep working on it.” Read a .pdf of Brunner’s letter to Madonna. Martin Ciccone, Madonna’s older brother in Beverly Hills, told The Times that Bay City should invite Madonna to town and give her the key for her 50th birthday on Aug. 16. “I’d say go for it,” he said. “I cannot tell you what she would do. I want to say, yeah.” Shannon said that would be great, but as a founding member of Bay City’s Hell’s Half Mile Film & Music Festival, he’s partial to having the singer slip into town, oh say, in mid-October. “We could even play one of her films,” he said Source ONTD

‘American Idol’ Report Card: Who Nailed Shania Twain Week?

No one flunked outright, but Casey James was the only contestant to impress us much. By Eric Ditzian Shania Twain poses with the “American Idol” Top 6 Photo: FOX Oh, you crazy “American Idol” kids! We’d been worried all day for you. Was the songbook of ’90s country queen Shania Twain the type of “Idol” classroom material that would sink every single one of you? Were we in for a live performance on Tuesday night that would have us harkening back to those ear-bleedingly awful top-24 shows in late February? No and no. Collectively, this was the finest group of performances of the year, and we’re pleased to announce that for the first time, not one contestant notched a failing grade on our weekly “Idol” report. That doesn’t mean we’ve got a bunch of honor students on our hands. In fact, the ranks of the Average Idols have swelled — which is to say that while no one crashed and burned, almost no one soared. Considering how worried we were, though, let’s just be happy with how the whole thing turned out. On to the grades! Excellent Casey James : On Tuesday afternoon, we went ahead and suggested Casey sing “You’re Still the One,” and when Lee went first and busted out that tune, we were worried for Goldilocks. Would he once again try on his rocker hat, even though it has clearly not been fitting for weeks? Nope! Casey has learned his lesson well, because he went slow and acoustic with “Don’t.” From “Heaven” to “Jealous Guy” to last night’s cover, Casey’s wheelhouse really is the smoldering ballad. We think he understands that now. Good Lee Dewyze : One of the hardest things to do on “Idol” is sustain momentum, to follow up one killer performance with another and keep the judges’ praise — those American votes — coming. That Dewyze has followed up last week’s first-rate take on the “Boxer” with a fine, contemporary cover of “You’re Still the One” is cause for applause (even if we did think that song was a better fit for Casey James). The kid has found his niche with an acoustic-guitar-driven, lite indie-rock sound. It’s working well for him. Mike Lynche : While Big Mike’s rendition of “It Only Hurts When I’m Breathing” didn’t go as far in an R&B direction as we might have hoped, at least he indulged that side of his artistic personality. It was no “This Woman’s Work,” but we’ll take it. For the sake of Mike’s future, let’s hope he’s finally ditched that weak-sauce indie-rocker shtick and embraced his R&B soul. Last night’s performance was hardly the stuff of Luther Vandross, as Randy Jackson and Simon Cowell maintained, but it’s a comparison that Mike should take to heart. Average Crystal Bowersox : Remember what we were saying just before about sustaining momentum? It ain’t easy! And perhaps it’s asking a little much to expect MamaSox to equal her best-of-the-season performance last week during “People Get Ready.” But actually, we feel kind of guilty. We suggested Crystal perform “No One Needs to Know Right Now,” and that’s exactly what she did. Unfortunately, she didn’t follow our advice to ditch the song’s country flavor. We warned that Tuesday night would be all about the arrangement. On this front, Bowersox didn’t make the grade. Aaron Kelly : You could see it in Kelly’s eyes: He knew before he even stepped onto the stage that he’s in trouble this week. And after a so-so performance of “You’ve Got a Way,” you could really see that the kid doesn’t want to go home. Who could blame him? Last night, Kelly was as strong as he’s been in the competition, but “Idol” is just that, a competition. If there’s any justice in the reality-show universe, he’ll not only land in the bottom three; this will be the end of the line for this sweet 17-year-old. Siobhan Magnus : We have an idea what Siobhan was thinking when she decided to tramp around the “Idol” auditorium during “Any Man of Mine,” from stage to crowd to stairs and back again: Engage the audience! Have some fun! Her heart may have been in the right place, but what happened in the moment was a young singer struggling to breathe, walk and sing all at the same time. She simply did not look comfortable, and it showed — both on her face and in her pitch. The judges seemed to think Siobhan was back, baby! We have a feeling she’s headed to the bottom three. How would you rate last night’s “Idol” performances? Share your grades in the comments. M.I.A.’s Lady Gaga Comments Stir Mixed Reactions From Fans

‘She sings about riding disco sticks and gets called a genius for it,’ one fan wrote in agreement with M.I.A. By Jocelyn Vena M.I.A. Photo: Michael Loccisano/ FilmMagic M.I.A. has opened quite a can of worms for herself. After taking a few shots at Lady Gaga in an NME interview, calling Gaga “a good mimic” and “not progressive,” fans of both ladies are speaking out for and against the rapper’s comments. “M.I.A. is not even on the same level as GaGa. She only got her 15 seconds of fame because ‘Pineapple Express’ put her song into the trailer. Did anyone give a damn about her before? Nope,” Gabriel wrote. “I respect Lady GaGa a lot more because she worked her way towards where she is. She’s innovative and she’s a talented entertainer and song writer. Have I seen any of those qualities in M.I.A.? Not at all. She’s just trying to get back into the spotlight, but I doubt anybody will care.” Theboogieman631 noted that regardless of their artistic integrities, comparing the two artists is like comparing apples and oranges. “I don’t see how anyone can compare the [two]. Their music doesn’t sound remotely the same,” he wrote. “They’re both on different ends of the spectrum.” Victor defended M.I.A.’s comments, noting that the rapper “is just being honest people and she’s not jealous. Gaga is a mimic nothing more nothing less, she sings about riding disco sticks and gets called a genius for it,” Victor continued. “Her videos rival the advertisements during the Superbowl … Everything she does is a rip off of either Grace Jones, Madonna, Rosin Murphy, Bj

Meet the Obama Death Tweeter Who Will Be Arrested Today [Threats]

Maybe not today, but very soon! His name is Jay Martin and he has spent the evening making sure everyone on Twitter knows he is “dead fucking serious” about wishing death upon Barack Obama . According to his Facebook page, Jay Martin graduated from Vatterott College last year with an IT degree and currently resides in Federal Way, WA. His About Me Page says: “Socially aware, Deep thinker, Artistic, Hip Hop Aficionado, free thinker, Funny Guy.” Oh, and he really, seriously, honestly, wants to kill President Barack Obama. (Thanks for the add, Jay!) It started with this dispatch from Martin’s Twitter account —we’re guessing inspired by tonight’s health care vote: After a bunch of users were like, WTF? Are you serious? Martin responded: But, like, seriously, Jay Martin. Do you REALLY want to kill Barack Obama? Please erase all doubt from our mind: Yikes, OK. Um. We’ll give you one more chance… You say you’re a “funny guy.” So this is just a really, really tasteless joke. Right? RIGHT!? Well! Hope you have a good lawyer. You will definitely need it. Although, Jay Martin is actually pretty excited about his impending legal troubles! You may say you “didn’t do anything wrong,” but the law—specifically 18 USC Sec. 871: —does not agree with you. Jezebel already went over this ! Whoever knowingly and willfully deposits for conveyance in the mail or for a delivery from any post office or by any letter carrier any letter, paper, writing, print, missive, or document containing any threat to take the life of, to kidnap, or to inflict bodily harm upon the President of the United States, the President-elect, the Vice President or other officer next in the order of succession to the office of President of the United States, or the Vice President-elect, or knowingly and willfully otherwise makes any such threat against the President, President-elect, Vice President or other officer next in the order of succession to the office of President, or Vice President-elect, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than five years, or both. When asked for comment via Twitter, Martin responded. Well, no. Honestly, we wanted to give you one last chance to say anything that might convince us and the authorities you are just some idiot kid pounding randomly on a keyboard rather than an idiot kid who is actually issuing serious death threats against the president via Twitter. We will remind you that this conservative blogger is currently under investigation by the Secret Service for saying way less. Hey, FBI, here’s your guy!
