‘I find you disrespectful and rather desperate!!’ Rihanna tweeted about mag’s offensive comments. By Jocelyn Vena Rihanna Photo: Shareif Ziyadat/ FilmMagic Rihanna has taken to Twitter to react to a fashion writer’s comments in a recent issue of the Dutch magazine Jackie . In addition to referring to Rihanna as the “ultimate n—abitch,” the article states that the singer is from Jamaica, when she is actually from the Barbados. While readers were shocked by the magazine’s language, description of the singer and factual inaccuracies, which have been translated by Parlourmagazine.com , the singer herself called the magazine out for their comments. “I hope u can read english, because your magazine is a poor representation of the evolution of human rights! I find you disrespectful and rather desperate!! You ran out of legit, civilized information to print!” she wrote on Twitter . “There are 1000’s of Dutch girls who would love to be recognized for their contributions to your country, you could have given them an article. Instead, u paid to print one degrading an entire race! That’s your contribution to this world! To encourage segregation, to mislead the future leaders to act in the past! You put two words together, with the intent of abasement, that made no sense … ‘N—a Bitch’?!….Well with all respect, on behalf of my race, here are my two words for you … F— YOU!!!” The magazine has taken to Facebook to issue an apology for the use of the racial slur, with a note from its editor-in-chief, Eva Hoeke. “First: thanks for all your responses. We are of course very fed up over this and especially very shocked. However I’m glad that we’re engaging in a dialogue on this page — not everybody does that. Thanks for this. Other than that I can be brief about this: this should have never happened. Period,” Hoeke wrote. “While the author meant no harm — the title of the article was intended as a joke — it was a bad joke, to say the least. And that slipped through my, the editor-in-chief’s, fingers. Stupid, painful and sucks for all concerned. The author has been addressed on it, and now I can only ensure that these terms will no longer end up in the magazine,” the statement continued. “Furthermore I hope that you all believe there was absolutely no racist motive behind the choice of words. It was stupid, it was naive to think that this was an acceptable form of slang — you hear it all the time on tv and radio, then your idea of what is normal apparently shifts — but it was especially misguided: there was no malice behind it. We make our magazine with love, energy and enthusiasm, and it can sometimes happen that someone is out of line. And then you can only do one thing: apologize. And hope that others wish to accept it. From the bottom of my heart I say it again: we never intended to offend anyone. And I mean that.” Do you think the magazine’s apology is enough? Tell us in the comments. Related Artists Rihanna
From Parisian fashion shows to presidential powwows, Gaga was everywhere in 2011 — and MTV News followed her every step of the way. By James Montgomery Lady Gaga Photo: Getty Images As 2011 draws to a close, it’s difficult to look back over the past 12 months and not remember all the headlines made by one Lady Gaga . Unlike some of her pop contemporaries, Gaga never seemed to take a day off. Hers was an unending, 365-day news cycle, a constant stream of tabloid speculation, Twitter missives, high-gloss fashion shoots, globe-spanning promotional appearances, red-carpet escapades, super-secret video projects, television specials and political stunts. On top of all that, she somehow also found time to release Born This Way, not only the year’s most anticipated album, but one of its most thought-provoking and forward-thinking too. At the end of the third year of her reign, it’s no longer a question of when she sleeps, but if she does at all. So it’s little wonder that, as MTV News counts down our Top Newsmakers of 2011 , Lady Gaga sits at #1. Bringing you every aspect of her every whim was practically a full-time job, one requiring its own team of tireless reporters, editors and producers (“MTV News: Special Gaga Unit”). And they were in overdrive from the very beginning of the year, when Gaga premiered the first Born This Way track at a Thierry Mugler fashion show in January, then followed that up by debuting the album’s title track and arriving at the Grammys “Born This Way” and “Judas” ), both of which were prologue to the release of the BTW album itself, a massive, multi-pronged promotional masterstroke that saw her appear everywhere from “Oprah” to “Ellen” and partner with everyone from Amazon to Zynga. She also guest-edited several publications, premiered an in-depth documentary, “Inside the Outside,” live on MTV and greeted fans on the eve of BTW ‘s debut in New York City. In short, she was everywhere, and her hard work (and 99-cent Amazon pricing plan ) paid off, as Born This Way sold 1.1 million copies in its first week , the most of any album since 50 Cent’s The Massacre in 2005. The album held on to #1 on the Billboard albums chart in its second week, too, making it one of the only releases this year to (temporarily) displace Adele’s 21 from the top spot. Once her album was out, if anything, Gaga only ramped up her schedule, premiering even more music videos, announcing a photo book and opening the 2011 Video Music Awards as her alter ego, Jo Calderone . As 2011 entered the home stretch, she met with President Obama to discuss the bullying epidemic, announced she was already working on the follow-up to Born This Way and basked in the glow of her three Grammy nominations, including a nod for Album of the Year, and plotted a massive 2012 world tour . And, with that last bit of news, she basically assured that she very well be next year’s Top Newsmaker too. Don’t worry, we’re already clearing our schedules. Over the past 12 months, Gaga not only continued her rule as the most-famous person on the planet, she expanded her empire. Her fame was hard-earned, and she doesn’t show any signs of relinquishing it anytime soon. Because above all else, Gaga is our most tireless superstar. MTV News counts down the stories that mattered to you most, from Lady Gaga’s call to action to Amy Winehouse’s untimely death. By Gil Kaufman Amy Winehouse Photo: Getty Images Like you, we’re pop-culture obsessives. That’s why from stars revealing baby bumps on live TV to the end (or near-end) of two of the most monumental movie franchises in recent memory and the deaths of a pair of the aughts’ quirkiest, most singular personalities, MTV News brought you everything you needed to know about the bold-faced names that mattered to you most in 2011. We looked back at the many big stories of the year and came up with a list of our Top 10 Newsmakers of 2011: 10. Amy Winehouse’s Death At age 27, British soul belter Amy Winehouse was found dead in her London apartment on July 23. The “Rehab” singer had lived a life on the edge, with multiple arrests and stints in detox, and while we were pulling for her, the news of her death from alcohol intoxication was a gut punch. As MTV readers flooded us with remembrances of her sultry voice and no-B.S. persona, everyone from Katy Perry and Rihanna to Nicki Minaj shared their love, fellow musicians paid tribute at the VMAs and I recalled the first time I saw her perform in the U.S. and how the pain in her songs set the stage for such confessional singers as her friend Adele . 9. Damn bruh, just throw her AND her mama under a speeding bus why don’t ya… According to TMZ reports : Kobe Bryant should have known his soon-to-be ex-wife would take him to the cleaners in their divorce … because she learned the wallet-raiding playbook from her mother … so says Vanessa’s ex-step dad. TMZ spoke with Stephen Laine — an inventory manager for a food company who was married to Vanessa’s mother from 1990 to 2003 … and helped raise Vanessa from a child into adulthood. Laine tells us, “Her mother taught her well to wait for the ten-year mark [before divorcing].” He explains, “In California … it’s considered a long term marriage and then she gets paid for life or until she remarries … just like her mother is doing to me.” DAAAAAMN! So how much gwap is Vanessa’s madre getting out of her ex-husband??? Laine continues, “I have to pay her mom $1,800 every month and clearly they don’t need it.” Sources close to Vanessa tell us … Kobe’s soon-to-be ex-mother-in-law is currently living in one of the BBaller’s mansions … and we’re told Vanessa is very good to her. Laine gripes, “I have a six-year-old daughter and that money could be used toward her college fund or something … you’d think she’d care .. but no, she’s spiteful.” You know what? He’s absolutely right. All things considered, she doesn’t need that money now and definitely won’t need it after Vanessa does this “make it rain” dance that she’s about to do. ‘They can’t further their education because of their situation, because of money,’ Hov tells MTV News. By Rob Markman Jay-Z Photo: MTV News It is Jay-Z ‘s competitive spirit that has made him one of the best rappers of all time as well as one of hip-hop’s most successful businesspeople. However, when it comes to his charitable efforts, Hov is driven by something very different: his desire to share his wealth of experience with the world. “You’ve been blessed. Your talent has taken you to places you never thought you would see. I just think as a compassionate human being, you want people to see,” Jay told MTV News before describing the first time he saw Italy. Hov, who was amazed with his own early travels abroad, called an old friend and urged him to “pack a bag” because he simple had to see Italy. On December 8, the God MC announced that he would be playing two benefit shows at New York’s Carnegie Hall , the proceeds from which will go to the United Way of New York City and the Shawn Carter Scholarship Foundation. The money raised will help put low-income NYC students in a position to attend college. Back in September, the Shawn Carter Foundation threw a fundraising carnival on the west side of Manhattan where celebrity guests like New York Yankees slugger Alex Rodriguez and pitcher C.C. Sabathia bought high-priced tickets to help Hov’s cause. All the Watch the Throne MC wants to do is create an opportunity. To help illustrate his interest in helping to educate young people, Jay quoted a line from the final scene of the 1993 Robert De Niro film “A Bronx Tale”: “The saddest thing in life is wasted talent.” “That really bothers me, someone who really applies themselves and wants to go and they can’t further their education because of their situation, because of money or because they have to stay in the house to watch their [siblings],” Jay told MTV News. “Something about that really bothers me.” Jay and his mother, Gloria Carter, started the Shawn Carter foundation in 2002 to help those facing socioeconomic difficulties further their education at institutions of higher learning. The foundation started with one student earning a full ride through college and grew to offer 50 scholarships to students in 50 different states annually. To date, more than 750 students have been awarded scholarships totaling in excess of $1.3 million. Tickets for the Carnegie Hall shows, which will take place on February 6 and 7, will be sold privately and priced at a premium rate, fetching anywhere from $500 to $2,500 to raise a significant pot of money for the charity. Regular fans aren’t completely shut out though. On January 30, a number of reasonably priced tickets will go on sale to the public. The publicly sold seats are being released close to the concert date in hopes of curtailing scalping. “We’re not just doing a show for the sake of it,” Hov said. “For all these years, [the Shawn Carter Scholarship Foundation has] been really grassroots. My mom has been getting on the bus herself and taking kids to orientation and doing this work by herself. Now … we’re building this thing out.” Related Artists Jay-Z
