Jay-Z Marvels At Playing Carnegie Hall Charity Shows

‘Any time I get a chance to expand and broaden the reach of hip-hop is a great thing,’ Jay says of February 6 and 7 shows. By Rob Markman Jay-Z attends the United Way Of New York & Shawn Carter Scholarship Foundation Press Conference on Thursday Photo: Ilya S. Savenok/ FilmMagic First he went from Marcy to Madison Square; now Jay-Z is going from Crooklyn to Carnegie Hall. On February 6 and 7, Hov will play the famed Carnegie Hall — and it’s all for a great cause. “Any time I get a chance to expand and broaden the reach of hip-hop is a great thing for me on a personal level,” Jay said after announcing the shows Thursday (December 8). “When we were looking at hip-hop, we were just happy to play club dates,” Jay told MTV News. “And then Run-DMC started doing arenas, and you’re like, ‘Man, this is possible,’ and it just keeps going further and further.” With the pair of shows — which will be held at Carnegie’s Stern Auditorium — Jay aims to raise millions of dollars for the United Way of New York City and the Shawn Carter Scholarship Foundation in an effort to put low-income NYC students in a position to attend college. Shortly after 11 a.m. Thursday, Hov — as well as top brass from Carnegie Hall, the United Way and the Shawn Carter Scholarship Foundation — gathered in Carnegie to announce the concert and talk about their fundraising efforts. Tickets for the dates will be sold privately and priced at a premium rate, fetching anywhere from $500 to $2,500 to raise a significant pot of money for the charity. Regular fans aren’t completely shut out, though. On January 30, a number of reasonably priced tickets will go on sale to the public. The publicly sold seats are being released so close to the concert date in hopes of curtailing scalping. After the press conference, Jigga sat down with MTV News to explain his motivation. “We’re not just doing a show for the sake of it,” Hov said. “For all these years, [the Shawn Carter Scholarship Foundation has] been really grassroots. My mom has been getting on the bus herself and taking kids to orientation and doing this work by herself. Now … we’re building this thing out.” Jay hasn’t determined how his Carnegie set will look, if he will bring out any guests during his shows or how many times he will perform “N—as in Paris,” but all those questions will be eventually be answered. “We have to do a rendition of ‘N—as in Paris’ in Carnegie Hall; it just has to go down,” Jay said, laughing after being posed the question. “I ain’t think about that. That’ll be great.” Related Photos Kanye, Jay-Z, Nicki Minaj Let Loose At 2011 Victoria’s Secret Show Related Artists Jay-Z

Sleigh Bells’ Reign Of Terror Drops On Valentine’s Day

Band reveals track list and announces Florida tour in support of sophomore album. By James Montgomery Sleigh Bells Photo: Tim Mosenfelder/ Getty Images Having already sufficiently fired up fans with a (thoroughly badass) teaser clip for their upcoming Reign of Terror album, Sleigh Bells are now revealing details about the disc — albeit in a slightly less radical way. According to a press release issued by the band’s publicist, Terror will hit stores February 14 (it’s sure to be a bloody valentine) and features 11 tracks, with appropriately Sleigh Bells-y titles like “True Shred Guitar,” “Demons” and “Road to Hell ” It was produced by guitarist Derek E. Miller, and, as the press release puts it, features “songs that are as crushing and authoritative as their title suggests; they’re effortlessly robust and heavier than any of the band’s previous output … the sonic equivalent of a beautiful shotgun to the head.” Now that’s descriptive! The Bells will also embark on a tour leading up to the release of Terror, making stops all across Miller’s home state of Florida (and nowhere else). The trek kicks off February 2 at the Florida Theatre in Gainesville, and they’ll be taking fellow Floridian Diplo along for the ride, along with Brooklyn’s Liturgy. Reign of Terror is the follow-up to Sleigh Bells’ breakout 2010 album Treats, which they rode to a thunderous performance at the 2011 mtvU Woodie Awards and a collaboration with none other than Beyonc

30 Seconds To Mars Make History At Triumphant Show

Band entered the Guinness Book of World Records on Wednesday night at New York’s Hammerstein Ballroom. By James Montgomery Jared Leto of 30 Seconds to Mars Photo: MTV News NEW YORK — For a band that, over the past three years, has been no stranger to adversity — everything from battles with their label to scraps with censors and the occasional stage collapse — 30 Seconds to Mars had probably never had to deal with the kind of trouble that occurred during the encore of their record-setting show Wednesday night in New York. During the crashing crescendo of “Kings and Queens,” a female fan was crushed against a barricade and required immediate medical assistance. “Queens” was the final song of the band’s set, which was preceded by a lengthy presentation from the folks at Guinness World Records, who honored 30STM for Most Shows Played During An Album Cycle (309 was Guinness’ count). Jared Leto invited fans to join them onstage for the finale. Spirits were high inside the Hammerstein Ballroom, and as “Queens” unfolded, they only got higher … until Leto stopped the song and asked for medics to tend to the injured fan. After 20 solemn minutes, EMTs carried her away on a stretcher. “As soon as she got oxygen, she sat up and is doing OK,” 30STM’s management told MTV News after the show. After getting the all-clear, 30 Seconds to Mars undauntedly finished the song and the night ended with the crowd triumphantly chanting its “woah-oh-oh” hook while streamers fell from the ceiling. And not to downplay the severity of the situation, but it helped illustrate everything that made 30 Seconds to Mars’ record-setting run with This Is War so unique. Their ability to overcome obstacles, their willingness to push on, and the otherworldly bond they share with their fans — displayed best when drummer Shannon Leto left the stage to assist the EMTs. The band had already played more than 300 shows, and yet, they still pushed hard on Wednesday, imbuing songs like “Search and Destroy” and “Night of the Hunter” with walloping guitars, anthemic sing-along choruses and washes of spooky synths. Jared sprinted up and down the catwalk stage (not easy to do in a huge black cloak), shined a massive spotlight into the crowd to illuminate fans’ faces, and even performed a few acoustic numbers mid-set. Shannon pounded his kit as sweat flew, and guitarist Tomo Milicevic crunched chords and charmed ethereal soundscapes out of his ax. It could have been show number one, not the final gig of a two-year trek. Of course, 30STM’s fans matched, if not doubled, the band’s enthusiasm. There were signs in the audience touting the Detroit chapter of the Echelon, and at one point, Leto brought a fan onstage who had traveled all the way from Maryland. Every chorus was sung back to the band loudly, each massive chant repeated at top volume, and the opening chords of each new song greeted with squeals of delight. Fans reached skyward as confetti fell, and ooh-ed and aah-ed as lasers shot from the stage. This was definitely a celebration, in just about every conceivable way. Not surprisingly, the band seemed genuinely touched and a tad nostalgic. Jared told fans that the Guinness award was theirs, too, shouting, “I want everyone in here to carry this with them for the rest of their lives,” as he thrust the certificate above his head. As if their record-setting tour didn’t already tip you off to it, the rather frightening delay proved that 30STM are a band seemingly at their best when forced to push on. And on. And on. 30 Seconds To Mars Call Record-Setting Show A ‘Thank You’

Band will enter the Guinness Book of World Records with Wednesday’s show, their 300th in support of This Is War. By James Montgomery Jared Leto of 30 Seconds to Mars Photo: MTV News Like most things involving his band, Jared Leto’s idea to gun for the Guinness Book of World Records was born out of one part determination, one part mania — and a whole lot of sleep deprivation. “It was my idea. I’m the guilty party here,” he laughed. “But people started to ask us, with an incredulous look, What the f— is wrong with you? or they would kind of look at us and be like, ‘You guys are still on tour?’ And it started to seep in that maybe this was a little bit crazy. And then I remember as a kid, I was a big fan of the Guinness Book of World Records … so I just started thinking, Maybe we should take a shot at it. ” So they did, and on Wednesday night (December 7), with a sold-out concert at New York’s Hammerstein Ballroom, 30 Seconds to Mars will officially set a Guinness World Record for most shows performed during a single album cycle. It’s the 300th they’ve played in support of their This Is War album, and yes, though they’re very tired, they’re also quite honored to hold the record for the world’s longest-running road dogs. “I used to love the [Guinness] Book, you know, world’s fattest twins or world’s longest fingernails, and so it’s fun to think we’re a part of something that was a part of our childhood,” Leto said. “Plus, it’s Mars history, and something fun for us to do and another chance for us to stop, take note, say thank you to the people that have shared the journey and helped to take our dreams and make them reality.” Though the record-setting show is sold out, fans from around the world can still witness the band make history through VyRT.com , an interactive site that will stream the Hammerstein gig in all its glory. Once the show is completed, 30STM will play a pair of low-key benefit performances at New York’s St. Peter’s church, and then, finally, their schedules will be clear. And no, they’re not quite sure what they’ll do with all that free time. “I think the most time we’ve had off over the past two years has been, maybe, two weeks, and we shot a video during that time,” Leto laughed. “It’s almost like taking away your wife or newborn baby and then saying, ‘OK, go and live another life.’ It’s become such a deep, intrinsic part of our daily grind. … It may not be as easy as we’ve all been assuming, but whatever it is … it will be a step towards a really different future.” A future that includes more Mars music? Well, that remains to be seen. For this week, at least, 30 Seconds to Mars aren’t thinking about what lies ahead; they’re remembering everything that’s led them to this point. After all, it’s been quite a journey, to say the very least. “It’s a new beginning; that’s always really strange, exciting, uncomfortable but important. We all know you close one door and another one can open, but I think the future of 30 Seconds to Mars, as undetermined as things may be right now, it’s still very exciting,” Leto said. “There are a lot of projects under that banner; music is one, and we’re also really grateful, and this week is about sharing that with everyone as we say goodbye and thank everyone for the most amazing journey we’ve ever experienced in our lives. We’ll always look back at this time as one of the most important and impactful periods of our creative lives, ever.” Congratulate 30 Seconds to Mars on their record in the comments below! Lindsay Lohan’s Playboy Cover Leaks

Actress was set to debut the cover of January/February issue on ‘Ellen’ next week. By Jocelyn Vena Lindsay Lohan Photo: Toby Canham/Getty Images Just a month after posing for Playboy, Lindsay Lohan’s cover has hit the Net. On the cover, posted by “The Insider,” Lohan appears fully nude in front of a red backdrop, her assets strategically covered by a chair in the shape of the magazine’s iconic bunny ears, leaving mostly everything to the imagination. The cover is definitely a throwback to the vintage shoots from the magazine’s early days. Photos: The highs and lows of Lindsay Lohan. Lohan, who faced a number of legal battles this year, will sit down with Ellen DeGeneres on her talk show December 15 to open up about the headline-making photo shoot for the January/February issue. According to the magazine rep, the “Ellen” stop is the only interview Lohan will give to promote the issue. During her chat, she will reveal another image from the magazine. She was originally slated to debut the cover on the show as well before it leaked online. In an interview with “The Insider” in November, Lindsay’s mom, Dina, opened up about her daughter’s decision to pose for the magazine. “It will be tastefully done,” Dina explained. “She’s been working in front of the camera with Ford Models since she was a little girl, so she kinda knows how to work that.” E! News reported at the time of the November photo shoot that Lohan had to pose a second time for the magazine after her first shoot didn’t get the seal of approval from Playboy founder Hugh Hefner. The source added that while the photos needed to be reshot, Lohan would be keeping one thing the same: She wouldn’t appear fully nude in the issue. A rep for the magazine had not responded to MTV News’ request for comment about the leaked cover by press time. Related Photos The Highs And Lows Of Lindsay Lohan Related Artists Lindsay Lohan

Willow Smith And Nicki Minaj Heat Up ‘Fireball’ Video

Clip, which premiered Wednesday on ‘106 & Park,’ features Smith dancing on an empty street. By James Dinh Willow Smith and Nicki Minaj in “Fireball” Photo: RocNation Don’t let Willow Smith ‘s age fool you: This on-the-rise starlet already knows how to command the center of attention. Her fiery presence is evident in her new “Fireball” video, featuring Nicki Minaj , which premiered Wednesday (December 7) on BET’s “106 & Park.” Directed by Roman Lee, “Fireball” is a simplistic take on Smith’s sassy and youthful energy. It begins with a shot of a deserted sidewalk and cuts to a scene of the 11-year-old singer in front of blazing flames in an elaborately decked out ensemble, including a headpiece. As dancers perform a choreographed routine, Smith is seen strutting down the street with everlasting swag and attitude. “Since I landed here, I gon’ phone up a Obama/ Shook the world up, now I caused a little drama/ Leader of the new school, and yes I’m gonna light up the block to the stage when I wanna,” she sings. It’s not long before Young Willow also shows her dancing skills when she joins in on the extravaganza, throwing in a few hair whips here and there. Minaj visits the street takeover soon after in an over-the-top dress made of fluorescent-colored teddy bears and matching fur boots. While streetlights glimmer on the wet pavement, the Young Money diva dances beside the singer as she spits her guest verse. In a recent interview with Ryan Seacrest , Smith gushed about working with the Harajuku Barbie, saying, “Nicki Minaj is absolutely an amazing person. She has so much energy, and working with her was like just [a] spark. We were coming together with all our art and everything, and it was amazing.” “Fireball” is Smith’s latest single from her debut album, Willow: You Think You Know Me, which is scheduled to hit stores April 3. It’s been just about two months since the pintsize starlet dropped the Stoopid Robots-produced tune. What do you think of the “Fireball” video? Share your reviews in the comments below! ‘Workaholics’ Brings Out Adam DeVine’s ‘Inner Child’

Actor pulls back the curtain on his Adam Demamp, who was just named one of MTV News’ Top 50 TV Characters of 2011. By Rya Backer Blake Anderson, Adam Devine and Anders Holm in “Workaholics” Photo: Comedy Central Adam DeVine is one-third of the sophomoric (and absolutely hilarious) buddy/stoner comedy “Workaholics.” On the Comedy Central show, DeVine plays a character named — wait for it — Adam, a twentysomething with no aspirations other than getting weird with his two best friends when they’re not idling at their generic, low-rung desk jobs at TelAmeriCorp. Since the show’s debut earlier this year, DeVine has created his own catchphrase and graced the audience with such sight gags as becoming a bodybuilder for a day, getting dragged by a car after he’d harpooned its tire and, most shockingly, tucking in a part of his body that … well, we’ll let him explain. Now that MTV News has named DeVine’s Adam Demamp one of the Top 50 TV Characters of 2011 , we caught up with the funnyman to pull back the curtain on his “Workaholics” alter ego: On his favorite scene to shoot : “The bodybuilding episode from season one was probably one of my favorites, only because I’ve always had one of those weird little things in the back of my head saying that if I didn’t want to be an actor and be someone that is an actual human being that can assimilate in society, I would want to be a bodybuilder and just get weirdly tan, grease my muscles, wear a Speedo. So the fact that I got to play one on TV really, really brought the inner child out of me.” Check out our Top 50 TV Characters of 2011, 21-30, including a depressed meth cook and a football coach with a heart of gold. On his catchphrase, “Oh, I like that” : “I like ‘Oh, I like that’ only because that’s something my dad always said, and I’ve since incorporated it into the show, which he gets a kick out of. It’s all for Mom and Dad. Surprisingly, they love the show. My Thanksgiving was weird: It was all about keeping the turkey ‘tight butthole’ and the string-bean casserole getting my cousins ‘torqued.’ ” On the mangina : “That was one of the things that we were so surprised that they, 1. Let us do, and 2. Let us show it. It was like, we wrote it, thinking they were going to turn it down, and they were like, ‘Well, we can just blur it out.’ And then we shot it, and we sent over a cut to Comedy Central to approve, and we sent over a cut that was un-blurred just for shock value, and they were like, ‘We love it! We’re gonna fight for it! We’re gonna talk to the censors and make sure we can do it!’ There’s a part of me that’s like, ‘Yeah! We beat the censors!’ Then there’s a part of me that’s like, ‘My pubic bone is gonna be exposed to the world.’ And then that part of me got really excited, because I have a really handsome pubic bone. I think it’s a cable-television first. I mean, ‘Frasier’ used to do it all the time, so it’s been on network TV. Niles was always tuckin’ back to impress Roz.” On resembling his television character : “I think Demamp comes out on beer six and then leaves my body at beer 11. I’ll get real wild after beer six to beer 11. And then after my 11th beer, I’ll just get really quiet, whereas Adam Demamp I think would start a house fire.” MTV will reveal the best artists, songs and movies of the year. Is Paramore’s ‘Brick’ The Best 2011 MTV Performance?

Band’s triumphant set at Fueled by Ramen anniversary show captures powerful bond with family of fans — vote now! By James Montgomery Paramore’s Hayley Williams performs at the Fueled by Ramen 15th anniversary concert in September Photo: MTV Paramore had what could charitably be described as an interesting 2011, recovering from the departure of founding members Josh and Zac Farro , rediscovering the joy of playing music in the midst of a South American tour , and reconnecting with fans through the debut of their song-a-month “Singles Club.” In short, it’s been the kind of year that would break lesser bands, and yet, Paramore persist, with a reinvigorated sense of purpose and plans for a new album in 2012. And they make no bones about the fact that both of those things are due in no small part to the fervent support of their fanbase. Theirs is a bond that goes beyond mere fandom; they are, as frontwoman Hayley Williams told MTV News earlier this year, “family.” So it is somewhat fitting that, in a year where so much was focused on the inner workings of the band, we bring 2011 to a close by showcasing Paramore playing what amounted to one huge family gathering: their headlining performance at September’s Fueled by Ramen 15th anniversary show , a rousing run-through of their biggest hits (and a couple new tunes) in front of a sold-out, spirited crowd. It was cathartic, it was energetic, and yes, it was plenty sweaty. In a year when MTV featured plenty of performances, it remains one of the highlights. So it’s equally fitting that Paramore’s “Brick by Boring Brick” is in the running for the Best MTV Live Performance of 2011 , up against the likes of Adele’s chill-inducing VMA moment and Beyonc
