Rihanna’s Talk That Talk: Bad Girl Goes Even Badder

Rihanna takes the reins on her new album, which is not only the best of her career, but perhaps the best pop album of the year. By James Montgomery Rihanna Photo: The Image Gate/ Getty Images Rihanna ‘s already Gone Bad, been Rated R and gotten Loud (all within the span of about four years, mind you), which sort of raises the question: What’s left? Well, if her new album, Talk That Talk — in stores November 21 — is any indication, she’s not really sure of the answer. But here’s the brilliant thing about the disc: Rather than go searching for a new public persona, this time around, she’s simply content to sharpen her focus. And in doing that, she’s created an album that is badder, raunchier and louder than anything she’s ever done before; an endlessly compelling, hit-soaked, high-powered thing that’s not only the best effort of her career, but arguably the best pop album of 2011. Talk That Talk outmuscles Born This Way, outguns Femme Fatale and, while it might never outsell 21 (because, really, what album can at this point?), it certainly outworks it. Simply put, it’s the album on which Rihanna absolutely goes for it, pushing her naughty-girl image to the breaking point, embracing the clubs with both arms, strutting and lilting and sassing her way past her pop contemporaries. Working with a blue-ribbon panel of today’s most gifted hitmakers (Dr. Luke, Calvin Harris, Stargate, Bangladesh, No I.D., Hit-Boy, etc.), she’s managed to craft an album that will no doubt bear radio fruit for the foreseeable future (current single “We Found Love” is the #1 song in the country, just in case you didn’t know) but also pulls off the rather interesting feat of being endlessly, obsessively interesting too. Take, for example, album opener “You Da One,” which starts in traditional RiRi territory — building on a slow, skanking rhythm — expands with a starbursty chorus, then contracts nearly as quickly on a knotty, ratcheting middle. Or “Where Have You Been,” a song that not only sees her borrowing lyrics from Geoff Mack’s dusty stomper “I’ve Been Everywhere,” but features a chorus that sounds very much like Faithless’ “Insomina” and a breakdown that recalls stuff like Skrillex. There’s the futuristic, military whomp of the title track (which gets an assist from Jay-Z , who drops bons mots like “I sell out arenas/ I call that getting dome!”); the Stargate-helmed, XX-sampling “Drunk on Love”; and the rattling raunch of “Birthday Cake,” and, perhaps most notably, the oddball, organic machinations of “Cockiness,” a classic Bangladesh track that stitches together vocal whoops, cracking drums and bawling horns and features what might possibly be the year’s best (or silliest) come-on line, when Rihanna coos, “Suck my cockiness/ Lick my persuasion” (it’s either that or Gaga’s “I want your whiskey mouth/ All over my blond south”). Of course, all those production flashes would be empty if RiRi didn’t match them every step of the way. There’s the do-it-on-the-d

Eminem, Dr. Dre Inspire 50 Cent To Take His Time

‘I’ll be dead, I’ll be gone, and the material will still be here to influence new artists,’ 50 tells MTV News. By Rob Markman Eminem Photo: Kevin Mazur/ WireImage Recording with Dr. Dre and Eminem is bound to rub off eventually. While in the middle of recording his upcoming fifth solo album, 50 Cent has learned to take his time in the booth, and that in part explains the delay in releasing his LP. “This is the first time that I’ve recorded and I haven’t put pressure to release at a specific day. I’ve been on the shot clock the entire time. Dre and Em — I mean Dre’s record hasn’t been out in 11 years, so when you talk about perfection, it’s gotta be crazy, right?” he told MTV News while at a New York book signing for his just-released anti-bullying book, “Playground.” Dre’s 2001 was released in 1999 and not long after its release, fans began to hear rumblings about the oft-delayed Detox . Dre, a noted perfectionist, has been said to be putting the finishing touches on the LP for quite some time now, and recently Fif has adopted the super-producer’s ear for detail. “I think that provides additional pressure for him that it’s taken this long, and in Em’s case he has high standards too,” 50 said. “You wouldn’t believe how many times he records the records that you hear. He’s done it over and over and over and over to make it sound like the way that he feels it’s supposed to sound.” For his 2003 breakout hit “In Da Club,” the G-Unit general wasn’t nearly as meticulous as he has recently become. “In the beginning, it was like 30 minutes, ‘In Da Club’ was 30 minutes, to write it, have the vocals laid,” 50 revealed. “I punched in a few times, it didn’t matter it was good. Everybody bought it, they said it’s a classic and now it’s a process where I’m recording it, listening to it and saying, ‘I can do that better than that.’ ” The veteran hitmaker has realized the influence that his catalog has, and it is that realization that has him thinking differently. “I understand it now because all the material that I put out is gonna be here longer than I am,” he said. “So I’ll be dead, I’ll be gone, and the material will still be here to influence new artists moving forward.” Related Videos MTV News Extended Play: 50 Cent Related Artists Eminem Dr. Dre 50 Cent

Michael Jackson House Contents Up For Sale

Auction items from rented home include bed on which Jackson died. By Gil Kaufman Michael Jackson Photo: Getty Images Michael Jackson ‘s fans are notorious for their rabid worship of the late pop star. But will they pony up big bucks to own the bed on which their icon died? We will find out on December 17, when Julien’s Auctions Gallery will auction off the contents of the rented Holmby Hills, California, home that Jackson was renting at the time of his death. Though the announcement of the sale does not mention Jackson by name, it lists a variety of fine art and furnishings from the residence, including a gilded Louis XV headboard (est. $3,000/$4,000) and a $30,000 watercolor painting by Maurice Utrillo. An Associated Press story revealed that the sale of contents of 100 North Carolwood Drive will comprise items left behind by Jackson. The singer passed away in the home on June 25, 2009, and on Monday his personal physician, Dr. Conrad Murray, was found guilty of one felony count of involuntary manslaughter in Jackson’s death. Among the pieces of evidence brought up by prosecution witnesses attesting to Murray’s medical incompetence was the fact that he gave Jackson CPR on a bed instead of a hard surface. The hundreds of items up for sale in the auction include the queen-size bed where Jackson slept. In an ironic twist, just as Murray was getting news of the guilty verdict, reporters were being taken through the three-story home on a private tour in order to publicize the auction. “We want to preserve the history of these items,” said auctioneer Darren Julien of the contents, which include paintings and sculptures Jackson surrounded himself with in the rented home as he tuned up for his planned “This is It” comeback tour. The house, where Jackson lived with his three children from December 2008 until his death, is also separately up for sale. One of the most-personal items on the block ($400) is a chalkboard that hung in the home’s kitchen that features a note from the kids that reads, “I (heart) Daddy. SMILE, it’s for free.” A mirror on an antique armoire in Jackson’s private bedroom featured a message the star wrote to himself that read, “TRAIN, perfection, March April. FULL OUT May,” a reference to the grueling rehearsal schedule the 50-year-old was keeping up as he prepared for the string of concerts that were to begin in London in July 2009. Reporters also saw a “medication room,” the bedroom shown in evidence photos at Murray’s trial, where fans can pick up upholstered chairs smudged with Jackson’s makeup. An attorney for Jackson matriarch Katherine Jackson said that the family is aware of the auction and has made certain that the event does not use Michael’s name or likeness to help sell the items; Jackson’s name is not mentioned in the promotional materials for the auction. By Jocelyn Vena Avril Lavigne Photo: Getty Images Avril Lavigne has been receiving lots of love from her fans after news broke that she was hurt in a bar fight in Los Angeles in the early hours of Sunday morning. The singer is grateful for the support she’s been receiving. “Wanted to thank all of my fans, friends and family for their support over the last couple of days. Saw all ur comments and emails xo thank u,” she wrote via Twitter. In a previous tweet , she said, “#ViolenceIsNeverTheAnswer.” In the aftermath of the weekend fight at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel, police confirmed to E! News that Brody Jenner, who was with Lavigne at the time of the incident, has pressed charges against his attacker or attackers (according to reports, there were up to five). Jenner filed a police report for assault with a deadly weapon. He was allegedly hit with a broken bottle while out partying with Lavigne. In a statement from his manager, Jenner also thanked his fans for the well wishes he has received since the incident. “Brody Jenner is recovering at home after being assaulted in an unprovoked attack this past Saturday night. He appreciates all the calls of support and well wishes,” the statement reads, according to the Los Angeles Times. “As this is an ongoing police investigation, there will be no further statements at this time.” Although little is known about the events of the night, sources tell UsMagazine.com that the altercation took place at Beacher’s Madhouse at the Roosevelt. “At first, the girl called Brody something and that set Avril off so she talked sh– back to them,” the source said, adding that Lavigne initially got into an argument with a woman. “Brody came over aggressively and got involved,” the source said. “They were scuffling on the floor. … Brody was the aggressor and had five guys with him. When they finally got up Brody was bleeding.” Another man reportedly came to the defense of the woman Lavigne was fighting. The source added that “there was no bottle with blood and no bottle broken or anything like that [visible].” Representatives for Lavigne had not responded to MTV News’ request for comment by press time. Trina Teams With Rick Ross On Post-Slip-N-Slide Album

‘Ross has been a mentor in my career from the start,’ she says on ‘RapFix Live.’ By Nadeska Alexis, with reporting by Sway Calloway Trina on “RapFix Live” Photo: Natasha Chandel/ MTV News Trina released her debut album, Da Baddest Bitch, via Slip-n-Slide Records in 2000, and she remained with the Miami-based label to drop four additional LPs, including her most recent, 2010’s Amazin’. But when she stopped by MTV News’ “RapFix Live” on Wednesday (November 9), Trina confirmed that her upcoming sixth album would signal the end of an era with Slip-n-Slide. “I’m no longer considered to be affiliated with Slip-n-Slide,” Trina said. “Slip-n-Slide is like my family. I grew up with those guys, and it’s been a long journey. I love them dearly, but it’s time, in my career, for me to move forward, and I’m excited about taking the next step and seeing what’s there for me.” Trina emphasized that her split with the label was an amicable one and a necessary step in her evolution as an artist. “It’s scary after you’ve been with somebody for all of your career to step out on your own,” she said. “You’re wondering which way to turn, but I’m ready and willing to do what I need to do for myself. “I’m not the kid on Slip-n-Slide’s roster anymore,” she continued. “I’ve spent my whole career with Slip-n-Slide — five albums — and I’m really excited about going forward without them, but I still look at them as family, no matter what.” During her sit-down with Sway, Trina also revealed that she’s been working with Rick Ross to craft her sixth album, which inevitably led to questions about a possible deal with Rozay’s Maybach Music Group. Trina wouldn’t confirm (or deny) if she will be the latest addition to the squad, opting only to speak about her relationship with Ross. “Ross has been a mentor in my career from the start. Even before the world got a chance to see him, he was a part of my team,” she said. “For him to come out and be very successful and do his thing and for me to still have him in my life, it’s a blessing. For me to work with him on my sixth album and have him there to guide it, understand what I want and see my vision, that means everything to me.” What are you expecting from Trina’s work with Rick Ross? Heavy D Remembered By Iconic Producer Pete Rock

Cousin of rap’s Overweight Lover reminisces during call to New York’s Hot 97. By Rob Markman Heavy D Photo: Getty Images Heavy D’s death on Tuesday has hit the entire hip-hop community pretty hard, but for Pete Rock , who not only collaborated with Heav but was his cousin, things are difficult. Still, the legendary hip-hop producer took the time to call in to New York City’s Hot 97 morning show on Wednesday (November 9) and spoke with hosts Peter Rosenberg and Cipha Sounds. “Just trying to fathom the thought of all of this, it’s very hurtful,” Rock said of Heavy D, who was born Dwight Arrington Myers. “This man, he gave me everything.” The trailblazing rapper, who rose to fame with his group Heavy D & the Boyz in the late 1980s, died at 44. While the cause of death remains unconfirmed, early police reports say that Heav complained of having difficulty breathing. After cops responded to a 911 call on Tuesday, a still-conscious Heavy D was transported to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, where he was pronounced dead at 1 p.m. ET. Pete Rock, who is also Heav’s first cousin, told the radio hosts that he was with the rapper/actor just weeks ago and he seemed to be in good health. “It’s hard because it’s still unbelievable. I didn’t expect this to happen this fast, I was just with him a couple of weeks ago,” the producer revealed. “I spent the night; he didn’t even want me to leave. It’s like he didn’t want me to go and I laughed at him … it was crazy.” It was Heavy D who gave the Mount Vernon, New York, producer his start. Mr. Big Stuff’s success helped pave the way for Pete Rock to make his mark with rapper C.L. Smooth. On Pete and Smooth’s 1992 album Mecca and the Soul Brother, the duo even paid homage to deceased Heavy D & the Boyz group member Troy Dixon (a.k.a. Trouble T Roy) on their classic single “They Reminisce Over You (T.R.O.Y.).” “I felt like he was my guider, my person that just put me in place. He was my #1 believer,” Rock said while on the radio. “He was just too good to be true.” The #1 Soul Brother also spoke about the fond memories he shared with his cousin, remarking that their bond was “deeper than music.” Pete also noted that the two musicians had completed a song just two weeks ago. Cobra Starship Plan ‘Cheeky’ Video For ‘Middle Finger’

‘A lot of cheekiness and no middle fingers,’ frontman Gabe Saporta promises of Mac Miller-featuring clip. By Jocelyn Vena Gabe Saporta Photo: MTV News Cobra Starship threw a dance party with Sabi in their “You Make Me Feel … ” video , but the group has some much different plans for their “Middle Finger” clip. Despite the song’s title, however, Cobra frontman Gabe Saporta promised not one middle finger will be raised in the clip. “A lot of cheekiness and no middle fingers,” he promised. “Even though the song is called ‘Middle Finger,’ no middle fingers. I think the video is going to be like you’d expect the whole thing to be like: an ‘eff you’ to everyone, but really it’s about us trying to turn a new leaf and become Good Samaritans.” The track itself — which features up-and-coming MC Mac Miller and is from Cobra’s album Night Shades — is a funky, poppy dance tune about flipping off haters and having a good time. So the planned Australian shoot should be a perfect fit for the sun-kissed track. “We’re going Down Under, which is my favorite thing to do, because it’s going to be summer there when it’s winter here,” Saporta said. The video shoot comes just weeks after the band wrapped an opening slot on Justin Bieber’s My World Tour . It was a moment that stands out for Saporta in a pretty great year for his band. “We were playing, like, 50,000-people stadiums,” Saporta said of the South American jaunt. “It was insane, and I’m from South America too, so for me, it was especially satisfying. I gotta say, for being the most famous kid in the universe, he’s remarkably well-adjusted, and … there’s like 75 people traveling with him. It feels like a family, and it was really nice to be a part of that family for a bit of time.” What are you expecting from the “Middle Finger” video? Let us know in the comments! ‘X Factor’ Mentor Paula Abdul Fights For Her Groups

After an all-group bottom two last week, MTV News’ Jim Cantiello says Abdul isn’t taking any chances. By Jim Cantiello Paula Abdul Photo: Getty Images MTV News’ own Jim Cantiello is exclusively covering “The X Factor” rehearsals. Read on for his fly-on-the-wall backstage report! “X Factor” mentor Paula Abdul is determined to keep her remaining groups — the Stereo Hogzz and Lakoda Rayne — out of the bottom two come results time Thursday night. She’s always hands-on with her contestants, whether TV cameras are around or not, but last week’s all-group bottom two have made her even more passionate about her job. This week in “X Factor” land, Abdul was everywhere you looked, from inside the house powwowing with choreographer Brian Friedman and vocal producer Claude Kelly to the middle of the studio’s parking lot, where she had the crew erect a giant set piece so one of her groups could rehearse on it before they got thrown onstage. Once it came time to rehearse inside the house, Paula huddled with her groups. Literally, they formed a huddle, like football players. Unlike the NFL, however, the quarterback was wearing showstopping stilettos, which made huddling all the more impressive. Breaking news: Paula Abdul has great balance! During rehearsal, Abdul was up on her feet behind the judging table, rocking the choreo for her groups. If a camera caught her, she’d look like one of those overzealous pageant moms on “Toddlers & Tiaras,” only way more fabulous. (Her stilettos deserve a second shout-out, you guys. They were that fierce!) Not only that, she can still really dance, straight up. And her enthusiasm for her acts is infectious. But it’s not only the groups that are jazzed for Wednesday night’s (November 9) performance episode. I overheard one of the Over 30’s telling a producer how all 11 remaining acts will look especially good this go-round. “We’re all so comfortable with our song choices this week,” the contestant gushed. Meanwhile, the backup dancers are quickly becoming the hardest-working members of the “X Factor” team, and their multitasking skills have reached new heights. Exhibit A: Two shirtless male dancers were spotted outside the stage doors working on their suntans while also devouring a plate of craft service and going over some dance moves — at the same time! Dancer skin is pretty common around the “X Factor” stage, actually. In between numbers, you can usually find dozens of backup dancers switching costumes right in front of everyone. (They’re not getting buck naked, mind you. This isn’t “XXX Factor.”) Other tidbits: One contestant had no trouble maneuvering stairs onstage but, hilariously, was confounded by a mic stand. (Turns out the sparkly prop looked great on camera but was faulty. A standard mic stand will suffice.) Willow Smith will be popping in to make an appearance on “The X Factor” this week. All eyes are on whether she’ll say hello to her dad’s old double-decker trailer, which is parked directly outside the studio and houses none other than Simon Cowell. Rumor has it Cowell is angling for a new triple-decker trailer to one-up the Fresh Prince. Amazing. Speaking of Simon, Nicole Scherzinger banned him from her Over 30’s rehearsals. I imagine she doesn’t want him taking credit for her contestants’ success any more. Smart move, Nicole! I have a sneaking suspicion Simon will get plenty of raves for his own contestants this week. After one girl finished a run-through, Simon leapt out of his chair to smother her with a bear hug. Simon was so stoked, in fact, he even stayed around for L.A. Reid’s boys’ rehearsals and — dare I expose him — actually danced during one of L.A.’s contestants’ upbeat numbers. Full disclosure: he does not move like Jagger, but he definitely has impressive rhythm. The $5 million question: Will he boogie during Wednesday night’s live show? You can catch Jim on the “X Factor Pepsi Pre-Show,” streaming at 7 p.m. ET tonight on TheXFactorUSA.com ! Related Artists Paula Abdul

Will Ferrell ‘Flattered’ By Jay-Z/Kanye ‘Paris’ Cameo

‘When I heard it for the first time, I just started to laugh because it felt so surreal,’ he tells MTV News of Throne’s ‘Blades of Glory’ sample. By James Montgomery Will Ferrell Photo: Jason Merritt/ Getty Images It’s one of the biggest — and most inexplicable — hits of 2011, a song so popular that its hook was name-checked during player introductions on Sunday Night Football, so massive that Jay-Z and Kanye West have taken to performing it multiple times per set on their Watch the Throne Tour . We’re talking, of course, about “N—as in Paris,” the max-impact Throne single that has become a sensation, thanks in no small part to producer Hit-Boy’s bouncing beat , West’s pop-cult wordplay (“What’s that jacket, Margiela?”) and, of course, a pair of oddball samples taken from Will Ferrell’s 2007 figure-skating comedy “Blades of Glory.” As you’re probably aware, “Paris” kicks off with Ferrell’s grizzled Chazz Michael Michaels defiantly declaring, “We’re gonna skate to one song and one song only,” then really picks up steam mid-song, when (in a move that could alternately be described as “completely inspired” or “completely insane”), Hit-Boy drops the beat and lets the song roll on a second Ferrell sample: ” No one knows what it means, but it’s provocative … it gets the people going !” And, indeed, it has done just that. “Paris” currently sits atop Billboard ‘s Hip-Hop/R&B Charts, dominates urban radio and has received a thunderous response at Throne shows. And, thanks to Ferrell’s contributions, it’s certainly one of the oddest mainstream hip-hop tracks in recent history too. And if you’re wondering how the whole thing came to be, well, you’re not the only one: Turns out, Ferrell’s pretty mystified by the track too, as he told MTV News in an email Tuesday (November 8). “Kanye reached out to me and I said, ‘Of course,’ ” Ferrell wrote. “I was completely flattered when they asked if they could sample me into the song … and when I heard it for the first time, I just started to laugh because it felt so surreal. But I really did like the song.” So much so, in fact, that Ferrell said he’s hoping to take the Throne collaboration to the next level — “We were trying to film a piece that they would use on the video boards of their concert, but haven’t gotten it together,” he wrote — and the whole process has opened his eyes to an entirely new career opportunity: Being the go-to sample guy on the hip hop circuit. “I think [something from] ‘Step Brothers’ would be good [to use in a song],” he wrote. “Or the Woody Allen movie I did, ‘Melinda and Melinda.’ ” Regardless of whether any of those ideas come to fruition, thanks to the “Paris” success, Ferrell can bask in his newfound street cred, which is certainly at an all-time high. And that’s saying something for a guy who once starred opposite Andre 3000 . “It makes me feel very good,” he wrote. “And completely justified for buying a V-neck sweater made out of nothing but diamonds.” Were you surprised by Will’s Throne cameo?
