Kelly Rowland Calls ‘Motivation’ Success ‘So Unexpected’

‘Somebody came up to me last week and said, ‘How many babies do you think were made off of ‘Motivation’?’ ‘ she laughs to MTV News. By Rebecca Thomas Kelly Rowland in her “Motivation” video Photo: Columbia Records UNIONDALE, New York — Kelly Rowland needed a moment. MTV News had spent a few weeks trying to catch up with the cocoa beauty, and we finally scored some time to chat with her when she hit Nassau Coliseum last week for the New York leg of Chris Brown’s F.A.M.E. Tour . But first, Kelly Ro needed to catch up with her public. After an energetic opening set that included hits from her Destiny’s Child days and the honey-dipped hooks she dropped on rap staples like Nelly’s “Dilemma,” Rowland emerged backstage in a black sequined bodysuit topped with a sheer bolero, positively glowing. A gaggle of label execs and a smattering of VIP fans crammed Rowland’s arena dressing room to celebrate what had clearly been a triumphant night, but it was hard not to feel they were also toasting an impressive year. In April, “Motivation” — an early single that preceded her third solo album, Here I Am — hit radio and started its slow seduction of the Billboard charts, from the Hot 100 (peak #17) to the R&B/Hip-Hop Songs (#1), Digital Songs (#25) and even Ringtones (#3) rankings. The steamy platinum track was atypical fare for Kelly and something of a gamble for a gifted performer who had yet to match her girl-group glory with Stateside solo success. Of course, the risk paid off. ” ‘Motivation,’ wow, ” Kelly said. Back on her tour bus after freshening up, the singer reflected as she relaxed on a cozy leather couch. “It’s a blessing above anything, and it’s just so crazy how something so unexpected — because everything is so tempo-driven on the radio, and I remember being slightly nervous about that, but then I just got over it real quick because I just [had] such great confidence in the record.” With an assist from Young Money general Lil Wayne, the Rico Love/ Jim Jonsin-produced tune let good girl Kelly show off her sensual side — and that silky alto. (In the companion clip, Kells writhes around with some oiled-up dancers, clad in an indigo one-piece that’s more cut-out than cloth.) Fans were soon buzzing about the lyrics, which find the songstress giving her man a titillating, um, pep talk. “Whoa, lover, don’t you dare slow down/ Go longer, you can last more rounds/ Push harder, you’re almost there now,” she sings, adding, “And when we’re done, I don’t wanna feel my … legs.” “I think that there was a side of all women and all people, period; a sensual side, and it just needed to come out this summer,” Kelly said about the song’s heavy rotation. “And I think ‘Motivation’ kinda helped motivate that — a lot,” she laughed. With the infectious, uptempo “Lay It on Me” (featuring Big Sean) already lined up as the follow-up single , K.Ro said she was still blushing over the impact of her million-selling smash. “Somebody came up to me just last week and said, ‘How many babies do you think were made off of ‘Motivation’?’ I was like, ‘Oh my God, I didn’t even think about it like that!’ ” But don’t let the Houston belle fool you: She’s fully embraced what she described as the song’s themes of “sexual freedom” and “confidence.” In fact, while “Motivation” was burning up the charts this summer, Kelly was heating up Vibe magazine’s August/September “Juice” issue, among others, tossing her top for a Janet Jackson-esque cover look. Warrant Singer Jani Lane Died Of Alcohol Poisoning

Los Angeles coroner’s office determined Lane’s death last month was a result of ‘acute ethanol poisoning.’ By Gil Kaufman Warrant’s Jani Lane in 1991 Photo: MTV News Nearly two months after he died in a Los Angeles motel room, county officials announced on Wednesday that former Warrant singer Jani Lane ‘s death was a result of acute alcohol poisoning. Lane (born John Kennedy Oswald), died at age 47 on August 11 in a room at the Comfort Inn in Woodland Hills, California. Though no cause of death was announced at the time, officials said they found a half bottle of alcohol and prescription drugs at the scene. Lane had struggled with substance abuse for a number of years. The Los Angeles Times reported that the L.A. coroner’s office determined that Lane died as a result of “acute ethanol poisoning,” which translates into drinking alcohol until it poisons the system. The singer, best known as the frontman for the 1980s glam metal band whose hits included “Cherry Pie,” pleaded no contest to misdemeanor DUI in 2009 after an arrest for reportedly crashing into a parked car. A similar incident sent him to jail for 120 days in 2010. He left Warrant a number of times over the years, first taking his leave in 1993, as grunge rock took over the charts and pushed hair metal into the shadows. He came back several more times, including most recently in 2008, though he left again that same year. Lane released a solo album, Back Down to One, in 2003. He dabbled in acting, appeared on VH1’s “Celebrity Fit Club” in 2005 and toured with Great White in 2010 as a fill-in lead vocalist. Snoop Dogg Gets NBC Sitcom Deal

Rapper/actor will play a dad in the family comedy show. By Gil Kaufman Snoop Dogg Photo: Donna Ward/Getty Images He started out as a Long Beach hustler, made his bones as a breakout rap star and has played everything from a loveable stoner to Huggy Bear and an undead gangster in the 2001 horror flick “Bones.” But is America ready for Snoop Dogg family sitcom star? According to Deadline Hollywood the d-o-double g’s family comedy project has landed at NBC with a script in the works from veteran comedy writer Don Reo (“Blossom,” “Everybody Hates Chris,” “My Wife and Kids”). Snoop, the family man who has managed to strike a balance between lascivious rhyme dropper and pee-wee football coach, will play a dad in the show, which he will also produce. Snoop has already worked with Reo on the Fox sitcom “Brothers,” a show about a former NFL player on which he played the role of cousin Kenny the Lawyer. He’s already done a dry run as the man of the house in his E! reality show “Snoop Dogg’s Father Hood,” which followed his home life with his wife and three kids over two seasons. Snoop has seesawed between music and movies for years and was recently cast in the title role of the biopic “The Legend of Fillmore Slim,” the story of the 1970s San Francisco blues guitarist and pimp who was often referred to as the “West Coast Godfather of the Game.” Deadline noted that NBC has had mixed success with rapper sitcoms, ranging from the hit 1990s run by Will Smith in “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” to the notoriously awful 2001 pilot starring “Thong Song” star Sisqo and comedy icon Bob Newhart. Rihanna Beats Madonna’s Top 10 Chart Record

Rih now holds record for solo artist with 20 top 10 singles gained in shortest time on Billboard Hot 100. By Jocelyn Vena Rihanna Photo: Samir Hussein/WireImage Pop icons better watch their backs because the new class of pop stars is eyeing your thrones. Last month, Katy Perry tied Michael Jackson’s singles record , and now Rihanna has beaten Madonna ‘s record for a solo artist achieving 20 top 10 singles in the shortest amount of time, according to Billboard . The music industry magazine reports that Rihanna is the fastest solo artist to reach 20 Hot 100 Top 10 singles thanks to her Talk That Talk lead single “We Found Love.” The Calvin Harris-produced track currently sits at #9 in its second week on the chart, after debuting at #16. The rise to the top 10 means that Rihanna has beaten the Queen of Pop herself, Madge, for the quickest rise. She first appeared in the top 10 back in June 2005 with “Pon De Replay.” Since then, she’s had 19 other songs in the top 10 in six years and four months, beating out Madonna by five months. But Rihanna’s achievement only applies to solo artists, as the Beatles hold the all-time record. The foursome took a very swift two years and seven months to amass 20 top 10 singles back in the 1960s. The news comes as Rihanna continues to hype up her Navy for the release of her album later this year. She shot a video for “We Found Love” last month in Northern Ireland. During the shoot, Rihanna made headlines when her “inappropriate state of undress” angered the farmer on whose land she was shooting the video. A release date for the clip hasn’t been announced. Rihanna had this message for her fans about the video: “#WFLvid I really cant stop thinking about this video we just shot! EASILY the BEST video I’ve done thus far! Definitely my fav 1, very powerful.” Related Artists Rihanna Madonna

‘When we make it happen, we’ll invite everybody,’ he tells MTV News of last month’s supposed wedding photos. By Rob Markman Wiz Khalifa Photo: MTV News In his career, Wiz Khalifa has plotted moves that would take him from Pittsburgh unknown to certified rap star. But when it comes to his and Amber Rose’s rumored September wedding , Wiz promises he didn’t plot the fake-out. “That’s my baby. She’s always gonna be there, so when we make it happen, we’ll invite everybody,” he told MTV News. “I promise we didn’t do that on purpose,” Wiz said of the wedding-like pictures of him and his main squeeze that surfaced on the Internet. Though the rapper was dressed in a black tux and Rose in a white dress, Khalifa was simply in Vegas celebrating his birthday with his girl and a group of well-dressed friends. Wiz went on to release a viral video of him and the Taylor Gang flying out to Las Vegas to celebrate. “Man, I couldn’t plan nothing like that,” he told MTV News on the BET Hip Hop Awards black carpet. “I just be chilling. I just be wanting to have a good time, smoke, eat a little weed cake and — boom! — we got married.” After going public with their romance earlier this year, the Pittsburgh spitter appeared on our “RapFix Live” show and was joined by Amber in one of the live stream’s most memorable moments. The lovebirds have become the topic of much blog speculation, mostly due to the model’s previous courtship with Kanye West. MTV News caught up with the couple on the 2011 VMA black carpet, where Rose said that when it comes to marriage, she and her beau are going to wait a while. “We’re just going to take our time and just enjoy each other right now,” she said. “We’re both really busy and we work really hard, and when the time comes, it’s gonna come.” Did you think Wiz and Amber tied the knot last month? Willow Smith, Nicki Minaj Ignite ‘Fireball’

Young ‘Whip My Hair’ singer’s new single premieres on Hot 97. By James Dinh Willow Smith Photo: Vittorio Zunino Celotto/ Getty Images It’s been over a year since Willow Smith ‘s “Whip My Hair” takeover, and since then, the 10-year-old rising pop darling has released follow-up single “21st Century Girl” and has been steadily working on her Roc Nation debut album. On Wednesday (October 5), Smith dropped a Nicki Minaj-assisted party single, “Fireball,” to appease her growing fanbase. Offering world-premiere duties to New York Hot 97 DJ Angie Martinez’s afternoon radio show, “Fireball” is a drum-heavy party tune, where the young starlet gets feisty, shows her swagger and proclaims herself the center of attention. “See, I never been the one to toot my own horn/ Beep beep, now watch me put it on/ I set fire everywhere I play/ Make them all go insane, L.A. to U.K.,” Smith sings with confidence. She keeps the energy going by delivering a simple hook when she repeatedly boasts, “I’m the fireball of the party/ I’m the fire” atop a layer of chants. Minaj chimes in about two minutes into the song, sharing bragging rights with Smith, offering her usual rapping eccentrics and even name-dropping the singer’s famous parents. “Put you under my wing, I’m the top boss/ Ain’t from Louisiana, but I’m hot sauce/ Cop the mountain, just to go and build a house off so I ain’t never got to worry what the house cost,” the MC spits. Artwork for the song, which has been posted on the singer’s Facebook page, depicts the singer’s signature nameplate inside an orange-lit fireball. On Monday, Smith teased fans about the single’s debut via Twitter , writing, “My new single is coming soon, really soon, like maybe tomorrow soon:) #FIREBALL:)” MTV News recently chatted with “Whip My Hair” producer Ronald “Jukebox” Jackson , who revealed that the pop starlet is close to finishing her full-length debut album. “I did like eight, nine songs on Willow, so right now, we’re in the process of just trying to close out the album,” he said. “It’s just the whole process. You got to think about it: She’s a 10-year-old girl. She’s gotta have a life; she’s gotta be a kid.” Share your review of “Fireball” in the comments below! Related Artists Willow Smith Nicki Minaj

T.I. Gets ‘Support’ From NBA Star Amar’e Stoudemire

‘Me and Tip been homeys for a long time,’ Knicks power forward tells Mixtape Daily. By Rob Markman T.I. Photo: Getty Images Celebrity Favorites: Amar’e Stoudemire Rappers weren’t the only ones who lined up to welcome T.I. home after he was released from prison last week. NBA baller Amar’e Stoudemire joined Tip at Atlanta’s Club Esso to celebrate the MC’s homecoming over the weekend. “Me and Tip been homeys for a long time now, so it’s good to see him back on his feet, back out here in the city,” the Knicks power forward said when MTV News caught up with him on the black carpet for the BET Hip Hop Awards. “I came out to support him.” This time of year, Stoudemire is typically gearing up for the basketball season, but due to a labor dispute between the players union and league owner, the 2011-12 NBA basketball season is currently locked out and may be lost entirely if an agreement isn’t reached soon. Stoudemire has been keeping plenty busy. This past weekend, he attended the Hip Hop Awards and will appear as a presenter when the show airs next Tuesday. Not only that, Amar’e is working on a clothing line with Rachel Roy. So what does a top baller listen to during his downtime? Jay-Z and Kanye West, of course. “Right now, I’m on that Watch the Throne album. You can’t go wrong with that one baby,” he proclaimed. Still, the number-one question on every sports fans mind is: When will players return to the hardwood? Stoudemire didn’t have an answer, though he sounded optimistic. “Hopefully soon. Right now, we’re on the cusp trying to figure out what we’re gonna do with this new deal,” he said. “Once we get that sorted out, we should be able to play soon.” For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines .
