Hot Chelle Rae Soaking Up First VMA Trip

‘Tonight Tonight’ band tells MTV News it plans to stalk Nicki Minaj, Lady Gaga at the big show. By Gil Kaufman Hot Chelle Rae Photo: MTV News LOS ANGELES — You always remember your first time. That’s why Nashville buzz band Hot Chelle Rae have spent this weekend soaking up every ounce of energy they can from the vortex of awesome surrounding Sunday’s 2011 VMAs . “It feels amazing. We are so stoked to be out here and not watching from the couch this year,” said “Tonight Tonight” singer Ryan Follese. “It’s gonna be really, really exciting.” Asked whom he would like to celeb-stalk at the show, Follese didn’t hesitate, picking Nicki Minaj as his obsessive target of choice, based on his hope that she “might have on something insane.” Guitarist Nash Overstreet said he had his sights set on Lady Gaga , but was afraid she might be too dangerous to stalk because it’s possible she’d be wearing something “that could kill you.” When they’re not plotting who to spy on at the show, Hot Chelle Rae have been busy putting the finishing touches on their new album, which bassist Ian Keaggy said is slated to come out in November. “If you like ‘Tonight Tonight,’ honestly, then you’re going to love the record,” Follese said. “There are moments of songs about tense feelings, but for the most part it’s an upbeat, really, really fun record.” The 28th annual MTV Video Music Awards will air live Sunday, August 28, from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles at 9 p.m. ET/PT, following the Selena Gomez-hosted pre-show at 8. By Jocelyn Vena LMFAO Photo: MTV News While LMFAO acted as our red-carpet VMA DJs last year, Sunday will mark their first time at the main show, where their zombie-themed “Party Rock” video is up for Best Choreography. So how is it that the dance-music duo are VMA virgins? “This might be the first time we were invited, or we might not have gotten [the invitation] in the mail,” SkyBlu joked to MTV News on Saturday (August 27), just one day before the show takes place at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles. “The last 28 invitations got lost.” His partner in party crimes, RedFoo, added: “We always move every year, and the Postal Service hasn’t figured it out. And we always get the things, like, ‘That was three months ago; could have went.’ ” Well, now that they’re going, LMFAO have some words for their competition in the category, which includes Britney Spears (“Till the World Ends”), Bruno Mars (“The Lazy Song”), Lady Gaga (“Judas”) and Beyonc

By Gil Kaufman, with additional reporting by Christina Garibaldi Adele Photo: Jon Furniss/ WireImage If Adele is ever feeling unloved again, all she has to do is look at the charts and see that she has more than 3 million people who are really feeling her second album, 21. And as she prepares to take the stage at Sunday night’s VMAs , where she’s nominated for seven awards for the smash hit from her breakthrough effort, “Rolling in the Deep,” she can also take heart in knowing that a lot of her fellow divas are crushing on her as well. “She’s a breath of fresh air and she’s so exciting and her music is adding another dimension to radio that’s so important,” Lady Gaga, who is opening the 2011 VMAs , told MTV News. “She’s [also] a truly lovely person — which, to me, is always my favorite.” Whether they’re enamored with her powerful singing voice, her sweet disposition or her stirring live performances, Adele has plenty of other professional admirers. “I’m so proud [of her],” said “Price Tag” singer and pal Jessie J, who will be the house artist at Sunday’s VMAs . “I did go to school with Adele and she’s a good friend of mine, and I’m so proud of her and I’m so excited to see her. I definitely think she should win something this year. She deserves it.” “Victorious” star Victoria Justice is also a big fan. “I’m really excited to see Adele perform. … ‘Rolling in the Deep’ is amazing, but her new album, 21, is just really, really great. Sofia Coppola Weds Phoenix Singer Thomas Mars

The couple, who has two daughters, married in Italy. By Kelley L. Carter Sofia Coppola and Phoenix’s Thomas Mars Photo: Getty Images Oscar-winner Sofia Coppola and her longtime rocker boyfriend, Thomas Mars, tied the knot Saturday (August 27) in Italy. Coppola and Mars, frontman for Phoenix , said “I do” at a civil ceremony in the southern Italian hamlet of Bernalda, the hometown of Coppola’s grandparents. People.com reported that about 80 people attended the ceremony at a historic building owned by the bride’s famous father, director Francis Ford Coppola, who walked her down the aisle. She was dressed in a lavender gown designed by Azzedine Alaia, and the ceremony was officiated by the town’s mayor, Leonardo Chiruzzi. “Everything went well,” Chiruzzi told the Associated Press. “It was simple, calm, in the garden.” Another famous director, George Lucas, was in attendance. After the evening ceremony, the guests feasted on cheeses, figs, salads, pasta, fish, pork and, of course, the family’s wine. The couple announced their engagement in May and have two children: daughters Romy, 4, and Cosima, 15 months. Earlier this year, Mars said his group was working on the follow-up to their breakout album, Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix . “We’re meeting an orchestra,” Mars told Pedestrian.tv. Bassist Deck D’Arcy added: “We’re going to record a bunch of percussionists in [Australian beach town] Byron Bay.” “It’s a test,” Mars explained. “If it works, we’ll probably come back and record something that’s going to be on the album.” Related Artists Phoenix

Adele’s VMA Performance Is Chiddy Bang’s Most-Anticipated

‘She probably gonna kill it,’ Chiddy Bang’s Xaphoon Jones predicts. By Rob Markman, with reporting by Sway Calloway Adele in her video for “Rolling in the Deep” Photo: Columbia LOS ANGELES — Chiddy Bang won’t be performing at this year’s big show, but the hip-hop breakout duo got a chance to warm things up alongside Swizz Beatz at the Taco Bell Feed the Beat MTV2 VMA concert on Friday at the Music Box. And when asked which act they were most excited to see at Sunday’s Video Music Awards , both group members agreed that Adele tops the list. “Man, we saw Adele at the Brit Awards in the U.K., which is like the British Grammy Awards, and she just made everyone weep with her strong vocals,” the group’s MC, Chiddy, told MTV News’ Sway. The other half of Chiddy, producer Xaphoon Jones, also recalled the February awards show, which featured performances by Tinie Tempah, Cee Lo Green, Rihanna and Adele, who sang “Someone Like You,” the second single from her wildly successful 21 album. “Adele just came out there with just a piano, and she was just making obese, grown British men just cry. It was unbelievable,” Jones said, before speculating on what the British singer might do at the VMAs. “She probably gonna kill it again.” The “Rolling in the Deep” singer’s spirited stage show has provided some unique inspiration for Chiddy Bang. “That’s something I aspire to down the road,” Xaphoon joked, “I just want to make British dudes cry, pretty much.” The 28th annual MTV Video Music Awards will air live Sunday, August 28, from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles at 9 p.m. ET/PT, following the Selena Gomez-hosted pre-show at 8. VMA Expert Kreayshawn Excited To ‘Harass Celebrities’

Sunday’s Video Music Awards red-carpet host aces MTV News quiz. By Kelley L. Carter, with reporting by Christina Garibaldi Kreayshawn Photo: MTV News Kreayshawn jokes that she didn’t grow up with cable TV, but that didn’t stop her from acing an MTV News Video Music Awards quiz. The Bay Area rapper took part in our mock game show, and even impressed herself with how much she knew about past VMA performances. She stumbled a bit over the first question — Who closed last year’s Video Music Awards? — guessing David Bowie, Eminem and Birdman before coming up with the correct answer: a red-suit-wearing Kanye West. She also scored correct guesses when she answered which song Britney Spears sang in her debut Video Music Awards performance (“… Baby One More Time”) and what Madonna song Katy Perry sang (“Like a Virgin”) when she fronted the house band one year. Sounds like she’ll do just fine come Sunday night, when she works the red carpet as a host for MTV.com. Others who’ve filled this role in past years include Coco Rocha, Christian Siriano and Adrienne Bailon. “I’m super excited to be the red-carpet host at this year’s VMAs,” Kreayshawn said. “I can harass celebrities about what they’re wearing, what they ate before they got to the carpet, all sorts of funny stuff.” The 21-year-old was featured on Saturday’s (August 27) new episode of “When I Was 17” with other VMA Best New Artist nominees Big Sean and Tyler, the Creator . Drake Responds To Lil Wayne’s Jay-Z Dis

‘That’s a question for Wayne more than me,’ Drizzy tells MTV News of apparent jabs on ‘I’m Good.’ By Rob Markman Drake Photo: MTV News LOS ANGELES — If there is a Lil Wayne / Jay-Z beef brewing, Drake isn’t indulging. Although he is featured on Weezy’s “It’s Good” — the leaked Carter IV track that finds Lil Tunechi throwing a subliminal shot in Hov’s direction — Drizzy downplayed any involvement. “I just got a beat and did a verse over it,” Drake told MTV News from the red carpet for the BMI Urban Awards n L.A. on Friday before he accepted the award for Songwriter of the Year. “Whatever any other individual has to say, you have to ask the man himself. I just did what I know how to do. I just got on a record. I heard the beat, did a verse and heard the final product.” On the song, VMA Nominee Wayne raps, “Talkin’ ’bout Baby money? I got your Baby money/ Kidnap yo’ bitch, get that how-much-you-love-your-lady money.” To the casual listener, the line doesn’t sound like much, but fanatics can connect the lyric directly to Jay-Z’s jab on the Throne’s “H.A.M.” It all started in 2009 when Cash Money CEO Bryan “Baby” Williams objected to Jay-Z topping MTV News’ Hottest MCs list for that year. “I don’t think he the number one MC, in no kinda way,” Baby said, casting the first stone. “Wayne is the best, he do the most and he make the most money. I don’t think no n—a in the business make more money than us.” It took a few years, but Hov returned fire at the top of this year when he and Kanye leaked their first Watch the Throne track , claiming not only that Birdman and Wayne weren’t seeing Jay-Z-caliber bucks, but that financially, they couldn’t even compare to his wife, Beyonc

Ne-Yo ‘Ecstatic’ For VMA Performance With Pitbull

‘Two of the best-dressed men in the business, what more can you ask for?’ Ne-Yo teases to MTV News. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Jim Cantiello Ne-Yo and Pitbull rehearse for the 2011 VMAs Photo: John Shearer/Wireimage.com Ne-Yo is set to take the stage this Sunday at the 2011 Video Music Awards , but he’s not going it alone. He’ll be up there to assist his pal Pitbull on their hit “Give Me Everything.” Ne-Yo spoke to MTV News at the Nokia Theatre, where the show is set to go live tomorrow night, and he couldn’t hide his excitement about getting to take the VMA stage. The video for the song, which also features Nayer and Afrojack, is also up for Best Pop Video and Best Collaboration. “This is my first time performing at the VMAs, so this is going to be big,” he pledged. “This was the show where, before I made it, where I was like, ‘When I make it, yeah, I definitely got to do that one.’ ” He continued, “And I’m here. I’m happy. I’m definitely beyond happy. I’m gonna maintain; very ecstatic to be here.” So, what should fans expect? “We have some backup dancers: one or two or 60,” Ne-Yo teased. “And two of the best-dressed men in the business, what more can you ask for?” While Pitbull and Ne-Yo are certain to make the Nokia their own party central, they’re not the only big names on the roster of VMA performers. Lady Gaga, Adele, Bruno Mars, Lil Wayne, Chris Brown and Young the Giant are all set to take the stage as well.
