Paramore, Green Day Clash For Musical March Madness Championship

Voting is now open as the bands compete for 2011 title game after tough Final Four challenges. By James Montgomery Paramore Photo: Nigel Crane/ Redferns It’s all come down to this: Green Day and Paramore will meet for the 2011 Musical March Madness title, advancing to the championship game after knocking off a pair of tough challengers in the Final Four. Third-seeded Green Day held off a late charge from upset-minded #9 Disturbed, watching a big lead (nearly 8,000 votes) dwindle down to triple digits as Final Four polls closed Sunday at midnight. In a contest that saw more than 230,000 votes cast, Green Day’s final margin of victory was less than 800. Things weren’t nearly as close in our other Final Four matchup, as #5 Paramore dominated heavily favored #3 My Chemical Romance. Hayley Williams and Co. led from nearly the opening tip, and ran away from MCR — who lost the 2010 MMM championship matchup to Coheed and Cambria — late, ultimately cruising to a 20,000-vote win. That sets up our 2011 championship game, which is not only a clash of two battle-tested bands (Green Day knocked off the likes of U2, Blink-182 and Panic! at the Disco in this year’s tourney, while Paramore survived showdowns against foes like No Doubt and Tokio Hotel), but also serves as the culmination of a year-long quest for revenge: Both Green Day and Paramore were upset in the opening round of last year’s MMM and have spent the past 12 months seething about that fact. In short, this one’s been a long time coming. So, why wait to get the action under way? Championship game voting has begun over on the Newsroom blog! Polls will remain open until Monday (April 4) at midnight ET. And since it’s the championship game, we want to keep things suspenseful, which means results — and our 2011 MMM champion — won’t be revealed until Tuesday on MTVNews.com. By Jocelyn Vena Pauly D Photo: MTV News Shortly after it was announced that Pauly D would be the resident DJ at Rain nightclub at the Palms Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, the “Jersey Shore” star was bestowed with another honor: He was to DJ Britney Spears’ surprise gig in Las Vegas , which was taped for her MTV special “Britney Spears: I Am the Femme Fatale,” airing Sunday at 9 p.m. ET. “For me, I love Las Vegas, I love DJing. It’s my heart. I locked down this huge residency, which I always wanted, and now I find out Britney Spears is performing her new album at Rain while I’m DJing. I couldn’t ask for anything more,” Pauly D dished to MTV News last Friday. “I’m at Las Vegas now. What it means to DJ a concert like a Britney Spears concert or something like that, it’s an association with monsters like Britney Spears and it just legitimizes your career. And it’s just fun like being onstage with Britney Spears performing like she’s performing. I love it. I couldn’t ask for more.” Given that Pauly D plays a mix of popular music and more underground house, he admits that he doesn’t have to change his style up too much for a gig with Spears. “I keep up on music. I keep up on current music. I play everything. I’m open format,” he explained. “I play geared to the crowd, so I don’t prep my set. For this I go out there, I kind of wing it. I look at the crowd, I have an idea. I like to play the new stuff that’s hot. I feed off the crowd.” Pauly also explained the rules he has for his craft. “A DJ should not play the artist’s songs at her concert ’cause she has to perform these songs,” he said. “I’m not going to be playing any Britney before she performs; maybe after. I’ll let her perform, let her shine ’cause it’s her night.” The Vegas show is one of many highlights in the “I Am the Femme Fatale” special. Spears gives fans a taste of what it was like making the album, including behind-the-scenes footage of her in the studio with will.i.am and an intimate chat with Sway Calloway in which she opens up about her life and her career. By Jocelyn Vena Jamie Campbell Bower Photo: MTV News Jamie Campbell Bower has played with wizards and been one evil vampire, but now the British heartthrob is set to play King Arthur. The “Twilight” and “Harry Potter” star is now going to “Camelot,” in the Starz series named after the legendary literary location, which premieres Friday (April 1). Bower stopped by the MTV News offices the day his show premiered to share a big tease that will certainly persuade his admirers to watch: “You are going to see my bum cheeks, which is very nice,” he revealed, adding that he hopes no one will complain, “apart from my grandma.” “You will meet the characters that you know so well, but you will not see them in the same vein that you’ve seen them before. You will meet Arthur, who’s a young boy living a very comfortable existence and then torn from that and taken to Camelot. You will meet Merlin (played by Joseph Fiennes); he doesn’t have a pointy hat or a long white beard or a wand. And you will see the world that the show takes place in.” Bower plays the lead role in which so many thespians before him swung Excalibur. But he says the new show is a much more realistic take on the classic tale. “I suppose, being from England, I’ve grown up around the story most of my life. The Arthur and the Camelot story has been told many times, but I don’t think it’s been told in the same way,” he said. “We’re going for a reality and a humanism.” The story of Arthur and Camelot has been around for centuries, and it seems that, even in 2011, people don’t seem to tire of the classic tale. “I think, underneath it all, there’s that love story between Guinevere (played by Tamsin Egerton) and Arthur, and people are always drawn to a good love story, always drawn to that idea of love that cannot be, and that’s something that our show definitely has,” he explained. “I think people are very happy to be taken away from the mundane existence and thrown into this magical world.” Will you be tuning in to see Jamie Campbell Bower play King Arthur? ‘Hangover Part II’ Is ‘More Epic’ Than Original, Director Says

If the just-released trailer for “The Hangover Part II” is any indication of what moviegoers can expect come May 26, then it’s a whole lot of crazy antics. Yes, even crazier than before. The two-and-a-half-minute clip features the “Hangover” wolf pack — Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms, Zach Galifianakis and Justin Bartha — up to their old tricks (losing someone after a boozy night on the town, finding exotic animals in their bathroom) in a new setting (they’ve gone from wreaking havoc in Las Vegas to Thailand). So when MTV News caught up with “The Hangover Part II” director Todd Phillips at the 2011 CinemaCon in none other than Vegas, we had to ask if there were any way the sequel could live up to the wildly successful 2009 comedy. Phillips, who was also at the helm of the original (which brought in more than $467 million worldwide), said he believed “The Hangover Part II” is actually better than the first. “Audiences have really responded in the same way,” Phillips said of the reaction to the follow-up. “It’s just been out of this world. I think people are going to be really surprised.” In fact, Phillips himself gave the movie a stamp of approval that could sway even the most hard-core “Hangover” purists: “I think it’s a funnier film, and I think it’s a more epic film.” And while the 40-year-old writer/director said he still loves the original, he believes the sequel “just turned out to be a more satisfying film.” As if that weren’t enough, it seems the first film, which featured, among other things, drugging a Bengal tiger, a run-in with Mike Tyson and grown men getting tased by children, will be tame compared to the mishaps that occur in the latest. As Phillips explained: “We had less constraints on us — and I don’t mean money; just freedom to do whatever we wanted.” Do you think “The Hangover Part II” will be better than the original? By Jocelyn Vena Britney Spears performs “Till the World Ends” at Rain Nightclub in the Palms Las Vegas Photo: Roderick Trestrail Britney Spears gives fans an inside look at her life and the making of her latest album in the MTV special “Britney Spears: I Am the Femme Fatale.” MTV News has of course been tracking the release of her record, which finally dropped on Tuesday, but we were also on hand as she performed in Las Vegas at the Palms’ Rain nightclub. Fans will get to see the show — and much more — for themselves when the special airs on Sunday, April 3, at 9 p.m. ET on MTV. When we spoke to Spears’ longtime manager, Larry Rudolph, in Vegas, he told us Brit wanted to put on a spectacle for her fans. She wanted to take her first Femme Fatale live performance to Vegas because much like the city, Spears’ concerts have lots of sparkle, pyro and razzmatazz, he explained. “We chose this place; we chose the Palms because the Palms is where Britney has so much history,” he said. “We performed here with the Britney album, we did a similar thing. We’re doing this eight years later now and we’re doing it for the fans.” Rudolph stressed that Spears has one main goal: to entertain her fans in the Femme Fatale era. “For her, it was really important to do it for the fans the first time she was out there,” he explained. “To do it here in Las Vegas, where everything is bigger and everything is more exciting and the fans are here for her, this was the place to do it. “I want them to know — when the fans watch this — I want them to know that Britney is back and better than ever, not that she’s ever gone anywhere,” he continued. “But she’s back and she’s better than ever.” Don’t miss “Britney Spears: I Am the Femme Fatale” on Sunday, April 3, at 9 p.m. ET on MTV. Katy Perry’s ‘E.T.’ Video Look Inspired By Jellyfish, Stylist Says

By Jocelyn Vena Katy Perry in her “E.T.” music video Photo: Capitol Katy Perry leaves Candyfornia for outer space in her latest video, “E.T.” The otherworldly clip follows an alien woman played by the Teenage Dream singer as she falls to a planet to find her lost extraterrestrial lover. While fans are used to seeing Perry in dresses made from cupcakes and cotton candy, this time around she sports flowing gowns, metal body armor and lots of intricate makeup. Stylist Carol Beadle, who worked with director Floria Sigismondi on the style for the video, explained to MTV News that she wanted to take things to a more “avant-garde” level in the clip. “I just wanted [Katy] to look really odd, unreal if we could, but still fashionable,” she said. “I was looking at jellyfishes and amoebas; those words were constantly used and we wanted it to look like a flash of an amoeba and then it coming to life,” Beadle explained about the video’s fashion inspiration. “It’s like falling to the sky and the amoeba brought in the color palette and I wanted to hit it with a bit of color, so that it would pop. But to make it look 2011, it has to have a context and a reference point.” While Beadle kept Perry in mind when thinking up looks for the video, she also wanted to make sure that the fashions would fit the clip’s themes and story. “I tried to see her body type and her personality and how she’s perceived but, really, the main focus was on the director and I and making the story work and making her the lead,” she said. “I designed her first outfit and last outfit,” Beadle continued, adding about the flowing red dress Perry is first seen wearing, as she falls from space to the planet where her lover waits for her, “We wanted her to look like she was on fire and falling from the sky.” Soon the red dress becomes this “one massive white piece” by Viktor & Rolf, which, Beadle said, was “one of the most interesting pieces from the runway.” Perry’s next look is a flowing gown combined with metal pieces. “I built all the metal,” Beadle revealed. “All the skirts and stuff were designed and built by me.” While Perry went spacey glam in the video, her “E.T.” collaborator Kanye West kept his look decidedly Yeezy. “I went and talked to him and went through his things and his stylist had gone shopping,” Beadle said. “I’ve worked with him before [on ‘Love Lockdown’]. And when she was putting down the tracks that made the cut for her latest release, the dance-floor-friendly Femme Fatale , Spears reveals what she needed to get into the mood. “I love vanilla candles … and I love my tea,” she explains in “Britney Spears: I Am the Femme Fatale.” “My assistant always has some hot tea, little things like that just to make me feel at ease and comfortable, just girly things.” In the special, Spears is filmed getting some of that beloved tea with her assistant, and later she hits the studio with “Big Fat Bass” producer will.i.am, who shows her the final cut of the booming track. “I did some tweaking to the ‘Big Fat Bass’: The bass is even bigger,” he tells her as she dances along to the song, which eventually is featured in her live show at Rain Nightclub at the Palms Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. The special is a mixture of behind-the-scenes footage of the singer as she wraps up production on her album, which dropped this week, as well as an inside look at her life and fans. In addition, those who couldn’t make Spears’ recent Vegas show will get to see her as she takes the stage in her latest pop incarnation. Ke$ha To Appear On Nick’s ‘Victorious’

Ke$ha Photo: Fotonoticias/ Getty Images Ke$ha will make an appearance on the hit Nickelodeon series “Victorious.” And while the role won’t have the pop singer stretching her acting muscle too much — she’ll be playing herself — someone else in the Sebert (that’s her real last name) clan also is getting in on the action. Ke$ha will be joined on the episode of the sitcom by her little brother, Louie. The plot will revolve around Tori — played by the show’s star, Victoria Justice — and her pals trying to win a contest to go to a Ke$ha concert. The gang must piece together golden tickets in order to win their chance to see the “Blow” singer in a private gig. It seems that 11-year-old Louie provides the winning piece so that they can watch the glittered one perform the aforementioned track. “It’s a private concert, and yeah, I will say that the costumes are awesome and there’s definitely lots of glitter,” Justice told EW.com, which first reported on the episode. “It was really fun to film. It’s the first time on my show that we’ve had a successful radio artist perform on the show. Ke$ha’s kind of edgier, and I think that it’s cool to bring that element to the show.” “Victorious” made its big debut last spring. When MTV News caught up with Justice at that time, the teen actress admitted that the show’s fun vibe made it possible for anything to happen. “I play a girl named Tori Vega and she’s kind of suddenly accepted to this performance arts high school, and from there it’s her dealing with all these crazy characters that go there and normal teen problems, like trying to fit in and cute boys,” Justice explained. “I also get to perform original music and sing and dance. By James Montgomery, with reporting by Sway Calloway Katy Perry Photo: MTV News Katy Perry has already said that when she was writing songs for her Teenage Dream album, her goal was to “make a different ‘movie’ for each song.” So it’s ironic that her latest single, “E.T.,” was actually meant for a group who knows a thing or two about movies … and they’ve got the Academy Award to prove it. “I’ll tell you, it’s funny … this song, I remember writing with Max Martin and Dr. Luke, and there’s this producer they wrote with, named Ammo as well, and they were just showing me different samples of songs or tracks or beats, and they accidentally pulled up this beat, and it was for Three 6 Mafia,” Perry told MTV News. “I heard it and I always knew I wanted to write this futuristic, alienistic song, and they pulled it up and I was like, ‘Wait, I can wrap my head around this. I know this seems like a long shot, but I think I have the perfect material to put on top of this sound.’ And I did, and it really worked out perfectly.” So if you’re one of those Katy fans who’s a bit mystified by the abrupt change of pace of “E.T.” — and its equally left-of-center video — well, then you can sort of understand why: Deep down, it’s actually a Three 6 Mafia track. “It’s a whole different vibe for me. It’s kind of a bit harder, it does have that urban feel underneath it. I think that’s why Kanye added even another layer on top of it,” Perry explained. “And it has … amazing … sonics — I mean, there’s so much to it, there’s a lot in the song if you really put your headphones on and sink into the song.” And that’s just part of what drew Perry to the track in the first place. After all, on Teenage Dream, she set out to make movies … and though it may confound some of her fans, “E.T.” is perhaps the most wonderfully odd movie she’s ever made. And she knows it. “Even teasing people with different images from ‘E.T.,’ people are so perplexed, ” she laughed. “They’re like, ‘Katy Perry, you’re supposed to be Betty Boop! You’re supposed to be wearing pink!’ It’s exciting to be able to push my audience, to be like, ‘There’s always more, I’ve got all of this hidden up my sleeve that I’ve really longed to show people.'” What did you think of Katy’s new video?
