Michael Jackson Estate Rakes In $310 Million To Date

Singer left behind more than $400 million in debt. Michael Jackson Photo: Time Life Pictures/DMI/Time Life Pictures/Getty Im Between album sales, movie profits, licensing arrangements and lucrative deals for Cirque du Soleil shows, the estate of late King of Pop Michael Jackson has raked in more than $300 million since the singer’s shocking death in June 2009. According to TMZ , legal documents released on Thursday reveal that executors of MJ’s estate have managed to make a major dent in the more than $400 million in debt that Jackson owed at the time of his death. The first accounting from the executors shows that they have already spent around $159 million paying back various debts, income taxes and other expenses, which include providing support for the pop star’s mother, Katherine Jackson, as well as his three young children. “Although there remain unresolved creditor claims, pending litigation and additional challenging business, tax and legal issues, and the estate is not yet in a condition to be closed, the executors have made substantial progress in reducing the estate’s debt,” the documents state, according to a Reuters report. Two of Jackson’s longtime confidants, attorney John Branca and music executive John McClain, were named as administrators in a will sign by the pop icon. In addition to paying to make “substantial improvements” to the Jackson family’s Havenhurst estate in Encino, California, the executors also spent an undetermined amount of money on “last illness and funeral and memorial service expenses.” Those costs included a $900,000 payment to the Forest Lawn Memorial cemetery where Jackson is buried and $35,000 on expenses described as “costume for memorial.” TMZ reported that not only did the famously cash-strapped Jackson have more than $400 million in debut, but his estate also owed more than $40 million to concert promoter AEG tied to the scuttled This Is It Tour, for which MJ was rehearsing when he died unexpectedly. They’ve also paid $27.2 million in taxes and $4 million in mortgage payments on Jackson’s properties. Despite the solid sales of the Michael album and millions of units of the singer’s back catalog being sold, as well as the box office of the “This Is It” movie and DVD sales, the estate is not nearly out of the woods. TMZ noted that the administrators have received more than 65 creditors’ claims, some of which are subject to “extremely high” interest rates, and there are several outstanding lawsuits against the estate in several countries. Arcade Fire And Spike Jonze Debut ‘Scenes From The Suburbs’ In Berlin

30-minute film premiered at Berlin Film Festival this week. By Eric Ditzian The Arcade Fire’s Win Butler Photo: Mark Metcalfe/ Getty Images Arcade Fire has showed off snippets of their Spike Jonze-directed short film, “Scenes from the Suburbs,” on oversize screens during their summer tour shows and in a five-minute music video in November. Finally, this week, the band got to display the full 30-minute film at the Berlin Film Festival, which frontman Win Butler hopes will become part of the group’s “visual legacy,” according to The Hollywood Reporter . “So that 30 years from now, when a computer virus crashed all the computers, and people have to look at DVDs to see what life was like in the early 2000s, there is some record of what we were thinking visually,” he explained at the festival. “And we didn’t want that to get completely lost just because of the times that we live in.” The short continues the band’s exploration of their experiences growing up within the often staid confines of the suburbs, which, as their tour collaborator Terry Gilliam has told us, is a “place that if you’re creative, you just need to get away from.” The film, however, spins suburban life into an impressionistic portrait of a group of teens living in an alternate reality where different towns go to war against one another. “You start from a feeling and it’s not necessarily the plot points of a song,” Butler said. “To me the film is very much about trying to talk about the relationships and the feelings of that age.” “We were trying to show the emotion and the emotional links without necessarily getting deep into the plot,” he added, citing influences ranging from Gilliam’s films to B movies. “It’s inspired by watching the first half of films and not having to figure out how to resolve them.” The Berlin premiere capped off a pretty stellar week for Arcade Fire. On Sunday, the band pulled off a shocking Album of the Year upset at the Grammys , then quickly jetted to London for the Brit Awards, winning Best International Album and Best International Group . And yet, for all this musical success, Butler suggested that perhaps a visual medium is where the group’s true artistic talents lie. “I think we would have been a band of moviemakers if making movies wasn’t 140 times more expensive than making records,” he said. Waka Flocka Flame Shooting Investigation Continues

Rapper tweets, ‘nothing is wrong with my health,’ following the incident. By Gil Kaufman Waka Flocka Flame Photo: MTV News Rapper Waka Flocka Flame escaped unhurt from a gun battle that erupted outside his tour bus in Charlotte, North Carolina, on Wednesday, and police are still on the hunt for the assailants. TMZ reported that Waka (born Juaquin Malphurs) was outside his bus when two cars pulled up next to it in the parking lot of Car Stereo Warehouse and opened fire, with four shots hitting the bus. According to an eyewitness, Waka’s security team shot back at the cars and struck at least one of them. Waka, 24, was not hurt in the incident, but was detained by police, who questioned him and three other men after the shoot-out. The rapper tweeted to his followers a short time later, writing “To my fans N world, I’m good, nothing is wrong with my health … See y’all in Cali for all-star #im1realassperson.” The Charlotte Observer reported that the shooting occurred around 4 p.m. as the “No Hands” MC was talking to fans and having his picture taken with them while the stereo on his bus was getting an upgrade. One person was shot in the shoulder, though police have not identified who that victim is. At press time, authorities did not have a motive for the shooting and were reviewing video surveillance recordings from outside the store for clues, but had not charged anyone in the incident. A spokesperson for the Charlotte Police Department could not be reached for comment at press time and the rapper’s spokesperson had not yet returned requests for comment. This isn’t the first time Waka ‘s been involved in gunfire. In January 2010 the rapper was shot in the arm while fighting at a carwash in Georgia over his jewelry. The Atlanta MC turned himself in last month following a December raid at his home that also netted mentor Gucci Mane. He was booked on charges including possession of marijuana and hydrocodone, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and violation of probation for driving on a suspended license. Lady Gaga Wears Condom-Inspired Outfit On ‘Good Morning America’

‘Born This Way’ singer promotes AIDS awareness and MAC lipstick on Thursday’s show. By Gil Kaufman Lady Gaga on “Good Morning America” on Thursday Photo: ABC You might have done a double take on Thursday morning (February 17) if you were having your morning coffee while watching “Good Morning America.” Yes, that was Lady Gaga up bright and early, and yes, she did say she was wearing a “latex-condom-inspired outfit” as part of her bid to promote AIDS awareness. Four days after her instantly legendary entrance at the Grammy Awards in an egg-shaped vessel , the singer donned a flesh-colored sheath dress with matching shoes and a sculptural off-white hat to talk with “GMA” host Robin Roberts. “MAC has been fighting for identity and for passion and love and protection for so long,” said Gaga of the MAC brand of cosmetics, which she said raised $34 million last year through its Viva Glam lipstick brand for HIV/AIDS-related causes, some of it courtesy of an ad campaign starring Gaga and singer Cyndi Lauper. The goal this year, said Gaga, again sporting the alien-inspired facial ridges that seem to be part of her latest persona, was to raise $50 million. She then gave Roberts a sample of the taupe lipstick and lip glass that she designed for MAC, which gives 100 percent of Viva Glam proceeds to AIDS/HIV prevention. “I want to get people started at home at a younger age with their children talking about HIV, talking about AIDS, talking about safe sex,” she explained. “My mother talked to me about sex at a young age, and she always taught me to be self-aware — that’s in my new song, ‘Born This Way.’ I say ‘My momma told me when I was young …’ My first experience with my mother that I remember mostly was when she would put her lipstick on in the morning and she would talk to me about life.” The bottom line, self-described activist and social-justice fighter Gaga said, was to speak to the people in your life about safe sex in order to help prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS. Gaga also talked about her “genuine shock” at hearing her name called at the Grammys on Sunday night when she won the Best Female Pop Vocal Performance award for “Bad Romance.” “I so genuinely did not think I was going to win,” she said. “I really did, and I was so shocked and so honored and so humbled. And it was a very joyous day to sing ‘Born This Way’ for the first time.” Staying on message, Gaga then tied in the theme of the song with her MAC line, saying it is shame and stigma around the difficulty of talking to children about sex and AIDS that makes people not protect themselves. ” ‘Born This Way’ is about self love, and MAC AIDS Fund is about self love. … It is so much bigger than me,” she said. “It’s not about me at all. The song, when I wrote it, I just knew it was destined to reach so many people all over the world. The most humbling this for me this past weekend is watching the fans harness onto the record and … really enjoying the music and feeing uplifted and a sense of positivity.” Related Photos Lady Gaga’s Grammy Night The Evolution Of: Lady Gaga Related Artists Lady Gaga
