Critical darlings Arcade Fire nabbed the top prize for Album of the Year at the 53rd annual Grammy Awards on Sunday night. The Canadian indie rock group’s The Suburbs bested major label albums from megastars Eminem, Katy Perry and Lady Gaga, whose media campaigns were as relentless as their radio hits were ubiquitous. The category was rounded out by Lady Antebellum , huge stars in the world of country and multiple Grammy nominees in their own right. Check out photos of Arcade Fire’s performance and more! Arcade Fire’s Album of the Year win was something of an upset, although MTV News’ own James Montgomery did sort of call it for them. The band’s Grammy heat was part of a wave that showed how much traction indie releases have gained with Grammy voters in recent years. The Suburbs was released by Merge Records, the independent label based in Durham, North Carolina, that has been home to underground acts like Lou Barlow, The Clientele, Superchunk and Neutral Milk Hotel. In addition to performing, Arcade Fire were up for three Grammys this year. On Sunday night in Los Angeles, groups like Mumford & Sons, Florence and the Machine, Black Keys, Vampire Weekend, Band of Horses and Broken Bells all joined Arcade Fire in battle with more mainstream nominees like Justin Bieber and Eminem. The Suburbs has sold roughly 400,000 copies, making it a smash for an indie label, particularly in the age of downloading. Arcade Fire’s Funeral (2005) and Neon Bible (2008) were both nominated for Best Alternative Music Album. The Montreal, Canada-based multi-instrumental band is led by husband-and-wife team Win Butler and R

By Kara Warner Snooki and Nicki Minaj Photo: MTV News As any fan of “Jersey Shore” can attest, Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi is a walking highlight reel. The words and quotes that emit from the pint-size, pouf-wearing, self-proclaimed guidette are so unpredictable and entertaining, who else would we enlist to co-host our Grammy red-carpet live stream? Lucky for MTV News and all our viewers, Snooki did not disappoint. From philosophizing about Gaga’s arrival in an egg to bonding with Drake’s mom and talking hair poufs with Nicki Minaj , our “Jersey Shore” girl did us proud. Here are a few more of Snooki’s highlights. First, there was a flirty encounter with Bruno Mars. “Oh yeah that’s hot, I love it,” Snooki told Mars, after he demonstrated some fist-pumping dance moves. “You look good tonight, I’m just sayin’.” “Hit me up when the cameras aren’t on, you know what I’m saying?” Mars said. “You and me could just kick it.” Snooki’s response? A surprised/indecisive “Meep.” Next up, there was Gaga’s entrance. “Is that an egg?” she asked co-host Sway Calloway and then waved and shouted out, “Gaga, I love you!” as the egg passed by. “Sway is actually a gorilla juicehead,” Snooki told “Glee” star Matthew Morrison, while explaining the finer points of “GTL” and the guido lifestyle. “A ‘G.A.H.,’ ” an amused Morrison added about Sway. “A ‘Guido at Heart.’ ” In addition to naming names, categorizing people and making plans with her interviewees, Snooki also managed to “go there,” in terms of asking very pointed — and sometimes very personal — questions. Her chat with superstar Drake and his mom was a prime example. “Did you and Rihanna smush?” she asked Drake of his past romantic encounters with his “What’s My Name” co-star. “Oh, goodness,” a dumbstruck Drake responded. “Ah … this is just, ah … ” he trailed off. “Let’s snog,” Jay Sean offered (a British slang term for make out or kiss). “Snug?” Snooki asked. “No, snog. S-N-O-G,” Sean explained, even though it was clear Snooki didn’t know what he was talking about. “Snug?” she asked again. “Does that mean smush?” Another doozy occurred with Jennifer Lopez and her husband Marc Anthony. “You’re f—ing hot in person,” she told J.Lo. And finally, a sweet little encounter with Nicki Minaj. “Is this your real hair?” Snooki asked while reaching up to touch Minaj’s “Bride of Frankenstein”-inspired look. “Snooks,” Minaj responded, sounding mildly offended. “What do you mean, ‘Is this my real hair?’ ” “I’m jealous,” Snooki answered. “Oh. Bonnaroo 2011 Headlined By Eminem, Lil Wayne, Arcade Fire

By James Montgomery Eminem Photo: Kevin Mazur/ WireImage On Tuesday (February 15), organizers announced the lineup for the 2011 Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival, set for June 9-12 in Manchester, Tennessee. And, boy, it’s going to be interesting to hear the purists’ take on this year’s bill. Browse photos of the 2011 Bonnaroo performers . Unlike earlier, decidedly crunchy editions of the fest, the 2011 lineup is topped by two of the hugest hip-hop acts in the business — Eminem and Lil Wayne — along with newly crowned Grammy champs Arcade Fire and the Black Keys. Other acts on the bill include Mumford & Sons, the Strokes, the Decemberists, Florence and the Machine, Big Boi, Wiz Khalifa and Robyn. Of course, there are still some nods to Bonnaroo’s roots: Fest vets Widespread Panic return once again, as do My Morning Jacket and the String Cheese Incident. Also doing their part for the traditionalists out there are reunited legends Buffalo Springfield (in their only festival performance), Robert Plant and the Band of Joy, and Dr. John and the Original Meters, who will perform their 1974 album Desitively Bonnaroo, from which the festival took its name. As in previous years, there will be an epic super-jam, this one organized by Dan Auerbach of the Black Keys and Dr. John. Other artists set to appear at the 10th annual Bonnaroo include Ray LaMontagne, Iron and Wine, Girl Talk, Primus, Explosions in the Sky, Deerhunter, the Walkmen, Sleigh Bells and Smith Westerns. All in all, some 150 bands will perform at this year’s fest. Tickets for Bonnaroo 2011 go on sale Saturday, February 19 at 12 p.m. ET through the festival’s official website . Kanye West Joins Katy Perry On ‘E.T.’

By Jocelyn Vena Kanye West and Katy Perry Photo: EMI In her next single from Teenage Dream, “E.T.,” Katy Perry sings about falling in love with an alien to a spacey dance track. And unlike in the version on the album, the radio version features the extraterrestrial stylings of Kanye West. The rapper not only makes a cameo on the song, but he will also appear in the video alongside the California Gurl. The video was shot by “The Runaways” director Floria Sigismondi , who is known for putting her dark, feminine spin on clips for artists like Christina Aguilera, Marilyn Manson and the White Stripes. Little else is known about West’s contribution to the song and the video, but in a photo released by Perry’s label, Kanye appears in regular street clothes while Perry looks like perhaps she’s playing the alien character she sings about in the song — complete with pastel-colored makeup and giant braided headpiece. Lady Gaga Talks Grammy ‘Vessel,’ Born This Way Details

Mother Monster teases in a radio interview that ‘Born This Way’ is ‘just the beginning of this album.’ By Jocelyn Vena Lady gaga arrives at the 2011 Grammys on Sunday Photo: MTV News Lady Gaga called in to Ryan Seacrest’s radio show on Tuesday morning (February 15) and opened up about the “Born This Way” “roller coaster” she finds herself on these days. She also talked about that now-famous egg-like “vessel” in which she arrived to the Grammys on Sunday. “Only I would pull up to an awards show in a giant industrial-sized truck,” she explained about the vehicle that brought her and her unusual container to the big event. “I was in [the vessel] for about 72 hours and it was a very creative experience and it was time for me to prepare and really think about the meaning of the song. I really wanted to be born onstage.” Gaga finally emerged from her egg thingy when she took the stage at the Grammys to perform her new single live for the first time. “It was such a magical moment. I can’t even say enough about the joy that I felt singing ‘Born This Way’ on that stage,” she gushed. “We were just so emotional and so excited and I put so much hard work into creating the performance, designing it. I really have spent a tremendous amount of time dancing and working on becoming a better dancer … It’s important to me, if I want to someday be remembered as a great, great artist, I think I have to do what all the greats did — I’ve got to sing and dance live at the same time.” As for her unusual Whitney Houston shout-out during the ceremony, Gaga explains that it was a thank-you a long time in the making. “I can’t tell you how much I listened to her growing up,” she explained. “She was my vocal idol for so many years. I thought of her voice when I wrote [‘Born This Way’], because she’s just such an incredible singer. I sort of planned to thank her a long time ago, at some point. I said, ‘If I ever win a Grammy I’m gonna thank Whitney’ … so I did.” During the chat with Seacrest, Gaga also gave more details about her album, Born This Way , which comes out May 23. “The next single is called ‘Judas,’ ” she confirmed ( Vogue originally reported the news about this track, which was produced by RedOne ). “And that will be out a couple weeks before the album.” As for the LP as a whole, the singer said, “It’s eclectic. I wouldn’t tell everyone to expect lots of the same kind of songs like ‘Born This Way.’ I explore lots of different genres in tandem with dance music and electronic music and industrial music. I have expanded even further in that area, and I’m so very proud of it.” Later on the conversation, Gaga reiterated, “The great news is ‘Born This Way’ is just the beginning of this album. It’s certainly not even the biggest hit on the album. You have to hear the rest of the record.
