Lady Gaga’s Best Awards-Show Arrivals: From Kermit To The Egg

Gaga has always graced red carpets in completely over-the-top ways. By Jocelyn Vena Lady Gaga arrives at the Grammy Awards on Sunday Photo: Jason Merritt/Getty Images Lady Gaga arrived at the Grammy Awards red carpet on Sunday night in an egg designed by powerhouse fashion houses Hussein Chalayan and House of Mugler. And we’d expect nothing less from Gaga, who has a long list of unusual and over-the-top awards show entrances in her short career. Check out photos of Lady Gaga’s most memorable entrances . Back in September, Gaga hit the white carpet of the 2010 VMAs in gown designed by late friend Alexander McQueen and was joined by several servicemen and women who had been discharged from the U.S. Air Force and Army for being openly gay or bisexual. “These soldiers that are with me today have all been discharged from the Air Force or Army, or opted to leave on their own. … Their stories are truly inspiring, and in my opinion — and as so many young people around the world believe — ‘don’t ask, don’t tell’ is wrong, it’s sick, it’s immoral,” she explained of her choice to include them in her appearance. Later in the night she appeared in the press room wearing the now-famous meat dress and pointed out its connection to her earlier companions. “If we don’t stand up for what we believe in and if we don’t fight for our rights, pretty soon we’re going to have as much rights as the meat on our own bones,” Gaga explained . “And I am not a piece of meat.” At last year’s Grammy Awards , Gaga was out-of-this world in a sparkly lavender and silver dress that looked like a planet with orbiting rings. What did the spacey outfit mean? “The series of pieces Mr. Armani created for me are truly iconic; they represent not only beautiful fashion, but my spirit and essence as an artist,” she said. “Mr. Armani is a fashion legend, and tonight would not have been the same without his touch, and his wonderful team.” Gaga, who once wore a dress made of Kermit the Frogs, arrived at the 2009 VMAs with Kermit himself as her date for the big show. It was the first time that Gaga had created such a major spectacle for herself at an awards show. “He’s been a really good date,” Gaga joked to MTV News. “It’s our first date, but we’ve been eyeing each other for a while.” And on Sunday night, though she didn’t do interviews as her egg was being carried into the Staples Center, the art piece spoke for itself. “She’s born this way, so maybe she’s being born again!” MTV News red-carpet correspondent Snooki noted after Gaga waved to her from inside her shell. Skylar Grey Breaks Out With Dre, Eminem Grammy Performance

Singer is in spotlight after haunting rendition of chorus on ‘I Need a Doctor.’ By Aly Semigran Skylar Grey at the 2011 Grammy Awards Photo: Jason Merrit/ Getty Images Many Grammy viewers might have asked themselves the same question several times during Sunday night’s ceremony: Who was that? In addition to Best New Artist winner Esperanza Spalding , another woman who hit the stage of the 53rd Annual Grammy Awards had plenty of viewers wondering who she was: first-time nominee and performer Skylar Grey, who took to the stage with Eminem and Dr. Dre during their intense set . As it turns out, the Wisconsin-born Grey, whose real name is Holly Brook Hafermann, already has a long hip-hop r

Paramore Say New Tour Will Be A ‘Big Party’

Hayley Williams tells MTV News newly configured band is ‘excited’ to kick off South America mini-tour. By Aly Semigran Paramore at the Grammy Awards on Sunday Photo: John Shearer Don’t cry for Paramore , Argentina. Although the pop-rock band — now two members short since the departure of Josh and Zac Farro — went home empty-handed at Sunday’s 53rd Annual Grammy Awards , they’ve got plenty to look forward to. MTV News caught up with crimson-haired lead singer Hayley Williams and the remaining band members on the Grammy red carpet and they talked about their upcoming tour in South America, which will include stops in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and Lima, Peru. As it turns out, the group was wasting no time between the ceremony and hitting the road. “We leave tomorrow,” Williams told us. “We’re so excited.” The 22-year-old frontwoman revealed it’s been nearly three years since Paramore performed in South America and they plan to make up for lost time. Beginning in Brazil on February 16 and concluding on March 6 in San Juan, Puerto Rico, the chart-topping rockers will play 11 shows as part of the upcoming mini-tour that Williams described as “a big party.” Guitarist Taylor York added that he was confident in how the newly configured group will fare on the road. “I don’t think we’re going to skip a beat, if anything we’ll be better,” York said. Williams also revealed that South American fans would get to experience the kind of show they’ve staged elsewhere around the globe. “It’s very similar to the Honda Civic Tour, which we …did in America, [and] we took it to Australia and England,” she explained. “So we’re just kind of giving them what they haven’t seen yet.” The tour, which follows the release of their platinum-selling Brand New Eyes album, will also mark “longest set we’ve ever put together,” according to Williams. Snooki And Bruno Mars Flirt At The Grammys

‘I got love for Snooki. I want the world to know that,’ the ‘Just the Way You Are’ singer announces on the red carpet. By Eric Ditzian Bruno Mars at the 2011 Grammy Awards Photo: Jason Merrit/ Getty Images Love was in the air on the pre-Valentine’s Day red carpet at the 53rd Grammy Awards on Sunday night, and MTV News guest correspondent Snooki was at the center of the action. The “Jersey Shore” star asked Drake to serenade her, wondered if Jay Sean would offer to smush her and asked Bruno Mars if they might ever end up in a relationship together. Judging by Mars’ reaction, he just might be down, because when the “Just the Way You Are” singer stopped to chat with Snooki, the two couldn’t quit paying tribute to each other. “I’m very, very excited [by] everything that you’re doing,” she told him. “You’re probably the greatest songwriter I’ve ever seen. And I’m not lying.” Mars then announced to the camera, “I got love for Snooki. I want the world to know that.” The pint-sized party girl responded by saying, “Yay! Can you see us as a couple?” And then the two went into some impromptu fist-pumping, which is almost grounds for legal marriage in Seaside Heights. At the Staples Center in Los Angeles, though, Mars already had enough on his mind. He was up for seven nominations, including Best Rap Song (“Nothin’ on You”), Song of the Year (“F— You”) and Record of the Year (“Nothin’ on You”). By the end of the night, though, he only came out on top in one category: Best Male Pop Vocal Performance for “Just the Way You Are.” But at least for a few minutes, the singer/songwriter was able to wipe away any nervous energy about the impending awards and throw his hand in the air alongside Snooki. “Oh yeah, that’s hot. I love it,” she said. “You look good tonight. Just sayin’.” Snooki then asked Mars what he was doing after the big show, and he responded, “I don’t know. Why don’t you hit me up when the cameras are gone, you know what I’m saying? You could just kick it.” What do you think about a Snooki-Bruno Mars hook-up? Share your opinions in the comments. Valentine’s Day Love Gurus Trey Songz, Lloyd Dole Out Tips

MTV News caught up with two of the smoothest guys in the R&B game for advice on how to lay it down. By Rebecca Thomas Trey Songz Photo: MTV News Naked movie nights, surprise candelight dinners and a heart-shaped box of … honesty. Trey Songz and Lloyd, card-carrying members of the R&B smooth dudes club, have some interesting ideas about how to lay it down on the most romantic day of the year. So for the millions of American men who woke up on Monday morning (February 14) seeing red — roses and lacy lingerie, that is — and suffering the high-expectations performance anxiety of Valentine’s Day, you’re in luck! MTV News caught up with the Love Faces tourmates just as the pre-holiday weekend kicked off and asked them for their foolproof guide to making your significant other “say aah.” While Trey sagely warned against letting the holiday “sneak up on you” (“you know, Valentine’s, you gotta prepare for that, you gotta be ready “), he also said that it doesn’t take a lot to score high marks. “If it’s genuine, you’ll go out of your way to make sure that person feels good. And if you’re a genuine person, I don’t think money or how much someone can buy you can make you feel that way,” he told us. Like the “I Invented Sex” singer, Lloyd goes for inventiveness over excess when making plans. He went on to detail his idea of a flawless V-Day. “A perfect Valentine’s Day? Anytime that we can wear the least amount of clothes as possible, it’s a great day for me. So if we can just find somewhere and be naked,” or as the New Orleans native pronounced it, nekkid, “for long periods of time: eat nekkid, cook nekkid, watch movies nekkid, obviously take

Arcade Fire Rock Out For Grammy Finale Performances

Album of the Year winners transform stage into BMX skate park on indie band’s big night. By Aly Semigran Arcade Fire perform at 2011 Grammy Awards Photo: Getty Images Just two days after their anti-Grammy party in Los Angeles, the Arcade Fire shifted gears and played for a worldwide audience on the Grammy stage on Sunday night (February 13). Check out photos of Arcade Fire’s performance and more! The indie darlings not only performed twice during the ceremony, they also walked away with the Album of the Year award for their sweeping chart-topper The Suburbs. “Forgetting Sarah Marshall” star Jason Segel introduced the Montreal natives, who were making their first-ever Grammy appearance. They kicked things off with their raucous, rolling “Month of May.” The eight-member group, led by lead singer Win Butler, welcomed a gaggle of BMX riders — some sporting POV cameras to capture the broadcast for fans — to the Grammy stage, which was then transformed into something of a rock-and-roll skate park. The Arcade Fire gave a loud, but not overly flashy performance that was a fitting end to an evening chock-full of big numbers. But as it turned out, the song was a precursor to an even bigger moment. Minutes after the band’s performance of the arena-ready “Month of May,” Kris Kristofferson and Barbra Streisand appeared onstage to announce the evening’s final and most prestigious award: Album of the Year. Besting mainstream acts Eminem, Lady Antebellum, Lady Gaga and Katy Perry, a visibly stunned Arcade Fire emerged from backstage to accept the award, pulling off one of the evening’s biggest upsets. “What the hell!” an amazed Butler said. Apparently the singer’s excitement got the best of him, as he was bleeped presumably for using strong language later on in his acceptance speech. The newly anointed Grammy winner thanked the crowd and announced, “We’re going to go play another song, ’cause we like music!” A man of his word, Butler and his musical ensemble immediately took to their bevy of instruments — Butler placed their Grammy on one of the amps — and played again. Finally, Butler thanked his parents and told the Grammy audience they could exit to the next tune as they began the toe-tapping, head-bobbing Suburbs single “Ready to Start.” In spite of his instructions to the crowd, the attendees seemed happy to stick around for the infectious number. Esperanza Spalding Calls Best New Artist Grammy Win ‘Unexpected’

‘I really didn’t think it was going to be me,’ jazz singer/bassist tells MTV News of topping Justin Bieber and Drake for coveted award. By Kara Warner with reporting by Sway Calloway Esperanza Spalding wins Best New Artist at the 2011 Grammys Photo: Getty Images Who would’ve thought that a young jazz bassist would come in and steal the Best New Artist Grammy out from under the likes of Justin Bieber, Florence and the Machine and Drake? Not too many people, that’s for sure. In fact, gambling mavens Ladbrokes and Bodog placed the odds of Esperanza Spalding winning the award at an unlikely 20-to-1 . Check out photos of Esperanza Spalding’s big win and more! But she did it, and she is the first jazz artist ever to do so. “I really didn’t think it was going to be me,” a delighted Spalding told MTV News after her win. “I was one of those [surprised] people. … It was so unexpected, that’s the truth. I’m grateful to all my people in my big musical family that have given me so much support and help over the years,” Spalding gushed. “I don’t really think this is for me; it’s for all of us. And I wish they could all be here to put one finger on this with me.” Since we’re still reeling over the fact that Spalding overcame the tsunami of popularity currently surrounding her fellow nominees, it’s time to take a closer look at this mega underdog-turned-big winner. The 26-year-old Portland, Oregon, native discovered music at an early age, teaching herself to play the violin at age 5 and playing with the Chamber Music Society of Oregon. She dabbled in the guitar, the oboe and cello before settling on the bass in high school. After putting in time in at both Portland State University and the prestigious Berklee College of Music on scholarships, she broke onto the jazz scene in a big way with her album Chamber Music Society. Though Spalding was primarily known in jazz circles, her Best New Artist Grammy will surely put her on the proverbial music map for a new group of fans. “I am a bassist, composer and singer,” Spalding explained to MTV News. “I guess that’s the easiest way to describe the music I do. You really just have to hear it. It’s rooted in jazz, but there’s a lot of stuff up in there. You just have to have a taste.” Not only that, but Spalding joined music legend Prince on his Welcome 2 America Tour . She’s also performed at the White House and was featured in an ad campaign for Banana Republic. What did you think of Esperanza’s win? Let us know in the comments! Selena Gomez ‘Very Excited’ About Eminem/ Dr. Dre Grammy Performance

‘I love Eminem. I’m a huge Eminem fan, so I’m very excited to see him,’ Gomez says. By Kara Warner Selena Gomez attends the 2011 Grammy Awards Photo: Getty Images For those clued in to the world of Selena Gomez, Disney Channel darling and star of “The Wizards of Waverly Place,” budding recording artist, and the current romantic interest of one Justin Bieber (or so we assume — they have yet to publicly acknowledge the fact that they’re dating, comments from co-stars and vacation photos aside), her attendance at tonight’s Grammy Awards ceremony might seem solely pegged to her Bieber connection and presenting the Best New Artist trophy. However, when MTV News caught up with Gomez on the red carpet, she revealed that she was most excited about a certain rapper from Detroit, not a teen sensation from Canada. Check out photos of Eminem’s Grammy performance and more! “I’m actually very excited about Dr. Dre and Eminem’ s performance ,” Gomez told MTV’s Sway during our live-stream broadcast. “I love Eminem. I’m a huge Eminem fan, so I’m very excited to see him.” Gomez added that her stepdad was equally excited for that performance (Dre’s first in about 10 years), in that he never wants to come with her to big events, but made an exception for Eminem tonight. When asked why she loves Eminem so, Gomez said it’s all about his swagger — or lack thereof. “For me, I think he’s so free within himself,” she explained. “Music is an awesome way to express yourself, but when you see him onstage and he comes to events like this, you never see him having to be all stiff and cool. He’s just in a hoodie, goes on and performs, and I love that.” Sway wondered aloud whether this means Gomez likes bad boys. “Sometimes, yeah,” she admitted with a smile. And what about an Eminem/Gomez musical collaboration? Would she be into that? “Oh gosh. Who would say no to that?” she said. “I don’t think I’m cool enough. I don’t have enough street cred for that.” For Grammy Awards winners list, analysis, interviews, fashion and more, stick with MTV News during the big show and beyond. When Snooki Met Nicki Minaj At The Grammys

‘Jersey Shore’ starlet and Young Money rapper become fast friends on the red carpet. By Eric Ditzian Snooki and Nicki Minaj Photo: MTV News Last year at the Grammys , Snooki held court on the red carpet as MTV News’ guest correspondent, sharing deeply odd and seriously hilarious chats with the likes of Justin Bieber (“Do you get a lot of, like, girls?”) and Katy Perry (“Did you really kiss a girl?”). Is it any surprise, then, that the “Jersey Shore” star once again found herself in some unlikely and amusing bonding sessions with some of the biggest names in the music business? Perhaps none of her red-carpet interviews was more entertaining than her lengthy convo with Nicki Minaj . They talked fashion, reality TV, awards-show craziness and, by the end, it was hard to tell which gal was more excited about the meeting. “Did you know that I’m obsessed with her?” Nicki said. Countered Snooki, “I’m obsessed with Nicki!” Things got started when Minaj — done up like a safari-inspired bride of Frankenstein — sauntered over, leading Snickers to wonder, “Is this your hair or no?” “Snooks? What, do you mean to dis my hair?” Nicki said. “I mean I’m jealous!” “OK, whatever! I wanted you to wear your pouf today so we could be matching.” “I did,” confessed Snooki, “but it deflated from the heat, you know what I mean?” And thus, a friendship was born. It was a long time in the making. Nicki made clear that she’s a big fan of “Jersey Shore,” referencing recent shenanigans on the show and revealing that she’s already made the acquaintance of one of Snooki’s pals. “Guess who I just spoke to? Pauly D,” she said. “He was basically saying if he could be my valentine, and I finally said yes.” “That’s cute!” said Snooki, who had even more effusive praise for Nicki’s over-the-top, animal print-heavy outfit. “I had to do some leopard because I’m ferocious,” Nicki said. Before she headed inside, the Pink Friday songstress paid the reality star one compliment Snooki is unlikely to forget. “I’m proud of you,” she said. “You’re doing your thing, and I’m excited.” What do you think of new BFFs Snooki and Nicki?
