Justin Bieber Vintage Video: Talking Ludacris, Drake On ‘Baby’ Set

Last year, Bieber denied any aspirations for a rap career. By Jocelyn Vena Justin Bieber on the set of his video for “Baby” Photo: MTV News A year ago, almost to the day, MTV News ran an interview with Justin Bieber in which the teen star said he had no plans to do any rapping. Cut to a year later, and Bieber has really stepped up his rap game, between his verse on Sean Kingston’s “Won’t Stop” and his Shawty Mane MC alter ego . When we caught up with the star on the bowling-alley video set for “Baby” last year, Bieber still seemed kind of green to the whole process but remained completely poised throughout the shoot. He opened up about his MC pals, sharing how he got Ludacris to join him on the song, which turned out to be his breakout hit. “Well, [Ludacris and I] both live in Atlanta,” Bieber said. “I met him a year prior to this, and we figured it was a perfect collaboration for him, so we invited him out to do it.” When asked if Luda offered him any advice, Bieber said, “No. I mean, he’s a rapper; he doesn’t sing.” And he seemed adamantly opposed when we asked if he had any rapping plans: “No. Not at all. Nope.” These days, Bieber’s MC rolodex has expanded even more, but back then, he was still flexing his swagga muscle by getting fellow Canadian Drake onboard to make a cameo in the video. “He’s just one of my good buddies. He’s here to hang out,” Bieber said, noting that he couldn’t confirm who else might appear on his not-yet-released My World 2.0. “You’ll have to see when it comes out in March.” On Friday, Justin Bieber’s 3-D documentary, “Never Say Never,” opens. The film takes a look at how the teen star worked to hit it big. MTV News has been chatting with him along the way, from the time he first burst on the scene in 2009 until now, as he embarks on a huge 2011 that will include a tour and more new music. Ashlee Simpson And Pete Wentz: Details Behind The Divorce

Insiders say the couple have ‘just grown apart.’ By Mawuse Ziegbe Ashlee Simpson and Pete Wentz in 2008 Photo: Gustavo Caballero/Getty Images Ashlee Simpson and Pete Wentz’s split may seem shocking to fans, but insiders close to the pair say there’s little drama behind the scenes. According to People, sources close to Simpson and Wentz have said the pop star and Fall Out Boy rocker aren’t mixing any emotional theatrics into their impending divorce. One person connected to the situation said the pair are riding out the breakup peacefully. Check out photos of the ex-couple throughout the years. “It’s very amicable. They’re on very friendly terms and speaking — it’s fine,” an insider said. “They’ve just grown apart. They’ve been growing apart for quite some time.” The source added that parenting their toddler remains their top priority. “It’s all about [their 2-year-old son] Bronx for them. They’re fantastic parents — Pete says she’s a great mom, and she says he’s a great father,” the insider said. “It’s about Bronx’s care and well-being and happiness for them.” Insiders have also echoed the “growing apart” reasoning to TMZ, adding that their respective careers — Simpson has largely eschewed the spotlight since 2008’s Bittersweet World, while Wentz has dabbled in fashion and piloted other musical projects — wedged them apart. “After Bronx was born, Ashlee made a conscious decision to get out of the business, but Pete’s heart was in music so he kept touring and that became a big issue in their relationship.” While insiders have maintained the split is drama-free, TMZ reports that Simpson left due to Wentz’s antics. “It’s really all about Pete’s erratic behavior,” the source said. “She really wanted out.” Publicly, the couple have been big on e-affection, gushing about each other on Twitter as recently as two days ago. “Dont forget 2 notice-when i look into the lil dudes eyes & smile, the way he loves. i realize @ashsimpsonwentz is a good moma + so much more,” Wentz tweeted Monday. Just last month Simpson doled out a sweet missive to her husband. “@petewentz I already miss your handsome face!” she wrote on January 19. Lil Wayne’s ‘6 Foot 7 Foot’ Video Premiere Postponed

Finishing touches are still being put on the clip, which was set to debut Thursday on MTV. By Jayson Rodriguez Lil Wayne Photo: MTV News Lil Wayne was set to premiere the video for “6 Foot 7 Foot” on MTV this Thursday at 8 p.m. ET during the special presentation “MTV First: Lil Wayne,” but the highly anticipated debut has been postponed as the finishing touches are being put on the video. To tide you over until the premiere, however, here’s a little more from Wayne about how the track came together. The song is the lead single from Weezy’s forthcoming album, Tha Carter IV, the Cash Money Records superstar’s first project since his release from prison in November. The rollicking track was produced by Bangladesh, who helmed Wayne’s “A Milli” and features the newest Young Money addition Cory Gunz . The upstart rapper is the progeny of veteran New York rapper Peter Gunz (“Deja Vu”) and an alumnus of XXL ‘s noted Freshmen 10 cover in 2009. According to Wayne, he placed Gunz on “6 Foot 7 Foot” to introduce his recent signee since he knew how much attention would be given to his first track. He characterized the strategy as a similar path he took with Drake and Nicki Minaj. “You know, I put Nicki on the right songs, I put Drake on the right songs; I picked the right song,” Wayne told MTV News. “It makes people pay attention … because I know that people were waiting to see what I’ll say on my first record, my first Lil Wayne record [since getting out of prison]. ‘Cause, of course, I’ve done a bunch of features, and I’m quite sure whoever I did a feature for [before], as soon as I came home they put it out ’cause it got Wayne on here. ‘He just came home, let’s put it out.’ So, I knew people were going to look at my first record like, ‘I want to know what he’s talking about on his first record.’ And, I gave you the jewel at the end. It’s like I’m forcing it on you, you got to hear this. It made everybody who didn’t know Cory Gunz [say], ‘Who is that?’ ” Gunz, for his part, said when he got the call to join the track, Weezy gave him one simple edict: Attack. “We went straight to the studio and Tunes [told me], ‘I have something for you to hear,’ and it went from there,” Cory told MTV News in December. “[Wayne said], ‘We gon’ have to attack this.’ As soon as I heard it, it was like instant. Some beats you hear [or] certain songs you hear in a party … and they hit you in a certain kind of way, and that’s kinda what the beat did. So we sat and the record is now getting an amazing response. People been messing with the record, so it’s dope. I’m happy to be here.” No timetable has been set for the release of the “6 Foot 7 Foot” video, but we will bring you that info as soon as it is available. Related Artists Lil Wayne Cory Gunz

Cee Lo’s Puppet-Backed Grammy Performance Will Be ‘Weird And Cool’

Jim Henson Company CEO Brian Henson says Sunday’s set, which also includes Gwyneth Paltrow, will be ‘an unforgettable version’ of ‘F— You.’ By Gil Kaufman Cee Lo Green Photo: Neilson Barnard/ Getty Images Over the past few years, we’ve seen Cee Lo Green in a variety of outrageous costumes during performances by his side project Gnarls Barkley, including Darth Vader, characters from “A Clockwork Orange,” “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas” and “Napoleon Dynamite,” a roman gladiator and a bride. But when the Goodie Mob rapper takes the stage at the Grammys on Sunday night, we’re likely to see a whole different side of the Atlanta native. After a year in which his profanely excellent “F— You” not only became a huge viral hit but also notched nominations for Song and Record of the Year, Green will play to his biggest audience with some help from one of his new Hollywood friends. Not only will he reteam with “Country Strong” actress and pal Gwyneth Paltrow on the show, but he’ll join the long, illustrious history of musicians who’ve taken the stage with Jim Henson’s puppets for a one-of-a-kind performance. And Henson’s son, Jim Henson Company’s Academy Award-winning CEO Brian Henson, told MTV News exclusively on Tuesday that viewers will truly see an “unforgettable” version of the song. “We have a live theater show in New York called ‘Stuffed and Unstrung,’ and we’ve taken a bunch of the characters from that cast and made them into a band and backup singers for Cee Lo,” Henson said of the fuzzy puppets from the made-for-grown-ups improv show. “He’ll be backed by puppets who will make up a very weird and cool band.” Henson said the idea to sing with the puppets came from Cee Lo, who approached the Henson Company with a concept of what he wanted to do. “We had never worked with him before, and he’s just a fabulous guy,” Henson said. “I think he’s a lifelong fan of the Muppets, and he had a pretty good idea of what he wanted.” The folks at the Grammys are keeping a tight lid on what will happen during Green’s performance, but you can bet with the family-friendly Henson puppets onboard and the strict rules about four-letter words on prime-time TV that Cee Lo will be rocking out the G-rated “Forget You” version of the song. Chances are he’ll also be marking the world debut of the special version of the tune he recorded with Paltrow in New York last month. The same week they tracked that song in a New York studio, Cee Lo came out during Paltrow’s “Saturday Night Live” monologue and helped her out with the lyrics to a Kenny Rogers/ Dolly Parton song. Henson said Cee Lo made a visit to the Henson monster shop, where the singer and the puppeteers threw around some ideas and spent a while looking at puppets. “I think it will really be an unforgettable version of the song,” Henson said. What do you expect from Cee Lo’s Grammy performance? Let us know in the comments!
