Britney Spears’ ‘Hold It Against Me’ Tops iTunes In 16 Countries

‘This is absolutely incredible!’ singer’s manager tweets. By Jocelyn Vena Cover art for Britney Spears’ “Hold It Against Me” Photo: Jive Forget any arguments that Britney Spears is some kind of underdog ; with the release of her latest tune, “Hold It Against Me,” earlier this week, the singer is certainly proving that she’s still at the top of the pop heap. Her manager, Adam Leber, tweeted that the singer was (as of press time) at the top of the iTunes charts in 16 countries: the U.S., Sweden, Australia, Greece, Switzerland, France, Ireland, Italy, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal and Spain. “This is absolutely incredible!” Leber wrote. “Brit’s fans never cease to amaze me.” In addition to thanking the fans, Leber also shared that Brit is hard at work on the video for the track. “Went 2 dance rehearsals yesterday with @BritneySpears & @brianfriedman. HIAM video is going to be incredible to say the least. More to come,” he tweeted Wednesday. Also on Wednesday, Britney Spears thanked fans for all the support they’ve been showing the lead single from Brit’s March album. “Couldn’t of asked for a better 1/11/11..thanks to all my fans and all of the radio stations for playing HIAM!” she wrote . “I am truly blessed…” On Tuesday, the same day the song was up for purchase on iTunes, it launched straight to #1 on the site and quickly broke all previous radio records for the most spins in the first day of release. “Top 40 outlets across the country immediately put ‘Hold It Against Me’ in rotation and received instant-reaction airplay at America’s most-influential stations, including Z100 and WXRK in New York and KIIS and KAMP in Los Angeles,” radio-industry analyst Kevin McCabe said in a statement. A.J. McLean Promises Rehab Won’t Affect NKOTBSB Tour

‘None of this will affect our current tour plans,’ Backstreet Boy says of hitting the road in June. By Jocelyn Vena A.J. McLean Photo: Getty Images After confirming on Thursday (January 13) that he was entering rehab, reportedly for substance abuse issues, Backstreet Boy A.J. McLean assured fans that his treatment will not affect the band’s upcoming summer tour with the New Kids on the Block. McLean said in a statement, “For personal reasons, I’ve checked myself into a rehab clinic. With 2011 being a busy year for Backstreet, I want to be healthy and perform and sing for people at my very best and happiest. None of this will affect our current tour plans and I look forward to seeing everyone really soon!” He added, “Thank you for all of your support and respecting my family and friends privacy during this time.” NKOTBSB are set to hit the road beginning June 2 for a show at the Mohegan Sun in Connecticut. And the tour, as of now, is slated to run through July 30 in Hershey, Pennsylvania. McLean first hinted about his health issues this past Sunday in a few tweets . “Thank u all for my bday wishes and tweets:)! Its gonna be a great year! I love u all and wish me luck! I start my sober journey tomm! Ttfn!” he wrote on his Twitter page. A day later, he added, “Hey all wish me luck! This is gonna be an amazing year for me and all around me! I love u all and appreciate all the love and support” TMZ reported that sources close to the pop star say he has been “out of control” lately. According to those sources, McLean was under the influence during much of the Backstreet Boys’ cruise last month. He entered rehab, his third time in a decade, reportedly because his issues were affecting the planning stages of the NKOTBSB tour. Related Artists Backstreet Boys New Kids on the Block

Drake’s Next Act, Lil Wayne’s Return, More Hip-Hop Stories To Watch

Mixtape Daily gears up for post-prison music from T.I. and Mobb Deep’s Prodigy, along with more from Young Money/ Cash Money. By Jayson Rodriguez Lil Wayne Photo: Skip Bolen/ Getty Images Arrests and court cases dominated the hip-hop headlines last year, but with Lil Wayne free and a host of new stars ready to take the next step, 2011 should bring some better days . Drake is expected to drop Take Care, the follow-up to his debut, and the entire Young Money/ Cash Money crew has their sights set on world domination (can we also get a world tour?). There are still some MCs behind bars, but T.I. and Mobb Deep’s Prodigy will be out soon, and hopefully acts like Young Jeezy, 50 Cent and Nas can rebound from rap purgatory with projects worthy of their talents. Here, Mixtape Daily presents part two in our preview of stories to follow in the new year. Drake’s Second Date The breakout star of 2010 is working on the follow-up to his debut, Thank Me Later : the gentlemanly titled Take Care. He’s promised bigger records for his sophomore set, and so far, he’s been in the studio with Justin Timberlake and the Neptunes, among others, to prove his point. His much-hyped R&B mixtape, It’s Never Enough, is on hold at the moment as Drizzy takes his act international during his current jaunt across the Atlantic with J. Cole. When the pair of projects arrive, however, expect Drake-mania to ratchet up all over again. Freed MCs The past 12 months weren’t kind to T.I. After being released from a halfway house in March, the beloved Atlanta MC returned to work, but the reception to his solo material was tepid. He scored knockouts with his guest verses on Drake’s and Rick Ross’ albums, but by the time he released his retooled (and rushed) No Mercy LP, he was back behind bars after a parole violation . We’re hoping Tip rebounds like Blake Griffin when he completes his 11-month prison term. Mobb Deep’s Prodigy, meanwhile, is scheduled to finish his jail sentence this year as well. The New York MC was embarking on a rejuvenated solo career when he was arrested on gun-possession charges. We’ll be saluting him when he touches back down. Rebounding Rappers Without a doubt, Young Jeezy is one of the best out, but the trap star has had a harder time than usual getting his latest album, the long-delayed Thug Motivation 103, out the gate due to the slow response to his single choices. Likewise, a motivated 50 Cent, who has been busy milking millions of dollars out of Hollywood lately, is set to come back with a new album, the follow-up to Before I Self-Destruct, the superstar’s first LP to fall short of the platinum-selling mark. Fellow Queens native Nas may have expanded his fanbase with his collaborative effort with Damian Marley, but fans are looking for the Distant Relatives MC to return to Nasty Nas form on his forthcoming effort, due later this year. Weezy’s World There’s Lil Wayne’s next album, and then there’s everybody else’s projects. Apologies to Jay-Z and Kanye West, but even their royal collaborative LP, Watch the Thrown, has to bow down to Tha Carter IV as the most-anticipated hip-hop album of the year. The frenetic MC was behind bars for 10 months in 2010 and has kept a low profile since he was released in November. Weezy’s rollicking “6 Foot 7 Foot” is a sign of things to come. Excuse his charisma, but we’re rocking with the Cash Money King in 2011. Young Money/ Cash Money Takeover Nicki Minaj is still in full promotional mode for Pink Friday, with videos on the way for her Drake-assisted “Moment 4 Life” and “Fly” featuring Rihanna. Then there’s Drizzy’s pair of projects, his R&B mixtape and Take Care. Lil Wayne is back (!!!) and putting the final touches on Tha Carter IV. The next generation of YM heavy hitters are on deck: Tyga, Lil Twist and Cory Gunz are all expected to drop their debuts albums. New Cash Money acquisition DJ Khaled is also readying his first project for the house that Baby and Slim built. Then there’s the rumored YMCMB tour that would place the revamped crew alongside Bad Boy, Death Row, No Limit, Rough Ryders and Roc-A-Fella as one of the premiere collectives in hip-hop history. Mixtape Daily will be back on the daily grind beginning Tuesday, January 18, with our first Main Pick of the new year, Rick Ross’ Ashes to Ashes. Taylor Swift’s ‘Back To December’ Video Extends Her Apology

Though she hasn’t said who the song is about, Swift did admit to being ‘careless’ in the relationship. By Jocelyn Vena Taylor Swift in the “Back to December” music video Photo: Big Machine Records Long before Taylor Swift released the video for “Back to December,” everyone was clamoring for clues about who she was singing to in the breakup ballad. And still, the dark-haired character in the video could represent any one of her recent exes. Swift has always made it clear that though she sings about her life, she never names names, but she did talk to MTV News about writing an apology song, which she explained was a first for her. “I’ve never felt the need to apologize in a song before, but in the last two years I’ve experienced a lot, [including] a lot of different kinds of learning lessons,” Taylor told us last year, just before the release of Speak Now. “And sometimes you learn a lesson too late and at that point you need to apologize because you were careless.” In the chorus, she sings, “So this is me swallowing my pride/ Standing in front of you saying I’m sorry for that night And I’d go back to December all the time/ It turns out freedom ain’t nothing but missing you/ Wishing that I’d realized what I had when you were mine.” Many have guessed that the tune is about her breakup with “Twilight” star Taylor Lautner. Whoever it is, Swift felt her former paramour deserved a musical mea culpa. “Well, I’ve always sort of written songs about situations in life, things that needed to be said,” she told E! back in October. “I write songs about people who deserve to have songs written about them, and whatever they need to hear, whatever is the right thing to say to that person, ends up being said.” While Swift may have been careless toward the guy she’s writing about on the song, she’s admitted he was nothing but a gentleman. “This is about a person who was incredible to me, just perfect to me in a relationship,” she said. “And I was really careless with him.” Related Videos MTV News Extended Play: Taylor Swift Related Photos Taylor Swift’s Dating History Related Artists Taylor Swift

Rihanna Set To Appear As Vogue Cover Girl

The Loud singer tweeted that famed photographer Annie Leibovitz captured her for the ‘sexy’ cover. By Jocelyn Vena Rihanna Photo: Michael Tran/ FilmMagic Rihanna is set to appear on the cover of the one the most-esteemed fashion magazines in the world. The singer shared with her fans that she is the latest star to be a Vogue cover girl. In addition, she was shot by one of the fashion world’s biggest photographers. “Just wrapped my first American Vogue cover shoot with Annie Leibovitz…Rah!” the singer revealed on her Twitter . “#SEXY” Little else is known about the issue in which Rihanna will appear, and a rep had not responded to MTV News’ request for comment by press time, but sexy has certainly been the theme of many of Barbadian beauty’s other magazine shoots. She frequently appears semi-nude or looking incredibly high-glam when she sits down for photos. For a recent Interview shoot, the Loud singer appeared in sexy, sleek gowns. She graced the cover of Seventeen over the summer looking fresh, with a big smile on her face. And, her July Elle cover showed Rihanna looking fierce in a bedazzled multi-colored mini. Rih kept things even steamier while she was promoting her 2009 album, Rated R . She frequently appeared wearing very little or nothing in promo shots and photo shoots related to the release. When she landed on the cover of the January 2010 issue of GQ , she was completely topless. Rihanna recently shot a video for Nicki Minaj’s “Fly.” The two ladies were seen getting “flirty” on the set, as they tweeted a photo of themselves being friendly with one another. “Me and Nikki in our new crib, lol! Gettin busy on set of FLY!!!” Rihanna wrote on her Twitter. “Its so hard to keep my hands off!” Related Artists Rihanna

Taylor Swift Breaks A Heart In Her ‘Back To December’ Video

Swift ends relationship with hunky lead in the Yoann Lemoine-directed clip. By Jocelyn Vena Taylor Swift in the “Back to December” music video Photo: Big Machine Records What happens when you break the heart of a hunky-looking dude who resembles a “Twilight” character and you regret it? Well, if you’re Taylor Swift, it snows in your straight-out-of-an-Anthropologie-catalog bedroom as you write a breakup letter for your ex-beau. That’s the basic plot for Taylor Swift’s just-released “Back to December” video . In Swift’s clip for “Mine,” her lead single off her massive album Speak Now , the singer proved that she was no longer that girl who sang about proms and cheerleaders. Instead, she sang about finding love, getting married and having a family. Here, in her darker, more somber clip (despite all the early morning sun) for “Back to December,” Swift is breaking up with someone, an image we don’t usually associate with the singer. Looking almost sultry in bedhead hair, cozy sweater and a boyfriend T-shirt, Swift looks morose as she contemplates breaking it off with her good-looking boyfriend. Shots of the singer sitting in a bathtub clothed, sitting on her kitchen counter (perhaps a nod to the “Mine” video fight scene) and sitting on her bed singing the song are intercut with those of the actor who plays Swift’s love interest driving in his car, presumably away from Swift’s suburban mansion, and sitting alone on a football field, perhaps regretting letting Swift get away so easily. The video was directed by Yoann Lemoine, who did Katy Perry’s equally dreamy, equally girly clip for “Teenage Dream.” The video ends with Swift in her snowy home while the ex-boyfriend finds her breakup letter in his coat pocket as he sits alone in the bleachers. The song is rumored to be about the demise of Swift’s relationship with “Twilight” heartthrob Taylor Lautner . It’s to be noted that the video was released on January 13 — as Swift fans know, 13 is the singer’s lucky number. Snow has also been the theme in Swift’s live performances of this song, a natural fit given that the song is about December. What do you think of Taylor Swift’s new video for “Back to December”? Exclusive: Eminem To Perform At The Grammys

Other performers for February 13 show will be announced Thursday. By Jayson Rodriguez Eminem Photo: Kevin Mazur/EM/WireImage Consider Eminem ‘s comeback complete. The superstar MC will take the stage at the 53rd annual Grammy Awards next month in Los Angeles, MTV News has learned exclusively. The Recording Academy will officially announce Em and other performers on Thursday; Pitchfork reported Wednesday (January 12) that Arcade Fire will also be performing at the awards show. The performance is the latest in a line of accomplishments for Eminem since he released Recovery, which is up for Album of the Year. The Detroit lyricist scored a pair of #1 singles from the album with “Not Afraid” and “Love the Way You Lie,” featuring Rihanna. Those songs helped Em earn 10 Grammy nominations . It’s quite a turnaround from his last project, Relapse. That album debuted at #1 but received mixed reviews, despite winning Best Rap Album at the 2009 Grammys. With Recovery, however, Em has returned to form. Now, he’s set to take center stage at the prestigious event. Twelve months ago, he joined Drake for the then-upstart’s “Forever” performance. But for this year’s telecast, the multiple Grammy winner will take top billing. He’s already been featured in the show’s promotional campaign . A touching 30-second spot showcases Em’s musical legacy , from the loss of his friend, fellow MC Proof, to his struggles through drug dependency and his rise back to the top of the hip-hop game. There’s no question the veteran MC will be the star of the festivities. In December, when nominations were revealed, the rapper led the pack, besting Bruno Mars and Lady Gaga, who received seven and six nominations, respectively. The Grammys air Sunday, February 13, at 8 p.m. ET on CBS. What song are you hoping Eminem performs at the Grammys? Let us know in the comments! Eminem Signs Slaughterhouse, Yelawolf To Shady Records

Cashis and D-12 remain on the roster as Shady enters ‘new generation.’ By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Sway Calloway Eminem, Slaughterhouse and Yelawolf on the March 2010 cover of XXL magazine Photo: Kai Regan/ Harris Publications Eminem is back in more ways than one. The Detroit lyricist is reviving his Shady Records company, and Wednesday (January 12) he announced the signing of two new acts: underground supergroup Slaughterhouse and upstart rapper Yelawolf . Cashis and D-12 remain on the roster, but Em made no secret of wanting to bring new life to his company. “Yelawolf and Slaughterhouse, it’s kinda phase two of Shady,” Eminem explained in a statement. “It’s the new generation of Shady Records, and as we’re trying to rebuild our label, it’s exciting for hip-hop, and with all of these forces coming together and with what everybody’s capable of on the mic, it’s gonna be fun.” The four-man Slaughterhouse collective — Joe Budden, Joell Ortiz, Crooked I and Royce Da 5’9″ — was in talks with Shady Records for longer than a year working on the deal. “I been answering that question for a year and change, ever since that Drake ‘Forever’ music video,” Budden told MTV News during an appearance on “RapFix Live,” citing a scene where the group stands behind Em during his verse. “It’s like, Eminem is a whole nother entity. The guy is nominated for 10 Grammys.” Southern rhyme slinger Yelawolf is backed by music industry veteran Kawan “KP” Prather, who inked an upstart T.I. to his first deal and helped Usher on the superstar’s Confessions album. “Considering where I’m from and the sh– I’ve been through, it’s hard to put into words what partnering with Shady means to me, my team at Ghet-O-Vision and my state of Alabama,” Yela said in prepared remarks. “I can tell you that when you’re willing to give your life up to see a dream through, the reward is great,” he continued. “And now that I’ve become an apprentice to one of the greatest artists in the world, my potential reaches beyond anything I ever imagined. Let’s kill this sh–.” Both acts are expected to deliver projects in the coming months. What other artists would you like to see on Shady Records? Share your ideas in the comments below! Britney Spears’ Pop Rivalries, From Christina Aguilera To Lady Gaga

‘She’s sort of left a lot of these girls in the dust,’ one Spears expert tells MTV News. By Jocelyn Vena, with additional reporting by Christina Garibaldi Lady Gaga and Britney Spears Photo: Getty Images For more than a decade, Britney Spears has been pitted against some of her pop peers, including Madonna, Jessica Simpson, Christian Aguilera and, most recently, Lady Gaga . She’s publicly buried the hatchet with Madonna and Aguilera — sharing a three-way kiss with the pair at the 2003 VMAs — and never really paid much attention to the hype of other so-called rivalries. “Since the beginning of her career, she’s always been pitted against whatever big pop person there is,” MTV News’ Jim Cantiello explained. “I feel like artists have had rivalries with Britney and she hasn’t really had rivalries with them,” Entertainment Weekly ‘s Leah Greenblatt added. “She’s sort of left a lot of these girls in the dust.” While Brit has managed to stay on top all these years, a new pop princess might give her a run for her money. “I think Gaga’s already been talking about what she is gonna do. She has said that her album is going to be more than just dance songs, and I’m guessing that Britney might be making a different type of album, which is great, because in that sense, Brit and Gaga don’t have to compete,” Perez Hilton said of any potential new rivalry. “They’re each doing their own very distinct thing.” Greenblatt agreed: “It just seems like they’re operating on different wavelengths right now. I mean, Britney’s proven herself over such a longer period of time than Gaga has. I don’t think that Gaga can just wipe her off the pop royalty board.” At the end of the day, it’s not at all about competition, Cantiello explained. “Britney’s going in the super dance route and Gaga’s doing a super personal album,” he said. “It comes a point where we’ve got to stop comparing the two.” Plus, it’s hard for these two to really ever compete with one another, since Gaga has admitted to waving the Britney flag . “I was 13 when Britney became a star,” she said in 2009. “I was amazed by the level of the superfan that Britney created. I want to bring back the feeling that I used to feel.” Who has been Britney’s worthiest adversary? Share your thoughts in the comments! ‘Glee’ Stars Stayed Up All Night For ‘Thriller’ Cover

‘It was probably one of the most physical numbers that we’ve ever done,’ Cory Monteith says. By James Dinh “Glee” cast films their “Thriller” performance Photo: Ramey Photo When “Glee” returns from hiatus in the high-profile post-Super Bowl slot, it’s returning in a big way, covering Michael Jackson ‘s “Thriller.” On Tuesday, the cast spoke to “Access Hollywood” about re-making the iconic tune, which will reportedly be mashed up with another yet-to-be-revealed hit. “It was a huge production. We we’re shooting that until 6:30 in the morning,” Cory Monteith told “AH” at the Television Critics Association press tour. “We shot all night, and it was probably one of the most physical numbers that we’ve ever done. I was lifting Naya Rivera at one point in the dance. It was really active. We had the whole USC band wrapped in to this number as you can see in the photos. It was awesome.” Photos of the cast filming “Thriller” surfaced on the Internet recently, depicting a prom night turned zombie affair. Jackson’s tune is just one of the many hits to be covered in the broadcast. Other songs featured in the post-Super Bowl episode include hits by the Black Eyed Peas, Katy Perry and Lady Antebellum. Kevin McHale revealed that Jackson is his “favorite artist ever” and that he has been continuously requesting to cover a tune by the late King of Pop. “I’ve been pushing very obnoxiously for a very, very long time, so I’m beyond thrilled that we do Michael Jackson,” said the actor. Like the iconic music video, the “Glee” cover was an extravagant production, which was just fitting for star Dianna Agron, who couldn’t help smile throughout filming. “The whole night, everybody kept saying, ‘Why are you laughing so much? Why are you smiling so much?’ ” she said. “I was just in my element. I was in huge makeup, huge hair, huge costume, the stuff that I loved the most, which is why I loved ‘Rocky [Horror Picture Show’] so much.” Matthew Morrison isn’t in the number, but he watched it being shot. “We actually shot it, like, a couple nights ago,” Morrison told “AH.” “I actually went out to see it. We shot it in Long Beach and at a high school that we used their football field at. It was stunning. It’s so weird with this show. We keep outdoing ourselves. It’s like, ‘What is there left to do?’ This number is just fantastic.” Related Artists Michael Jackson
