Avril Lavigne Offers Free Download Of ‘What The Hell’

Songstress will give new single away for free via Facebook on New Year’s Day. By James Dinh Avril Lavigne Photo: John Parra/ Wireimage Avril Lavigne is poising herself for a comeback. Not only will the pop-punk princess debut her brand-new single, “What the Hell,” on “Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve With Ryan Seacrest 2011,” but she’s also treating fans to a free download of the tune on New Year’s Day. In order to get the freebie, fans will need to head to the Avril’s official Facebook page and “like” the starlet on January 1. As of now, the singer/songwriter has uploaded a 21-second video titled “Knock! Knock!” to the social media site to tease the premiere. The clip begins with the song’s flashing title before a cameraman walks up to Lavigne’s trailer and knocks on the door. The clip ends with the 26-year-old starlet opening the door and proclaiming, “What the hell?” Earlier this month, the Canadian songstress described the lead single off Goodbye Lullaby, which hits stores March 8, as “an unabashed embrace of fun and freedom.” However, Lavigne has stressed in numerous interviews that the rest of the LP will have a raw essence to it. Among other tunes featured on the new album are “Smile,” which she described on her website as a rocker in which she “expresses her gratitude for special people in her life,” the ballad “Wish You Were Here” and the song she told Entertainment Weekly was the album’s most personal track, “Goodbye.” During the making of Goodbye Lullaby, the singer worked with producer/songwriter Butch Walker, pop innovator Max Martin, her former guitarist Evan Taubenfeld and even ex-husband, Sum 41’s Deryck Whibley. LeAnn Rimes Gets Engaged To Eddie Cibrian

‘It’s been an incredible last few days. I was shocked!!!’ singer tweets. By James Dinh Eddie Cibrian and LeAnn Rimes Photo: Getty Images With a slew of recent pregnancy and engagement announcements, it appears to be the season of romance for celebrity couples. LeAnn Rimes and Eddie Cibrian are the latest couple to take on the relationship milestone by announcing their engagement on Monday (December 27), according to People magazine. “Yes, they were engaged over the holidays and are very happy,” a rep for Rimes said in a statement. A source tells the mag that while the duo spent Christmas at home in Los Angeles, they did have family and close friends in town to celebrate the momentous occasion. On Monday, the pair was spotted on a Malibu beach, where the blond songstress was seen wearing her new engagement ring. According to the source, the couple wanted the ring to have “an antique feel, but a new ring.” Rimes, Cibrian and the actor’s childhood friend Brent Polacheck collectively designed the platinum band, which bears a 5-carat oval diamond set in the middle of a rose gold fleur-de-lis. The singer/songwriter took to Twitter on Monday afternoon to share the big news with her fans. “Thank you for all your well wishes!!” she wrote. “We are extremely excited and look forward to a beautiful future. It’s been an incredible last few days. I was shocked!!! We are blessed, our families are so happy and our lives are filled with love. It was nice to have our little secret for us, our families and friends a few days! So excited to now share the wonderful news with our fans.” The 28-year-old songstress gave a shout-out to her publicist, who also serves as representation for Natalie Portman. The “Black Swan” actress also had big news to share by announcing her engagement and pregnancy Monday. “So funny, my dear publicist is the same rep for Natalie Portman and me. So much for his vacation lol!!! Love you Rhett!!!!!” Rimes tweeted . However, the duo’s road to engagement hasn’t always been smooth sailing. Both Rimes and Cibrian were married when they first met each other during the filming of the Lifetime original movie “Northern Lights.” The affair made headlines, but the singer stuck to her guns saying, “That’s just not me. What happened is not who I am, period. … You had two couples whose marriages didn’t work who really stumbled upon each other and fell in love.” After the duo separately finalized their divorces, there was nothing but love on the horizon. In November, engagement rumors sparked after Cibrian tweeted a photo of himself on bended knee holding Rimes’ hand before a sign that read “White Chapel Lunatic Asylum.” Share your well-wishes for the couple below! Avril Lavigne ‘Excited’ That Rihanna Sampled Her Song

‘She’s a really great singer, so yeah I was excited,’ Lavigne says of Rihanna sampling ‘I’m With You’ for ‘Cheers (Drink to That).’ By James Dinh Avril Lavigne Photo: Frederick M. Brown/ Getty Images During “Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve” special, Avril Lavigne will unveil her brand-new single “What the Hell.” However, before she debuts any new music, fans can listen to the Canadian singer’s signature yodel from her 2002 hit “I’m With You” on Rihanna’s new drinking anthem, “Cheers (Drink to That).” In a Q&A session with Entertainment Weekly, Lavigne spoke about the celebratory party track, admitting that that the Barbadian songstress has some great vocal chops. “It was really exciting because ‘I’m With You’ is one of my favorite songs that I’ve done, I always love performing it,” the punky popster admitted. “And I think Rihanna’s awesome, she has great songs, she’s a really great singer, so yeah I was excited. I think it’s really cool.” When MTV News spoke to Rihanna about “Cheers (Drink to That)” in November, the red-headed star told us that the cut is one of her favorites off her latest release, Loud . “I love that song,” she gushed. “That is one of my favorite songs on the album. It makes you feel like celebrating. It gives you a great feeling inside like you want to go out and have a drink. … People can’t wait for the weekend.” When asked why the she didn’t just ask Lavigne to come into the studio to re-record the song’s signature yodel, Rihanna explained, “I asked the same thing, but when I heard the track, it was already embedded in the music, so the producers already had it that way.” As for Avril’s own celebratory music, the 26-year-old singer/songwriter described her new single as “more pop and uptempo and kind of reminiscent of my old stuff.” The songstress also confessed that her next album, Goodbye Lullaby – due in stores March 8 – will be “more stripped and raw and a little deeper.” What do you think of the Avril-sampled “Cheers (Drink to That)”? Lindsay Lohan Inspires New Comedy ‘Dogs In Pocketbooks’

Screenwriter Charles Casillo has hired heiress Lydia Hearst Shaw to star as a ‘bratty movie goddess … in trouble with the law.’ By Terri Schwartz Lindsay Lohan Photo: Stephen Shugerman/Getty Images Lindsay Lohan’s troubled life and recent scandals don’t necessarily seem particularly funny, but screenwriter Charles Casillo apparently is aiming to put a comedic spin on the actress’s trials in the new film “Dogs in Pocketbooks.” The New York Post reports that Casillo has chosen heiress Lydia Hearst Shaw, in her first Hollywood film role, to play the Lohan-esque character at the center of his movie. The writer told the Post that Shaw will portray a “bratty movie goddess in and out of rehab, in trouble with the law, and hounded by greedy agents, predatory paparazzi, off-the-wall stalkers and crazed media.” TMZ pointed out that the only Lohan-related aspect missing from this picture are “scheming, sponging parents whose lives derail their child,” although that might take away from some of the flick’s comedic value. The film is set to start shooting in New York and Los Angeles in February. Casillo emphasized to the Post that “Dogs in Pocketbooks” is “in no way mean-spirited toward Lindsay,” adding, “It’s the kind of thing she has spoofed about herself in the past. It’s more of a satire about the crazy people around her and the situations they generate. It satirizes the obsession with modern celebrity.” Though Shaw has not acted in a feature film before, she is well known for her modeling career — including campaigns for Bottega Veneta, Escada and Lord & Taylor — and dating Jeff Goldblum. She also is the daughter of famous 1970s kidnapping victim Patty Hearst. Casillo said he spent a lot of time trying to find the right woman to play the big-screen version of Lohan, and that Shaw is perfect for the part. “She’s one of the few supermodels who can actually act,” he insisted. “She’s smart, well-read, charming and very beautiful. We looked at a lot of actresses for this role, and I was really knocked out.” The fact that she knows what it’s like to be a pursued celebrity probably only helped as well, considering she is the heir to the William Randolph Hearst fortune. The film also has already cast “Dynasty” actress Joan Collins as the main character’s agent. The veteran star told the Post , “The script is a hoot — a satire on the crazed hysteria surrounding show-biz celebrities. I’m playing an aggressive, sexy, powerful woman. For a change.” This month, Lohan has been involved in a scandal where a woman who worked at the rehab facility at which the actress was staying accused her of assault, though charges have now been dropped. She also was recently replaced by Malin Akerman as the star of the Linda Lovelace biopic “Inferno” because Lohan was not going to be out of rehab in time to shoot the movie. Teena Marie’s Influence Found In Mary J. Blige, Hip-Hop, More

Late soul veteran paved the way for several of today’s hitmakers. By Mawuse Ziegbe Teena Marie Photo: Larry Marano/Getty Images R&B great Teena Marie died over the weekend, but her enduring legacy can be found in the legions of soul stars who followed in her footsteps. Marie joined the iconic Motown label in the late ’70s and spent the next three decades building a reputation as a Grammy-nominated multi-instrumentalist with a gift for penning lyrics and belting with soulful abandon. Her influence — from her top-flight musicianship to her pioneering image as a white, female R&B artist — can be found in many of today’s hitmakers. Mary J. Blige The Queen of Hip-Hop Soul has pointed to Marie as an early influence when the budding superstar was coming up in her scrappy Yonkers, New York, neighborhood. “Tina Mari inspired me vocally as a child. Her songs I sang in the mirror with a hair brush. I’m so hurt,” she tweeted on Sunday. “I’ll love u forever Tina Mari. Portuguese Love, Casanova Brown, Square Biz, I need your lovin, all of your music will live forever through me. In my heart she’s Tina, So rest in peace Tina, i love u. Every girl that grew up in the hood , with her blasting through the windows, Cars and radio waves can Feel me.” Faith Evans Like Marie, former Bad Boy singer Faith Evans boasts a bold voice and a headline-making relationship with a labelmate and music icon. Marie hooked up with Motown funk architect Rick James early in her career and would go on to spark a romance with the R&B great. James also served as a mentor to Marie, and the two teamed up for memorable collaborations such as James’ Street Songs jam “Fire and Desire.” In addition to churning out soulful hits with Bad Boy, Evans is known for marrying Brooklyn MC Notorious B.I.G. soon after meeting her charismatic labelmate. Marie has even commented on the similarities between the two vocalists in the bio for the soul legend’s 2009 album, Congo Square, which featured their collabo “Can’t Last a Day.” “I’ve always loved Faith and her vocal style. She reminds me of me. Her correlation with Biggie — having a career with him and without him — reminds me of me and Rick,” she said. “I feel like she’s a younger me. Of the younger ladies, she’s the one I love most.” Alicia Keys Marie was also a masterful musician, often manning everything from the keyboards to guitar on her albums and heading behind the boards as a producer. She helped establish a blueprint for female R&B stars who are actively involved in various aspects of the production process, such as pianist and producer Alicia Keys, who tweeted after Marie’s death, “God bless Teena Marie & her Family!Sending Blessings &prayers I was jus sayin tht fire & desire is 1 of the most beautifully performd songs!” Pink Marie’s race was somewhat controversial when she first debuted on Motown as a white woman belting soul-stirring R&B. Her picture was left off the album packaging her first LP, and many fans assumed Lady T was another new black artist making her mark in the R&B scene. However, she was ultimately accepted because of her undeniable talent and conviction in her voice. She has paved the way for many contemporary artists such as Joss Stone and Pink, who initially hit the scene with an R&B-tinged sound. After hearing of Marie’s death, Pink re-tweeted a missive from Go-Go’s bassist Kathy Valentine that read, “THIS SUCKS– heard that Teena Marie passed away. RIP. she was an original and one of a kind. sad.” As Marie told Essence in 2009, “I’m a black artist with white skin. At the end of the day you have to sing what’s in your own soul.” Hip-Hop While she made her name as a soul veteran, Marie’s music has popped up in hip-hop cuts from many of the game’s finest lyricists. Marie’s 1981 jam “Square Biz” was revamped for rap supergroup the Firm’s (Nas, Foxy Brown, AZ, Nature, Cormega) 1997 single “Firm Biz,” and Mase reworked the track’s jocular bass line for the Harlem World album cut “Love U So.” The chorus for the Fugees’ 1996 smash “Fu-Gee-La” features similar crooning to Marie’s hit “Ooo La La La” from the 1988 album Naked to the World. Even hip-hop stars who may not have reimagined Marie’s catalog for their own hits, such as Game , Big Boi and ?uestlove , recalled Marie’s influence and legacy on Twitter. Demi Lovato 2011 Solo Tour Still On Track

After dropping out of the Jonas Brothers ‘Camp Rock’ tour in October to enter treatment, Disney star confirms she’ll be back next year. By James Dinh Demi Lovato Photo: Gary Miller/ FilmMagic When Demi Lovato checked herself into a treatment center for “emotional and physical issues” in October, the Disney starlet was forced to check out early from her joint “Camp Rock” tour with the Jonas Brothers . But the teen star is determined to hit the road once again to promote a new album in 2011, according to The Associated Press . In an article about concert promoters’ plans to make ticket prices more affordable in 2011, the AP revealed that Lovato’s camp have confirmed that the pop star’s plans for a solo 2011 tour to promote a new album are still on track. When speaking about the high ticket prices, the 18-year-old starlet said, “I have best friends that aren’t in the industry and are dealing with just buying groceries and things like that, so I want to do my part.” Back in November, a rep for Lovato explained that the singer/actress was disappointed that she couldn’t wrap up the Jonas Brothers tour, saying, “[Demi] regrets not being able to finish her tour, but is looking forward to getting back to work in the near future.” While Lovato pulled out from that tour with six scheduled days left, the star was not replaced for the remaining set of shows in South America. Things seem to be looking up for the teen sensation. Over the weekend, Lovato was spotted spending time with her family at a restaurant near her treatment facility in Woodridge, Illinois.
