T.I.’s No Mercy Debuts At #4 On Billboard

Susan Boyle holds tight to #1 on next week’s albums chart. By Gil Kaufman T.I.’s No Mercy Photo: Grand Hustle Records Susan Boyle has officially earned the honorary title of Christmas Queen. For the second year in a row, the “Britain’s Got Talent” runner-up is taking on all comers with a chart-topping holiday release that has a stranglehold on the top spot of the Billboard 200 albums chart. Her second release, The Gift, will once again take the pole position next week with sales of 243,000, giving her a five-week total north of 1.3 million, according to figures provided by Nielsen SoundScan. The only new release to crack the top five is T.I.’s No Mercy, which comes in at #4. The album sold 159,000 just weeks after the King of the South reported to prison for an 11-month sentence tied to a probation violation from his 2007 federal weapons case. Also breaking into the top 10 is the “Tron Legacy” soundtrack from helmet-rocking techno duo Daft Punk, which moved 71,000 copies in its chart debut. The top 10 is otherwise just a shuffle of the usual suspects. Taylor Swift keeps her grip on the #2 spot with Speak Now, which sold 201,000 copies, pushing her past the 2.3 million mark in less than two months. Swift is followed by the “Glee” Christmas album (#3, 193,000), grade school reality-show opera singer Jackie Evancho’s O Holy Night EP (#5, 149,000), Nicki Minaj’s Pink Friday (#6, 82,000), Josh Groban’s Illuminations (#7, 75,000), another “Glee” collection, Vol. 4 (#8, 74,000), and Rihanna’s Loud (#9, 71,000). After just two weeks in the top 10, Kanye West’s well-reviewed My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy falls to #14 as sales shrank by 39 percent to 67,000. The Black Eyed Peas had an even harsher comedown for The Beginning, which drops 10 spots in week two to #16 (62,000, sales down 48 percent). Hard rockers Hinder enter the fray at #37 with All American Nightmare (35,000) while deadmau5 squeaks in at #47 with his album 4×4=12 (27,0000) and British soul siren Duffy hits #72 with her second album, Endlessly (18,000). My Chemical Romance are marching the wrong way on the chart with Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys, which drops 27 spots to #87 in its third week, selling just 15,000 copies. That’s gangbusters compared to season nine “American Idol” winner Lee DeWyze, who continues to struggle to get traction for his debut, Live It Up. The LP slides another 10 spots to #133 on sales of 9,000, giving him a one-month total just shy of 72,000. The “Glee” Christmas album is tops on the iTunes albums chart, besting T.I., who settles in at #2, followed by Kanye, “Tron,” deadmua5, Mumford & Sons’ Sigh No More, Bruno Mars’ Doo-Wops & Hooligans, Hinder, Rihanna and the “Burlesque” soundtrack. The singles chart once again belongs to Katy Perry and her smash “Firework,” with Mars right behind with “Grenade.” They’re followed by the Black Eyed Peas’ “The Time (Dirty Bit),” Rihanna and Drake’s “What’s My Name,” Pink’s “Raise Your Glass,” Ke$ha’s “We R Who We R,” T.I.’s hookup with Eminem, “That’s All She Wrote,” Wiz Khalifa’s “Black and Yellow,” Trey Songz’s “Bottoms Up” and Enrique Iglesias’ “Tonight.” Next week should present the first challenge to Boyle’s domination with the arrival of late pop icon Michael Jackson’s first posthumous studio album, Michael, as well as new discs from R. Kelly, Diddy-Dirty Money, Ciara and the major-label debut of “Idol” runner-up Crystal Bowersox. Related Artists T.I. Susan Boyle Taylor Swift

Justin Bieber Co-Signs Diddy’s Album While Recording New Track

‘Everybody, if you’re anybody, you’ll go get the album,’ Bieber says of Last Train to Paris. By Jocelyn Vena Diddy and Justin Bieber Photo: MTV News On Tuesday evening, MTV News was on hand when Justin Bieber was discovered laying down tracks at Diddy’s recording studio in New York City. “In the studio getting creative,” he wrote . “Just got to show luv to my big bro @iamdiddy and his new album ‘Last Train to Paris.’ ” Bieber’s manager, Scooter Braun, explained to us that the pop star had an idea for a song that he needed to “get off of his chest,” and that Diddy’s studio is like a second home for the teen superstar. MTV News was spending the day with Diddy , who just released his Last Train to Paris album. Though the rap mogul hardly ever stops working himself, he jokingly complained about Bieber being too busy for him these days. “Well, I mean, you try to get in contact with me through all my partners and whatnot, but you never really got my number, so you want my number?” the 16-year-old responded. After an exchange of phone numbers, Diddy made Bieber an official member of Diddy-Dirty Money and gave him and Braun

Stephen Colbert, Drake, Lil Wayne Have 2010’s Top Retweeted Tweets

Gulf oil spill, World Cup, VMAs and Justin Bieber among the top trends of the year on Twitter and Facebook. By Gil Kaufman Stephen Colbert Photo: Scott Wintrow/ Getty Images Not only were people riveted by the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico this year; they also couldn’t resist sharing some wry humor on the matter. That’s why Stephen Colbert’s 140-character comment about the matter was Twitter’s Top Retweeted Tweet of 2010 . “In honor of oil-soaked birds, ‘tweets’ are now ‘gurgles,’ ” read the post, that earned the comedian a Golden Tweet award on “The Colbert Report” Tuesday night. Much of the top 10 Retweeted Tweets were from musicians: Drake (#2), Lil Wayne (#3), Justin Bieber (#4), Joe Jonas (#6), Lady Gaga (#7), Kanye West (#8) and Rihanna (#9). A post from spoof account @alqueda was #5, and an ironically uplifting piece of advice from @sh–mydadsays made the list at #10. Earlier this week, Twitter and Facebook released their respective lists of the top trends on their sites over the past 12 months. Each is a fascination look at the obsessions and globally unifying events, people, pop culture fixations and bizarre crazes that grabbed our digital attention this year. While there’s some crossover on the Twitter and Facebook lists, the more interesting parts are where they diverge. For instance, the #1 item on Facebook’s “Memology 2010” global list of top status trends was “HMU,” a shorthand status update that translates to “hit me up,” meaning someone wants you to call or text them. The rest of the list featured a mixture of more predictable/generic trends, including: World Cup (#2), Movies (#3), iPad and iPhone (#4), Haiti (#5), Justin Bieber (#6), Games on Facebook (#7), Mineros/Miners (referring to the trapped Chilean miners) (#8), the B.o.B. song “Airplanes” (#9) and 2011. Over on Twitter , the #Hindsight2010 list of top trends featured a few of the same items, but users dug a bit deeper into specific movies, events and fads. Topping the list was the disastrous Gulf oil spill, followed by the mania over the FIFA World Cup, then the mind-bending thriller “Inception,” the Haiti Earthquake, vuvuzela (the ubiquitous buzzing sound of the World Cup) and the Apple iPad. Rounding out the list were the Google Android phone (#7), Justin Bieber (#8), “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows” (#9) and the late eight-tentacled World Cup prognosticator, Pulpo Paul. MTV has reason to celebrate the list, as our own Video Music Awards came in at # 1 on the list of top TV trends, and the MTV Movie Awards were #9. “Pretty Little Liars” was #2 on the list, followed by “True Blood,” “Walking Dead” and the Grammy Awards. The men and women of “Glee” came in at #6, just ahead of “Family Guy” and “CSI.” The American Music Awards rounded out the top 10. Related Artists Drake Lil Wayne

Alice Cooper, Neil Diamond Among Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame Inductees

Tom Waits, Dr. John also made the list. By Gil Kaufman Alice Cooper Photo: Kevork Djansezian/ Getty Images This year’s list of Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees offers a musical cornucopia of styles. From the New Orleans boogie woogie voodoo soul of Dr. John to Tom Waits’ boho preacher-poet performance art, Neil Diamond’s overwrought pop histrionics, Darlene Love’s girl-group R&B and Alice Cooper’s goth/glam rock theater of the macabre, the Hall of Fame class of 2011 is set to take the stage for their honors on March 14 at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York. With the exception of Waits, all of the inductees are first-time nominees. While all are probably popping corks now, that means, of course, that a number of younger acts didn’t make the list. These include multiple nominees the Beastie Boys and LL Cool J, first-time nominee Bon Jovi and veteran acts J. Geils Band, Donna Summer and Chic. Cooper, 62, whose onstage theatrics include macabre set pieces such as guillotines and gallows, told Billboard that he felt it was about time his band got a nod. “I’ve always felt the same way about this whole thing,” said Cooper, whose classic hits includes “I’m Eighteen” and “School’s Out,” teenage rebellion anthems for the ages recorded by a band he started 45 years ago in high school. “I kind of sat back and said, ‘It will happen eventually.’ ” Artists are eligible for induction 25 years after the release of their first single or album. Diamond told Rolling Stone that he was proud to join the institution. “I think it’s great. I’m happy that they recognized me and my work,” he said. “Any club that has Chuck Berry and Little Richard and the Everly Brothers is a club that I want to be a part of.” The 69-year-old crooner best known for hits such as “Cherry, Cherry,” “Sweet Caroline” and “Song Sung Blue” was not nearly as surprised by the honor as Love, who told the magazine that she was on her way to play a private Christmas party in Atlantic City when she found out. “I was just stunned for a minute. … I was laughing and crying at the same time. I’m still on cloud nine,” said Love, who is best known for her work with imprisoned “Wall of Sound” producer Phil Spector on such early 1960s hits as “He’s a Rebel” and “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home).” Related Artists Alice in Chains Neil Diamond

Christina Aguilera Defends Her ‘X Factor’ Performance

‘I don’t think there is such a thing as too raunchy when it comes to the art form of burlesque,’ singer says. By Jocelyn Vena Christina Aguilera Photo: Frederick M. Brown/ Getty Images Christina Aguilera once went by the moniker Xtina, but apparently that didn’t give her permission to be racy when she performed on “The X Factor” this week. The Daily Express reports that her performance of “Express” from her Golden Globe-nominated movie “Burlesque” received more than 1,000 complaints after Aguilera and her dancers shimmied around on the stage provocatively during the prime-time broadcast. But Aguilera is standing by the performance. “I don’t think there is such a thing as too raunchy when it comes to the art form of burlesque,” the singer explained at the U.K. premiere of the film. “It’s very empowering to women to feel confident in their own skin and in their bodies and this represents that. Everyone in the spotlight is judged and there are many opinions out there, but I stick true to what I believe in.” While that performance may have left a bad taste in some people’s mouths, Aguilera also hit the stage with “X Factor” contestant Rebecca Ferguson, who said that performing “Beautiful” with the singer was a career high. “She’s an amazing artist. I was so starstruck,” she told Echo.co.uk . “I still can’t believe I got to sing with her.” Ferguson added that Aguilera helped calm her nerves before the performance. “We rehearsed it through and I was worried I would sing her lyrics, so she said we would work it out onstage. She told me to keep eye contact with her,” she said. “I thought she was really sweet. I liked her. Don’t get me wrong, she was a professional, but at the same time, she didn’t have to record a good luck message for me.” Related Photos The Evolution Of: Christina Aguilera Related Artists Christina Aguilera

Ryan Reynolds And Scarlett Johansson Split

‘We’ve decided to end our marriage,’ Reynolds confirms to MTV News. By Jocelyn Vena Ryan Reynolds and Scarlett Johansson Photo: Kevin Mazur Ryan Reynolds and Scarlett Johansson are separating, MTV News has confirmed. TMZ first reported that the couple had split up and that things are “amicable” between them. As of now, neither has filed for divorce, according to the website, but they are living separately. “After long and careful consideration on both our parts, we’ve decided to end our marriage,” Reynolds said in a statement to MTV News. “We entered our relationship with love and it’s with love and kindness we leave it. While privacy isn’t expected, it’s certainly appreciated.” Us Weekly reports that the split happened about two weeks ago and notes that “the big problem with their relationship is the distance,” a source said, adding, “They spent a lot of time apart when they are working. … She’s been unhappy for a while.” The pair married in 2008 in Canada after being engaged earlier that year, and while they remained relatively private, they have spoken about their love for each other. In the May issue of InStyle, Johansson opened up about being married to the “Green Lantern” star, saying, “I mean, you’re married, and suddenly you have your own family. There’s a nice comfort in that. That part of your life is certain, in a way. You’ve got your home in that other person.” At the Tony Awards in June, when she took the stage to accept her award, she gave a nod to her husband, thanking “the Canadian I live with.” Reynolds told GQ that the actress was “the best part” of his life and even joked about his People Sexiest Man Alive nod, explaining that Johansson would have a different way to ask him to do chores around the house. “Now it’s going to be, ‘Sexiest Man, take out the garbage,’ ” he laughed. “That does sound better.” Related Photos The Way They Were: Ryan Reynolds And Scarlett Johansson

Michael Jackson Producers Defend Posthumous Michael Album

‘Michael mentored me so much to where I kind of knew how to complete his sentences,’ Theron ‘Neff-U’ Feemster tells MTV News of picking up where MJ left off. By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Steven Roberts Michael Jackson’s Michael Photo: Epic Records Michael Jackson ‘s first posthumous album, Michael, has been met with mixed emotions by fans of the King of Pop. Black Eyed Peas frontman will.i.am lashed out at MJ’s estate for commissioning the album, while Akon, a contributor on the project, hailed the effort. Some of the songwriters and producers behind Michael are simply asking people to give it a chance before making a decision. “They’re gonna love the music, because it speaks for itself,” Eddie Cascio, who is credited as a songwriter on “Breaking News,” told MTV News. “Michael sounds great. The songs are great. The production sounds great. Teddy Riley did a phenomenal job finishing off the songs. The quality and production are incredible.” Theron “Neff-U” Feemster agreed. The producer had a hand in three of the album’s 10 tracks, including “Hollywood Tonight” and standouts “(I Like) The Way You Love Me” and “Best of Joy.” Feemster worked with Jackson in the past, as did the majority of the contributors to Michael, which he thinks made the project uniquely authentic despite MJ having little say in the way his tracks were completed. “It wasn’t difficult,” Feemster told MTV News of picking up the rough material. “It was like coloring. It was coloring a frame that was already structured. Michael mentored me so much to where I kind of knew how to complete his sentences. I understood the expectations that he wanted. He wanted to be beyond great. He wanted to give the world a gift, something they’d never heard or seen before. So even after his passing, it was great to have a great team of people to work with who also had experience working with Michael. It made it that much easier. Bringing very creative people together and people who understood his integrity and what he wanted as well, it was great.” What do you think of Michael ? Share your reviews in the comments. Miguel Learns Showmanship From Usher, Mary J. Blige Tours

‘They go out there every night and they give it 100 percent,’ singer says of his tourmates. By Vanessa Denis, with reporting by Steven Roberts Miguel Photo: MTV News “All I Want Is You” singer Miguel began making noise on the road this fall, when he opened up for Mary J. Blige’s Music Saved My Life Tour . From there, he jumped onboard Usher’s OMG Tour , which will end its North American leg on December 31. Both outings have given the 24-year-old up-and-comer a crash course on being a performer. “Coming off the tour with Mary J. Blige and Jazmine Sullivan and El DeBarge, being able to watch them onstage, was such a tremendous learning experience,” Miguel told MTV News. “First of all, the audience is very different demographic-wise from the audience on the OMG Tour, but the one thing that is consistent is that everything changes in every city.” One thing he noticed was how his tourmates don’t let their personal ups and downs affect what they do on the stage. “We all have our own personal circumstances, life, and these people are professionals, and they go out there every night and they give it 100 percent and they connect with their audience,” he observed. “And that’s something that I really, really studied, how they adapted. Adapting to the differences, and the different sound.” After transitioning from Music Saved My Life to OMG, Miguel also had to learn how to connect to the crowd in larger venues. “And now that we’re about halfway through the tour, I think my band and I, we all feel really, really, comfortable being in these venues,” he said. “It’s been a lot of fun, just kind of trying things and augmenting and evolving the show, in order to reach that person way up at the top, as well as the person right down front and center.” As an opening act, Miguel sees a huge value in making a good impression on the audience. “We go out there, and I think we go off stage and the people are impressed,” he said proudly. “If you didn’t know who I am [before the show] … you leave wondering or wanting to know more.” Have you seen Miguel in concert?
