Mariah Carey Performs With Mother On Holiday TV Special

Superstar sang holiday classics and songs from her new Christmas album Merry Christmas II You during concert. By James Dinh Mariah Carey and her mother, Patricia, sing on stage together during ABC’s “Mariah Carey: Merry Christmas to You” Photo: ABC It was an evening full of smiles, snow and festive cheer as Mariah Carey treated fans to an early Christmas gift with her own holiday TV special on Monday night. The ABC broadcast, appropriately titled “Mariah Carey: Merry Christmas to You,” featured the pregnant singer spreading merry joy throughout Los Angeles’s Orpheum Theater with yuletide classics, holiday originals and a first-time onstage performance with her mother, Patricia Carey. Decked out in a Santa-esque minidress, Carey kicked the hour-long broadcast off with her high-energy tune “Oh Santa” — the lead single from her second holiday album, Merry Christmas II You — as a pack of kids happily danced around the singer. “They say it’s unrealistic/ But I believe in you Saint Nick/ So grant this wish for me right quick/ Santa won’t you come and make him mine this Christmas night,” Mariah crooned before the sparkling stage setup. Carey also put her own spin on Christmas classics by mashing them together. “Alright, so we’re going to do a new song … actually a very old song,” she told the roaring crowd. “We created a medley of ‘Little Drummer Boy’ and ‘O Little Town of Bethlehem’ for the new album Merry Christmas II You, and we’re going to play that one for you tonight. And here we go. …” During the number, the singer displayed her vocal acrobatics, including her soothing falsetto, with the assistance of a backing choir before kicking off “O Holy Night,” which she described as one of her “favorite Christmas songs of all time.” Soon after, friend and musical collaborator Randy Jackson joined the singer for a hip-hop-flavored rendition of “Here Comes Santa Claus (Housetop Celebration).” The “American Idol” judge appeared excited to take the stage with the singer as he urged the audience to applaud for “the hottest, the dopest, the bestest … Mariah Carey.” Later on, Carey sang another original, “When Christmas Comes,” which she revealed she’d never performed live. The song draws similarities to her inspirational 2002 song “Fly Like a Bird.” Before a clip from the holiday classic “A Charlie Brown Christmas,” the soon-to-be mother traded the show’s earlier spectacles for a piano and accompanying player for a peaceful rendition of “Christmas Time Is Here” and fan favorite “Joy to the World.” The evening wasn’t just full of jolly anthems though, as the focus turned to Make-a-Wish child Mackenzie, who is in need of a new kidney. Footage of the young girl was shown alongside her adoptive mother, Ronna Williams. After exchanging a few words with her, Carey directed the audience to give a round of applause to Mackenzie and dedicated her “Christmas Time Is in the Air Again” to her. Making the celebration even more memorable was a performance by the singer and her mom, opera singer Patricia Carey, who took the stage together to perform a medley of “O Come All Ye Faithful” and “Hallelujah.” “Please give a big hand to my very special guest. My mother, Patricia Carey, is here tonight,” the songbird said, standing next to her mother. “We’re going to do a song from the new album Merry Christmas II You. This is something that’s very close to both of our hearts.” And if fans ever wondered where Mimi got her vocal talent, it became clear last night. In a singing extravaganza, Patricia took control of the performance as Mariah followed behind with repetition lines until she busted out her signature whistle notes. Carey ended the festivities on a high note (literally), singing her signature holiday classic “All I Want for Christmas Is You” as an entourage of holiday characters danced around the powerhouse diva. The gang offered her a batch of gifts, but the singer kept in tune with the song’s lyrics by pushing their presents aside. As the song ended, the stage was transformed into a winter wonderland as a flood of snow fell atop the stage ceiling and onto Carey and company. Did you catch Mariah’s TV special? Rick Ross, Wiz Khalifa And More Make Our Top Mixtapes Of 2010

Waka Flocka Flame, Lloyd Banks, Wale and Fabolous also made game-changing street CDs, in Mixtape Daily ‘s year-end awards. Jadakiss, Wiz Khalifa and Fabolous Photo: Shareif Ziyadat/ Sean Berry/ Jason Campbell From the looks of things over the past 12 months, the mixtape game has never been healthier. In 2010, the standout projects and the MCs who helmed them took a page out of Drake’s book from the previous year with So Far Gone, making mixtapes that were put together like albums with a majority of head-nodding original material populating the track lists. Look no further than Rick Ross’ Albert Anastasia EP, which featured “B.M.F. (Blowin’ Money Fast)”; the song later landed on his proper LP and recently scored the #4 ranking in MTV News’ Top 25 Songs of 2010 list powered by its appeal on the mixtape circuit. Then there were upstarts like Big K.R.I.T., who delivered a stirring collection that was worthy of a debut album with his K.R.I.T. Wuz Here. The 19-song, self-produced set drew critical praise and eventually earned the Mississippi rhymer a deal with Def Jam Records. As the music industry undergoes more changes and technology erases the line between the labels and the fans, look for more artists to innovate and take their projects (be they official or unofficial) straight to the interwebs (word to Lyor Cohen!). The results could be promising: Fabolous’ The Funeral Service: There Is No Competition 2 was so ill and embraced by the streets that Def Jam turned the mixtape into an EP. Here, Mixtape Daily delivers the Top 10 (plus one) Mixtapes of 2010: Lloyd Banks’ V5 Street Testimony : “Just reflecting back in the studio,” Banks revealed to Mixtape Daily about the inspiration behind his resurgence. “Just going back. People always say, ‘Go back to your first album.’ I went back further than that. All the success came from [my early mixtapes] Money in the Bank, Money in the Bank Part 2 all the way to Part 4. I was like, ‘You know what? I did that in a matter of two years.’ I said, ‘I’mma do what I did in two years in one.’ … By the time I got to V5, it was a good five or six months between tapes. I didn’t plan it like that. I just never stopped recording and touring. By the time V5 came, I felt a little pressure. I told them it was gonna get better every time. I think people embraced it.” Big K.R.I.T.’s K.R.I.T. Wuz Here Street Testimony : “People can see the growth from when I first did my first project until now,” K.R.I.T. told Mixtape Daily when we named him a Fire Starter in June. “And they can see the growth and me really finding myself as an artist. And really not compromising my creative mind frame for what’s going on in the industry and just being myself and putting the music out. The first record is ‘Return of 4eva.’ It was really just telling the game we here on some Southern hip-hop and this is us. And this is the type of music that I’m gonna put out. And I just hope that people can relate to it and respect it.” Cam’ron and Vado’s Boss of All Bosses 2.5 Street Testimony : “At first, it was like the lost tapes. Tracks that were throwaways. Then we added more flavor to it,” Vado told us about the set. “What happened with the 2.5, ” Cam added, “we gave Drama maybe 25 songs [for Boss of All Bosses 2 ]. He was like, ‘You might as well come back with 2.5 in two weeks.’ But we were doing so much new music, we might as well call it 4.8. It’s crazy. It’s about 20 songs.” Fabolous’ The Funeral Service: There Is No Competition 2 Street Testimony : “It’s really incredible how people will connect with the work,” Fab said to us during our Midseason Salute . “I think we put a lot of work into it, with the whole funeral theme. We didn’t just say it and you had to daydream it. We went into the funeral homes. We picked caskets out for the competition. Def Jam, this summer, is gonna put the mixtape out as an EP. So I did about four new songs, put ’em with some of the original joints from the mixtape. We got more viral videos coming. We just gonna keep it going and let it end as the classic it is. A lot of people saying it’s a classic, one of the, if not the best mixtape of 2010. It’s crazy to me, because it started out as something I wanted to give free to the fans and people who accept my work. Def Jam even came in and said, ‘Whoa, we gotta get a piece.’ It’s a good thing, man.” J. Cole’s Friday Night Lights Street Testimony : “I just tried to make the best project I could make,” Cole told us over the phone days after he dropped FNL. “Pick the best songs, and some of those songs were songs I really had to bite the bullet and sacrifice and not put them on my album, ’cause I knew it would make the tape better. I had to figure out what songs I was willing to let go of and then make the best story, in terms of sequencing. It reminded me of when we were putting together The Warm Up. I’m just in a different place now. It was just time for new music.” Jadakiss’ The Champ Is Here 3 Street Testimony : “The regular formula for the first two was drop the mixtape right when I finished the album,” Jada told us when he previewed the project exclusively for Mixtape Daily. “I just shifted it on you this time: Give you the mixtape then go finish the album. Let you compare it with the albums that’s coming out while I’m in the kitchen. It’ll just be creating pandemonium everywhere instead of competing with my own album. It might be better to do it this way. We gonna keep switching it around. We might do another one this way, but we gonna switch the pattern up so they can’t follow.” L.E.P. Bogus Boys’ Don’t Feed Da Killaz, Vol. 3 Street Testimony : “I penned the term ‘quality street music’ like five years ago, and it’s good to see it’s still alive,” tape host DJ Drama told Mixtape Daily in October. “And normally, I tell you guys don’t be afraid, don’t be scared but, um, since we coming out on [Halloween], I think you should be scared.” Rick Ross’ The Albert Anastasia EP Street Testimony : “It’s more than just an extended play,” Ross explained to Mixtape Daily. “Because when I started recording and it was sounding too good, I wanted to put more songs in there than what I wanted to initially. But it’s The Albert Anastasia EP. I named it that because Albert Anastasia was a self-made man. He was a boss. He was a lot less celebrated. He was more focused on getting his job done, handling his business. Of course, he ultimately came to an untimely demise. But I feel when it’s time to go, it’s always untimely, so what’s the difference?” Waka Flocka Flame’s LeBron Flocka James 2 Street Testimony : “I’m not going lyrical, hard in the studio,” Waka said about his rowdy rhymes . “It ain’t time for me to do that. This ain’t no album; this is my mixtapes. Why I gotta go spend 30 hours [writing rhymes] off of a mixtape? Then I got other people dissing me for saying that. You crazy. You giving me that much time out of 24 hours, you not doing your job. That’s my word to you.” Wale’s More About Nothing Street Testimony : “That’s why you hear that vigor and hunger in my voice while I’m rapping,” Wale told Mixtape Daily about this project. “I was trying to go super crazy in the booth to let them know that the hunger is still there. It’s to my label, the fans, to the doubters. I’m trying to prove myself. A lot of people try to reinvent themselves. I’m trying to define myself. It’s almost like it was a rough draft of my mission statement before, but this is the final draft. If y’all didn’t know who Wale was before, you know now. And the play on ‘nothing’ is that a lot of people are saying nothin’, but we’re saying somethin’ now.” Wiz Khalifa’s Kush & Orange Juice Street Testimony : “I named the mixtape Kush & Orange Juice because, in a nutshell, I tried to match up a name that goes perfect with the tape,” Wiz explained to us earlier this year. “It’s perfect for wake-and-bake, if that’s what you’re into. Anybody who knows me knows that’s what I specialize in. It came out Kush & Orange Juice. That’s the formula. Fruits and vegetables. The tape is heavily inspired by all different types of herbs and wonderful green things that make us grow.” Did we miss anything? Share your picks for the best mixtapes of 2010 in the comments! Selena Gomez Talks Justin Bieber Pancake Outing

Gomez bats away rumors of romance, saying, ‘We were both performing in the same place so we went and had pancakes together.’ By Mawuse Ziegbe, with reporting by Jim Cantiello Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez (file) Photo: Kevin Mazur/ WireImage Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber have been pals for a while, but rumors that the teen stars are more than friends ramped up when the pair were recently spotted getting pancakes arm-in-arm. Despite the mild PDA, Gomez denied there were any romantic overtones to the outing, saying instead that the duo were just getting a quick bite eat while they both had some free time in Philadelphia. “It was pancakes. Who doesn’t like pancakes?” Gomez told MTV News at the Jingle Ball 2010 in New York Friday, where she and the Biebs both hit the stage. “We were both performing in the same place so we went and had pancakes together. That’s all it is. All innocent.” In fact, Gomez has said the Canadian teen idol is more a brother and than a lover, explaining in February that she started looking out for Bieber as he started his journey toward superstardom. “I love Justin. When he first started to come over from Canada his manager contacted me and he just said that he would like to meet me and he was just such a good kid,” she explained. “And I feel like a big sister now, ’cause I want to protect him. So I’m always very cautious with him, but he is so talented and he’s so sweet, so that just started us wanting to work together. Now he’s just become one of my good friends.” Gomez is also rooting for her good friend at the 2011 Grammys where the pop sensation is up for two trophies, including Best New Artist. When asked who she thinks would take home the hardware between Bieber and fellow Canadian heartthrob Drake, Gomez put her money on the “Baby” crooner. “I would have to say Bieber just because I know how hard he works,” she told MTV News earlier this week. “I hope he wins, but I love Drake as well. It’s a really hard category so I don’t know who’s going to win, but of course I have to say Bieber.” What do you think Selena Gomez’ comments about Justin Bieber? Let us know in the comments! Justin Bieber, Selena Gomez, Katy Perry Rock Jingle Ball

Madison Square Garden concert also featured Enrique Iglesias, B.o.B. By Jocelyn Vena Justin Bieber performs at “Jingle Ball 2010” Photo: Bryan Bedder/Getty Images NEW YORK — At 7:30 p.m. on the nose, the house lights went down, the girls went crazy, and Jingle Ball 2010 got the party started Friday (December 10) for a rousing night of music and fun at Madison Square Garden. Kim Kardashian, in a white body-hugging dress, kicked off the night’s festivities by noting that it was her first time ever at MSG, then bringing Taio Cruz to the stage. He played “Break Your Heart” and “Dynamite,” and for his track “Higher,” he was joined by Travie McCoy, though the song usually features British pop princess Kylie Minogue. Jesse McCartney was on hand to proudly invite Bruno Mars to the stage. The Grammy nominee played drums for an excited crowd. He played “Billionaire,” and the entire room sang along as McCoy joined him for their ode to getting famous. The crowd ate it up. He then slowed it down with “Grenade.” The set ended with “Just the Way You Are” to the delight of the crowd. Jay Sean beat-boxed, then helped introduce Paramore to the stage. The band brought some loud, boombastic rock to the show thanks to a set that included “Brick by Boring Brick.” “Anybody else care to join the party tonight?” frontwoman Hayley Williams asked the crowd before blaring out “Misery” and inviting a fan onstage to sing with her. They finished it off with “The Only Exception.” B.o.B was next to the stage. The rapper got real with his track “Don’t Let Me Fall.” Then the crowd went insane for “Magic.” As if that didn’t get the girls hyped enough, Bruno Mars returned for “Beautiful Girls.” “Everybody put your hands up,” B.o.B told the crowd before playing his massive “Airplanes” with Williams by his side. The crowd went nuts when Flo Rida introduced Selena Gomez for her dance-tastic performance of “Round and Round.” Gomez looked like a true disco queen in her little black dress and heels. She thanked Katy Perry for her next track, “Rock God,” then got trancey for her song “A Year Without Rain,” and ended her set with “Naturally,” crediting it as the reason she got a spot on the radio tour. The show took an adult contemporary and old school turn when Michael Buble arrived to croon tunes such as “Hollywood” and “Haven’t Met You Yet,” and for “Let it Snow,” he got in the crowd and paid homage to the season, dusting MSG with snow confetti. Katy Perry brought the girl power in her performance, which featured ballerinas, Christmas trees, Santa Clauses and Perry popping out of a gift box in a latex toy soldier costume for “Hot n Cold.” “This is Madison Square Garden!” she shouted to the crowd. “This is something I’ve dreamt about for a long time.” “This next song is about falling in love with a foreigner, like far away … Not even in England,” she said to introduce “E.T.” After a jazzy version of “I Kissed a Girl,” she proudly proclaimed, “Let’s dedicate this West Coast anthem to the East Coast right now,” ending her performance with “California Gurls” as red and green confetti fell from the ceiling. Pauly D prompted the loudest screams of the night when he introduced Enrique Iglesias. The Latin pop star played the clean version of “Tonight,” followed by older jams such as “Escape” and “Hero,” serenading a girl from the audience. With the swooning complete, Iglesias ended with fan favorite “I Like It.” Kardashian returned, telling the crowd, “I think I’m catching a fever,” before the night’s most-anticipated performance: Justin Bieber. In a plaid top and khakis, the teen star got his party started with “Somebody to Love.” Bieber was in full swagga mode, dancing like a seasoned pro and getting the crowd hyped. “The last time I was here for Jingle Ball, I had a broken foot, and this year, I’m here and both my limbs are working,” he joked. “We shot a movie here, and it’s coming out in February, and I think we should show you a preview.” The trailer transitioned to “Never Say Never.” Bieber even brought out a surprise guest, Jayden Smith, to join him. “I had someone who’s really special to me, and I decided to bring him out,” he then announced, calling for Sean Kingston for “Eenie Meenie.” The girls went crazy as the pals went back and forth on the cut. “I think I want to slow it down a little bit. My acoustic album had an extra song on it that’s really important to me. But first, I need everyone to close their eyes and ‘Pray,’ ” he said before the inspirational ballad. He then teased the excited crowd, saying, “I think we should do one more song,” and listing some of his track names. He settled on “Baby.” “Who wants to be my baby?” he asked. He ended the night with showers of fireworks and confetti, saying, “You guys are amazing.” Did you go to Jingle Ball 2010? Give us your review in the comments below! Dr. Dre’s ‘Kush’ Video And Other Comeback Clips

Like memorable videos from Jay-Z, Eminem and T.I., the legendary producer’s latest work heralds his return to the game. By Paul Cantor Dr. Dre Photo: Johnny Nunez/ WireImage Dr. Dre’s video for “Kush,” the lead single off Detox, hit the Net on Friday (December 10), and the clip seems to confirm the much-delayed album will be released in the near future. It’s only been a little more than a decade since the doctor dropped his last project, after all. But seeing the new video, featuring Snoop Dogg and Akon, brought to mind some other recent comeback stories in hip-hop. Here, we give you a rundown of the videos that accompanied them. Eminem, “We Made You” Released in 2009, “We Made You” was Marshall Mathers’ first solo look since his ’05 Encore album. In a sense, he picked up right where he left off, bashing celebrities and mocking the public’s love affair with pop culture. But the plan backfired, and Em left the impression that the only one obsessed with pop culture — dated pop culture, at that — was Em. As a result, his Relapse was critically panned as a comeback album; it wasn’t until this year’s Recovery that Eminem truly re-established his place in music . Jay-Z, “Show Me What You Got” Hov announced his retirement from rap as a solo artist in 2003 with The Black Album. But only three years later, he returned with a new album, Kingdom Come and a video for its lead single, “Show Me What You Got.” The Just Blaze-produced track compelled director F. Gary Gray, known for being selective about his projects, to helm the video. Filmed it in Monaco, Jay enlisted race car drivers Danica Patrick and Dale Earnhardt Jr for the well-received clip. Kanye West, “Power” Inspired by director Marco Brambilla’s “Civilization” installation at New York’s Standard Hotel, the video for ‘Ye’s “Power” was dubbed “Portrait of Power.” Less a music video than a piece of moving art, the visual showed Kanye surrounded by angels and assorted religious imagery. Coming off “Taylor-gate,” its epic quality matched the brooding scope of the song and it proved to be the right approach as critics and fans alike, lapped it up. T.I., “I’m Back” T.I. had served out a yearlong prison stint, when he returned in April with “I’m Back.” The video found the Atlanta rapper getting reacquainted with his life on the outside, namely foreign cars, expensive jewelry and the ‘hood. Rapping with an American flag as the backdrop, Tip seemed to be saying, ‘I’m still a shining example of the American Dream.’ Or, perhaps it was an allusion to career plans gone awry, an American Dream deferred. The MC’s comeback has hit some speed bumps, as his No Mercy album was released this week while the rapper serves out a new 11-month prison sentence. Dr. Dre “Still D.R.E.” “Kush” isn’t the first video Dre made fans wait umpteen years for. The super-producer did the same with “Still D.R.E.,” which was the lead song from 1999’s The Chronic 2001. It had been seven years since he’d dropped The Chronic. Clearly, Dre likes to take his time. Lauryn Hill Set To Perform String Of East Coast Concerts

The reclusive singer will hit the stage for stops in Boston, New York and Miami beginning December 20. By Rebecca Thomas Lauryn Hill Photo: Taylor Hill/Getty Images Lauryn Hill is inching closer to a comeback. At this summer’s Rock the Bells, the reclusive raptress emerged for four tour stops, giving front-to-back performances of her classic debut, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, almost a dozen years to the day after its release. Now, L-Boogie is set to meet her hungry public again with a grip of shows along the East Coast. According to Brooklyn Vegan , Hill will hit Boston, New York, and Miami for a string of shows beginning December 20. She’ll make stops at Brooklyn’s Music Hall of Williamsburg at the end of the month, and the Bowery Ballroom in New York City on New Year’s Day. The “Ex-Factor” singer will then resume the jaunt in the spring with a pair of performances in the Magic City as part of Miami’s Jazz in the Gardens Festival. Tickets for the first trio of shows went on sale on Friday (December 10); no additional dates have been announced. At this summer’s Rock the Bells, Hill chuckled when we asked her about a due date for fresh material, but told MTV News, “We’re getting closer. That’s all I can say.” The ex-Fugees frontwoman, who became something of a voice for a generation of pre-millennium girls drawn to her cerebral brand of rap&B, shunned the limelight not long after the jaw-dropping success of her debut. But in August, she remarked that the industry had changed in recent years, adding that she was feeling sparked by how eclectic music in the age of MP3s was sounding. “You got a lot of young talent out there,” Hill observed. “Because we don’t necessarily have the same sort of industry complex that used to exist, people don’t always give, I want to say, proper respect to. But they’re doing it in a really kind of unusual, unique and hard-core way.” Lauryn Hill tour dates, according to Brooklyn Vegan:
