Jay-Z, Eminem Joined By Kanye West, Beyonce More At Yankee Stadium

Drake, Chris Martin, Nicki Minaj also appear at first New York stop of Home and Home tour. By Shaheem Reid Eminem and Jay-Z perform at Yankee Stadium on Monday Photo: Kevin Mazur/ WireImage NEW YORK — A year ago, Jay-Z showed why he’s music’s Emperor of the Empire State with a historic charity concert at Madison Square Garden , which Jay called “the house that Hovie built.” On Monday night, “the God MC” took his mastery of performance to the front stoop of Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez, Yankee Stadium. And because that’s no setting in which to go small, he brought out special guests like Kanye West, Drake, Chris Martin, Swizz Beatz, Nicki Minaj and, of course, Beyonc#233;. After kicking off in Detroit two weeks ago, Jay and Eminem’s Home and Home concerts landed on the Jiggaman’s soil for shows on Monday and Tuesday (September 14). This time, after J. Cole opened , Slim Shady shook the stadium in the second slot, with special guests the G-Unit and Dr. Dre. Then Jay took over with a bevy of surprises and a catalog of hard-line hits. “Before I start this piece, let me say, rest in peace to the boss, George [Steinbrenner],” Hov began, freestyling a reference to the late Yankees owner after commencing his program with the “Dynasty Intro.” “By the time we sliding home/ I hope we playing in the dome,” he continued rapping. During “Run This Town,” Jay asked, “Where you at, boy?” And out came 2010 VMA closer Kanye West in a red suit. The roar was thunderous for the Louis Vuitton Don, who also rocked a huge gold link chain. They followed up with the first live performance of the “Power” remix — where all 50,000-plus people did the soulful “power clap” — and “Monster.” There was no Rick Ross on the latter, but ‘Ye and Hov brought out Nicki Minaj, who was showered with love from her hometown. Hov said that since they were in New York, he couldn’t let Kanye off the hook that easy. West told the audience he was going to “take them back.” The Chicago-born icon then crushed the concert with “Can’t Tell Me Nothing” and a follow-up haymaker of the stadium friendly “Good Life.” “It’s one of the most unbelievable feelings in the world, being from New York and being in Yankee stadium,” Jay said about the night. “That’s how you feel, New York City?” Hov continued, in response to the crowd’s overwhelming cheers. “New York City, is that how you feel tonight? I can’t believe this sh–!” Jay’s next guest was Bronx native Swizz Beatz, who was also celebrating his birthday. What a present! Further along in his set list, Jay rolled out his jaw-dropping verse from “Free Mason.” Like in most of shows, the Jiggaman constantly spoke to the crowd. “Just because you question religion doesn’t mean you don’t believe in God,” he said after his rumor-admonishing verse. “Don’t let anybody scare you into having their beliefs. Be a muthaf—in- renegade.” Out came Eminem for their classic colossal meeting of the minds. No matter how many times they perform the track, it’s still surreal to see the two biggest names in rap stand unified, side by side. Memphis Bleek then came out for a parade of familiar Jay knockers, including “U Don’t Know,” “99 Problems” and “Big Pimpin’.” There was a tribute to hip-hop’s passed away greats that included B.I.G., D12’s Proof, Pimp C and Tupac Shakur. Monday was the 14th anniversary of Pac’s tragic death. Chris Martin from Coldplay came out to sing the hook on “Heart of the City.” Martin was crisp and soulful on the mic. Jay kicked the graceful lines to “Most Kingz,” and then Martin took the energy up a few levels with “Viva la Vida.” “I used to rule the world,” the crowd sang. “Seas would rise/ When I gave the word/ Now in the morning I sleep alone/ Sweep the streets I used to own/ I used to roll the dice/ Feel the fear in my enemy’s eyes.” Hov then told his DJ to throw on any song, and out came Drake for “Miss Me.” “Tellllllll me/ What’s really going / Drizzy back up in this bitch/ What’s happenin!!!” Drake came on rapping. The approval for the 23-year-old was vibrant. “Say, ‘Free Weezy!’ ” Drake commanded during Lil Wayne’s verse. Jay and Drizzy then let the mics explode with “Light Up.” Not letting the audience catch their breath, Beyonc

Lady Gaga’s VMA Outfits: Fashion Week Attendees Weigh In

‘She is like a work of art!’ ‘Behind the Velvet Ropes’ hostess Lauren Ezersky says. By Christopher MacAllister Lady Gaga at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards Photo: WireImage NEW YORK — Even though Lady Gaga managed to cut down her costume changes from last year’s Video Music Awards to just three for the 2010 Video Music Awards , they still sparked the interest of many who turned up and tuned in. We asked the opinions some New York Fashion Week attendees which of the three costumes was their favorite. Lisa Liu perceived her arrival outfit , designed by Alexander McQueen, as “her tamest outfit of the evening. But I thought it looked very Lady Gaga.” Becky Boudwyn described her as “an out-of-control couture Pocahontas.” “Behind the Velvet Ropes” hostess Lauren Ezersky said, “She is like a work of art! When I look at her, it’s almost like looking at a painting by an old master. … When you look at her, you can’t just look once, there’s always something else to see! I love her first outfit, I just love it!” This dress was seen as the favorite by many, including Chris Futrell, who praised the fact that it was “very detailed oriented.” When we brought up outfit number two , people were not afraid to mention the fact that Gaga could barely walk in it. It was praised by Teasea and Duane Bennett as being “quite exquisite” and “very gothic,” but was disliked by fashion stylist Celine Griscom, who described it as “slightly dumpy … doesn’t have enough leanness to it,” and Ayoka Lucas, who said, “It’s not flattering to her body at all, unfortunately!” The third and final dress, the controversial meat dress , definitely left a bad taste in people’s mouths as reactions were unified in perceiving this dress as “something different and something you would not see at an awards show such as the VMAs” (Chris Futrell). Lauren Ezersky praised the dress, joking that “She’s cookin! In fact, she needs to cook! … I love the look of it, but I’m not quite sure if I would want to sit next to her! How would they bring that to her? Like, in a freezer!? I don’t know! I think it’s totally cool! You go, girl!” The speculation about whether or not it was real meat was not lost on Lisa Liu, who noticed that no one was “shy to hug her so I wasn’t sure if it was real meat.” Most people shared the opinion of Teasea Bennett, who said, “I think she was able to pull it off. I wasn’t too fond of that one, to be honest, but it suited her! I think it suited Gaga. She can pull anything off! Even a bag, a plain plastic bag, she’d rock that!” Lauren Ezersky summarized her opinion of Gaga’s fashion choices, saying, “She gives young people inspiration that it’s OK to be different, it’s OK to look the way you want to look.” And in relation to the recent passing of Alexander McQueen, the designer of the first two dresses, Ezersky pointed out, “It was a beautiful homage to him because we all really miss him in this industry. I got to meet him one time and he was an amazing artistic genius. … She will bring out the new Alexander McQueen. She’ll find them and wear them.” The Moonmen have all been handed out and the stars have gone home, but there’s plenty of 2010 MTV Video Music Awards news, interviews, behind-the-scenes scoop, party reports and more still to come, so keep it locked on MTVNews.com. Rihanna, Cher, Katy Perry, More Stars Tweet About VMAs

Diddy promises to set the ‘stage on fire’ as a performer next year. By Josh Wigler Rihanna performs at the 2010 VMAs Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images Although the curtains have closed on the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards , the show goes on in the form of Twitter reactions from the various celebrities in attendance Sunday night. From the show’s various performers to mere spectators out in the crowd, just about everybody has had something to say about this year’s event. The first big surprise of the show occurred when Rihanna unexpectedly arrived to sing “Love the Way You Lie” opposite Eminem. The R&B artist wasn’t expected to appear at the VMAs, but Rihanna stormed the stage nonetheless, later explaining to her fans on Twitter : “SURPRISE!!! Just had to do it guys.” Rihanna’s performance alongside Slim Shady was considered one of the highlights of the night, especially for Paramore vocalist Hayley Williams. “The best thing was seeing Eminem live,” she wrote , “and being only a few feet away from Gaga.” Indeed, it was hard not to notice Lady G, what with her eight VMA victories and her now-infamous meat dress . Legendary singer and actress Cher got an up-close glimpse at Gaga’s controversial wardrobe, describing it as “interesting” and “amazing.” “The way it was cut and fitted to her body was amazing! The meat purse was genius,” she assessed . “As [an] art piece, it was astonishing!” The show moved along at a brisk pace, thanks to the hilarious work of host Chelsea Handler, though there was at least one attendee pining for last year’s host, Russell Brand. “California Gurls” singer Katy Perry, who began her relationship with Brand at the VMAs in 2009, offered a tribute to her fianc

Best Rock Video winners found themselves strewn in glitter when arriving at the VMAs Sunday night. When MTV News caught up with the band as they hit the white carpet, frontman Jared Leto explained that they had not only braved L.A. traffic for their entrance, they also endured an explosion of sorts. “We were in the middle of a glitter bomb. The entrance was fun and chaotic and crazy.”

Tupac Remembered By Rick Ross, Paul Wall, Zaytoven

‘ ‘Pac was our prophet,’ Gorilla Zoe tells MTV News 14 years after iconic MC’s death. By Shaheem Reid Tupac Shakur Photo: Steve Granitz/ Wireimage It’s one of the moments you just don’t forget. Most hip-hop fans can remember exactly where they were when they heard Tupac Skakur died, 14 years ago on September 13. While celebrating the 2010 VMAs in Los Angeles over the weekend, some of your favorite artists took time out to remember one of music’s biggest icons. “I’m from Carol City, and in Carol City we got a park [where] if somebody passes away, we go to the park,” Rick Ross told MTV News. “So if something happen, we split up, go to the park. So I’ll never forget: I was coming home and riding by the park. I saw all my homies, Chevys lined up. I was like, ‘Damn, somebody died.’ ” Ross said had just been at the park a week prior mourning the loss of a childhood friend, Little Pete, who was killed in a vehicular accident. The day ‘Pac died, Ross had d

‘Too bad she didn’t wear it with a grill,’ Nylon ‘s Faran Krentcil quips By Jocelyn Vena Lady Gaga at the 2010 VMAs Photo: Kevin Mazur/ Getty Images Lady Gaga wore several very interesting outfits to the VMAs on Sunday night. While she went glam in two creations (one by Alexander McQueen and one by Giorgio Armani), she was more grisly in her meat dress, shoes, bag and hat, designed by Franc Fernandez and put together by her frequent stylist, Nicola Formichetti. The look had the fashion world buzzing by Monday morning, spawning blog headlines such as, “Was it offensive or awesome?” “Too bad she didn’t wear it with a grill,” Nylon digital director Faran Krentcil told MTV News in an e-mail about the gutsy design that echoes the bikini Gaga wore on the cover of Vogue Hommes Japan. Kelly Cutrone was all about the look. “I don’t get it what’s the beef with Gaga — Gaga is the Queen of the Universe, and no one should say anything negative about her or they will be attacked by her millions of fans,” the PR maven and star of “The City” told MTV News. “I am happy to see her looking so healthy and to see she put a little extra meat on!” Meanwhile, TV personality and “Telephone” co-star Jai Rodriguez commented that Gaga is creating a professional challenge for him. “Well, I am currently playing a character where the script says, ‘Take it a step further than Gaga would,’ ” he explained. “I’m no longer sure that’s possible after last night’s dinner frock.” Food was certainly on other fashion-minded folks’ minds. “It’s creepy and amazing at the same time, but I know what I won’t be eating today,” Fashion Critic wrote on RedCarpet-FashionAwards.com . Taylor Swift, Kanye West Have Critics Debating VMAs Again

The media weighs in on what ‘Innocent’ and ‘Runaway’ are saying about last year’s incident. By Paul Cantor Taylor Swift and Kanye West at the 2010 Video Music Awards Photo: Kevin Winter/ Kevin Mazur/ Getty Images/ WireImage Oscar Wilde once wrote, “Always forgive your enemies; nothing annoys them so much.” Taylor Swift definitely got that memo. At the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards, she seemed to be forgiving someone, maybe Kanye West , as she crooned, “Who you are is not what you did. … You’re still an innocent.” Kanye, who apologized to Swift via Twitter earlier this month, seemed to be acknowledging his wrongdoing in the lyrics of his new song, “Runaway.” Though the pair didn’t appear onstage together on Sunday night, as some hoped, many in the media took the opportunity to weigh in on whether the evening’s performances had settled the score between them. “She seems to have forgiven him,” Jennifer Armstrong wrote in Entertainment Weekly. “She looked gorgeous, as she is wont to do, but, um, the actual song was a pretty opaque.” Kanye’s performance was looked upon more favorably. “It was a complete victory,” EW ‘s Brad Wete wrote, “addressing his character flaws and acknowledging public opinion without relinquishing any of his power.” Spin ‘s Steve Kandell thinks the two stars reluctantly met somewhere in the middle. “Kanye implored a toast to the douche bags and jerkoffs, among whom he undoubtedly counts himself, albeit with reservations,” he wrote. “She thinks he isn’t what he did, but he’s putting the lie to that — no, I am that, it’s just a shame you got in the crossfire. But, to paraphrase another great poet of the VMA era, he’s not that innocent.” Over at The New York Times, Jon Caramanica wrote of West, “Wearing a red suit, he looked amateurish and vulnerable, and also affecting. At the end, Mr. West’s knowing, bombastic humility won.” With respect to Taylor Swift, Caramanica continued, “Ms. Swift — a victim, but no na

Lady Gaga’s ‘Bad Romance’ Director Recalls Video’s ‘Explosion’

Francis Lawrence-directed clip took home Video of the Year at VMAs. By Adam Rosenberg Lady Gaga at the 2010 Video Music Awards Photo: Kevin Mazur/ Getty Images As the top-nominated artist at Sunday night’s 2010 MTV Video Music Awards , pop sensation Lady Gaga’s “little monsters” were tuned in to witness her triumphs — and they weren’t disappointed. Gaga took home eight Moonmen, including the evening’s top prize for Video of the Year . Director Francis Lawrence was also honored for his work on “Bad Romance,” though even with work for artists like Britney Spears, Will Smith and Aerosmith behind him, he admitted that nothing he’s done compares with the fervor generated by the night’s top-winning video. “I’ve been doing it a long time, but I’ve never really experienced an explosion with a video like this, where people so eagerly awaited it and it blew up on YouTube instantly,” he explained. “For a while, until the Justin Bieber video came out , it was the most-viewed video on YouTube.” Lawrence admitted that he would love to work with Gaga again, though his increased focus in recent years on Hollywood features, such as “I Am Legend” or the upcoming Robert Pattinson/ Reese Witherspoon-starring adaptation “Water for Elephants” leaves his schedule pretty packed. “I haven’t [heard from her], because I pretty much became unavailable right after [the ‘Bad Romance’] shoot,” he said. “But if she had a new song and wanted to do something, I would do it in a second. She was really fun to work with.” Lawrence’s interest in working with Gaga again can largely be credited to the pop star’s own passion for a well-made music video, a fact that is evident in all of her work. “She loves the art form of music videos and she is a real creative partner and has great ideas and really cool and unique tastes. She has a great team working with her as well, helping build really fantastic things that she wears,” he explained. “She works hard, she shows up on time and she’s pretty spontaneous… it was great.” “Bad Romance” is an excellent example of this. Lawrence and Gaga each had their own ideas for how the video ought to look. They met, discussed it and collaborated to produce a shared vision, one that incorporated ideas from both sides. Even when the plan changed, there was still a clear idea of what to do and how to do it. “Originally I was gonna shoot [‘Bad Romance’] in New York and we were gonna shoot it on location. There were more exteriors and things like that,” Lawrence said. “And then because of budgetary restraints and because of her schedule, we moved it to Los Angeles and the setting changed and it all just became that one interior space, but the basic idea and the concept of the video stayed pretty much the same.” On those “budgetary restraints,” Lawrence freely admits that times have changed. “Years ago, when I was really making [music videos], before I was making movies, budgets would be over a million dollars,” he said. “Bad Romance” featured no product placement, but he said the reason we see such things in music videos these days is that it allows for bigger budgets — which makes the Gaga video all the more impressive. “It was a two-day shoot,” he said. “We spent two 14-hour days shooting.” Were you happy “Bad Romance” took home Video of the Year? ‘Jersey Shore’ Star Vinny Wants To Meet Selena Gomez ‘If She’s 18’

Vinny tries to make a date with the Disney star at the VMAs. By Jocelyn Vena, with additional reporting by James Montgomery Selena Gomez attends the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards Photo: Jeffrey Mayer/WireImage The VMAs are a place for celebrities to meet up or perhaps meet for the first time. For instance, Justin Bieber got the chance to catch up with pals Katy Perry and Rihanna. So, when MTV News caught up with Vinny from “Jersey Shore” on the VMA white carpet, we asked who he wanted to meet at the big show. He told us he had his sights set on one Disney princess. ” Selena Gomez ,” Vinny said, quickly adding, “if she’s 18.” Lucky for Vinny, Gomez turned 18 earlier this year. However, Vinny may not be happy to hear Gomez’s reaction to his flirtatious advances. “I am [a big ‘Jersey Shore’ fan],” she said. When told that the “Jersey Shore” star wanted to meet her “if she’s 18,” she replied, “Tonight, I’m not 18! My mom would kill me! I will say I am a very big fan though, a very big fan, and I do look forward to meeting them, but that’s as far as it goes.” While Vinny’s dream to meet Gomez may not have come to fruition, an exclusive clip from this season of “Jersey Shore” debuted during the VMAs, and it seems that Snooki and Angelina don’t share the same polite admiration for each other that Selena and Vinny have for one another. In the clip, drama ensues after a guy Snooki brought home seems to gravitate to or get hit on by Angelina. Snooki explains that it’s not the first time she and Angelina have both pursued the same guy. The spat prompts Angelina to vent her feelings about the entire cast. “I don’t give a f— about anybody in this house. All of yous in this house are f—ing fake. And I want you all to know that I can’t stand any of yous. Fake mother—-ers, all of you.” The Moonmen have all been handed out and the stars have gone home, but there’s plenty of 2010 MTV Video Music Awards news, interviews, behind-the-scenes scoop, party reports and more still to come, so keep it locked on MTVNews.com.
