Carly Rae Jepsen Thinks ‘Call Me Maybe’ Viral Videos Are ‘Rad’

‘It makes my day to see it,’ Jepsen tells MTV News about clips by everyone from Justin Bieber to the Harvard baseball team. By Christina Garibaldi Carly Rae Jepsen Photo: MTV News It’s been just a few months since Justin Bieber signed Canadian singer Carly Rae Jepsen to his Schoolboy Records, but since then, she has certainly made her mark on the music scene. Her infectious hit single “Call Me Maybe” is currently #1 on the iTunes songs chart and #4 on Billboard ‘s Hot 100 chart and has spawned a barrage of humorous and entertaining online video parodies that have captured the attention of not only fans but Jepsen herself. “I have seen a few. It’s pretty rad that people are participating and making their own versions. It makes my day to see it,” Jepsen told MTV News. “It’s hard to imagine this, even though I’m living this every day, it’s kind of hard to believe it sometimes. [I] definitely didn’t predict this.” The online lip-synching parodies seem to be the latest craze, especially among college students. Sports teams from Duke, UConn, Syracuse and Southern Methodist University have all posted their own versions of the song, but it was taken to another level when the Harvard baseball team choreographed an intricate fist-pump dance while singing along to the single. “I saw the fist pump, it was so cute. It was funny because every chorus, they added a new element. I was like, they really planned this out, this is so fantastic,” Jepsen said of the Harvard video. “It’s so cool that it’s sort of sparked this online thing. It’s really neat.” College students aren’t the only ones obsessing over this song. Actor James Franco posted his own version of the song , and just last month, Katy Perry uploaded her own parody , featuring herself and a group of friends at a Coachella pool party. “I was in London at the time I saw Katy’s version of ‘Call Me Maybe.’ I think she was at Coachella when she shot it, which was really cool,” Jepsen said. “It was another surreal moment: Being in London was already crazy and then on top of it, to kind of see all the stars were reaching out and doing their versions as well, it was kind of like a cherry on top of the whole thing.” We may have to thank Bieber for all of these videos since he is the one that started the trend. Back in February, Bieber, along with his girlfriend Selena Gomez, Ashley Tisdale and Big Time Rush, created his own music video , playfully singing along to the inescapable track. “I have a long list of thank-yous that I owe to Justin for everything to do with my career,” Jepsen said. “He’s just kind of opened the door to the rest of the world to me.” Which “Call Me Maybe” parody is your favorite? Bono’s Billion-Dollar Facebook IPO Haul: By The Numbers

You could buy nearly seven million pair of Bulgari Bono sunglasses with the cash. By Gil Kaufman U2’s Bono Photo: D. Dipasupil/ WireImage U2 singer Bono was already an obscenely wealthy man before Friday’s (May 18) Facebook IPO
. But thanks to the 2.3 percent stake in the social networking site held by his Elevation Partners investment group (it is unknown how much of the Facebook take is directly held by Bono) it was reported that his nest egg could grow exponentially when Friday’s first day of trading on the company’s stock is over. The total haul? More than $1.5 billion
, which is not bad for a day’s work. If those figures are true, he may become the richest rock star on Earth, sitting on a massive pile of green that could allow a man who already had the world at his fingertips to push into a rarified stratosphere that’s the envy of the many one-percenters he already counts as friends. According to Rolling Stone the singer, who cannot sell all his shares at once, has pledged to use much of the money raised from his investments to aid charity work in Africa. 1.3 million Bono has always made charity a big priority and one of his biggest pushes in recent years is the One Campaign and associated clothing and accessories lines (RED) and EDUN, which help stimulate trade with poverty stricken countries. With the Facebook cash, you could buy more than 13 million of the (RED) edition $1,109 Bugaboo Donkey Twin strollers . But if one person were to obtain that windfall, what could $1.5 billion buy you? We broke it down, by-the-numbers: Bono addressed the rumors of his (alleged) impending money bomb while speaking to MSNBC’s Andrea Mitchell on Friday morning. “Contrary to reports, I’m not a billionaire or going to be richer than any Beatle — and not just in the sense of money, by the way; the Beatles are untouchable — those billionaire reports are a joke,” he said. “In Elevation, we invest other people’s money — endowments, pension funds. We do get paid, of course. But, you know, I felt rich when I was 20 years old and my wife was paying my bills. Just being in a band, I’ve always felt blessed. I got interested in technology because I’m an artist, I’m interested in the forces that shape the world, politics, religion, the stuff we’ve been talking about today. Technology is huge, I wanted to learn about it. People might say that’s odd, but I think it’s odd if artists aren’t interested in the world around them. I’m always chasing that. Facebook are an amazing team, a brilliant team. It’s a technology that brings people together.” 6.9 million Famous for his signature Bulgari shades, if Bono were to get his hands on the full stash, he could hit the Amazon.com marketplace and get nearly seven million pair for cheap at $215.77 a piece. 12.5 The giant claw stage that U2 schlepped around the world for their record-setting 360 Tour was insanely expensive. With each of the three structures they built coming in at $40 million a piece, Bono could build nine more with the Facebook loot. 300,000 Speaking U2 tours, on their famous 1992 Zoo TV outing, one of the highlights were the blinged-out Trabant cars that were hung from the lighting rigs. The famously low-budget East German cars were never expensive, but if Bono were ever thinking of expanding his car collection, he could snatch up more than 300,000 1989 models for the money. 39.4 million : In the recent documentary, “From the Sky Down,” U2 basically admitted that they’d gotten a bit full of themselves by the time their 1988 ode to Americana, Rattle and Hum , was released. If Bono is feeling especially embarrassed about all the cowboy hats and blues discovery of that era, he could try to wipe out some trace of it by buying nearly 40 million Blu-Ray copies of the DVD from Amazon . Rihanna Calls Acting ‘A Challenge’ — But ‘I Like That’

‘Acting was a whole different world,’ the singer-turned-actress tells MTV News, comparing ‘Battleship’ to her music videos. By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Rihanna in “Battleship” Photo: Universal Pictures Given Rihanna ‘s illustrious and commanding presence in all her music videos , it seems as though the Caribbean-born superstar’s experience performing in various clips would be the perfect training ground for her eventual transition into full-fledged acting. When MTV News sat down with Rihanna recently to discuss her acting debut in “Battleship,” we asked if her work in music videos helped prepare her for her role in the film. “Training ground? Maybe not, it wasn’t exactly that,” Rihanna said. “For me, acting was a whole different world. We make mini-movies with music videos, but there’s always a song track that’s playing, you don’t have to speak, so [with acting] you have to tell that emotion with the tone of your voice, and I have an accent, so I had to change it to a bit of an American accent for this movie, so that was different,” she explained. So might we see more of Rihanna’s acting skills in future films? We asked the “Where Have U Been” singer if having her first film under her belt has given her the confidence to go out and conquer more movie roles. “It will always be brand-new, because it’s a whole different project every time, it’s a whole new person,” she said. “There’s nothing you can have under your belt with acting, not in my opinion, because I’m not a natural. This isn’t my first [career choice], so I don’t know. I think it’s always going to be a challenge for me, but I like that.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Battleship.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Drake Showers Love On Houston With Club Paradise Tour

‘This is my favorite place in the mother—-in’ world!’ Drizzy declares. By Maurice Bobb Drake Photo: MTV News HOUSTON — Drake’s ties to Houston run deep. It was the city made famous by Rap-a-Lot Records, the Geto Boys, UGK, DJ Screw and a litany of chopped-and-screwed odes to purple syrup that sired, cultivated and ultimately catapulted the Toronto native into the stratosphere of chart-topping, award-winning artists, so it was only fitting that the MC born Aubrey Graham would pour more of his heart and soul into Thursday night’s Toyota Center performance, an earmarked leg on his mammoth Club Paradise Tour. Before Drizzy took the stage for his nearly two-hour set, he was preceded by a coterie of hip-hop radio fixtures: French Montana, 2 Chainz, Meek Mill, Waka Flocka Flame and J. Cole. Each artist was allotted an average of 30 minutes to run through their budding catalog of hits as the crowd — an amalgamation of ages, races and backgrounds — filed into the expansive arena to see the YMCMB MC. Dressed in a simple black T-shirt and jeans — sans garish bejeweled pendant, necklace or watch — and backed by a five-piece band, the Canadian spitter took the stage just before 10 p.m., bursting with nostalgia and reverence for H-Town. “I love Toronto, but this (Houston) is my favorite place in the mother—-in’ world!” he declared. Drake jumpstarted the throng with last year’s undisputed summer anthem, “I’m on One,” before igniting the crowd with the Weeknd-assisted “Crew Love” from his critically and commercially successful sophomore opus, Take Care . In between sips of mystery drank from a grande-sized Styrofoam cup, Drake bounced across the stage like a whirling dervish, looking as if he were unchained from the restrictions and restraints of the criticism he’s faced since solidifying his brand of moody, self-reflective braggadocio in the hardened, self-policing pantheon of hip-hop. Songs like “She Will” and “Up All Night” flowed from the multiplatinum MC’s happy place like an unrelenting wave crashing on a sandy beach. Drake was having so much fun onstage he felt compelled to share it with his co-stars. “Every n—a you wanna hear is right f—ing here!” Drake said before bringing out 2 Chainz for the newly released banger “No Lie.” The record has yet to gain the kind of traction it deserves, but one thing is clear: You haven’t heard “No Lie” until you’ve heard it in a live arena setting. Next up was Waka Flocka, whose high-energy flow on “Round of Applause” was punctuated by pyrotechnics on the “Baby make that ass clap” refrain. Drizzy briefly put his parade of guest stars on hold to offer up his current crossover hit “Take Care” before Meek Mill stepped into the cypher for “House Party” and “I’m a Boss.” The biggest surprise — literally and figuratively — of the night emerged from stage right to thunderous applause: Rick Ross. The Teflon Don and French Montana joined Drake and Meek Mill for the first-ever all-hands-on-deck live performance of “Stay Schemin” from Rozay’s groundbreaking mixtape Rich Forever . Drake’s growth as a live performer was evident as he took time to single out fans for various compliments, comments and jokes, making 15,000 fans feel as though they were in a small, intimate venue meant for 1,500. Drizzy crooned and pandered to the shrieking females in the audience as a prelude to “Make Me Proud,” but the exuberant pirouettes and middle-fingered Mazel tovs were back with “HYFR” and “The Motto.” The only blemish on the evening came when a young fan managed to hop onstage ala Lil Mama before being promptly removed by herculean security guards. “Shout out to that f— ass n—a that ran onstage,” Drake said. “He probably getting his ass beat right now.” To close out his set, Drizzy thanked the fans for their unyielding support and offered up the defiantly brazen “Headlines,” lest there were any haters left in the building — or in the industry, for that matter — “overdosed on confidence” enough to think they can keep Drake from being Drizzy. Because, as he so eloquently put it on this night, Drake doesn’t care about what the naysayers have to say: He only cares about making music for his fans. Have you seen the Club Paradise Tour? Ian Somerhalder Says ‘Fifty Shades Of Grey’ Role Would Be ‘Amazing’

‘I officially have a lot of experience seducing younger women,’ ‘Vampire Diaries’ star tells MTV News. By Christina Garibaldi Ian Somerhalder Photo: WireImage Now that “The Vampire Diaries” has wrapped its third season, Ian Somerhalder will now have some time to fill, and if fans of “Fifty Shades of Grey” have their way, he’ll step into the role of Christian Grey . For weeks, fans have been voicing their opinions on who should play the billionaire tycoon in the film adaptation of the hit erotic trilogy penned by E L James. Robert Pattinson ‘s name has been in the mix, as well as Ryan Gosling, but it seems that most vans are gravitating toward the “Vampire Diaries” star to take on this dark and dynamic character. MTV News caught up with Somerhalder at the CW Upfronts in New York City on Thursday (May 17) and he revealed that playing the role of Damon in the “Vampire Diaries” has been perfect training to get him ready to portray Christian Grey. “I think it would be an amazing thing,” Somerhalder said of the possibility of getting the role. “One interesting thing is, by the virtue of playing Damon for now a few years, [he’s] 170 plus years old, in love with an 18 year old, I officially have a lot of experience seducing younger women. I’m not saying, I’m just saying.” “Fifty Shades of Grey” revolves around Christian Grey’s relationship with young college graduate Anastasia Steele as the two develop not only a strong emotional relationship, but a much-talked-about sexual relationship. The scenes are so hot that at times it has left readers, and even Somerhalder a little flushed. “A little bit, yeah, there’s blushing,” Somerhalder said of some of the S&M scenes. We are sure fans would agree that Somerhalder could easily pull it off, but his support isn’t just coming from the “Fifty Shades” fans , it is also coming from his “Vampire Diaries” co-stars. “I know he’s campaigning, I love it,” Candice Accola said of Somerhalder expressing his interest for the role. “I mean, the whole thing is like Adonis, sexy and he fits that bill pretty well.” Kat Graham agrees , “Ian’s an amazing actor, he’s extremely dedicated to his craft and he’s also very good to the fans,” Graham told MTV News at the annual Wango Tango concert. “They’d be lucky to have him.” Do you think Ian Somerhalder would make the perfect Christian Grey? Let us know in the comments.
