Francis And The Lights Call Drake Co-Sign ‘Overwhelming’

‘I accept the challenge that it brings,’ frontman Francis Farewell Starlite says of tourmate Drizzy’s support. By Jayson Rodriguez Francis and the Lights Photo: MTV News Francis and the Lights opened up for Drake more than 30 times during the Toronto rapper’s Away From Home Tour , but in the lead-up to what should be a somewhat smaller show at S.O.B.’s on Thursday (August 12), the band says expectations have made it seem like anything but a regular gig. “I really feel like it’s my debut show in New York, even though it really isn’t,” frontman Francis Farewell Starlite told MTV News. “I feel like some aspect to it … I’d be lying if it didn’t have something to do with the idea of who is gonna be there — press- and music business-wise. But I also can’t have any expectations of that. But that would be exciting, if it was blown up in that way.” The show is in support of their newest effort, It’ll Be Better, the band’s third, and most ambitious, project to date. After two EPs, Francis, a veteran of the New York City performance circuit, set about working on Better, a collection of stripped-down tracks and searing vocals. In addition to Drake, Ryan Leslie is another champion of the singer. And Kanye West posted the singer’s cover of “Can’t Tell Me Nothing” on his last year. Francis called the support, particularly from Drake, “overwhelming.” But, he added, he’s completely prepared for all of the attention that often comes with such a heavy co-sign. “It’s humbling in that way,” he explained of Drake, who he collaborated with on Thank Me Later ‘s “Karaoke.” “It’s someone whose work you admire and it means something to you. In that way, it’s almost overwhelming. I think that’s the word for the amount that he has brought me to the forefront. It’s overwhelming. But at the same time, I’m ready for it. And it feels right to me. And I accept the challenge that it brings.” What do you think of Francis and the Lights’ latest album? Share your reviews in the comments! Linkin Park Say New Single ‘The Catalyst’ Is ‘A Risk, But Worth It’

‘We wanted a track that represented where the album was going to be and how it was going to work,’ says bassist Phoenix Farrell. By James Montgomery Linkin Park Photo: James Minchin Last week, gamers everywhere thrilled to the new trailer for the upcoming “Medal of Honor,” which was directed by Linkin Park ‘s Joseph Hahn and features the band’s brand-new single, “The Catalyst.” And while the trailer no doubt had “MOH” fanatics going crazy, it may have left LP fans feeling a bit confused. Because “The Catalyst” is undoubtedly unlike any song the band has ever released. A moody, synth-heavy, decidedly doomy rumination on the broken times in which we live, it seems to back up the group’s claims that their new album, A Thousand Suns, will be a drastic departure from anything they’ve done in the past. And that, according to LP bassist Dave “Phoenix” Farrell, was precisely the point. “We wanted a track that represented where the album was going to be and how it was going to work, and this was really the track to do that. … It’s a risk, but [it’s] worth it,” he told MTV News earlier this week. “We’ve known [the album is] going to be different, and if fans were expecting Hybrid Theory or Meteora, they’re going to be surprised. It’s going to take people some time to figure it out and know what to do with it.” Farrell wouldn’t go into greater detail about just how the new album, due September 14, will differ from Linkin Park’s previous efforts, but any fan with a pair of ears should be able to tell based on “The Catalyst” alone. The songs are bigger, deeper, decidedly weirder. And while Farrell didn’t exactly back up frontman Chester Bennington’s earlier claims that A Thousand Suns is a full-blown “concept” album, he didn’t really deny them either. “I’ve never liked the title ‘concept record,’ to me that holds up the idea of Tommy or The Wall. And I love those records, but this is not that,” he said. “There are a couple threads that run throughout it, but, for us, the only concept is that it’s not intended to be a collection of individual songs. It’s constructed in a way and thought of in terms of ‘How will it flow?’ I would love … in this day and age, for our fans just once to sit down and listen to it from front to back. We want it to work as an experience.” And to that end, Farrell said the band always wanted to tie “The Catalyst” into a video game of some sort. The way they see it, it only adds another layer to the experience. So when the “Medal of Honor” folks approached them, they leapt at the opportunity. Though, sadly, working with Electronic Arts — the publisher and developer of the “MOH” series — hasn’t improved their gaming skills any. But you can’t really blame LP for that. After all, they’ve been working on A Thousand Suns for a long time now. “I loved the old ‘Medal of Honor’ games, but since we’ve been working on the new album — and really, since I had kids — I’ve kind of hung it up for a while,” Farrell laughed. “It sucks because now I have a younger brother who’s 15 and when we play against each other, it’s not even competitive. It’s ridiculous. And it pisses me off. He’s laughing and sh–. He’s killing me with his knife.” Related Artists Linkin Park

Kanye West’s Greatest Awards-Show Performances — Until 2010 VMAs

From his epic ‘Jesus Walks’ at the Grammys to his powerful return at the BET Awards, ‘Ye knows how to work the stage. By James Montgomery Kanye West performs at the 2008 VMAs Photo: Kevin Mazur/WireImage On Thursday (August 12), Kanye West took to his Twitter account to proclaim: “Just met with MTV and it’s about to go down! VMAs!!!” What he meant, of course, is that he’d just been confirmed as a performer at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards . On Sunday, September 12 — live from Los Angeles at 9 p.m. ET — things are gonna get really interesting, because while Kanye is perhaps best known for his awards-show tirades , tantrums and troublemaking , he has a lengthy list of downright amazing performances over the years too. So, in anticipation of Yeezy’s triumphant return to the VMA stage, we’ve compiled a list of his greatest awards-show performances yet: “Love Lockdown,” 2008 MTV VMAs One year after vowing he’d “never return” to MTV, Kanye thankfully went back on his word , closing out the 2008 VMAs with a stirring premiere of “Love Lockdown,” the first single from his 808s & Heartbreak album. Decked out in a gray suit (complete with beating, LED heart), backed only by a line of riot-gear-clad Japanese drummers, this was an introduction to West’s stripped-down, vulnerable 808s era. Of course, given that he performed the tune in front of an acre-sized wide screen, “stripped down” is a relative term. It’s Kanye we’re talking about, after all. “Power,” 2010 BET Awards West returned from his self-imposed exile (after the Taylor Swift incident at the ’09 VMAs) with this performance, a fiery, fierce debut of his brand-new single “Power.” Standing atop a volcano, impossibly huge Horus chain draped over his neck, the message was clear: Not only was he back, but West was stronger than ever. And also, apparently, fire-retardant. “Swagga Like Us,” 2009 Grammys Joined by fellow hip-hop heavyweights T.I., Jay-Z, Lil Wayne and (a very pregnant) M.I.A., Kanye wowed the Grammy audience with an appropriately swaggering take on the epic posse cut. The performance recalled the glory of the Rat Pack years — tuxedos, bandstands, etc. — and, judging on his verse alone, West was most definitely the Sinatra of the evening. “Jesus Walks,” 2005 Grammys Arguably Kanye’s biggest performance of all time. Joined by Mavis Staples, John Legend and the Blind Boys of Alabama, he took the audience to Sunday service, danced around like Diddy, died in the arms of a silhouetted woman, attended his own funeral, then ascended to heaven, in a white suit and angel wings. Seriously, all of that happened. Oh, and moments later, his College Dropout wins Best Rap Album, at which point West gives an ultra-cocky speech that culminated in him proclaiming, “A lot of people were wondering what I was going to do if I didn’t win anything tonight … I guess we’ll never know.” “Stronger” and “Hey Mama,” 2008 Grammys The polar opposite of “Jesus Walks,” this performance starts off with a typically Kanye-ian take on hit single “Stronger” (smoking lunar landscape, glow-in-the-dark suit, Daft Punk cameo) but then makes an abrupt about-face, as West ditched all the flash and did an updated version of his song “Hey Mama,” changing lyrics to reflect the recent death of his mother, Donda . Crouching beneath a single spotlight, he nearly breaks down at several points, and when he’s done, the Grammy audience gives him a much-deserved standing ovation. It’s his most straightforward performance to date. And yet, it’s also his most powerful. What is your favorite Kanye awards-show performance? Are you looking forward to what he’ll do at this year’s VMAs? Let us know in the comments! The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on September 12 at 9 p.m. ET. Fans can go to VMA.MTV.com (or text VMA to 97979 if they are Verizon subscribers) to vote for the winners from now through September 12. Related Videos Gearing Up For The 2010 VMAs! Foxy Brown Testifies Before Grand Jury

‘It feels so good to tell the truth,’ Brooklyn MC says after giving testimony related to her July arrest. By Jayson Rodriguez Foxy Brown Photo: Kevin Mazur/ WireImage Foxy Brown testified before a grand jury on Wednesday about charges stemming from her arrest last month in Brooklyn over an argument with a neighbor. Foxy has a history of feuding with the neighbor, Arlene Raymond, dating back to 2007. According to the New York Daily News, Foxy was interviewed for three hours about the incident. In July, the Brooklyn femcee was arrested after a dispute with Raymond. The rapper reportedly had to be restrained from the woman; a police report also suggested Foxy flashed the neighbor with her backside. No decision was made after Wednesday’s testimony, but Brown could be slapped with a felony charge for violating a restraining order Raymond obtained after her initial spat with Foxy three years ago. Foxy spoke to MTV News after her first court appearance late last month and firmly denied the allegations. “I was on my way to rehearsal with my band and I was leaving my mom’s house in Park Slope, [Brooklyn], where I always go; that’s the home that I was born in,” she said. “And the police came and they saw the situation and there wasn’t any conflict or discord — they were really baffled. But a supervisor came and saw the [potential for] publicity. If my name was Keisha Brown and not Foxy Brown, I would have been let go.” After she exited the Brooklyn court house Wednesday, Foxy told members of the media gathered outside that she hopes the actual account of the incident will be heard. “It feels so good to tell the truth,” she said. “This thing has been such a nightmare.” Do you think Foxy can finally put her legal troubles behind her? Fantasia Released From Hospital

Singer is discharged two days after apparent suicide attempt. By Mawuse Ziegbe Fantasia Photo: Bennett Raglin/WireImage Fantasia Barrino was released from the hospital on Wednesday (August 11) after apparently trying to commit suicide by overdosing on medication . The “American Idol” season-three victor was rushed to the hospital Monday after she was found in a North Carolina home. Barrino’s manager, Brian Dickens, confirmed to MTV News that she was released from Carolinas Medical Center-Mercy in North Carolina after being admitted to the hospital under an alias. “She has been lifted up by the outpouring of love and support from her fans,” Dickens said in a statement to MTV News. “She is more committed than ever to her daughter and her work because they are her heart, her soul and inspiration.” The “Idol” champ shocked fans when she reportedly attempted to take her own life by ingesting a combination of aspirin and a sleep aid . Many Barrino fans have expressed their support during the past few days; however, some have blasted the singer for her alleged relationship with a married man and for almost leaving her young daughter without a mother. Although Barrino has been the subject of public criticism and is obviously experiencing setbacks in her personal life, public-relations expert Howard Bragman believes the Free Yourself singer will be able to bounce back. “I think the number-one thing Fantasia has to do is heal. I think she has to get some psychological help, find out what brought her to this moment, and make sure it doesn’t happen again … that is number one,” Bragman told MTV News. “And once that’s under control, then you start to look at your projects on the horizon. You don’t give yourself this timetable. But assuming she’s well enough in a matter of weeks or months to promote her album or her projects, well, the reality is, we live in a very forgiving society.” Share your well-wishes with Fantasia and her family in the comments. Soulja Boy Tell’em Set To Star In Nick Cannon-Penned Flick

Rapper reveals production will start in November, dreams of future biopic. By Jayson Rodriguez Soulja Boy Tell’em Photo: MTV News Are the “Teen of the South” and the “chairman” of TeenNick joining forces? Young Soulja Boy Tell’em said he’s set to begin shooting a film written by TV star Nick Cannon this fall. “Me and Nick Cannon have been talking back and forth for, like, the last year about a movie idea,” SB told MTV News. “I did a movie with him earlier this year with Justin Bieber [‘School Gyrls’], and it went straight to Nickelodeon. It was a good movie, but it was mostly for kids. We were talking back and forth, and he wants me to star in a movie that he wrote when he was, like, 17.” According to the “Pretty Boy Swag” rapper, production will begin in November. He was hush on additional details, but the 20-year-old star said he hopes his first foray into Hollywood isn’t a one-stop trip: He eventually wants to shoot a biopic. “I want people to know my story,” he said. “Because a lot of people know Soulja Boy and know my songs, but a lot of people don’t know where I’m from or where I came from, how I did it. “A lot of people do know,” he continued, “but a movie would paint the picture so much better. I wanna do a movie that’s my story, my legacy; what got me here and why I’m still here.” In the meantime, SB is putting the finishing touches on his next album, The DeAndre Way, which is slated for a fall release. His next single, “Speakers Going Hammer,” was produced by Drake collaborator Boi-1da. “Basically, it’s all about the sound of the music,” SB told MTV News about the track. “I got bars on this one. First verse, second verse, all bars — another anthem, as far as the hook. The hook is catchy. The video is gonna match the song perfect. And it’s another hit.” Do you want to see Soulja Boy on the big screen? Let us know in the comments! Related Artists Nick Cannon Soulja Boy Tell’em
