Jack White Says He Recorded ‘Incredible’ Song With Jay-Z

‘I played him something I’ve been kicking around for a while and he immediately came out with words for it,’ White tells British GQ. By Kyle Anderson Jay-Z Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images Jack White is a busy man. At the moment, he’s involved in at least one full-time outfit (the Dead Weather) while two other groups wait in the wings (the Raconteurs and the long-dormant White Stripes). Though each of his musical projects is unique, they all feature White’s swamp-monster guitar sounds and his signature voice. According to a recent interview in the British version of GQ magazine, he may now be expanding his palette to include hip-hop. “I just did a record with Jay-Z,” White told the magazine . “We did a song together a few weeks ago. It was incredible.” White didn’t tell the magazine when the song might be released or on whose album it could appear, but he was blown away by Jigga’s legendary knack for improvisation. “I played him something that I’ve been kicking around for a while and he immediately came out with words for it,” White said. “It’s unbelievable-sounding.” This would mark White’s first proper foray into hip-hop, though he has already teamed up with a mutual friend of his and Jay’s. In 2008, he recorded “Another Way to Die” — the official theme song of the 2008 James Bond film “Quantum of Solace” — with Alicia Keys, churning out a ruggedly sexy track that split the difference between White’s visceral garage and Keys’ funky R&B. White can currently be seen in the new White Stripes concert documentary “Under Great White Northern Lights,” while Jay is busy helping get a basketball arena built in Brooklyn. DMX Sentenced To Six Months For Probation Violation

Rapper tested positive for cocaine use. By Gil Kaufman DMX (file) Photo: Jason Kempin/FilmMagic DMX was sentenced to six months in an Arizona jail on Tuesday for violating his probation by using drugs. The rapper (born Earl Simmons), who has been in jail since his arrest on March 9 for five counts of probation violation, admitted to a single violation for failing a court-mandated drug test last June and testing positive for cocaine, according to The Arizona Republic. Though she could have sent him to prison for the infringement, Maricopa County Superior Court Commissioner Christine Mulleneaux reinstated X’s probation over the objections of the prosecutor. In addition to ordering him to spend six months in jail, Mulleneaux said the troubled rapper must undergo a mental health evaluation to search for possible underlying psychological issues that might be driving his need to self-medicate. She said he could be released earlier if he is accepted into a court-approved drug rehabilitation program. As a result, X seemed destined to be the next star to land on the VH1 reality show “Celebrity Rehab,” as he’s already been accepted by the Pasadena Recovery Center, which is the setting for the show hosted by addiction specialist Dr. Drew Pinsky. But show staffer Will Smith told the paper that the “Party Up” rapper would not join the cast of “Rehab” because he is destined for a lockdown facility. “He’s looking at nine months to a year of treatment,” Smith said. Where Simmons, 39, ends up depends on whether California allows him to serve out his intensive probation in the state, a sentence that will keep him under virtual house arrest until December. If not, X may have to undergo the Maricopa County Sheriff’s substance-abuse treatment program at the jail where he is currently incarcerated. The rapper’s attorney, Glenn Allen, told the court that his client was “desperately trying to get hold of his demons” and beat the long-running drug addiction problems that have plagued him for several years and derailed a once-promising acting and music career, which included a record as the only artist in SoundScan history to have his first four albums debut at #1. In court, Mulleneaux told X that she believed he was sincere but needs treatment. Since 1999, X has been arrested more than half a dozen times for drug and weapon possession, false identity charges, theft and animal cruelty charges. Related Artists DMX

‘We really love the song, so we decided to cut it,’ he tells MTV News of the My World 2.0 track. By Jocelyn Vena Justin Bieber Photo: MTV News On Tuesday (March 16), Justin Bieber released his latest single, “U Smile,” from March 23’s My World 2.0. Bieber told MTV News that the single felt like it had just the right vibe to include on his sophomore album, a follow-up to 2009 debut, My World. Bieber helped co-write the song along with Jerry Duplessis, Arden Altino and Dan Rigo, but he had particularly high praise for someone else he worked with on the track. “I worked with August. I got him. He’s a really good writer,” Bieber said of his friend and collaborator. “The song is amazing. We really love the song, so we decided to cut it. It’s really amazing.” On the sugary-sweet, Motown-inspired track, Bieber sings, “If you need me/ I’ll come right there/ From a thousand miles away/ When you smile, I smile.” Bieber’s video for “Baby” had him bowling alongside Drake and Ludacris . So what plans does he have in store for the “U Smile” clip? Well, first he has to decide to shoot a video for it. “We haven’t shot it yet,” he said, adding that he’s not the guy to ask about any concepts that may be floating around. “I don’t know. I don’t do the visual projects. I’m just a singer.” On Tuesday afternoon, Bieber tweeted about the song’s quickly growing popularity. “Wrote this song for u guys, and now u are all helping it climb the TOP TEN of ITUNES … U SMILE is #10 already! thank u so much. Lets go #1!” he wrote. “Was extremely grateful when yesterday someone told me ‘U SMILE’ sounded like an old Motown classic … very cool.” What do you think of Justin’s new song? Nicki Minaj Shoots ‘Massive Attack’ Video With Drake And Amber Rose

Hype Williams-directed clip is ‘for all the girls that like to play dress-up,’ the Young Money diva says. By Shaheem Reid, with reporting by Matt Elias Nikki Minaj on the set of her video for “Massive Attack” Photo: MTV News The hair is big and blond, the car is sleek and pink, and the money is green and in abundance. Nicki Minaj shot her first official solo video Monday in Lancaster, California. While the video set was deep in the desert, it was far from barren. Nicki brought her ladies (extras dressed in pink wigs and showing lots of cleavage), her sexy home girl and some of her musical family. “The song is called ‘Massive Attack,’ ” she explained. “I’m excited for people to hear me … doing more than one verse. It’s really creative. Shout-out to [songwriter] Sean Garrett. I’ve always loved his style. He really kinda had a great idea of what I wanted to do. I wanted to be theatrical, but I am very serous about what I do. He was able to mesh that together and have a really fun but direct record, if that makes sense. … This video, it’s just, like, monsta. The video is a monsta.” Drake, the Birdman. Garrett and Amber Rose all made the trek for the clip, directed by Hype Williams. Earlier in the afternoon, a helicopter swooped down as Minaj and Rose put pedal to the metal in a pink Lambo. “I brought my BFF Amber Rose out here,” Nicki said while sitting in her ride. “This is a massive attack. We shot the helicopter scene. Obviously, I had to have a hot-pink Lamborghini. We’re having fun in the car, and we see a freakin’ helicopter chase us. So we get on the walkie-talkie, like, ‘Mayday! Mayday!’ It’s really fashion and beauty shots, and we’re acting like we’re doing something important. “I kinda always like to do things in an unexpected fashion,” she added. “I didn’t want to shoot the typical new-artist vision. Thank God I have a wonderful label that stands behind me and my vision. I met Hype in a freakin’ airport. I didn’t recognize him without his dreads. We exchanged information, and it happened to be a week before I wanted to shoot a video. I told him the idea. Of course, I had to let Baby and Slim know and hope they would understand my expensive taste. It all came together. Sean Garrett is on the hook.” Nicki also filmed scenes where she jumps in the mud and crawls through the forest. “It’s just beautiful — the clothes, everything. The ambiance,” she said. “It’s for all the girls that like to play dress-up. They’re gonna love this one.” Minaj’s next video will be a feature: She and Usher are shooting “Lil’ Freak.” Meanwhile, the Young Money diva will also be working on her debut LP . Like her song, it will also be massive. “You can expect it to be almost like the soundtrack to a movie,” she explained. “It’s gonna take you somewhere that … it’s kinda gonna tell a story. I didn’t just want to make an album that had a club record, just the obvious. I wanted to paint a very graphic picture. And every record that I’m doing for the album, I can see the stage show, I can see the video. It’s just gonna be big. You can expect it to be big.” Are you excited to see Nicki’s “Massive Attack” video? Let us know! Related Artists Nicki Minaj

Guns N’ Roses Face Tour Trouble In South America

A riot erupts during an alleged scheduled private show, and another concert is canceled after a stage collapses. By James Montgomery The damaged stage where Guns N’ Roses were going to perform in Brazil on Monday Photo: Agencia Estado/AP Images Axl Rose has always had the ability to seemingly summon chaos at will — witness his apparent run-in with paparazzi at LAX late last year, any number of riots his actions (or lack thereof) touched off at Guns N’ Roses shows, or, really, anything on this list — but on GN’R’s current South American tour, things are really getting out of hand. Because now, Rose and crew are wrecking havoc even when they don’t have shows. Case in point: a reported riot at a private concert in S

‘God of War 3’ Ending Could Have Been Much Darker

Director Stig Asmussen explains why he made the trilogy conclude on a more hopeful note. By Russ Frushtick God Of War 3 Photo: Sony With the release of “God of War 3” on Tuesday (March 16), players finally get to experience the culmination of Kratos’ quest for revenge. What they may not know is that the ending they’ll be playing was very different two years ago, when the game had a different director behind it. MTV News spoke with Stig Asmussen , who ultimately took the reins as game director, about where the story might have gone had original helmer Cory Barlog remained on the team. Asmussen says that Barlog, who left Sony to work with writer-director George Miller, “had a certain kind of idea and design for the plot and story” that had a “fantastic layout.” But once in control of the fate of “God of War 3,” Asmussen felt it was important to make the project his own, and the story was a big part of that. “There were some things about the plot that I didn’t think were fully fleshed out, and I thought that it was really important that I was able to inject a story into the game that I was really passionate about and really understood,” he said. “So, we changed the story quite a bit. I worked with Marianne [Krawczyk], a writer on ‘God of War 1’ and ‘2’ and some other key people on the team who helped write the story.” Under Asmussen’s direction, the ending of “God of War 3” became much brighter, with a message of hope in the wake of carnage. That contrasts dramatically with what Barlog had been planning. “[Barlog’s] idea was that it ends with death,” explained Asmussen. “Death was the theme. I wanted something that was a little bit more hopeful than that.” Despite the brighter message in the end, “God of War 3” remains a remarkably dark, violent experience throughout most if its 10-hour length. There should be no concern about Kratos, the series’ twisted anti-hero, going soft, especially after players see his first visceral decapitation. But it does make one wonder what the future holds for the franchise and whether the dark days are over. We wouldn’t bet on it. For more on “God of War 3,” visit Multiplayer.MTV.com .
