30 Seconds To Mars Talk Upcoming North American Tour

Next leg of Into the Wild Tour begins in Las Vegas on April 9. By Kyle Anderson Jared Leto and Tomislav Milicevic of 30 Seconds to Mars Photo: MTV News 30 Seconds to Mars have been a band for over 10 years, but they’re just coming into their own as an elite touring force now. On February 19, they’ll head to the U.K. to begin the first leg of their Into the Wild Tour, which will have them touring all over Europe. But American fans need not worry, as lead singer Jared Leto told MTV News that they’ll be back in North America on April 9 for a show in Las Vegas. “From Elvis to Cirque du Soleil to 30 Seconds to Mars — you’ve got your pick,” Leto says dryly of the band’s visit to the Entertainment Capital of the World. Despite their decade-long existence, the thrill of touring hasn’t waned for Leto and his cohorts. “We did a lot of shows to 20 people in a bar who were more interested in cheap drinks than they were the band,” Leto says. “We’re really excited and we’re grateful for it, and we don’t take it for granted at all.” “I remember just a few years ago there was a show where we sold 800 tickets and we couldn’t believe it,” Leto adds. “The very first show on this tour is 8,000 people, and the next day there’s gonna be 11,000 people there. I’m going to have to get my voice in shape!” “We’re about to go on our first arena tour — we’re crazy excited,” says guitarist Tomislav Milicevic. The inspiration for the name of the tour comes from a lyric from “The Mission,” a song that Leto wrote back in 1999 that appeared on the group’s self-titled debut. “When you go out on the road, it is kind of a venture into the wild. You’re with this group of pirates, from your crew to your bandmates, and you share this insane journey around the world. It’s quite unlike anything else.” “Plus, acceptable levels of hygiene go down when you’re on tour,” Milicevic quipped. Related Artists 30 Seconds To Mars

John Mayer’s Playboy Interview Begs: Is There Such A Thing As TMI?

Mayer unquestionably went too far, but is it better to have an outspoken celebrity than an edgeless one? By Kyle Anderson John Mayer Photo: Jason Merritt/ Getty Images In this era of super-social connectivity and 24-hour celebrity news, the filter between stars and the audience has shrunk to nothing. By John Mayer’s own admission , he went too far — way too far — with his use of the N-word in his recent, much-maligned Playboy interview , and his use of the word was indefensible. However, part of Mayer’s appeal is that he says outlandish things during interviews, on his Twitter and in his sporadic appearances on the stages of stand-up comedy clubs. The size of his Twitter following audience alone (Mayer has over 3 million people tracking him, which ranks him up there with stars like Ashton Kutcher and Britney Spears) suggests that his verbal unpredictability excites fans and leaves them hanging on his every tweet. Since an initial round of apologetic tweets about the interview , Mayer’s Twitter account had been silent at press time. In the meantime, he has sparked yet another conversation that features fair points on both sides. Is it better to have an honest rock star than an edgeless, overly-managed automaton? “I’d say it’s better to have a rock star who isn’t afraid to open his mouth, but it’s a social contract,” said Caryn Ganz of Rolling Stone, a magazine that has tracked Mayer’s growth from minor singer-songwriter to celebrity guitar hero. “We know he’s going to say some uncomfortable stuff, and he knows he’s going to have to pay the price sometimes. He made a mistake with the racial comments, but in general, I appreciate his unmediated honesty.” Spin Deputy Editor Steve Kandell concurs, but with a caveat. “I mean, of course it’s more entertaining to watch someone put his foot in his mouth,” he said. “Or, better yet, put his foot in his mouth, then set his foot on fire and hop around while shooting himself in his other foot.” Kandell said that having no filter certainly makes stars more interesting, but he worries about fatigue. “It’s human to be that much of an idiot, and right now, it’s still entertaining. But by, I don’t know, Monday? To me, all this is a bigger problem for what we do than the music industry’s woes or the death of print. There’s no one you want to read about.” But the big question is: Does wanting to read about an artist translate into interest in engaging in that artist’s work? “I think being open and unfiltered generally helps the music and is good for album sales — up until you say something racist,” says Lane Brown, editor of New York magazine’s pop culture blog Vulture . Referencing Kanye West’s interruption of Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech during last year’s MTV Video Music Awards, he added, “That will be more difficult to come back from than interrupting an acceptance speech at an awards show.” Even if such notoriety doesn’t translate directly into sales for somebody like Mayer, interest in him remains. “I don’t know a soul who’s ever listened to a John Mayer album, but I’ll read about him,” Kandell admitted. Ganz concurred. “I don’t listen to his music, but I respect him for having an opinion,” she said. “He hasn’t converted me, but he has almost certainly convinced people to buy his albums based on his ability to speak his mind.” For his part, Mayer has said he wants to pull back from the “soundbite game,” limit his media appearances and cut down on Twitter. The coming weeks and months will reveal how he’ll adjust. Tell us what you think: Will you still be interested in John Mayer in the wake of this controversy? Do you prefer your pop stars open and honest, or are they better off leading more guarded lives? Related Artists John Mayer

Olympic Skeleton Racer Noelle Pikus-Pace Powered By Taylor Swift, Pampers

‘I really like country music … if I’m too hyped up, I like to chill out,’ says the U.S. Olympic athlete. By James Montgomery Noelle Pikus-Pace Photo: MTV News VANCOUVER — As we’ve mentioned, most members of the U.S. Skeleton team are pretty nuts, unafraid not only to stare death in the face but rocket towards it at 90 miles an hour. Face first. With no brakes. And while one-half of the U.S. women’s team here at the Winter Olympics outwardly embraces the sport’s daredevil mystique (that would be 25-year-old firebrand Katie Uhlaender), her partner does not. Lil Wayne Put His ‘Stamp’ On ‘We Are The World,’ Director Paul Haggis Says

‘You don’t expect Lil Wayne to be singing like this,’ he says of Weezy tackling Bob Dylan’s verse from the original. By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Eric Ditzian Lil Wayne at the “We Are The World 25 For Haiti” recording session in Hollywood on February 1 Photo: Kevin Mazur/ WireImage Lil Wayne might be a multiplatinum hip-hop superstar, but the MC had some big shoes to fill when he was chosen to take on Bob Dylan ‘s verse for the “We Are the World” remake . Their styles might be different, but Paul Haggis, the charity single’s video director , said the Cash Money rapper held his own. “They each put their own distinctive stamp on it,” Haggis, who wrote and directed the Oscar-winning film “Crash,” told MTV News. “So say he did the Bob Dylan part — well, those are lines Bob Dylan did, and no one can ever sing them like him again. But when Lil Wayne sings them, you’ll never imagine someone else singing them [either].” Lil Wayne was initially perplexed to be given Dylan’s verse. “I was like, ‘You guys are real good comedians,’ ” he laughed at the recording session. “After I did Bob Dylan’s part, it kind of hit me that I guess this is way more important than I could ever imagine.” Wayne said the opportunity to be involved in such a major undertaking is something his children can hold on to forever. As for his mother, he chuckled when he said that all she asked was that he get Gladys Knight’s photo for her. “I’m still overwhelmed,” Weezy said, looking around the room at the galaxy of stars that ranged from Pink and Carlos Santana to Usher and Barbra Streisand. “I was like, ‘Where do I fit in?’ I thought my name got mixed up.” The new twist on the 25-year-old anthem has a decidedly different slant, with a number of rappers participating on the track . Haggis at first joked that Wayne sang his verse just like Dylan. “Very much like Bob,” he quipped. But the director said the sum of the parts on the remake will be just as inspiring as the original. “The great thing about working with so many people, ” Haggis said, “these artists of this caliber, where you know them from this type of music or that, but when they really come together to sing this type of song, you don’t expect Lil Wayne to be singing like this or Pink to be singing like that, or even Tony Bennett to be singing like that or Barbara [Streisand]. It was wonderful how they all morphed together.” Learn more about what you can do to help with earthquake-relief efforts in Haiti , and for more information, see Think MTV . Lauren Conrad Tops New York Times Best Seller List Again

Former ‘Hills’ star’s second young-adult novel, Sweet Little Lies, makes it to #1 on Children’s Chapter Books list. By Jocelyn Vena Lauren Conrad Photo: Getty Images It seems in Lauren Conrad’s world it’s not just the lies that are sweet. Her second young-adult novel, Sweet Little Lies, released less than a year after her first, L.A. Candy, is the former “Hills” star’s latest book to hit the top of the best seller list. Conrad has topped the New York Times list for Children’s Chapter Books for the week of February 21 for Lies, which was published earlier this month. In a statement to People, Conrad said that it feels good that her book is a success. “It’s so gratifying for my second book to be so successful and it was so fun to write! The characters were already developed so I really enjoyed the process so much more this time around,” she said. “All the characters have become like my friends now. “I just sat in bed writing and it was the best process,” she continued. “Who gets to work from home in their PJs? I’m just so thankful to my fans. Everyone is coming out to see me in the snow. I just can’t believe it.” MTV News checked in with Conrad while she was in New York promoting the book, and she said that this time around her heroine, Jane, finds that her life is about to get a lot more complicated thanks to the pitfalls of fame. “I think that if fans take anything away from the book, [they should realize] there’s a back side to every story,” she explained. “And when you’re reading tabloids and seeing these people’s lives exposed, it does affect them and it is hard to go through as a young girl.”

‘We Are The World’ Remake Premieres Tonight During Olympics Opening Ceremonies

Director Paul Haggis and producer RedOne give a preview of the Haiti benefit single and video. By Jocelyn Vena Wyclef Jean, Kanye West and Jennifer Hudson perform at the “We Are The World 25 Years for Haiti” Photo: Kevin Mazur/ WireImage “We Are the World — 25 for Haiti” is set to premiere on Friday night (February 12) at 7:30 p.m. ET, during the opening ceremony of the Olympics in Vancouver. The song features appearances by a number of artists including Janet Jackson, Justin Bieber, Jordin Sparks, Kanye West, Lil Wayne and Pink — along with some newly added artists who won’t be revealed until the remake airs. But while we wait for the debut of the Haiti benefit, organized by Lionel Richie and Quincy Jones, we have a preview from the people behind the song. “I just keep the class of the original one,” producer Wyclef Jean also said he added a “Haitian influence” to the song. The video’s director, Paul Haggis , also spoke to MTV News about his involvement in the project and admitted he “embraced the chaos” of shooting everyone from Celine Dion to Kanye West, most of whom recorded the track on February 1 in Los Angeles. “You hear these stories about people checking their egos at the door, and it really is true,” the “Crash” director explained. “They came and stood forever and were glorified extras a lot of the time. They just stood in the corner and waved.” Even in a room full of stars, the participants put the cause, helping raise money for Haiti’s earthquake recovery, above all else. “It was hot and it was crowded,” Haggis said, but as a director, he was almost disappointed by how well everyone got along. “When there’s chaos, there’s friction. Where there’s fiction, there’s drama, and I knew I’d have fun things to shoot. Unfortunately, there wasn’t as much drama as I expected. People really got along very well.” The video was shot in 3-D , and green-screen technology will eventually allow viewers at home to place themselves in the chorus. “You would think we have a full-blown motion picture going in there,” Richie marveled at a press conference earlier this month. “We have 3-D cameras, we have Technicolor cameras, we have every imaginable form of technology. You can put yourself into the ‘We Are the World’ family from the computer.” The other “We Are the World” artists include Miley Cyrus, Wyclef Jean, Jamie Foxx, Josh Groban, Keri Hilson, Zac Brown Band, Akon, Brandy, Melanie Fiona, Mya, Musiq Soulchild, Katharine McPhee, Trey Songz, Faith Evans, Joel and Benji Madden, members of Sugarland, Jennifer Hudson, Jason Mraz, India.Arie, Mary Mary, Tyrese Gibson, Raphael Saadiq, Rob Thomas, Usher, the Fray’s Isaac Slade, pianist Ethan Bortnick, Enrique Iglesias, Robin Thicke, Jamie Foxx, Maroon 5’s Adam Levine, the Jonas Brothers, Nicole Scherzinger, Julianne Hough, Barbra Streisand, Carlos Santana, Natalie Cole, BeBe Winans, Orianthi, Heart’s Ann and Nancy Wilson, Freda Payne, Harry Connick Jr., Earth, Wind & Fire, the Beach Boys’ Brian Wilson and Al Jardine, Tony Bennett, composer A.R. Rahman, “American Idol” judge Randy Jackson, Patti Austin and Gladys Knight. Actors Jeff Bridges, Vince Vaughn and Jimmy Jean-Louis were there, as well as some “WATW” offspring: Nicole Richie (Lionel’s daughter), “Parks and Recreation” star Rashida Jones (Quincy’s daughter) and the members of 3T (the sons of Tito Jackson), Taj, Taryll and TJ Jackson. All proceeds from “We Are the World” singles and video sales will go to the newly formed charity We Are the World Foundation LLC and will then be distributed to Haiti relief efforts. Tony Yayo Hopes Eminem Will Join G-Unit’s U.S. Tour

‘It would be an honor if Em came out,’ he tells Mixtape Daily. By Shaheem Reid Tony Yayo Photo: Rahman Dukes/MTV News The O.D.: A Mixtape Daily Exclusive In a couple of weeks, the G-Unit will be heading overseas for an international tour. Come June, the 50 Cent-captained team is scheduled to do something they haven’t done in quite some time: tour the United States. Although no dates or other acts have been announced for the bill, Tony Yayo is hoping at least Slim Shady will be on the road with them. “I’m not sure if Eminem is gonna be a part of the bill,” Yayo said recently in New York. “I know 50 wants to go out and do the U.S. tour. It would be an honor if Em came out. Shout to Em, the whole D12, everybody out there. “My best experience was [the] Anger Management [3 tour] with 50 and Eminem,” Yayo added. “They was killing each other on the tour, it was crazy. That was an ill tour. Em comes out, Fif comes out, D12, Proof was still alive — rest in peace to Proof . That’s one of the best hype men ever.” While Yayo was fantasizing out loud, he threw another name in the mix. “You know what? I would love to see Eminem, Dre and 50 do a big tour, so I could make millions of dollars,” he said. “I’ll be a stagehand and work in the back. I wouldn’t even care. I know I’ll make a million dollars lifting stuff. It’s an honor to be in their presence.” Obviously, it would be a huge undertaking to get all these guys on the road together, but Yayo and the fans can dream, can’t they? “With guys like Em and Dre and Fif, these guys got busy schedules,” the Queens native said. “Em is working on another album. Fif got about 15 movies; he’s working on another movie right now called ‘The Gun.’ Dre — come on, man, you see them Dr. Dre headphones selling like hot cakes everywhere you go. Those guys are busy guys. I feel blessed I could say that I know Eminem, Dr. Dre and 50 Cent. A lot of artists beg to do a song with Eminem, beg to do a song with 50 Cent, beg to do a song with Dre — I’ve experienced all those worlds.” Yayo said that his new album might be called Godfather of the Ghetto, and like Lloyd Banks’ next album, he wants to put it out this summer while the Unit are on tour. As for when 50 might release another LP, Tony said Fif isn’t focused on that right now. “50 is like a chameleon,” Yayo said. “What I seen from Fif, he’s in Will Smith mode; he’s shooting movie after movie. I know he’s definitely supporting me and Banks’ albums.” For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines . Exclusive: Lil Wayne Plays Evil Trick On Short Dawg — Watch It Here!

Watch exclusive clip from DJ Scoob Doo’s ‘The Nino Brown Story, Part 2’ right here! By Shaheem Reid Short Dawg and Lil Wayne Photo: MTV News You’ve seen video clips right here on MTVNews.com from DJ Scoob Doo’s unprecedented access into Lil Wayne’s world. Scoob has taken the footage and turned it into two DVDs, “The Nino Brown Story,” parts 1 and 2. During a recent trip to Atlanta (before Wayne’s jail sentence was postposted earlier this week), Scoob was finally able to present Wayne with the latest DVD, and the Cash Money millionaire gave it his stamp of approval. ” ‘Nino Brown Part 2,’ sh– t crazy!” Wayne is seen saying with a grin a couple of weeks ago in ATL. Weezy was surrounded by Young Money members Gudda Gudda and Short Dawg. In the DVD, Wayne plays a wicked trick on Dawg, a native of Houston. When Short falls asleep in the studio, Wayne puts hot sauce in a teaspoon. Then, the multi platinum prankster puts the spoon in Short’s mouth, literally giving him a rude awakening. “The ‘Nino Brown’ superstar in the building!” Wayne said to Short and the room full of his friends, still ribbing his artists for the escapades in the DVD. Short took the joke in stride, quoting lines from “New Jack City” (from which the DVD takes its name): “Am I my brother’s keeper? “I went out like G Money in that bitch, man!” Short continued, talking about his look in the DVD. Meanwhile, Wayne was tickled at how Scoob captured his jokester side. “You gotta really pay attention the editing and you gotta pay attention to how your verse comes on when you wake up,” Wayne told Short. “Soon as the verse come on, that boy wake up [and starts drinking]. If you would have start singing the verse, that would have been the hardest sh– that Martin Luther King died for. For real!” As the night proceeds, Short drops more famous lines from “New Jack.” “You’re a murderer, Nino!” Short yells, getting everyone to laugh. “Sit your five-dollar ass down before I make change!” Related Videos Lil Wayne Goes To Jail Related Artists Lil Wayne
