2 Chainz Tells Fans To ‘Expect A Lot Of Surprises’ On Debut

MC tells MTV News Based on a T.R.U. Story, which features Kanye West, will have ‘substance.’ By Rob Markman 2 Chainz Photo: MTV News There are certain benefits that come with being one of the hottest up-and-coming talents in the rap game; just ask 2 Chainz . “I’m working with people like Kanye , of course. I’m in a good creative space right now,” Deuce told MTV News about his mindset while putting the finishing touches on his debut solo album, Based on a T.R.U. Story. “I’m able to get my hands on a lot of things that I need. I have access to a lot of artists right now. I have great production.” We caught up with the MC formerly known as Tity Boi on the set of MTV2’s upcoming game show “Hip Hop Squares” and spoke about what fans can expect from his highly anticipated Def Jam release. “You can expect a lot of surprises. I like to bring the element of surprise back in hip-hop; bring the enjoyment and anticipation,” he said. Fans will have to wait until August 14 to get their hands on the LP, but the Atlanta rap virtuoso plans to release a single entitled “No Lie” on May 1. “I don’t wanna leak a record right now, I’m doing so many features and ‘Riot’ is doing so well, I don’t want to cause any kind of confusion.” To say he’s doing well is a bit of an understatement. 2 Chainz is currently featured on Young Jeezy’s “SupaFreak,” Nicki Minaj’s “Beez in the Trap” and Kanye West’s latest G.O.O.D. Music single “Mercy.” His current solo single, “Riot,” is quickly becoming a staple for hip-hop mixshow radio DJs. For the most part, 2 Chainz is classified as a trap rapper whose material mainly revolves around the drug game and street life. With Based on a T.R.U. Story, he plans to change all of that. “From me you can expect concepts; you can expect things that you can think about, substance,” he explained. “Although I have a trap background and I’m heavy with the street credibility, I also have the mind frame to expand a few ideas and some current events, ya dig?” What kind of surprises are you hoping to hear on 2 Chainz’s debut? Juvenile Imagines Soulja Slim As A Tupac-Style Hologram

‘Just to be able to do that is crazy to me,’ Juvie tells ‘RapFix Live.’ By Rob Markman, with reporting by Sway Calloway Juvenile on “RapFix Live” Photo: Natasha Chandel/ MTV News After Tupac Shakur was further immortalized with a posthumous, holographic performance this past weekend at Coachella, many have wondered what other hip-hop legends might get the holo-treatment. The Notorious B.I.G., Eazy-E and Wu-Tang’s Ol’ Dirty Bastard are just a few examples of rap legends who were taken before their time; Soulja Slim is another. “That was my ‘Pac,” Juvenile said of the New Orleans rap icon who was slain in 2003. “I told him that all the time: ‘I think you’re the greatest rapper in the world. It’s a lot of things you just gotta straighten out outside of that.’ ” Juvie pondered the possibility of seeing his old friend again onstage when he appeared on Wednesday’s (April 18) “RapFix Live.” Though he would love nothing more than to see his friend and collaborator get his just due, he did admit to being conflicted about using the holographic technology to bring Slim to the stage. “I mean, that’s a touchy one there. I don’t know, man, because I’m so used to seeing him in a certain light, next to me, I put him on a pedestal,” he said. “To see him in a hologram — just for him to be put in a sentence with Tupac, I think it would be something good. I can’t see nothing bad coming out of it. I think the advancement of technology is a great thing. Just to be able to do that is crazy to me.” DJ Khaled, also a guest on Wednesday’s “RFL,” marveled when he saw Shakur grace the Coachella stage. “When I see what Dre was doin’ with ‘Pac, I was excited,” he said. “We love ‘Pac. I thought it was special.” The charismatic DJ was OK with the somewhat controversial display because it was approved by Tupac’s mom, Afeni Shakur. “As long as you talk to the family members and they co-sign it, then we salute it,” he said. Juvenile echoed that sentiment. “That’s the same way I feel about Ms. Linda,” he said, referencing Soulja Slim’s mother. “Just knowing that Ms. Afeni had something to do with it, it’s a good thing.” Which late rapper would you like to see as a hologram? Cash Money Lets You Do ‘Whatever You Want,’ Kevin Rudolf Says

‘Don’t Give Up’ singer says working with the label is ‘like going to school with no homework.’ By Jocelyn Vena Kevin Rudolf Photo: Michael Caulfield/ Getty Images Considering that Kevin Rudolf has written enough pop songs for artists like Jesse McCartney and Leona Lewis, it comes as no surprise that he can craft a pop song for himself. The Cash Money artist dropped “Don’t Give Up” this week after he decided to embrace that lighter side for himself. “It’s the first song I wrote for the album. I wrote it right when I got to New York from L.A. I hadn’t really written a song for myself in a long time. I got really inspired. I left L.A. and I felt a thousand pounds were off my shoulders,” he said of the song, which will serve as his next album’s lead single. “This was a message I wrote to myself and in the end it reaches other people and makes them feel good. “Everyone’s trying to be edgy all the time and it’s not edgy anymore,” he later explained. “And I just wanted to have the courage to put something powerful into the world.” The upbeat track is full of folky bounce and handclaps that perfectly mirror the sunshine of the lyrics, where Rudolf sings, “So don’t give up, don’t look down/’Cause your time is gonna come around/ Don’t look back come to fall/ Baby, you were born to be a star.” Given that Rudolf has explored many other people’s pop personas in the past, forging his own was an interesting step to take. “It’s different. If I’m writing for the other artists, I’m focused on them and the subject matter and what’s going on in their lives. It just depends. Obviously if you’re gonna work on Selena Gomez you know you’re making an uptempo usually, usually more of a dance record, usually lighter subject matter, obviously,” he explained. “If I’m working with Lil Wayne, I know I’m making something that’s a lot harder, obviously making hip-hop, making beats more than I am writing a song necessarily,” he continued. “But usually the ones that just, like this one just came straight out, like I didn’t even write it, so that one, I knew it was for me. The more I got into it, I knew it was actually right. And then [Cash Money bosses] Slim and Baby heard it and then they felt the same way, so there we were.” Rudolf notes that being on a label like Cash Money affords him the opportunity to try out new sounds, without any objection from his superiors. “It’s like, being on Cash Money, it’s like going to school with no homework. It’s like you just show up and it’s awesome and you get to do whatever you want as long as you’re working and you’re creative and you’re contributing, they don’t care what you do,” he said. “I mean that in a great way. I don’t think you would get the artistry from Nicki Minaj and Wayne and Drake and all these people if you were being told what to do. There’s no way. And that’s why Cash Money has very creative artists. “They don’t have the filter that many record company A&R’s and label bosses have. They trust that you’re the artist,” he continued. “You don’t tell Wayne, ‘A little more energy in this part and less cursing,’ and if I have a day where I feel great and I want to write a song called ‘Don’t Give Up’ and share that with the world, then they’re all for it.” Related Artists Kevin Rudolf

How Will Kanye West, DJ Khaled Follow ‘Way Too Cold’?

‘Expect another monstrous earthquake to hit the streets,’ Khaled promises MTV News of his next Kanye collabo. By Rob Markman DJ Khaled Photo: MTV News If you happen to feel the ground shake in the next few months, don’t be alarmed: Chances are, you’ll just be feeling the after effects of another Kanye West and DJ Khaled single drop. Originally, Kanye’s Kim Kardashian-loving single “Way Too Cold” ( originally titled “Theraflu” ) was slated for the boisterous Cash Money disc jock’s upcoming Kiss the Ring LP, but Khaled didn’t mind giving Yeezy first dibs because the two have another in the stash. “Me and Kanye West went back in the lab and we made another record and got some features on there too,” Khaled told MTV News after a taping of “Hip Hop Squares,” careful not to let too many deets leak. “I can’t really talk about it, so expect another monstrous earthquake to hit the streets.” Throughout his career, Khaled has served as a master matchmaker, pairing the likes of Lil Wayne, Rick Ross and T-Pain on an array of high-powered posse tracks like “We Takin’ Over” and “Welcome to My Hood.” His latest single, “Take it to the Head,” groups Weezy, Rozay, Nicki Minaj and Chris Brown, and on his next LP, the charismatic Khaled promises more of the same. ” Kiss the Ring is gonna be the real deal,” he said. When it comes to his collaborations with West, Khaled throws all the rules out the window. On “Way Too Cold,” the Chi-Town virtuoso not only pissed off PETA by boasting that his mink was draggin’ on the floor, he also confessed his love for Kim Kardashian, tossed a nod to Wiz Khalifa and threw a thinly veiled shot at Kardashian’s ex-hubby Kris Humphries. The Hit-Boy-supplied beat and Kanye’s ear-catching lyrics are what makes the Khaled-assisted track stand out. “On my end, I got this thing with ‘Ye where I tell him there’s no rules and there’s no regulations. It’s no format, and ain’t nobody gonna tell us nothing on what we’re gonna do,” Khaled told MTV News on April 5. The Miami-based DJ/producer wouldn’t say much else about his and Yeezy’s next release, but who knows? Maybe he will spill the beans when he appears on today’s (April 18) “RapFix Live” with host Sway Calloway. Catch Future, DJ Khaled and Juvenile on “RapFix Live” today at 4 p.m. ET on MTV.com, and be sure to join the Twitter conversation using the hashtag #RapFixLive. The Band Drummer Levon Helm In Final Stages of Cancer Battle

‘Thank you fans and music lovers who have made his life so filled with joy and celebration,’ reads a message on Helm’s website. By Gil Kaufman Levon Helm Photo: Getty Images Levon Helm, former drummer for Rock and Roll Hall of Fame group the Band, announced on Tuesday that he is in the final stages of a long-running battle with cancer. Helm, 71, whose signature Southern drawl helped make iconic songs such as “The Weight,” “Up on Cripple Creek” and “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down” rock classics, was first diagnosed with cancer in 1998. “Levon is in the final stages of his battle with cancer. Please send your prayers and love to him as he makes his way through this part of his journey,” read a note from his daughter Amy and wife Sandy . “Thank you fans and music lovers who have made his life so filled with joy and celebration … he has loved nothing more than to play, to fill the room up with music, lay down the back beat, and make the people dance! He did it every time he took the stage…
” After his initial diagnosis with throat cancer, Helm struggled to regain his voice and pay spiraling medical bills. Though he initially lost his ability to sing, Helm continued to play drums, mandolin and harmonica alongside daughter Amy in a series of shows at his Woodstock, New York, studios called the Midnight Ramble. Since 2004, the shows have grown in legend, attracting everyone from Elvis Costello and Norah Jones to My Morning Jacket, Steve Earle and Emmylou Harris. The weekly concerts attracted sold-out audiences that not only helped pay the bills, but also kick-started Helm’s recording career and produced the back-to-back Grammy-winning albums Dirt Farmer and Electric Dirt . Born on May 26, 1940, Helm grew up in a musical home and was plucked by rocker Ronnie Hawkins to join his band in 1957. It was during his stint with Hawkins that he was united with four other musicians who would make up the core of the Band: Richard Manuel, Rick Danko, Robbie Robertson and Garth Hudson. They eventually split with Hawkins and in 1965 hooked up with Bob Dylan to help the folk icon transition into an electric sound. The Band went on to release a string of rock classics and broke up in 1976 after an all-star Thanksgiving concert at the Winterland ballroom in San Francisco that was filmed by Martin Scorsese and released as “The Last Waltz.” Related Artists The Band

Drake Proclaims ‘I’m A Proud Young Jewish Boy’ On ‘HYFR’ Set

Cash Money videographer Derrick G. catches up with Drake during his re-Bar Mitzvah. By Rob Markman Drake in his video for “HYVR” Photo: Universal “Money just changed everything.” Those are the words that opened Drake ‘s Thank Me Later album. Hell yeah, it changed everything. Just look at Drizzy’s recently released “HYFR” video as an example. In the Director X-helmed clip, Drake stages a second Bar Mitzvah to re-establish his commitment to the Jewish faith. “I’m proud, a proud young Jewish boy. When I had a Bar Mitzvah back in the day, my mom really didn’t have that much money. We kinda just did it in the basement of an Italian restaurant, which I guess is kinda like a faux pas,” Drake told Cash Money videographer Derrick G on the video’s Miami set. “I told myself that if I ever got rich, I’d throw myself a re-Bar Mitzvah. That’s the concept for the video.” Drake dropped some childhood party footage at the top of the “HYFR” video, and while it looked like a good time, we’re sure it paled in comparison to his adult Bar Mitzvah, which features Lil Wayne, DJ Khaled, Birdman and Trey Songz. The behind-the-scenes documentary shows the Toronto MC interacting with his YMCMB family and his real-life family. “I have some of my mother’s friends, some of my friends,” he said to the camera, gesturing toward Birdman and Khaled, who were seated in the Miami synagogue. “Stunna Man and Khaled had to come and show their support. I learned my Torah portions; they had to come hear me read it.” The set-visit video is filled with a ton of fun moments, but none more thrilling than when Lil Wayne performs his verse from the song. Weezy, who starts off in a suit and ski mask, begins to peel back his wardrobe with each passing rhyme until he is in a Truk Fit T-shirt, banging his skateboard across a banquet table. Birdman Jr. is clearly the life of the party. “Maybe in the world, there might be somebody crazier and more energetic and more talented, but I don’t know where the f— they’re at,” Drake said. “This guy gets on the camera every single time and kills that sh–. That’s why he’s Lil Wayne.” What did you think of Drake’s “HYFR” video? Share your review in the comments! Related Videos MTV News Extended Play: Drake Related Artists Drake

Exclusive: Kaskade And Skrillex Team Up For ‘Lick It’ Video

Kaskade tells MTV News the duo did ‘the unexpected’ for the clip, which premiered Tuesday on MTV.com. By Akshay Bhansali Kaskade Photo: Getty Images When Kaskade first revealed that he and Skrillex had produced a song together , fans, artists and critics alike eagerly anticipated the event. Just what would a Kaskade/Skrill team-up sound like? The result was “Lick It,” the Fire and Ice standout that seamlessly integrates both of their sounds. “Collaborating with Skrillex for the track and video of ‘Lick It’ was one of the more unique opportunities I had when recording Fire & Ice, ” Kaskade told MTV News on Tuesday (April 17), the same day their collaborative “Lick It” video exclusively debuted on MTV.com. “Skrillex and I have different styles, but that is part of what made it fun. I like doing the unexpected, and this track and video is something truly distinctive.” After the kaleidoscopes and cityscapes of “Eyes” (featuring Mindy Gledhill), Rebecca and Fiona rocking out with ice skaters on “Turn It Down,” and Kaskade getting his “Sliver” on with Skylar Grey in “Room for Happiness,” the video for “Lick It” is a gritty, technically sophisticated endeavor, helmed by L.A.-based filmmaker Sean Stiegemeier, whose credits include Zedd’s “Shave It” video. “It was a great honor to work with these two artists,” Stiegemeier told MTV News. “The collaboration could not had been more ideal as a director. They would allow me to throw out some wild ideas and then work together towards a concept that we all created and enjoyed.” And wild it is. Filmed in snowy Iceland, the vid depicts a bloody An

G. Dep, Ex-Bad Boy Rapper, Found Guilty Of Murder

He faces 15 years to life in prison when he’s sentenced May 8. By Nadeska Alexis G. Dep Photo: Denise Truscello/ WireImage Former Bad Boy rapper G. Dep, born Trevell Coleman, was convicted of second-degree murder in New York on Tuesday (April 17) following a trial that began after Coleman admitted to killing a man in 1993 during a botched robbery attempt. In late 2010, Coleman came forward to confess that he’d shot a man , identified by police as John Henkel, nearly two decades earlier in Harlem. According to Coleman’s story, he attempted to rob a man on a Harlem corner, then shot him and rode off on a bicycle, not knowing whether the victim had survived. Opening statements in the trial were made last week, on April 10, and one day later, Coleman dropped a bombshell on prosecutors by changing up his story . He claimed that while he did shoot someone, it was not Henkel. Despite the change in story, the prosecution stood firm, contending that Henkel was the only victim who fit the details of Coleman’s confession. “Eighteen years ago, the defendant made a calculated decision to steal from, shoot and kill an innocent person on the street,” Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus R. Vance Jr. said in a statement. Trevell Coleman is expected to face a minimum sentence of 15 years to life in prison on May 8. After the jury delivered a guilty verdict for the 37-year-old, defense lawyer Anthony Ricco praised his client’s efforts to be honest. “He has a conscience and a heart, and his conscience and his heart brought him to where he is today,” Ricco told reporters after the trial. “He’s probably making the most powerful statement a rapper of his era can make, which is to be accountable and to do the right thing.” Coleman saw a brief rise to fame beginning in 1998 with an appearance on “The Mall” from Gang Starr’s Moment of Truth album. Later that year he signed to Diddy’s Bad Boy Records, and in 2001 he dropped his debut album, Child of the Ghetto, which spawned the hit single “Special Delivery.” Still, the album failed to be a commercial success, and although he followed up with the 2004 mixtape The Deputy: The Sheriff Is Back in Town Volume 1, a slew of arrests, ranging from drug charges to grand larceny, put an end to his career for good.
