Young The Giant Are Inseparable On ‘First Date’

California rock quintet reflect on their rise to fame, from little league soccer to a sold-out tour. By Rya Backer Rya Backer with Young the Giant Photo: MTV News Spend any time with Young the Giant and you’ll quickly learn that the quintet from Irvine, California, offers more than just rock music. Not to say that their music is something to be brushed off: Their choruses are anthemic, drums stomping, and guitar and bass intricate and commanding. It all results in a sound that music critics would describe as “sweeping,” “lush,” or more simply “whole” — with every band member getting their fair share of shine. On my First Date with Young the Giant to one of my old college haunts, the Pizza Box in Manhattan’s Greenwich Village, it became clear that the reason they treat each other so fairly is simple: They’re best friends. They’ve spent nearly every day of the past five years together — yes, that does include living together. And even before they were Young the Giant, most of them were childhood friends. (Lead singer Sameer Gadhia and Payam Doostzadeh met playing little-league soccer.) Their years of work seemed to have paid off nicely. There’s their 2011 VMA performance , a sold-out tour, and a cushy bus for them to get from show to show in. But Doostzadeh (full disclosure: my fellow Persian) has a much more humble approach to gauging when he and his friends first “made it.” “Making it was the fact that we’re now on a tour, that we have a crew,” he explained, referencing their past ventures that were a lot more hands-on. “So we don’t have to load in and load out our gear.” After looking back on the past five years together ( always together), where do the guys see themselves in five years? “I don’t think any of us have a plan. … I don’t think we even know what’s gonna happen in the next year. That’s what makes it exciting for us,” stated Gadhia. We’ll at least assume they’ll have all gotten their own places by then. Related Videos MTV News First Date Related Artists Young The Giant

E-40 Drops ‘Unlimited Music’ With Three Albums In One Week

‘That’s all I do, studios are my life,’ E-40 tells ‘RapFix Live’ about The Block Brochure collection. By Rob Markman E-40 on “RapFix Live” Photo: Natasha Chandel/ MTV News E-40 loves to rap — why else would he drop three albums in a single day? Last week, Forty Fonzarelli released The Block Brochure: Welcome to the Soil in three parts, as three separate albums. It may seem like an unorthodox strategy for some, but for the Bay Area rap legend, the decision was quite simple. “I’m independent now and it’s like, hey, I got unlimited music,” E-40 explained when he appeared on “RapFix Live” on Wednesday. “That’s all I do, studios are my life. I have a passion for this, this is what I really want to do.” Forty is definitely a keen businessman as well. His strides in the independent market earned him the nickname Charlie Hustle, but for the ambassador of the Bay, it isn’t all about the money. “I don’t care if I hit the lottery and hit $500 million, I just know that at the end of the day, I’ma make music for myself and my fans,” he said. In 1998, when he was signed to Jive Records, E-40 dropped the double CD The Element of Surprise, around the same time acts like Tupac, the Notorious B.I.G., Wu-Tang Clan and Bone Thugs-N-Harmony were dropping their first double discs. While the idea of dropping that much music at once was still new to rap artists, E-40 always had his eyes set for more. “I used to tell Jive all the time, why we gotta wait a year to put out an album?” he remembered. Now that he doesn’t have to adhere to a major-label release schedule, E-Fizzle has been on a tear. Since 2010, he has released seven albums. Each volume of The Block Brochure boasts 20 songs if you count all the bonus tracks; that’s 60 tracks in total. Not only did Forty feature today’s hottest MCs like 2 Chainz, Dorrough and Kendrick Lamar, he also reached out to some old-time Bay Area favorites like B-Legit, Hieroglyphics and Too $hort. What do you think of E-40’s The Block Brochure: Welcome to the Soil trilogy? Tell us in the comments. Related Videos ‘RapFix Live’ Kicks The Slang With E-40 Related Artists E-40

Whitney Houston’s Final Autopsy Results Revealed

Loose pills and a small spoon with a ‘white crystal like substance’ were found in late singer’s hotel room. By Kara Warner Whitney Houston Photo: Lester Cohen/ WireImage Although the official cause of Whitney Houston’s death was recently announced as accidental drowning , the L.A. County coroner released its final report Wednesday (April 4) that provides new details about Houston’s condition when authorities arrived on the scene at the Beverly Hilton on February 11. According to the report obtained by People and E! Online , Houston complained of a sore throat so she decided to take a bath before getting ready for Clive Davis’ pre-Grammy party. When Houston’s assistant returned to the hotel room after running an errand, the singer was face down in the bathtub in 13 inches of “extremely hot” water, which caused a burn on Houston’s back. When police arrived on the scene, they found an open bottle of champagne, bottles of prescription drugs and loose pills scattered about the room. In the bathroom, they found an ashtray with several cigarette butts and a small spoon with a “white crystal like substance in it and a rolled up piece of white paper.” The report also states that the white substance was found on a small mirror. Kristy McCracken of the Beverly Hills Police Department wrote in her final report that she reasoned Houston “possibly overdosed on a narcotic substance, prescription medications, over the counter medications and alcohol” and noted a “bloody purge” coming out of Houston’s nose, as well as minor abrasions on her face, arms and legs. Aside from the traces of cocaine, Benadril, the muscle relaxer Flexeril, marijuana and Xanax found in the toxicology screening, the report cited Houston’s body as being “well built, muscular and fairly well nourished.” The man who performed the autopsy, Dr. Christopher Rogers, chief of the coroner’s Forensic Medicine Division, and chief medical examiner-coroner Lakshmanan Sathyavagiswaran wrote that Houston’s drowning was due to the effects of atherosclerotic heart disease and cocaine use. They also detected mild emphysema, pulmonary edema and leiomyomas (benign tumors) in her uterus. Houston was laid to rest in her hometown of Newark, New Jersey , on February 19. Mary J. Blige Responds To Burger King Ad Criticism

‘If you’re a Mary fan, you have to know I would never allow an unfinished spot like the one you saw go out,’ she says in a statement to TMZ. By Kara Warner Mary J. Blige Photo: Scott Weiner/PictureGroup In the wake of the headlines and harsh criticism generated by the debut and subsequent removal of Mary J. Blige’s Burger King ad , the Queen of Soul has finally spoken out on the matter. According to a statement Blige issued to TMZ , the final version of the commercial — in which Blige appears standing on top of a table belting out the ingredients of the fast-food chain’s new Crispy Chicken Wrap to the soundtrack of her single “Don’t Mind” — was not what the singer thought she signed up for. “I agreed to be a part of a fun and creative campaign that was supposed to feature a dream sequence. Unfortunately, that’s not what was happening in that clip,” Blige told the website. “I understand my fans being upset by what they saw. But, if you’re a Mary fan, you have to know I would never allow an unfinished spot like the one you saw go out.” The ad received harsh criticism from fans, particularly those in the black community who complained that the content promoted a negative stereotype. Burger King immediately pulled the ad from its YouTube channel, but claimed it did so because of music-licensing issues . The company said it hopes to have the “ads back on the air soon,” though they did not specify if the ads would be the same or if they would edit a new version. Rumors have surfaced that Blige received $2 million for the ad — and she’s not the only one. Other celebrities promoting the burger chain’s new menu include soccer star David Beckham, actress Salma Hayek and late-night host Jay Leno. What did you think of Mary J.’s Burger King ad? Why Isn’t Justin Bieber In Far East Movement Video?

‘He’s behind the camera,’ the group jokes to MTV News about Biebs’ absence from ‘Live My Life’ clip. By Jocelyn Vena Far East Movement Photo: MTV News Justin Bieber proclaims that he just wants to “Live My Life” on the hook for Far East Movement’s latest track. The Dirty Bass single is a feel-good, fist-pumping anthem about, well, living your life. The dance-music-making crew opened up to MTV News about hooking up with the “Boyfriend” singer and bringing him into their world of dirty beats and even dirtier bass. “We got to thank him for being in our world for us,” Kevin Nishimura said about the experience of hitting the studio with Bieber. “When we met with him, [it was like] ‘Let’s do a song that caters to that audience that’s outside the Far East Movement shows going, “We can’t get in, but we live that life.” ‘ And there’s that audience that’s in the club popping the bottles, doing that thing, living that.” Finding that perfect balance and hooking up with the hitmaking teen wasn’t hard since the guys of Far East Movement are all about music encompassing everything and everyone. In their world, there are no restrictions. “We’re always about all-inclusiveness, no matter your race, your sex, whatever it be,” they said. “That’s the type of music we make. So with Justin, it was definitely unexpected as far as both audiences, but it makes sense.” When the guys dropped the party-themed clip for the track, which also features LMFAO, Bieber was noticeably absent from the clip. It follows both Far East Movement and LMFAO as they make their way through a European city, dancing through the streets and riding on an animal-print, double-decker bus. “Just for the record — ’cause we’ve been seeing people like, ‘Where is he in the video?’ — he’s behind the camera,” Nishimura joked. “We sent him one of those party-favor cards saying, ‘You are invited to the Far East Movement/Justin Bieber video shoot,’ but he was working on his thing, you know. He’s got a new single out, his album, so he couldn’t make it. But he said, ‘No matter what, I’m gonna party tonight.’ So it’s all love.” RedOne produced the song. Dirty Bass drops May 8. Madonna’s MDNA: Behind The ‘Eclectic’ #1 Album

Producer Martin Solveig opens up to MTV News about working with the Queen of Pop on her latest chart-topping opus. By Jocelyn Vena Madonna’s MDNA Photo: Interscope Madonna released her latest chart-topping album, MDNA, last week, and whatever special magic she cast in the studio seemed to work. The dance-heavy album sits pretty at #1 this week, selling a whopping 359,000 units, proving that Madonna still is the Queen of Pop. The album is full of dirty and chugging production, with Madge lamenting about her broken heart on some songs and seeking vengeance against a former lover on others. The album gets production assists from William Orbit , Benny Benassi and Martin Solveig , among others, but it’s the contributions from those three that stand as the highlights. Both Solveig and Benassi had a hand in the album’s first two singles, “Girl Gone Wild” (Benassi) and “Give Me All Your Luvin” (Solveig), while Orbit brings some emotional gravitas to the record, recalling their work on Ray of Light. Solveig recently stopped by MTV News and opened up about creating the chart-topping album with Madonna. “We were working with no limits. I think the only thing that she said when we started was ‘I just want people to be able to dance to my music and connect easily with my music,’ and also probably to take some risks at some point,” he explained. “Other than this, it was open to any kind of experimentation.” What Solveig wanted to focus on when it came to experimenting with her was rhythm. “This is why I explored mainly the BPM thing,” he said, referring to the beats per minute of his tracks. “You have slow BPM, very fast BMP songs, twisty and more four to the floor, and I thought it was interesting to explore this, because she hasn’t done that a lot on the past albums. And actually, William did a little of the same. It’s very eclectic. Every song has a little story. It’s a collection of songs that are very different, but you are excited to listen from beginning to end.” With a hit record on her hands, Madonna will have a moment to breathe before she kicks off her world tour later this year. The trek will begin May 29 in Tel Aviv, Israel. Madge will land Stateside August 28 in Philadelphia. Did you pick up Madonna’s latest album this week? Share your reviews in the comments! ‘Katy Perry: Part Of Me’ Trailer: Five Key Scenes

Trailer for upcoming 3-D concert movie shows singer hard at work and interacting with fans. By Fallon Prinzivalli Katy Perry in the trailer for “Katy Perry: Part Of Me” Photo: Imagine Entertainment It’s here, KatyCats! Paramount Pictures debuted Katy Perry’s “Part of Me” trailer for her 3-D concert movie Tuesday night. The trailer offers a glimpse of what audiences can expect from the film, in theaters July 5. The movie gives fans a peek into the “Firework” singer’s personal life . When Perry sat down with MTV News, she said, “Literally, this film is basically like you’re seeing it from my best friend-buddy perspective.” Perry’s always been open with her fans, interacting with them on Twitter and holding meet-and-greets at every show. But the trailer reveals a side of Perry that’s sure to be new to fans. To show you what we mean, here are five key scenes from the trailer. Be Prepared As a commentator says, “She outworks everyone.” There are shots of Perry at the gym, trying on a costume at a fitting, rehearsing her dance moves and testing the wires and ropes for stage stunts. When fans arrive at the arena for a concert, they see the final production, but not all the hard work that went into putting the show together. From the looks of the trailer, audiences will gain a new respect for Perry as they see just how hard she works to give a stellar performance. “Marriage Over” After the words “Marriage Over” flash into view via a newspaper headline, there’s a heartbreaking scene of Perry looking defeated as she’s hunched over her dressing-room table. It shows that while she may work hard at international superstardom, at the end of the day, she’s human and emotional hardships affect her just like the rest of us. We commend Perry for sharing such a personal time in her life with her fans. She’s a Firework The next scene of Perry shows her getting out of a car for a red-carpet event. She has overcome her failed marriage and moved on with her career. The moment is inspirational as Perry continues to take the stage and perform regardless of what’s going on in her personal life. Her strength is sure to leave an impression on viewers. The Long Journey In between scenes of old music videos from the beginning of her career, we learn that Perry wasn’t always the California princess we know and love today. She grew up in a strict Christian home and her performances were limited to church, but she continued following her dreams. After they finally seemed to be within reach, the label she signed with dropped her. We see a younger Perry pouring her heart into her music as she records a song, only to look defeated afterwards as she says in a voiceover, “I was going through some depressing dark times, but it’s a journey.” Embracing Perry’s “Weirdness” We were hoping to see some behind-the-scenes footage of Perry and her spontaneity, and it looks like our wish came true! “Thank you so much for believing in my weirdness,” Perry yells to the audience. She says her goal when she’s performing is “just to make people smile.” What follows is a montage of Perry posing with fans (one of whom is dressed up as her nerdy alter ego, Kathy Beth Terry), sticking her tongue out at the camera and busting out some awkward dance moves. Perry’s fun-loving persona is a big reason fans are so drawn to her as a person. KatyCats will no doubt be pleased by whatever backstage antics this film contains. Nicki Minaj Warns She’ll Never Be ‘One-Dimensional’

‘I went from being a caricature in people’s eyes to becoming someone with a lot of layers,’ Minaj tells Shade 45’s ‘Sway in the Morning.’ By Rob Markman, with reporting by Sway Calloway Nicki Minaj Photo: Slaven Vlasic/ Getty Images There’s more to Nicki Minaj than just a pink wig and her funny voices. Rap’s reigning queen has evolved from a budding New York MC to an omnipresent figure in music and pop culture. She’s come a long way since her 2007 Playtime Is Over mixtape. “I think I went from being a caricature in people’s eyes to becoming someone with a lot of layers,” Nicki told MTV News correspondent Sway Calloway when she appeared on his “Sway in the Morning” Shade 45 radio show on Tuesday. Nicki spoke with Sway and co-host Devi Dev about a range of topics — from her over-the-top 2012 Grammy performance to working with Madonna — but Nicki seemed most eager to emphasize that as many strides as she’s made in her career, her superstar qualities were always there on the inside. “You just gotta realize that I’m never gonna be one-dimensional,” she said. “Even my core fans I think, at times, thought I was one-dimensional when I was doing mixtapes. However, even on the mixtapes, I was singing and I did a song called ‘Can Anybody Hear Me’ on one of my mixtapes where I was singing and talking about being a female rapper and trying to get signed.” “Can Anybody Hear Me” appeared on her 2009 tape Beam Me Up Scotty and featured Nicki spitting about her difficulty securing a record deal. Funny when you think about all of the success she’s now obtained. “When it rains, it pours for real/ Def Jam said I’m no Lauryn Hill/ You can’t rap and sing on the same CD/ The public won’t get it, they got A.D.D.,” Nicki rapped back in ’09. Minaj has since broken down those barriers and her latest album, Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded, is the ultimate brush-off to naysayers who once told Nicki what she couldn’t do. “It’s just been peeling back the layers and now I think the ultimate layer was me saying, ‘Now I’m gonna do whatever kind of music I want to do and you’re free to not like it,’ ” she said. “This new album, Roman Reloaded, when I tell you I am not nervous, I am not fearful; all of those emotions left.” The Young Money superstar’s second album balances her hard-core rap sensibilities with pop tracks produced by RedOne and Dr Luke. Critics have been lukewarm , but Nicki doesn’t want to choose between the two distinct musical genres; it’s all derived from a feeling, she said. “My story is not gonna always entail a hard hip-hop beat, but sometimes it is,” she explained. “A lot of the tracks on this album are just a hard hip-hop beat and just spittin’ and that’s why I enlisted some people like [Cam’ron] and 2 Chainz and the legendary Nas.” What do you think of Roman Reloaded ? Tell us on our Facebook page! To celebrate the release of Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded, we will be examining the “Evolution of Nicki Minaj” throughout the week. Rihanna Won’t Sweat ‘Ranting’ Over Her Chris Brown Reunion

‘It’s very hard for me to accept, but I get it,’ singer tells Elle in May issue of public backlash. By Rebecca Thomas Rihanna on the May 2012 cover of Elle Photo: Tom Munro / Hearst Digital Media Rihanna didn’t call her latest album Talk That Talk for nothing. The Good Girl Gone Bad regularly hits Twitter to hash it out over everything from her taste in ink to her take on fellow R&B divas . But the one subject she’d kept off her tongue was ex-boyfriend Chris Brown. So the Bajan beauty’s decision this year to very publicly reconcile with Brown, who served probation for assaulting her in 2009, by teaming up with him in February on a pair of remixes was widely met with shock and, in many circles, outrage. In the new issue of Elle, however, the blond cover girl tells the magazine she understands her decision is a hard pill for some to swallow. “The bottom line is that everyone thinks differently. It’s very hard for me to accept, but I get it,” she says. “People end up wasting their time on the blogs or whatever, ranting away, and that’s all right. Because tomorrow I’m still going to be the same person. I’m still going to do what I want to do.” Rather than view the violent end of her relationship with Brown as a brutal low to be endured as a victim, the superstar says the fallout from the headline-making assault gave her courage. “It gave me guns,” she says. “I was like, well, f—. [The public knows] more about me than I want them to know. It’s embarrassing. But that was my opening. That was my liberation … Now you know that, so you can say what you want about it. I don’t have anything to hide.” In the wake of her provocative “Birthday Cake” remix with Brown, the 24-year-old was rumored to have reunited with the “Deuces” singer both in and out of the studio. But Rih says in the May issue (out April 17) that she’s focused on changing her single status to “in a relationship,” stressing over the pervasive man shortage and her busy schedule. “I feel like it’s hard for everybody ! I don’t think it has anything to do with being famous. There’s just a major drought out there.” What do you think of Rihanna’s comments about Chris Brown? Tell us in the comments. Ryan Seacrest to Cover the Summer Olympics on NBC

Will Ryan Seacrest be taking over for Matt Lauer on The Today Show ? The American Idol host addressed that rumor this morning… to Matt Lauer on The Today Show . After joking about taking both Lauer’s job and that of weatherman Al Roker, Seacrest revealed that, yes, he has signed a new deal with NBC Universal. But Lauer can rest easy. “The plan is for me to join the NBC family and continue to have a role at the E! network,” Ryan said. “The first assignment will be to join the prime time team for the Olympics on NBC.” From there, who knows. But one thing is certain: this appearance by Seacrest will garner far less criticism for The Today Show than yesterday’s ratings stunt of having Sarah Palin co-host .
