Jerry Sandusky Admits to Showering with Boys, Rejects "Pedophile" Label

Jerry Sandusky, the former defensive coordinator at Penn State who faces 40 counts of sexual abuse charges against a total of eight young boys, is featured on tonight’s Rock Center with Brian Williams . The man in the middle of that university’s scandal speaks to Bob Costas and admits to excerpts from the 23-page grand jury report, specifically that has has showered with youths under the care of his Second Mile charity. “I could say that I have done some of those things. I have horsed around with kids I have showered after workouts. I have hugged them and I have touched their legs without intent of sexual contact,” said Sandusky . Asked about the allegations of abuse, however, Sandusky said “I am innocent” and asked whether or not he’s a pedophile, the ex-coach simply said: “No.” Sandusky is free on $100,000 bail. The grand jury report cites charges that date back to 1994 and includes incidents with boys in hotels room, at Sandusky’s home and on the Penn State campus. Two witnesses – a janitor in 2000 and an assistant coach in 2002 – say they saw Sandusky pinning a boy against a bathroom wall and having anal sex with him. For not reporting his knowledge of sexual misconduct by Sandusky, coach Joe Paterno was fired by Penn State last week. [Photo: Associated Press]

Mike McQueary, Witness to Penn State Scandal, Will Not Coach Saturday

Penn State wide receivers coach Mike McQueary, who witnessed Jerry Sandusky allegedly rape a boy in the team’s locker room in 2002, won’t coach this weekend. Out of fear for McQueary’s safety, the coach, who somehow still has a job, will not be on the field when the embattled Nittany Lions take on Nebraska tomorrow. The university released a statement reading, “Due to multiple threats made against assistant coach Mike McQueary, the university has decided it would be in the best interest of all for assistant coach McQueary not to be in attendance .” McQueary has been under fire for not doing anything to stop the alleged rape, and then going to Joe Paterno, the legendary head coach, instead of the police. Penn State fired Joe Paterno abruptly Wednesday night. Despite the fact that he didn’t stop Sandusky, the team’s former defensive coordinator, who was just indicted on 40 counts of child sex abuse, his job is safe for now. According to Pennsylvania’s Morning Call newspaper, the board, which was decisive in axing Paterno, does not plan to fire McQueary or ask him to step down. But he won’t be on the field tomorrow. The Penn State board of trustees have reportedly asked new interim coach Tom Bradley to keep Mike McQueary from coaching from the sidelines Saturday. As the sex scandal at the storied college football program continues to unravel, no word on whether Ashton Kutcher’s Twitter editors will weigh in on the latest.

Football World Cup 2010: All Whites at finals

The All Whites booked their place in next year’s football World Cup finals – and New Zealand sporting history – with a dramatic 1-0 win over Bahrain in Wellington last night. A passionate, sellout 35500 crowd at the Cake Tin saw Rory Fallon’s header and Mark Paston’s penalty save give Ricki Herbert’s team a spot at the world’s biggest sporting event for only the second time – and the first since 1982. The final whistle sparked scenes of incredible celebration as the capital got ready to party. Police and stewards had to hold back jubilant fans as the All Whites embarked on a lap of honour. Herbert, who played in the 1982 team, said his team had “given it everything, four years of total commitment”. “We did a little bit of homework and really pulled it out of the top drawer,” he said. ‘ “We thought we’d go through without conceding a goal, we thought one would do it. It’s just so emotional.” Fallon, whose father Kevin was an assistant coach during the 1982 campaign, gave a succinct summary of his all-important goal: “Them ones I don’t miss.” Paston said facing the penalty that would have ended All White hopes was “a bit surreal”. “I basically guessed which way and it ended up in my hands – it was great.” Team captain Ryan Nelsen, who plays for Blackburn Rovers in the English Premier League, paid tribute to the Wellington supporters. “I’ve played in some incredible atmospheres in my time but this is right up there. It’s been brilliant.” Prime Minister John Key was quick to …
