Lolo Jones may be without an Olympic medal, but she is not without controversy or headlines. The sprinter – who lost out on Gold in the 100-meter hurdles when she hit an obstacle on the home stretch and who then finished in fourth place by a tenth of a second yesterday – was the subject of a feature in The New York Times Sunday. And it was far from flattering. The article claimed that Jones “has decided she will be whatever anyone wants her to be – vixen, virgin, victim – to draw attention to herself and the many products she endorses,” referencing the fact that Jones has played up her virginity and her looks over the past few weeks. Appearing on The Today Show this morning, the athlete fought back tears and labeled the piece of journalism a “crazy misogynist hit piece.” “They should be supporting our U.S. Olympic athletes,” Jones told Savannah Guthrie of the newspaper. “Instead they just ripped me to shreds. I just thought that it was crazy because I worked six days a week, every day for four years for a 12-second race.” The Times also compared Jones to Anna Kournikova, a retired tennis player who got a lot of attention for her looks… yet never actually won a single tournament. Faced with that charge, Lolo points to her resume. “I have the American record. I’m the American record-holder indoors. Just because I don’t boast about these things, I don’t think I should be ripped apart by media. I laid it out there, fought hard for my country and it’s just a shame that I have to deal with so much backlash when I’m already so brokenhearted as it is.”

Oscar Pistorius Will Become The First Double-Amputee To Run In Olympics Oscar Pistorius, a double amputee known as the Blade Runner, will get to compete in the London Olympic Games in not only the 1,600-meter relay but also his favorite event, the 400 meters. South Africa named Pistorius, 25, to the team as a competitor in the 400, making him the first amputee track athlete to compete in the Olympics. Pistorius was born without a fibula in both legs, leading to the amputation of each leg halfway between the knee and ankle. He now has artificial limbs that are made of carbon fiber. The spring-like step in his stride was considered an unfair advantage of able-bodied athletes and in 2007 the governing body of track and field, the International Association of Athletics Federations, amended its rules to ban the use of “any technical device that incorporates springs, wheels or any other element that provides a user with an advantage over another athlete not using such a device.” But the Court of Arbitration, an international group that settles disputes, ruled in 2008 that Pistorius did not have an unfair advantage over able-bodied athletes. Pistorius, though, did not qualify for the Beijing Games. Pistorius ran a personal-best 45.07 seconds last year and opened this year with a 45.20, both Olympic-qualifying times. But South Africa’s Olympic-qualifying guidelines demanded he run 45.30 or better at one more international meet before last Saturday to seal a spot in the 400. In November, the news broke that Justin Combs had accepted a full merit-based scholarship to play football for UCLA. But now, some local taxpayers and students are questioning whether the $54,000 scholarship is fair considering that Justin’s dad topped Forbes’ wealthiest hip-hop artists list last month after it was reported that he was worth more than half a billion dollars. “UCLA’s athletic department needs to consider the fact that perhaps there is another athlete on the football team who could perhaps really use this scholarship,” UCLA student Neshemah Keetin told Los Angeles’ CBS News affiliate. “Just being considerate that [with] our economy, students are trying to get to college through athletics and academics as well.” Once the news broke last year, a proud Puff Daddy issued a statement in support of his son. At that point, Justin’s detractors hadn’t voiced their displeasure. “As a parent, today is one of the proudest moments of my life. This is everything a father could want for his son, for him to excel at what he loves to do and is truly passionate about,” he said. “Justin is a shining example of what hard work, determination and a strong mentality can achieve. I am honored to call him my son and am happy that he is fulfilling his dream.” Justin graduated with a 3.75 GPA from Iona Prep high school in New Rochelle, New York, where he was a top-rated cornerback. He received scholarship offers from state universities in Illinois, Virginia and Wyoming. During a CNN interview, the network’s education contributor Dr. Steve Perry defended the young athlete. “He’s done what he needs to do to be successful, and in a meritocracy we have to accept that no matter who your father is, whether he be rich, poor or absent, that you can in fact be successful on your own merit,” he said. “There’s nothing free about a Division I athletic scholarship. It’s 40 hours-plus of work on campus every single week in order to maintain that scholarship.” UCLA spokesman Ricardo Vazquez echoed Perry’s sentiment, explaining that the scholarship was based on Combs’ talent on the football field and not his financial need. “Athletic scholarships, such as those awarded to football or basketball players, do not rely on state funds. Former NFL great Junior Seau was found dead in his home in Oceanside, Calif., today. Police say the likely cause of death was suicide. He was 43 years old. Law enforcement sources reportedly believe Seau, a USC and pro football standout for 20 seasons, died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the chest.
