Will a Rise in Cyber-Terrorism Make Thrillers and Action Films Boring?

So, yes, a group of anonymous hackers broke into Gawker’s system and compromised the security of up to 1.3 billion users in what some are calling one of the largest attacks on a media site to date. But, depending on your level of paranoia, it gets worse. Others have argued that this attack – taken with the recent attacks on Visa, Mastercard and PayPal in response of Wikileaks reprimands – signals a new era of cyber-terrorism where small groups can wreak mass amounts of havoc at will. After taking all of this in, I did what I usually do when the news unsettles me a bit: I thought about movies. Then I realized that a sharp rise in cyber-terrorism will probably ruin movies too.

WikiLeaks hackers threaten British Government

An army of computer hackers is planning to bring down British government websites if Julian Assange, the founder of WikiLeaks, is extradited to Sweden. The 1,500-strong network of online activists has already sabotaged the websites of MasterCard, Visa and the Swedish government with millions of bogus visits. The attacks, termed “Operation Payback”, came after the credit card companies and PayPal, an online payment firm, announced that they would no longer process donations to the anti-secrecy organisation. The group of hackers, called Anonymous, said it would target British government websites if Mr Assange was extradited to Sweden, where he is wanted over allegations of sexual assault. Gregg Housh, an American internet activist who previously worked with the hackers, said: “They will go after the weakest links, because they want to see results. They will probably test a few sites and then decide.” The hackers said they were planning to target Amazon, the online retailer. A message posted on their Twitter account yesterday stated: “Target: wwwdotAmazondotcom locked on!!!”. Mr Assange was arrested by the Metropolitan Police’s extradition squad earlier this week after Swedish prosecutors issued an international arrest warrant. He is due to appear before City of Westminster magistrate’s court on Tuesday, where his lawyers will attempt to secure his release on bail. He has been accused by two women of one count of rape, two of sexual molestation and one of unlawful coercion. He denies the allegations and says that the sex was consensual. One of the hackers said: “It is definitely an information war. The core principle behind it is [that] information is free, governments keep information to themselves, WikiLeaks releases it to the general public and the war occurs.” The hackers’ actions so far have been essentially attacks by volume, known as DDoS, or distributed denial of service, in which the target site is hit with increased numbers of visitors with the intention of exceeding its capabilities and forcing it to crash. In this case, hundreds of volunteers have downloaded something called a botnet, which aids the distribution of the command to attack the site. The volunteer hackers wait until they are given a signal on an internet chat room, before launching the attack. The attacks are illegal in Britain and carry a maximum sentence of two years. A spokesman for PayPal insisted that, despite the attack, the site had not been disrupted. “As far as we are aware there hasn’t been any further impact on the site.” http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/wikileaks/8193210/WikiLeaks-hackers-th… added by: ras_menelik

Photo: thewritingzone , Flickr, CC Yes, the climate bill is dead . No, we’re probably not going to see any meaningful legislation to address carbon pollution for years to come. But climate change is still occurring. Which means that if we’re going to head off the worst case scenarios, we’re going to have to find another route outside of Congress . Congoboy "racist attack" bogus; acid attack self-inflicted

VANCOUVER, Wash.—A woman who gained sympathy worldwide after she claimed a random assailant threw acid on her face came forward Thursday with startling admission: She inflicted the attack on herself. Vancouver police chief Clifford Cook said Bethany Storro admitted under police questioning to fabricating a story about the attack, in which she suffered severe burns. Cook said he did not know a motive for Storro's actions, but added she is “very remorseful.” He said Storro was still being interviewed by detectives. The police chief said that “during the course of the investigation, several discrepancies began to emerge regarding the alleged attack,” leading police to search her home earlier Thursday and interview her. “During the interview, Ms. Storro admitted the injuries were self-inflicted,” Cook said. Police had been seeking a black woman with a ponytail after Storro described the Aug. 30 attack. She had said the woman asked her, “Hey, pretty girl, want something to drink?” then threw acid in her face. She recounted details of the alleged attack at a news conference, with her head wrapped in bandages and her parents by her side. She said she wanted to know why the unnamed assailant had attacked her. After the incident, Storro made several media appearances, but a planned interview on “The Oprah Winfrey Show” was canceled. She said she had received correspondence from people around the world concerned for her well being. http://www.montereyherald.com/national/ci_16095124?nclick_check=1 added by: ampersand

Arizona Man Pleads Guilty To Broadcasting His Sexual Assault On His Unconscious Girlfriend

PHOENIX — A Phoenix man accused of sexually assaulting his unconscious girlfriend and broadcasting the attack live on the Internet has pleaded guilty to three charges. Twenty-two-year-old Jonathan Richard Hock pleaded guilty Thursday to two counts of attempted sexual assault and one count of voyeurism in Maricopa County Superior Court. Hock was arrested in June 2009 after police say he set up a computer Web camera and sexually assaulted his girlfriend of two weeks in her bedroom as she was unconscious from drinking alcohol on Feb. 26. The woman was 20 years old. Police say the video was watched repeatedly until the site it was posted on removed it. The site provided police with a copy of the video. added by: TimALoftis

Madina Lake Bassist Released From Hospital, Still Faces Brain Surgery

‘So we’d finally convinced the doctors to let me take Matthew home,’ brother and bandmate Nathan Leone posted on the band’s blog. By James Montgomery Matthew Leone of Medina Lake Photo: Jay West/ WireImage Madina Lake bassist Matthew Leone — who was beaten and left unconscious last week after attempting to intervene in a domestic dispute — has been sent home from the hospital in Chicago, but still faces an uphill battle (including a second round of brain surgery) before he’ll be in the clear. That’s according to his twin brother and Madina Lake frontman, Nathan Leone, who took to the band’s blog on Monday to update fans on Matthew’s condition. “So we’d finally convinced the doctors to let me take Matthew home. He was going nuts in the hospital and they agreed that he would benefit from a more comfortable environment,” Nathan wrote. “The only goal at this point is [to] get him strong enough for his second brain surgery, which is scheduled for the 16th. “It’s going to be a tenuous couple of weeks, we’ll watch him 24 hours a day, make sure he sits still, rests and heals to the fullest extent possible,” the post continued. “We know from the doctors that his future prognosis remains guarded, since the permanency of the physical and neuropsychological damage is yet unknown.” As Nathan Leone told MTV News last week, his brother suffered a broken jaw and nose and a fractured skull after he attempted to break up a fight between a man and a woman on the streets of Chicago. As Leone called police, he was jumped from behind and left bleeding and unconscious. The beating was so severe, Nathan said, that doctors were forced to remove one-third of his brother’s skull to alleviate swelling on the brain. Chicago police have subsequently arrested 33-year-old Justin Pivec in connection with the attack, charging him with aggravated battery causing great bodily harm to Leone and battery for the attack on his wife. And while Matthew Leone slowly recovers from the beating, his medical bills continue to pile up. According to Nathan Leone, neither he nor his brother has health insurance, and so, in order to help with their mounting bills, Madina Lake’s management have partnered with the Sweet Relief Musicians Fund and Pledge Music to begin accepting donations on Matthew Leone’s behalf.
