REVIEW: The Secret World of Arrietty Gets by on Inscrutable Charm

Wispy but sweet as spun sugar, The Secret World of Arrietty feels like a modest but exquisitely trimmed Japanese gift to fans of The Borrowers , British author Mary Norton’s classic children’s books. Having originated in Japan’s Studio Ghibli, home to animated films like Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away , the American version of Arrietty is its third translation; when Disney signed on it added a second director in seasoned sound designer Gary Rydstrom (the Japanese version is directed by Ghibli animator Hiromasa Yonebayashi). And yet the look and feel are unmistakable, adding anime flavor to a story so beloved in the West that the BBC took a crack at it with a live-action version just last year. In many ways it is a felicitous collaboration: The Japanese are known for their appreciation for all things miniature and scrappy young heroines. The two are combined in 14-year-old Arrietty (Bridgit Mendler), a “borrower” living underneath a rural home with her parents, Pod (Will Arnett) and Hominy (Amy Poehler). Borrowers, you soon figure out if you don’t already know, are basically just people who happen to be the size of a full-grown string bean. They lead a parasitic kind of life, though they operate with more stealth and grace than the crow that swoops in on the recalcitrant family cat to peck up a few fleas in the opening scene. The Borrowers need “human beans” to borrow from — their size makes any other kind of subsistence impossible — and yet they live in terror of their benefactors. Instead of instilling fear in Arrietty, constant warnings from her gruff, super-stoical dad and hysterical mother only make her more curious about the young boy who shows up at the house. Shawn (David Henrie) is sickly, and has been sent to the home of his aunt and her housekeeper Hara (an antic Carol Burnett) to convalesce for the summer. Where Arrietty’s parents focus only on her, Shawn’s mother is too wrapped up in work to care for him. But instead of exploring whether a broken-hearted kid might get lonely enough to start seeing tiny redheaded girls rappelling down his bed stand at night, the script (written by Karey Kirkpatrick, it feels very much adapted from the Japanese version, by Hayao Miyazaki and Keiko Niwa) keeps us closer to the concerns of its title character. Which is to say they make gentle suggestion of a young girl’s romantic awakening and negotiation of the world of big-eyed, giant-handed boys. Or perhaps that is a bit of a stretch. As someone unfamiliar with the series (outside of this memorably poignant   This American Life segment about a young girl’s abiding belief in the existence of Borrowers), much about The Secret Life of Arrietty feels enigmatic, maybe even a little undercooked. Why are the borrowers so spooked about big people? Why is Shawn so unfazed by little ones? What’s the deal with Hara and her grudges? Why is Pod so hardcore about not using dollhouse implements to make life easier? What’s the point of being that small and how did they get that way? That you are compelled to either ignore or try and fill in the answers on your own is a testament to the film’s soothing charms, although occasionally the treacly music cues and trembling moments of wide-eyed apprehension are so twee your tweeth hurt. It’s a matinee treat for the very little ones, after all, though in its final scenes Arrietty veers into cigarette-and-turtleneck territory. Shawn, who is facing heart surgery, outlines his mopey philosophy of life: “We all have to die,” he says to Arrietty, by way of goodbye. “Sometimes you just have to accept the hand of fate.” Just when you are ready to stop caring whether a story takes shape to match the lushly hand-drawn layers of this enchanting world — which is to say after an hour or so of half-hearted allusions to human excess, the precious illusions of childhood, possible borrower genocide, and entrenched bigotry — Shawn’s speech pokes you with another tentative stab at meaning. No doubt those legion of Norton fans in the know will be moved as well as dazzled. With a little more care, the rest of us might have been let in on the secret as well. Taylor Swift’s Finest ‘First’ Moments

Swift premieres her ‘Hunger Games’ video ‘Safe & Sound’ on ‘MTV First: Taylor Swift’ Monday (February 13), followed by an exclusive chat. By Jocelyn Vena Taylor Swift Photo: MTV News Taylor Swift will sit down with MTV News’ Sway Calloway on Monday (February 13) for “MTV First: Taylor Swift,” during which she will premiere her video for “Safe & Sound,” followed by an exclusive 30-minute chat. Swift isn’t new at getting the “First” treatment. In May 2011, she sat down with Sway for “MTV First” to premiere her video for “The Story of Us.” During their interview, Swift got personal, even sharing what she loves to do most in her hometown of Nashville, among other things. Before Monday’s latest installment of “MTV First” with Ms. Swift, MTV News is taking a look back at her finest revelations from the May 2011 episode. What does Taylor like to do in Nashville? “Nashville … you want to go to Hillsboro Village ’cause it’s really cute — this little bohemian shopping district. It’s walking distance from my place. There’s this coffee place, Fido, that I love. There’s a restaurant called City House that’s really cool,” she said. “I love the grocery store. The grocery store’s one of my favorite places.” Where’s the weirdest place she’s ever written a song? “The weirdest place I have ever written a song is probably in an airport, and I got an idea so fast that I just had to run to the bathroom at the airport, grab a paper towel and write lyrics on the paper towel,” she said. “I still have it. I still have it in a box in my room.” What place in time would Taylor most want to travel to if she could? “I would want to see, probably, New York City around the turn of the century,” she said. ” ‘Cause, you know, it looks drastically different now than how it probably looked back then, and I just think that would be really exciting.” So, how much do Sway and Swift like each other? “That was a wonderful, wonderful experience,” she said of meeting Sway for the first time in 2008 for the MTV special “Once Upon a Prom.” From there, the pair relived all their greatest interview moments — including chats on red carpets for shows like the VMAs and the Grammy Awards . The gentlemanly Sway later handed her flowers. And so it seems there’s no lack of love there. Come Monday night, expect Sway and Taylor to make more memories, and you never know what interesting insider tidbits Swift will share. “Safe & Sound” is the lead single off the “Hunger Games” soundtrack and features the Civil Wars. Following Monday’s video premiere — which will also air live on MTV’s channels in Canada, Europe, Latin America, Australia, Asia and Africa — the Grammy-nominated singer will sit down with Sway for a 30-minute interview on MTV.com. Fans of the superstar can get in on the action by submitting questions via Twitter @MTVNews with the hashtags #AskTaylor or #MTVFirst. CMT will air “Safe & Sound” at 8 p.m. ET, the same time the music video will debut exclusively online at MTV.com, CMT.com, VH1.com and MTV’s international sites. On Tuesday morning, VH1’s “Big Morning Buzz Live” will feature the video at 10 a.m. ET/PT. The “Hunger Games” soundtrack, which also features Arcade Fire and the Decemberists, drops March 20. The movie hits theaters on March 23. Don’t miss the premiere of Taylor Swift’s “Safe & Sound” video during “MTV First: Taylor Swift” on Monday at 7:54 p.m. ET on MTV, followed by an exclusive chat with Swift about her “Hunger Games” clip on MTV.com. Whitney Houston’s Death: Prescription Drugs And Alcohol, Report Says

TMZ says Coroner’s officials have told icon’s family she likely died from drugs and alcohol; daughter Bobbi Kristina released from hospital. By Jocelyn Vena Whitney Houston Photo: Epsilon/ Getty Images On Sunday night, the life and impressive career of Whitney Houston was celebrated at the 2012 Grammy Awards , with everyone from Bruno Mars to host LL Cool J and Jennifer Hudson recalling the immense talent of the late icon. Since her passing on Saturday, more reports have surfaced about what might have contributed to her death . After initial speculation that she might have drowned in the bathtub of her Beverly Hills hotel room, a new TMZ report suggests that prescription drugs and alcohol might have played a bigger part in her death than originally believed. Sources tell the site that L.A. County Coroner’s officials have told Houston’s family that despite earlier drowning reports, it’s likely she died of a combination of Xanax, other prescription drugs and alcohol. There wasn’t enough water in her lungs to suggest that drowning played a part, the report says, and she might have died before her head was submerged in water. Her body was reportedly found by her aunt, Mary Jones, who entered the bathroom to check on the singer. Houston’s body will be flown to Atlanta once it is released from the coroner’s office, sources said. Meanwhile, Houston’s daughter, Bobbi Kristina , has been released from Cedars-Sinai Medical Center after being treated for a stressed-induced panic attack shortly after her mother’s death. Since Houston’s passing, Bobbi Kristina’s father, Bobby Brown, has flown to L.A. to be with his daughter, E! News reports. According to a People.com eyewitness, when he landed in L.A., “Bobby had a blank stare and looked exhausted … His friends seemed concerned about him and they surrounded him as they walked through the airport.” He had been on tour with New Edition when he left the trek to join Bobbi Kristina. Sunday’s hospitalization allegedly wasn’t the only health scare for the 18-year-old over Grammy weekend. TMZ reports that she had fallen asleep in the bathtub Friday at the same hotel where her mother was found dead the next day. Bobbi Kristina’s friends reportedly called security to unlock the door and help them remove her from the tub. Share your condolences with Whitney’s family and friends on our Facebook page. Frances Bean Cobain: Courtney Love is an Anorexic, Chain-Smoking, Pill-Popping Pet Killer!

Courtney Love is described as mentally unstable in newly released deposition papers filed by her daughter Frances Bean Cobain, who sought a restraining order in 2009. Frances Bean, now 19, says Love’s behavior even caused her pets’ death. Their cat kicked it after getting entangled in Love’s messy piles of “Etsy fabrics, boxes of paperwork, trash and other possessions,” according to the court papers, while the dog swallowed several of Love’s stash of prescription pills. In order to ensure that no other pets fell victim to Love’s pill-popping habits, Cobain included her dog, Uncle Fester, on the restraining order which was granted. Among those Love was ordered to avoid contact with include Cobain, Uncle Fester, Cobains’ grandmother and her aunt. The primary reason? Love’s drug use. “(She) has taken drugs for as long as I can remember,” Cobain said . “She basically exists now on … Xanax, Adderall, Sonata and Abilify, sugar and cigarettes. She rarely eats … She often falls asleep in bed while smoking.” “I am constantly worried that she will start a fire (which she has done at least three times to date) that will threaten all of our lives.” Cobain initially filed the restraining order and sought to emancipate herself against her mom in December 2009 following a physical fight between the two. Cobain spoke out about another bizarre incident that occurred several years before, when Love took her to visit Love’s former boyfriend, James Barber. “She took me in a taxi to his house in the middle of the night, and from outside the house, in her bare feet, she screamed at him, threw rocks at the house, threatening to burn his [expletive] house down,” Cobain said in the sworn statement. “His children were inside, but that did not stop my mother.” Mother and daughter have had a rocky relationship since the restraining order was granted, but Frances Bean Cobain is trying to move on with her life. She became engaged to Isaiah Silva , the lead singer of The Rambles, in October and the happy pair are looking forward to their upcoming nuptials. “Getting to spend the rest of my life loving my best friend makes me the luckiest woman in the world,” Cobain wrote on her Facebook at the time. My name is Kelsey. I’m 13 and from Pennsylvania. One…

My name is Kelsey. I’m 13 and from Pennsylvania . One day I was sitting at home to hear my mom yelling with excitement , “Come here look what your aunt sent me on Facebook!” I came downstairs to think it was something dumb, to find a picture of Justin Bieber holding the sign my aunt had made for him saying, “Hi Kelsey and Lexi. Can’t wait to see you Friday night at the show!” My sister and I were so excited, we had no idea we were going to his little concert on QVC. 2 days later it was the day we were gonna see Justin Bieber perform. There were no promises that we were gonna meet him, but we were still very excited! My aunt had comeover to pick us up and right away came in with 2 signed posters! He wrote our names on it and signed it!  At his little concert on QVC he performed 5 songs, he was there to promote his album “My World 2.0”. Right after he was done performing, my aunt told us to come with her. We had no idea what was going on so we walked down all these stairs to get to the basement. I opened the door and there was Pattie, his whole band, Scotter, Ryan, and so many more people. Then I saw Justin Bieber. He walked right up to me, gave me a hug and we talked for 5 minutes! He asked if we wanted a picture and of course I said YES. I gave him another hug and left. March 12th 2010, was one of the best days of my life and a day I will never forget because I met my hero. My name is Claire, I’m from Ontario, Canada. I met Justin…

My name is Claire, I’m from Ontario, Canada. I met Justin Bieber on August 7th, 2011 at the Teen Choice Awards in Los Angeles, California. My family and I took a summer vacation to LA to visit my aunt, uncle, and two little cousins. A few days before we were getting ready to go home, my uncle told me that he had gotten free VIP passes to the Teen Choice Awards on the day before we were leaving for my mom, my aunt, and myself. I was so excited! There were tons of people I couldn’t believe I was going to meet. When we finally got to Universal City Walk, where the awards were being held, I headed straight to the red carpet to see if there was anybody there that I recognized. I saw Shay Mitchell, Raven Symone, Joe Jonas, Taylor Lautner, and so many other cool people! I even got a picture with Alfredo Flores! Finally I saw Justin Bieber walking down the carpet, and he was nice enough to talk to every one of his fans. He came to me and my friend and said hi, then I went to hand my friend my camera so he could take a picture of the two of us, when Justin said, “Hold on! I’ll take the picture!” It was so nice of him to offer to do that. I still can’t believe that all of this happened to me, it has inspired me to always follow my dreams! -@clairedy6 Link: My name is Claire, I’m from Ontario, Canada. I met Justin…

‘Breaking Dawn’ ‘Blew My Mind,’ Christina Perri Says

Soundtrack artist reviews November 18 entry in the ‘Twilight’ franchise for MTV News. By Jocelyn Vena Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart in “Breaking Dawn” Photo: Andrew Cooper/ Summit Entertainment One of the perks of being asked to contribute to a soundtrack includes seeing the flick long before anyone else. For self-proclaimed Twilighter Christina Perri, getting a first look at “Breaking Dawn- Part 1” before it opens November 18 was a pretty big deal. “When I screened the movie, it was definitely one of my favorite days ever,” she told MTV News on the set of the video for her “Breaking Dawn” track, “A Thousand Years.” “I went with all these Hollywood people, and they were there for work, and I was there for work to get inspired to write a song, but I was an
