‘It felt like you were live in a crowd,’ she tells MTV News of video’s special effects. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Kelly Marino Avril Lavigne Photo: MTV News Avril Lavigne is back , and she’s asking “What the Hell” on the lead single off her March 8 release, Goodbye Lullaby. In the video , which premiered on Sunday, she’s pursued around town by a guy whose affections she doesn’t seem to value quite as much as her own freedom to do what she pleases. The clip also has another dimension to it: It was shot in 3-D. When MTV News caught up with Lavigne to talk about the song, she was excited about the high-tech project. “The music video’s in 3-D, and my favorite part of the video is the rock-out scene at the end where I jump onstage and I’m with my band,” she said. “When we shot it and I got to watch it back in 3-D with the glasses and actually you can see the crowd’s hands, and it felt like you were live in a crowd, so it was kind of cool.” The song and the album are Lavigne’s return to the music spotlight. In the years since she released The Best Damn Thing in 2007, the 26-year-old had a high-profile divorce from Sum-41’s Deryck Whibley, battled her record label and found love again with former “Hills” star Brody Jenner. The album, she explains, reflects all that growing up. “[It’s] about saying goodbye to something sweet and familiar and taking a step forward and opening a new chapter in your life,” she explained. “This album overall is kind of bittersweet. It’s full of sad and happy emotions. The message overall is about moving forward and coming out of that and finding inner strength. The record’s a little more raw. It’s a more emotional record, and you can really feel that. I went for those raw, vulnerable moments, but having ‘What the Hell’ be the first single is more like my older stuff. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Kelly Marino Avril Lavigne Photo: MTV News Avril Lavigne is as bratty as ever on her new single, the catchy, almost bubbly “What the Hell.” The lead single off Lavigne’s upcoming release, Goodbye Lullaby , due March 8, has not only been burning up the iTunes charts, but it’s also gotten some Twitter love from Kanye West and Kim Kardashian. “I’m just really excited to be back,” the former teen star told MTV News. “It’s been a few years, and I’m excited to see that ‘What the Hell’ [is] doing good so far on iTunes and [with] the fans. The response has been really great, so I’m happy.” The song also just had an impressive debut on the Billboard charts , landing at #6 on the Digital Songs chart, beating Kanye West and Jay-Z’s new song, “H.A.M.” This Sunday, fans will finally get the chance to see the clip for the video when it debuts on ABC Family. “The music video for ‘What the Hell’: It’s kind of a guy chasing me around, and I hop into a random cab, and he’s chasing me,” Lavigne explained. “And I go through a clothing store and he chases me, but at the end of the video, it’s really just me having a bunch of fun with him, and he’s my boyfriend, so I like him in the end.” The video is special because it was shot in 3-D. “The music video’s in 3-D, and my favorite part of the video is the rock-out scene at the end where I jump onstage and I’m with my band,” she said. “When we shot it and I got to watch it back in 3-D with the glasses and actually you can see the crowd’s hands and it felt like you were live in a crowd, so it was kind of cool.” Are you a fan of “What the Hell”? I don’t know what point try-hard becomes authentic because I figured if you do it long enough, you know the teenage angst thing, with the pink streak in your hair and the fuck tattoo under your tit long enough, you eventually become that person you’ve always wanted to be, cuz no one rememebers the socially awkward white Canadian trash singing Shania Twain songs to launch a career, but I do know that Avril Lavigne’s still not quite there, and maybe that’s only because I don’t find the whole 15 and angry, fighting with her parents, emo punk scene kid shit hot, especially not on a 30 year old, Don’t get me wrong, I’m more into my 30 year olds having the mental capacity of 15 year olds, just not down with their fashion sense, except when it is slutty and pantyless, which does happen…. Either way, OMG! As we reported earlier, Dr. Conrad Murray is likely to argue at trial on involuntary manslaughter charges that Michael Jackson killed himself . Now, in addition to MJ accidentally delivering his own coup de grace in the form of a lethal Propofol dose, comes a second component to the theory. Jackson’s weakened state during various tours throughout life – including the 2009 London concerts that never took place – will be a focal point. THIS WAS IT : Jackson never made it on tour in 2009 . There’s “compelling evidence” MJ was in poor health whenever he went on tour, sources say, dating back to his Bad and Dangerous albums decades ago. Jackson was frequently “dehydrated, medicated, and sleep-deprived” and like with Dr. Conrad Murray , had a doctor who accompanied him on the road. The gist is that grueling concert schedules took a huge toll, leaving him prone to and demanding drugs to sleep, long before Murray was in the picture. The “This Is It” London tour was especially grueling, because AEG added dozens of concert dates for Michael, who was weaker than ever by last year. Not only that, the perfectionist was terrified he would fail to live up to expectations and pushed himself even harder to overcompensate for that fear. This dovetails into the defense theory that MJ was over-medicated and reduced to a shell of his former self after years spent under enormous pressure. By the time last spring rolled around, he couldn’t sleep he relied on Propofol to do the trick, and became increasingly frustrated when it did not work. The defense believes that when Dr. Murray walked out of the room June 25 and Jackson woke up, he accidentally infused himself with the fatal dose. What do you think? Is there any chance that’s true? And you know what that means: New Year’s resolutions. The most popular vows generally revolve around health (weight loss, exercise, quitting smoking) and finance (spend less). However when MTV News caught up with a few of our favorite stars recently to find out what they resolve to do in 2011, their commitments were a bit more unique. “My New Year’s resolution is to stay true to myself,” “Bottoms Up” singer Trey Songz revealed. “Regardless of what anybody says, I’ll never let anybody else’s thoughts dictate that of my own.” “Probably just progress more as an actor,” said 12-year-old “Modern Family” scene-stealer Rico Rodriguez. Avril Lavigne had three broad goals in mind: “Be healthy, focus hard, make sure to see [my] family.” MTV’s own “Jersey Shore” standout Mike “The Situation” Sorrentino said his plans involve moving from the small screen to the big one. “[I might be] doing maybe a movie or something,” he teased. Chart-topping pink princess Nicki Minaj offered the most colorful response: “[I’ll be] touring around the world. It’s looking like the biggest, baddest, I don’t know … I should’ve had something better to say,” she began, and then invented a few words on the spot, for emphasis on just how big 2011 will be for the “Your Love” singer. “[I’m going to be the] biggest, baddest, boldest, booming-est, fearless-ocity-est, Pink Friday -est, girl,” she promised. Not only will the pop-punk princess debut her brand-new single, “What the Hell,” on “Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve With Ryan Seacrest 2011,” but she’s also treating fans to a free download of the tune on New Year’s Day. In order to get the freebie, fans will need to head to the Avril’s official Facebook page and “like” the starlet on January 1. As of now, the singer/songwriter has uploaded a 21-second video titled “Knock! Knock!” to the social media site to tease the premiere. The clip begins with the song’s flashing title before a cameraman walks up to Lavigne’s trailer and knocks on the door. The clip ends with the 26-year-old starlet opening the door and proclaiming, “What the hell?” Earlier this month, the Canadian songstress described the lead single off Goodbye Lullaby, which hits stores March 8, as “an unabashed embrace of fun and freedom.” However, Lavigne has stressed in numerous interviews that the rest of the LP will have a raw essence to it. Among other tunes featured on the new album are “Smile,” which she described on her website as a rocker in which she “expresses her gratitude for special people in her life,” the ballad “Wish You Were Here” and the song she told Entertainment Weekly was the album’s most personal track, “Goodbye.” During the making of Goodbye Lullaby, the singer worked with producer/songwriter Butch Walker, pop innovator Max Martin, her former guitarist Evan Taubenfeld and even ex-husband, Sum 41’s Deryck Whibley. Brown/ Getty Images During “Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve” special, Avril Lavigne will unveil her brand-new single “What the Hell.” However, before she debuts any new music, fans can listen to the Canadian singer’s signature yodel from her 2002 hit “I’m With You” on Rihanna’s new drinking anthem, “Cheers (Drink to That).” In a Q&A session with Entertainment Weekly, Lavigne spoke about the celebratory party track, admitting that that the Barbadian songstress has some great vocal chops. “It was really exciting because ‘I’m With You’ is one of my favorite songs that I’ve done, I always love performing it,” the punky popster admitted. “And I think Rihanna’s awesome, she has great songs, she’s a really great singer, so yeah I was excited. I think it’s really cool.” When MTV News spoke to Rihanna about “Cheers (Drink to That)” in November, the red-headed star told us that the cut is one of her favorites off her latest release, Loud . “I love that song,” she gushed. “That is one of my favorite songs on the album. It makes you feel like celebrating.
