Paul Hogan Settles Tax Snafu; Comeback Next?

Get excited: “After eight years, the Australian actor Paul Hogan, best known for his Crocodile Dundee movies, has resolved his dispute with the authorities there, who said he and his former manager, John Cornell, owed $156 million in unpaid taxes and penalties dating to the 1980s heyday of the film series. As the settlement was announced Mr. Hogan’s lawyer, Andrew Robinson, criticized the tax inquiry as a waste of taxpayers’ money, saying it may have cost more than $20 million. He also suggested that Mr. Hogan, who has largely been inactive in recent years, might soon be back with a new project. ‘Who knows, now that this monkey is off his back?’ Mr. Robinson said.” [ NYT ]

Cannes Adds 7 to 2012 Lineup

The upcoming Cannes Film Festival added additional titles to its Official Selection Monday, including American title Gimme The Loot which screened last week at the San Francisco International Film Festival. Today’s additions join the 22 other films in the official selection and 16 in the event’s Un Certain Regard section as well as the previously announced Critics Week lineup . Additionally, the fest said the montage film Final Cut – Hölgyeim És Uraim by György Pálfi (Hungary), produced by Béla Tarr, which will close Cannes Classics on Saturday, May 25. I know what you were thinking: “Whew! The Oscars are over! No more of this Uggie red-carpet business ! We can back to real celebrities and real celebrity issues — like what Jimmy Kimmel thinks about Kim Kardashian . Hard-hitting!” Alas, guess who went to the White House Correspondents’ Dinner over the weekend? Moreover, guess who just got a freaking book deal ? First off, there’s the Artist wonder dog hamming it up on the WHCD red carpet, presumably awaiting a glass of pinot grigio and maybe a crab cake or just holding poor Diane Sawyer up on her way to the metal detector. In honor of the weekend (and bodybuilding and social media and Twins and Terminator and Kindergarten Cop , which ruled) let’s take a look at the best pins former California governor/Cyberdyne Systems Model 101 Arnold Schwarzenegger has made after a few weeks on Pinterest . Giant naan-eating Governator in 3, 2, 1… Schwarzenegger, along with more and more Hollywood types ( real and fictitious ), joined the new photo-pinning app thingy recently in a clever stroke of marketing genius. Looking for help picking the perfect back-cover photo for his upcoming memoir, Total Recall: My Unbelievably True Life Story , Schwarzenegger put out a call to fans; Tweet or Pinterest or Facebook Arnie a photo of — who else? — Arnie from any moment in his bizarrely varied professional career and if he uses your selection, he’ll give you a finder’s fee publishing credit free training session shout-out! But while crowd-sourcing for his own book seems to have been the original impetus for Schwarzenegger’s foray into the brave new world of Pinterest, it’s yielded a cache of kinda-great vintage photos of Arnold in action over the years. War Witch and Una Noche Take Top Tribeca Film Festival Prizes

Kim Nguyen’s War Witch cast a spell at the Tribeca Film Festival Thursday evening, winning the event’s $25K Founders Award for Best Narrative Feature, while Una Noche ‘s Lucy Mulloy won $50K and the fest’s Best New Narrative Director prize at a ceremony in Lower Manhattan. Also taking home prizes at the ceremony were The World Before Her by Canadian Nisha Pahuja, which took Best Documentary Feature while Dutch director Jeroen van Velzen’ won Best New Documentary Director for Wavumba . “It’s been so gratifying to see the audiences react so positively to the films, and our juries have been equally passionate. I celebrate these immensely talented filmmakers,” commented Nancy Schafer, TFF Executive Director in a statement. “We salute the courage of the jury to award films that not only tell stories about real issues in the world, but are beautifully constructed and crafted,” said Frederic Boyer, TFF Artistic Director. “The amazing first-time performances by young actors are a tribute to the creativity of the films and filmmakers.”   Screenings of all winning films will take place throughout the final day of the festival, Sunday, April 29.
