Chris Matthews and Howard Fineman Have Mutual Obamagasm on Hardball

Chris Matthews and Howard Fineman on Friday had a mutual Obamagasm while cameras rolled on MSNBC’s “Hardball.” As the adorable couple chatted about the Koran burning scandal, and of course blamed the entire controversy on Republicans such as House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Oh.), former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, and former Alaska governor Sarah Palin, the Newsweek columnist unashamedly started the love-fest. “Well, sitting there in the press conference today with President Obama, you could almost hear sort of the classical music in the background,” cooed Fineman. “It was a stately thing, and a mature discussion.” “I get you,” echoed Matthews. “This is an Oxford don, he’s so well-turned, he comes in there elegantly, presenting himself elegantly, presenting himself on a very high-level tone.” One imagines both of these so-called journalists needed a cigarette and a shower during the break (video follows with transcript and commentary): HOWARD FINEMAN, NEWSWEEK: Well, sitting there in the press conference today with President Obama, you could almost hear sort of the classical music in the background. You know, I don’t mean to be facetious… CHRIS MATTHEWS, HOST: No, I get you… FINEMAN: But, you know what I mean. It was a stately thing, and a mature discussion, you could agree or disagree, let’s all be reasonable about this… MATTHEWS: This is an Oxford don, he’s so well turned… FINEMAN: Yeah! MATTHEWS: …he comes in there elegantly, presenting himself elegantly, presenting himself on a very high-level tone… FINEMAN: And he gave a very… MATTHEWS: …against this menagerie… FINEMAN: Yeah! MATTHEWS: …that’s biting at his heals. FINEMAN: That’s why I’m saying, those people that you cited, Boehner and Gingrich and Palin, are not playing the same ballgame that Barack Obama is. MATTHEWS: I shouldn’t them the Three Stooges, they’re a lot smarter than that. I think they know it. They’re not stooges. FINEMAN: Sure they know what they’re doing. MATTHEWS: Stooges are the people that buy their act. Honestly, do you think anyone  at MSNBC is the slightest bit embarrassed to see male journalists gushing and fawning over the president this way? Or do the folks running this pathetic “news” outlet share such sentiments and therefore think men behaving like teenage girls is appropriate?

The Chill Wave Movement

This Summer I was riding the Chill Wave, one of the most important genres of music of the modern world. This music is refreshing and awesome. Some might say it's like you're on drugs, but you really don't need drugs to enjoy this. For sure it will make you feel good. Pure Ecstasy. . . ……………………………………………………. “It generally has an ‘80s influence, which is definitely pretty heavy in my stuff,” said Ernest Greene, a.k.a. Washed Out, one of the acts being touted as part of the trend. New Wave-sounding samples and ambient music is often interlaced with dance-y beats, and the approach to recording is decidedly lo-fi. Carles explained the genre this way in a post last summer: Chillwave, he wrote, “sounds like something playing in the background of an old VHS cassette that you found in your attic from the late ’80s/’90s.” Chillwave isn’t limited to a geographic region, but the South and East Coast figure prominently. Bundick is from South Carolina while Greene is from Georgia. Other so-called chillwave bands, like Small Black and Neon Indian, are New York-based, while Memory Tapes, a.k.a. Dayve Hawk, hails from New Jersey. That’s where the parallels end. Whereas musical movements were once determined by a city or venue where the bands congregated, “now it’s just a blogger or some journalist that can find three or four random bands around the country and tie together a few commonalities between them and call it a genre,” said Alan Palomo of Neon Indian. ……………………………….. Halperin Not Digging Dippy Deutsch?

Was Mark Halperin just mugging, or was he really turned off by Donny Deutsch’s antics on the set of Morning Joe today? Check the video and be the judge. Here’s the background: on the show’s August 6th edition [a clip of which was played today and is seen in the video here], Deutsch turned up in a tight black T-shirt and proceeded to spend much of his appearance flexing for the cameras.  He ended his self-promoting performance by doing a set of push-ups as the closing comments rolled. Deutsch, apparently doing sartorial penance, appeared in a three-piece suit this morning.  But when Mika Brzezinski chided him for his macho act, going so far as to facetiously accuse him of “sexting” on the set, Deutsch couldn’t resist recreating his previous performance, doing a set of dips on the desk. Keep an eye on Mark Halperin, who reacts with a series of head shakes, eye rolls, nose pinches and snippy sidewise glances.  Mark might have just been mugging, but was there also been an element of sincere disapproval of Deutsch’s egotistical display?  I’m saying ‘si’.

30 Seconds To Mars Save Souls In ‘Closer To The Edge’ Video

‘Yes, this is a cult,’ says video that aims to capture fans’ perspective of the live 30STM experience. By James Montgomery 30 Seconds to Mars’ “Closer to the Edge” Photo: EMI With their brand new “Closer to the Edge” video — which premiered on Monday (August 16) — 30 Seconds to Mars have joined a special fraternity. For about as long as there have been rock videos, there have also been “road videos,” grand testaments to the highs and lows, the triumphs and tragedies, the sheer excitement and terrifying monotony that comes with being a touring rock-and-roll band. Documenting your life on the bus is as much a rite of passage as getting your first platinum plaque (or bedding your first groupie), and as such, basically every rock act worth their salt has, at some point, released a road video … and then released it again on the “Live” DVD. Though, in keeping with pretty much everything they do, 30STM have taken the concept to dizzying, unabashedly all-encompassing heights. Though road videos feature plenty of live footage (as does “Edge”), they are rarely — if ever — about the live experience. Rather, they are about the band themselves, the three or four dudes who sleep on bunks, sign autographs, eat at all-night diners and gaze longingly out the window of their bus. The fans are just part of the background … the occasional slow-motion shot or the supportive arms that keep the lead singer aloft when he crowd surfs. “Closer to the Edge” is different because it is darn-near 100 percent about the fans themselves: their lives and loves and fears, and how all of those things motivated them to attend a 30STM show in the first place. They are the stars, they are the main attraction. The members of the band are basically secondary characters in the thing. Even Jared Leto’s foot-high pink Mohawk. The video — directed by Leto, under the nom-de-film Bartholomew Cubbins — opens with testimonials from sad-eyed 30STM fans, espousing their views on life (“My philosophy is: Don’t regret anything you do … because in the end, it makes you who you are”). Each of them is alone in their own particular way, it would seem, though, through the music of 30 Seconds to Mars, they find a space in which they can coexist with others just like them. They may be outcasts in their high schools or towns, but at a 30STM show, they are anything but. They are, as a title card in the video puts it, part of “The Family.” And that message of inclusion is driven home in a series of stats the video throws at us (“27 Countries. 89 Cities. 1 Band. And All 1,363,930 of You”) and the message, “Yes, This Is a Cult.” Provided you are not curdled with cynicism, it’s a rather amazing idea. 30 Seconds to Mars are less of a touring rock band than they are a barnstorming ministry. They aim to uplift, to inspire, to save, and “Closer to the Edge” is their document of that mission. Sure, there are moments that sort of make you snicker — the sheer bombast of the entire thing, the fact that this is a “film … presented by 30 Seconds to Mars,” the image of Leto’s pink Mohawk peering contemplatively over the Grand Canyon — but there’s no denying the power of seeing tens of thousands of fans finding a simultaneous salvation, of a crowd of individuals becoming one. It’s what rock and roll is supposed to be about, really: inclusion. What do you think of the new 30 Seconds to Mars video? Share your own reviews in the comments below. Trey Songz Honors Prince At BET Awards With ‘Purple Rain’ Verse

Singer kicks off performance with latest single, ‘Yo Side of the Bed.’ By Hillary Crosley Photo: Frederick M. Brown/ Getty Images Trey Songz kicked off Prince’s Lifetime Achievement Award tribute at the BET Awards on Sunday (June 27) with his performance of “Yo Side of the Bed” that bled into “Purple Rain.” In a purple button-up, black slacks and vest, Trey sang his recent hit “Yo Side of the Bed” atop a stage bathed in purple lights. The track’s video, featuring Keri Hilson as a military officer and Trey as her mourning husband after she’s killed in the line of duty, played in the background on large screens. During the performance, Trey gave a shout-out to all who’ve lost a special someone. “This song goes out to anybody watching this tonight,” Trey said to an audience of swaying women. “I feel your pain.” The singer then launched into the first verse of Prince’s 1984 classic “Purple Rain” from the film of the same name. As Trey strained to hit falsetto notes almost on his knees, the camera cut to Prince himself seated in the audience looking on. “Prince, I don’t know where you are, but you inspire us all,” Trey said as a screen showed the message “Pray for our soldiers and their families” behind him. Earlier in the evening, the Virginia native won the award for Best Male R&B Artist and brought his date, his mother, April Tucker, onstage with him to accept his trophy. Tucker is extremely proud of her eldest son and described him as “a regular guy with a God-given voice and talent for writing.” Following the awards show, BET will debut Trey’s documentary “My Moment,” which follows the singer during Jay-Z’s recent Blueprint 3 Tour. What did you think of Trey’s performance at the BET Awards? Let us know in the comments! Sophie Turner’s Amazing Nobody Cleavage

Some of you may be wondering why I keep posting pictures of this hot piece Sophie Turner , I ask myself the same thing, but then I look at her breasts for ten or fifteen minutes and I forget what the question was. Anyhow, I’m sure she’s going to become big one day and I look forward to her long career playing such memorable characters as trashy waitress #4 and hot blonde in the background who gave the producer a hummer.

Vuvuzelas Can Be Eco-Friendly As Well As Noisy

Image from Vuvuzela Orchestra Vuvuzela: a word (and sound) that has gone from being local to global in 24 hours. It’s the plastic horn that produces the droning, buzzing sound in the background of the World Cup football matches. And you either love them, if you are South African, or hate them if you are the rest of the world. There have been pleas to ban them but World Cup organisers are asking fans to “please embrace our culture and the way we celebrate.” There are fears that they will become a staple of British games now as fans stuff them into their suitcases. But what to do with them … Read the full story on TreeHugger
